I do know that the 6800 series by nVidia is a better chipset than ATI's X800 series chipset, and that the 6800Ultra will out perfrom the X800 Pro.

You could go cheaper if you want the X800 Pro though as the Toxic series by Sapphire is nearly $500 US. Sapphire makes an X800 Pro card for $379 US at Newegg.. I would recommend going with the 6800 Ultra though as it is a much better performing card than the X800Pro.

Yeah, I agree Gunblade. ATI's 9600 and 9800 line are really good(getting a little dated for today's games...still good cards though), but they missed the boat on the X800 and other Xxxx series cards. I'm not saying they are "bad" cards as they offer good performance, but the nVidia 6800 and 6600 chipsets are superior. In addition, the X800 cards are expensive.

I have a quick question about RAM. I have a board that has 3 DIMMs, 2 are in a dual channel setup. Can I use just the dual channel, or does the single need to be filled first? A friend told me that wasthe case, but I have my doubts.

Linux is free.....if your time costs nothing.

  • Smelly_ArmorSmelly_Armor Member UncommonPosts: 571

Depending on what motherboard you have, there is an optimum configuration setup based on what type of memory and how many sticks of it you will be using. It is not true that you have to fill the single channel DIMM slot to use the dual channel DIMM slot, your friend is mistaken. Refer to your board's manual which should have a table to configure your memory set up. If not refer to the manufacturer's web site.

Do you have two sticks of ram you are wanting to install and run in dual channel??? If so, what board are you using???

I have a DFI Lanparty NFII Ultra B, right now I only have 512 of RAM in the single channel slot.

Depends on what kind of motherboard you have. Does it have PCI slots (white short ones), AGP slot (short brown one), or PCI Express (long black one)? Also how much are you looking to spend?

    OMG DELL COMPUTERS SUCK MAN

  • MisfitZMisfitZ Member Posts: 368

Wow, you have USB 2.5, eh? That's pretty rockin.

And for the record, Dell makes some pretty badass computers. Their warranty is also awesome. Their tech support blows. It's outsourced to india, and I have trouble understanding their accents most of the time, and they don't know what the fuck they're talking about when I can understand them.

Anyways, you're ignorant. Dell does rock, you just pay for it.

    -----------------------------
Listen Asmodeeus, seven years ago, Ultima Online didn't even have those pathetic "quests" that you refer to or those "professions" of ninja, samurai, necromancer, and paladin. Nor did it have any of the neon crap, or bug mounts. It didn't even have any "combat moves." You turned on attack and jousted with simplistic swings. It was a better game then. if you can't guess why then just uninstall the thing and move along. - Crabby

Dell computers don't suck. While they may not use the best parts always and can't compare to a custom built pc or one you build yourself, they certainly don't suck. If I couldn't build my own or afford a custom built pc, I would choose Dell over Gateway, HP, Compaq, EMachines, Sony and the like. Dell systems have good warranties and perform most pc tasks adequately.

Since I've built my own though, I can never go back to Dell, HP/Compaq or any other such pc manufacturer.image

I agree whole heartedly wolf. My first PC ever was a Dell and it served me very well for the tasks I needed it for. Also the customer service I recieved was awesome to say the least. I had a guy stay on the phone with me for hours trying to solve a problem I was having. He never sounded annoyed eithier.

I too wouldn't go back after building my computer. It's just a much more rewarding experience to do it yourself.

to be honest....dell and gateways are for people who have money and for people who dont know too much about computers...and thats kinda it

a computer part is a computer part...

the only thing i really dont like about pre-made systems is the integrated sound/video card situation sold by most companies; alot of my friends who really dont know about computers get that junk and soon realize they need to spend another $200 or more for a video card or their sound is all fucked up cuz they dont have a "real" soundcard...its a good learning process

i have a gateway from '01....1gig of rambus^^ just upgraded my video card from a geforce2 to a geforce4 ti(i'd rather spend my $200 dollars on bitches and blunts), just got an awesome deal from best buy- 120gig maxtor hd for $90 with a $60 rebate(i dont like rebates either), i just bought a $30 dollar surround sound from walmart...

its like getting on the net first....you had aol or whatever and now you know about broadband and you realize you dont need fluff.

The 6800s are better than the X800s in terms of Speed but they require more power for things like its 6 LED blue lights. Don't get me wrong, I think the LEDs are pimping fo' shizzy but a lot of people need PSUs in the 430-500 range to run it. Plus, the 6800 ultra GT 256 DDR3 is 100 more dollars than the X800XT. Wait, is that correct? I may have the platinum edition mixed up with the XT.

looking to get a laptop to use for gaming, but also something that will last me through college and i guess my main question is . . . if i get a laptop with an AMD64 will the release of 64 bit operating systems, programs, and other such things make up for the lack of clock speed as far as other-than-gaming programs go?

Make of it what you will.

The big thing you gain by 64 bit is the ability to pack in more memory.  As motherboard bios catch up, 64 bit addressing allows you to stuff upto 15 GB ram into a computer.  As you know 15 gb ram will cost you a fortune anyway, so this is mainly to improve systems running serious servers, Workstations and simulation models.  The average joe would probably do well at this time to stick to 32bit as many boards take up to 3gb ram which is more than enough for any game and will still cost you 380 bucks or more.  If you are running a 32bit OS, ie Winxp Home, I don't think you are gaining much.  If I were you I'd probably stick with a P4 mobile processor, but good luck with your hunt. ;)

It is a misnomer that just because a cpu has a faster clock frequency it is faster. The architecture of the cpu as well as it's instruction set also play a key role in the performance of the cpu. That is why an AMD socket 754 Athlon64 3000+ running at 2.0ghz or an socket939 Athlon64 3000+ running at 1.8ghz is as fast or performs as well as an socket 478 Intel P4 3.0C or LGA 775 P4 530 running at 3.0ghz and so on. Both Intel and AMD are making top notch cpus right now. If you want a general purpose system and/or gaming system go with an AMD Athlon64 or FX cpu on either socket 754 or socket 939. If you are going to be doing any video work in addition to playing games though, I would go with an LGA 775 Intel P4.

Using a 64bit o/s, whether you will use Linux or the up and coming MS Longhorn product, with any 64bit cpu, whether it be the Athlon64/FX/Opteron or Intel Xeon/up and coming 64bit P4(don't know if that is what it'll be called by Intel), will tap into the x86-64 instruction set on these cpus and is supposed to be faster and more efficient in theory. Some results with 64bit beta o/s and apps have shown promising results. I agree with Tacklebury in one sense that I would wait to build a system with a 64bit cpu until the latter have of this year unless you want to go ahead and be ready for the 64bit revolution which will occur this year and really take flight in 2006. I will say that the Athlon64 and FX cpus are actually very efficient and fast with 32bit o/s and apps, but I wouldn't upgrade from a socket 478 Intel P4 3.0C or faster or a socket A AMD AthlonXP 3000+ or faster just yet.
