wow, been in the forums for just one day and I'm already tired of the CS trolls... is there anything of real substance that we can discuss?
Not until ArenaNet gives us something of substance. Until then, be prepared for every thread to turn into a Cash Shop thread.
Wish the trolls would go back to playing WOW/TOR and leave us who are interested in discussions of substance alone. From what I gather, in regards to the CS, many opinions, very little fact. There is so much more to GW2, surely there are more interesting things to discuss
We are 8 pages into a definition of hype thread, and people want a discussion of substance?
Well that was a waste of two minutes of my life reading that pseudo-intellectual rubbish. What a pointless post.

pseudo-intellectual, Awesome! So, you're saying I'm getting there, right? In another post you call me "Mr. Verbose", after having quoted my entire post. Nice form.

Can we please go back to the discussion about the cash shop and how I'm going to use it to purchase a whole bunch of unfair advantages and P2W the whole game a day or two after launch?
I think the hype many refer to as possibly problematic would be the hype generated by a belief in the exaggeration that marketing creates, which it is their job to create this. It's one thing to see things of substance and get hyped about it. It's another to take every word spoken as an undeniable gospel.

hence why no one could make a legit claim I am hyping this game. Because I wont even bother to watch any advertisments of a game, and my initial exposure to the game was actual gameplay footage. At this point, all Anet has done was put their product out on display, the level of excitment among those who liked what they saw, is what others are reacting to. Then they get all angry when nothing they say will dent that excitement. It's an old case of, are you going to believe me(the naysayer) or your lying eyes.
I see the game's flaws, but I am still seeing the complaining for what it really is, contempt prior to investigation.

I know what you mean, that was basically my experience with TOR and many others, once I got into CB I knew the deal, I couldn't talk about it; at least I knew where the game was both good and bad. That's what it takes for me to get hyped {or the opposite} about something. I usually ignore most of the hype generators until that point.

Hype = Fan unlreastic expectations (even with proof), CGI trailers, Dev teams promising things (not showing), Trailers and all those "hyped" up weekly video/diaries MMOs seem to do.
What I've personally seen with Guild Wars 2 is a lot of footage with high praise and critisicm/worries at the same time. I've said before though that though the negatives coming toward Guild Wars 2 though are things that can likely be tweaked easier than say if the game was linear or if the game was just boring.
I've heard the game still needs some good optimization, dynamic questing can be tweaked a little, some animations. Of course the cash shop, but most know it's not a big deal.
I was excited about TOR, but once I heard it was so linear, world felt empty/static, PvP was dogshit. I lost interest quickly. Even started to lose my interest in TSW lately with some of the PvP changed they made and lack of info/footage to be honest. I mean real info and some actual PvP footage for a change....
Having read through and participated in numerous posts regarding the RMT/cash shop in GW2, I've seen several instances of people who are obviously caught up in the hype surrounding the game, outright bash and insult posters who have reservations about how the cash shop will turn out. Discussions of "I hope they don't add that to the cash shop," and "I feel that being in the cash shop will be P2W," are often met with 'fanboys' wasting no time in calling the OP an idiot for feeling the way they do, because 'ANet would never do anything bad'.
Really? Cash shop? There's just no getting away from it is there? It's like, I could start a thread, "Did Mary really have a little lamb", and BAM, "yeah, she got it from the cash shop".
I have never seen a more true enactment of a post...lol. Ceridith uses the cash shop as an example of a legitimate concern that can be brought up for discussion and BAM - here comes the belittlement of his entire argument on the basis that this is always brought up. Making someones concerns seem unimportant is an insult. You just proved something here. Nice.
I could just as easily say that he used his CS take, to derail a thread that has nothing to do with CS. As I said before, there are any number of threads dedicated to the CS Monster. What is clear in these forums is that those of us who are fans, have little chance of discussing nearly anything about GW2 without someone derailing the thread, without people like you insisting we must also include crap we're not talking about. Wanna talk about the Guardian, fine, but don't leave out CS. Wanna talk PVP, fine, but don't leave out CS. Wanna talk about lore, fine, but don't leave out our concern du jour! It's frickin' irritating. And the more we get irritated, the more likely someone stepping on our conversation is to get a nice, "SCREW YOU, go away". And then here comes someone like you, "Oh look, see, these guys are mean fanboys, that are blinded by the bullshit, and are stupid and dumb derrrrrr". The gaming world, and GW2 in particular, don't revolve around you and or your concerns. GW2 is what it is, if you don't like it, please by all means don't buy it, don't play it, but most of all, DON'T TALK TO ME ABOUT IT! I don't give a rats ass!
It appeared he was just using the CS ideal as an example of another issue which, in discussion causes a "fan" to loose control and react in a negative manner. Case in point.
This does directly reach into the "hype" discussion as it is this "hype" or excitement (if you will) that causes said "fans" to react so negatively. Thank you yet again for proving my point.
Heartless, please tell me you're gonna play in wvw, cause I'm really looking forward to killing you! ha!
After I buy all of the p2w unfair advantages from the cash shop, I'm going to solo WvW.
This is not, nor can it be so. You will marvel at my Ringmasters Top Hat of Whoop-ass (that I aquire from the p2w, er, I mean CS) You will tremble in fear, then bow down to it's mighty, Ringmasteryness. Then, your ass will be utterly whooped. You will limp away, rubbing said ass as you go, wondering, why did I ever buy a game, where you could spend real money on a Ringmasters Top Hat of Whoop-Ass.

