My gripe is about people calling GW2 true action combat and comparing it to Tera's combat. I have no problems with GW2's combat engine but the fact that a player can move and attack at the same means jack when they are targeted. The only players that I want running back to Tera are the people that actually want a combat engine where they can actively move out of the way/block of a person's attack. GW2 doesn't even the option of intercepting/blocking an attack aimed at an ally player.
A lot of people are backing off from the "GW2 is true action combat" statment, so now it's fine.
I was never given a chance to respond, one day I had an account and the next it's gone.
What good is Tera's combat system of "point and shootin" if you can't move while shooting/casting? Its not true action combat if you are running, having to stop, stand still, aim and shoot, then start running again, oh wait, got to stop, stand still again before I can aim and shoot again.
Because you don't like it doesn't mean your opinion is a fact. No matter which way you try and break it down it's still an action combat game.
In this article we want to introduce you to the combat system of TERA. TERA Action Combat System emphasizes three things: timing, distance and accuracy. Since TERA is a true action combat system, it is important to meet all three criteria. This means that the personal skill of the player will be of great importance.
The reason people like TERA's combat idea better than if it didn't have pauses is that it would become a point and spam game. The tab/dodge hybrid is better than just tab but it's not better than TERA IMO.
1) You're comparing two different things and not taking into consideration the market at the time. I did say that WoW was the exeption to the rule on getting your monies worth as a total income by the developer. Granted, Blizzard charges the same price as the others, they just happened to get x millions more people to sub every month. Good for them. People still pay the fee because 15.00 is worth it compared to any other form of paid entertainment.
2) GW1 succeeded back in '04. If made right now it would be f2p, not b2p, right out of the gate due to the features it lacks and the f2p competition it would have. It was a good call by NC to do it because the market was booming with new players and the price structure was brand new for MMOs. Not so now, we have more titles than players by comparison.
3) You skipped ahead at the very beginning. As I said previosulsy it's not just about sustaining but about getting it made in the first place. Without a known IP to get the initial sales or a major company taking the risk b2p simply fails to provide a good AAA as a sub would.
4) Keep yours eyes on EQNext though, it will probably be b2p with a CS/sub model like EQ2. It's not out yet though so I play TERA
1) You're right, there are very few mmorpgs worth their money (past & present).
2) Agreed, GW1 would not be able to compete in the AAA cateogry today. Wow, Lineage II, CoH, and EQ2 (among others) were released in the same year as GW1, all with monthly subs; however GW1 was released with no monthly subs. GW1's b2p model was more Anet than NCsoft; CoH was published by NCsoft and had monthly subs. Unlike its competitors at the time, Anet's GW1 was "counter AAA mmo culture" due to its b2p (no monthly subs) model. Anet is looking to continue to do the same today with GW2.
3) I disagree, GW1 provided a great AAA game back in 2004 (it appears GW2 will do the same in 2012)
4) I'll keep my eyes open, but I think my next game is going to be GW2

I think you need to either play the game or do a bit more research before you make statements like this.
I'll give you some examples from different classes and the skills that they can employ that allow for evading or otherwise "intercepting/blocking an attack":
Draw a line in front of you that foes cannot cross.
So clearly your statement is incorrect. In fact, playing well involves you watching the animations of the mob you're fighting for tells, and then interrupting them or dodging from them to mitigate damage. This sounds pretty action-oriented to me, but GW2 is not calling itself "true action combat" even though one COULD interpret the above as such.
Additionally you have:
Dodging is an evasion technique used to avoid incoming attacks by dashing out of the way.
If you want to this idea of thoughtful, strategic gameplay in action with a good player, spend at least 10 minutes watching the following:
After reviewing the above, do you stand by your statement? If you wish to critique GW2 (or any game for that matter) at least use the correct information.

well, then I must say its "action combat system" is lacking some of the most basic elements, being able to move and doge while shooting/casting. Look up any FPS (true action combat) and see if you can shoot and move at the same time?
No. The game is far too high quality to be dead shortly after release in any part of the world. Yes, it's mediocre in terms of gameplay, but that gameplay hasn't stopped games like Perfect World or Runes of Magic from doing very well. I will not be one of those people out there playing TERA, but I'd still take it over other games like it.
I do however, think it will be F2P pretty quickly. It will have to be if it wants to compete with F2P Aion in the long-term, let alone make a profit over other games coming later this year.
The reason people like TERA's combat idea better than if it didn't have pauses is that it would become a point and spam game. The tab/dodge hybrid is better than just tab but it's not better than TERA IMO.
As to which one is better, I guess profit, sales, and subs (active playerbase) will define which one is more popular. We can only presuppose that the more popular combat system would be the one mostly prefered by players. In the case of Tera we'll have to count their subs, in the case of GW2, we'll have to count their active playerbase. Oh yeah, that's right, you don't have to pay 15 bucks a month to play GW2, nice deal! :-p

Agreed and agreed.
Tera is a better game than Aion and it will most likely end up F2P in 6 to 12 months.
Personally i've said it before. If they want to follow down the fail questing path like they are doing now with no REAL choices other then to grind, they won't do well in the west. We westerners do not like grinding, and quest grinding most recently has been the boon of many a themepark.