1.to stimulate, excite, or agitate (usually followed by up ): She was hyped up at the thought of owning her own car.
2.to create interest in by flamboyant or dramatic methods; promote or publicize showily: a promoter who knows how to hype a prizefight.
3.to intensify (advertising, promotion, or publicity) by ingenious or questionable claims, methods, etc. (usually followed by up ).
4.to trick; gull.
noun
5.exaggerated publicity; hoopla.
6.an ingenious or questionable claim, method, etc., used in advertising, promotion, or publicity to intensify the effect.
7.a swindle, deception, or trick.
All over this board, there is a constant trolling, er, I mean theme, in many posts regarding the "hype" surrounding GW2. Those definitions in red can't be known until after launch. So, lets stick to the first definition, for now. "Overhyped", is not a word, and "over hyped" is unecessary, "hype" does a fine job of explaining what we're talking about by itself.
So, who's responsible for this seemingly unfortunate and ubiquitous evil, "hype"? The first suspect of course is Anet. What have they done, to create this beastie called hype? They've explained there design philosophy. They've shown screenshots, and videos of gameplay. They've done multiple interviews in regards to game mechanics. They've sat on panels to answer questions regarding nearly everything about the game. Is this not expected behaviour from a gaming company with a product in development? As I said, only after launch can we know whether they've exxagerated, or attempted to deceive or swindle.
So, have they succeeded in hyping the game? I think they have. But, isn't it a natural consequence of the overall previews they've given into the product they're developing? I think it is, and I think it's not some kind of evil boogeyman many here try to portray it as. I think for some, no matter the level of information, they would complain. If they didn't get enough information, we would hear, "it's vaporware, it's never coming out", or, "what are they hiding, it must be fail". Too much information, or, even information that shows it's going to be a quality product, and you get, "it's way overhyped", and "remember Lord of Conans Heroes, it was hyped like this too, fail".
The next suspect is the gaming press. Have they hyped the game? Certainly they have. What are they suppose to do? Well, they're suppose to look into the game, and report what they see. Apparently, they like what they see. For some, that's a bad thing, because, it helps to further empower the "hype monster". I really don't know how you get around it. If the product is good, then the press should say so, and they have. Is it a conspiracy, the gaming press knows it really sucks, but, because NCSoft is such a behemouth in the gaming world, the press feel they need to kiss ass? I don't think so. We're not talking about EA here folks. (thank god)
And finally the fans. Ah yes, fanbois aplenty. Especially those of us with years of expeience with GW. We know how Anet operates, we've seen all the interviews, the panels, read the press, seen the videos, some have even participated in beta, and are naturally excited by way of the evidence so far provided. Have we all been brain-jacked, and get some kind of direct marching instructions from Anet? No, we just like what we've seen to this point, simple as that. Are we all sure it's going to be perfect? Absolutely not. Do we have concerns, misgivings, and otherwise not sure that we agree with all of the design philosophies that have gone into the game? Sure we do, and if we didn't have to run around the board putting out the grassfires of misinformation that some here start, intentionally or unintentionally, you might have a completely different opinion of the GW2 community. Why? Because you would see more critical posts from us regarding our concerns. Unfortunately, I think we too often take the bate, and spend our time debating nonsense, instead of really delving into what we believe may be the games shortcomings.
Hype, as defined here, is natural, intended, and necessary. Marketing is hype. Why would you create a product, and then not market it? So from now on, when you decide to start another thread regarding hype, please state your intention. Other than questions regarding the marketing of GW2, you can't really post anything regarding hype, until after launch, because we simply do not, and can not, know.
I tried to pick my favorite part... so I could shorten this quote >.< but I couldn't. Get out of my head now, shoo, you have made my.. err your point. For the definitions however I think we can know 2 BUT I don't think its applies to this case as I cannot recall any flamboyant or dramatic advertising campains for GW2.

Of course not. Face it, CS is the feature that has more potential to break GW2 than any concept/design/development mistake ANet could possibly make. And the fact that we have virtually no information about CS (except some cryptic and fairly contradictory statements) only adds to uncertainty and frustration.
And that's where both topics (CS and hype) get tightly intertwined. You can't hype GW2 w/o believing that the CS will be reasonable and everything you can buy there will be purely cosmetic/optional. As much as I'd like to believe this, I can't forget that all financial decisions will be made by NCSoft and that corporations can never be trusted. And ANet's refusal to discuss the CS openly only fuels my doubts.

As much as I want to play GW2, this is a valid point. No matter what all the videos and beta tests come up with and all the analysis and all the reviews and all the polish this game has, This ONE thing can shatter it all in a heartbeat.
Rememebr Allods? All through Beta, it was going to revolutionize F2P. Then the Final CS reveal.