That is one of the greatest weaknesses that Tera brings to the mmo gaming table. With so much supposed inovation with their combat system, surely they could have attempted at the dynamic event system. By reverting back to the linear quest system, I believe Tera has not only limited its possibility for success but sealed its eventual transition to F2P (6-12 months).

No, there's a difference between actual dodging/blocking and using a defensive cooldown. WoW and Rift have a ton of cooldown abilities to mitigate/negate damage that does not make them actoun combat. The difference between a defensive cooldown is that it's an ability that you use to mitigate damage that would otherwise would have been unavoidable. A dodge means that an attack missed you because you literally moved out of the way. A actual block is when you absorb damage from the front, you are not invincible.
You can tell these moves are defensive cooldowns because of the massively large recharge timers.
1) You misunderstood and mocked what I said. 15.00 is a more affordable form of paid entertainment than anything else out there. I have at the most 4 hours a night to play. 4x30=120/15= 13 cents an hour... Problem is attention spans have people hopping from one title to another. I want a game I can park in at least a year.
2,3,4) GW1 had great graphics, story and was simple. B2p is how it was able to compete with other p2p games. It was and is not a quality AAA MMO by my standards and if GW2 is brining the same effort of game this time I'm glad I'm waiting a while to even consider it.

Dodging temporarily consumes endurance. You can dodge 3-4 times when endurance is at its maximum of 100 points. A player can dodge in any direction by rapidly tapping the corresponding movement key, or by pressing a movement key and the dodge key simultaneously. If you are not moving, you will dodge backwards. [1]
Some skills and traits also allow dodging while using a skill.

The hilarious thing is that you don't see that the dynamic events are just quests packaged better.
Agreed! dynamic events are better than quests. What's dissapointing is that the Tera dev team doesn't agree.
I think better is not the right word, instead try to use "different". In the end the feel will be the same has quests a la WoW or TERA. And before you ask, yes i've played the game. That was the feeling i got from it, others might have a different opinion.
Agreed, DE is a great way to roll with quests if they are quests and not tasks. They are boring no matter if they are triggered or not.
The great thing about TERA is that although it has quest hubs for those that want them you don't have to do them. I'm 13 and I've done 2 yellow quests. Every mob I fight is even level or 2 above and I am having a blast. I'm not even out of the linear portions yet. People are so used to being forced into the questing system they don't accept when you don't have to.

Yes GW2 has a dodge, but it doesn't matter because the combat is tab target based. Ranged attacks home in on the targetted player making actual dodging pointless. Dodging in GW2 works more like a defensive cooldown then a real dodge.

I have provided ample evidence, based on fact and not opinion, that through a use of skills and dodge mechanics, one can in fact "move out of the way/block" a person's attack.
In Tera, at level 16, the one thing my sorcerer could do was jump back when the cooldown was done.
I don't see the difference. Do you think that people moving a targeting circle to follow my jumping back is somehow more complex that the dynamics in GW2?

Guys regarding all this dodge discussion, can we just postpone it to after the BWE?
Some of us never playerd the game and from what I read you both could be right.
What i mean is that you may be able to dodge an incoming attack by moving out of the way or you may be able to dodge it since the skill itself put an invulnerability on you while dodging, anyway without testing the game we can't know it.

Actually, very few abilities, even ranged ones are homing in GW2. IE you can fire an arrow at someone and miss because they moved.

I'll give you some examples from different classes and the skills that they can employ that allow for evading or otherwise "intercepting/blocking an attack":
Shield Stance
25
Block incoming attacks.
Feigned Escape
10
Roll away from your target, summoning a clone that casts Winds of Chaos.
Illusionary Riposte
15
Block your foe, creating an illusion when attacked. If you are not attacked, gain retaliation.
Retreating Grapple
20
Retreat while firing a grappling line at your foe, then pull them toward you.
Burning Retreat
20
Quickly roll backwards, leaving behind a line of fire that burns.
Line of Warding
45
Draw a line in front of you that foes cannot cross.

You originally stated:
"The only players that I want running back to Tera are the people that actually want a combat engine where they can actively move out of the way/block of a person's attack. GW2 doesn't even the option of intercepting/blocking an attack aimed at an ally player."

Absolutely, a reasonable request.
