ArenaNet Founder Mike O'Brien will be Satisfied when guild wars 2 is the most succesful MMo .Period

BOYCOTTING EA / ORIGIN going forward.
So what they want and will not settle for anything other than, is beat WOW?

Mike O'Brien said just the opposite of that in a recent interview linked in another thread. So no, they are not thinking they will be the "WoW Killer." Only Blizzard can kill WoW.

I know its a forbes interview and as such he has to talk a big game and be super confident in the face of his other alpha male CEO's brethren, but WOW killer? come on. Anybody who believes any game is going to corner 80% of the installed playerbase of the MMO market is a lunatic. People's tastes are just too diverse.

you have to kill the king before you can wear the crown.
I was referring to this.
Mike O'brien:
"We were number two to World of Warcraft with Guild Wars, now we want to beat them. We’ll be satisfied when Guild Wars 2 is the most successful MMO"
And how do they consider a non-sub-based game as being number two to the number one Sub based game?

That quote has NOTHING, ABSOLUTELY PROFOUNDLY GOT NOTHING to do with killing WoW. Think about it a little.

Read post 7 then explain this. By WOW killer I mean "beat WOW"...
For every minute you are angry , you lose 60 seconds of happiness."-Emerson
I love how when people consider the next biggest MMOs after WoW, they never include the Asian market.
Also, considering how often players have heard "this game will kill WoW" and seen that fail, why would anyone throw down that gauntlet? Sure GW2 has an excellent chance at becoming huge, but what WoW has done is a fluke. Why not wait and see what happens first...?
*using killing WoW as a general term for being more successful, not actually driving it out of the market
"As for the World of Warcraft-killer slogan that has been bandied about in the press, O’Brien said “nothing is going to kill WoW other than WoW"
That quote is taken directly from the article linked in the OP, which I'm sure you read, right?
That is a good question, I would like to know what he meant by being number two. Number two in what? Quality? Content? What exactly? Since there were no subs you can't really go by that, what is the standard he is using for comparison?
WHy do people take everything so literal, WOW killer is another way to say "beat WOW" which is his exact motivation he stresses in the article..

With having no subscription fee, GW2 has the potential to be on par with WoW numbers. I know lots of people that will be playing both. It really is going to come down to the first 3 months, if the game delivers, IMO.
What happens when you log off your characters????.....

Dark Age of Camelot
As for the World of Warcraft-killer slogan that has been bandied about in the press, O’Brien said “nothing is going to kill WoW other than WoW. Games just don’t die. But do gamers think we’ve seen the most popular online game we’ve ever seen and we’ll never see something more popular than that? I don’t think so. One MMO has been on the top of the heap for seven years now, but there’s been a progression in the industry for other games being able to attract more and more players. And we’re set to climb to the top.”
~The only opinion that matters is your own.Everything else is just advice,~
I didn't see that and certainly can't argue with your reasoning. It definitely appears that he indeed DID say he wanted to be the most successful MMO, and that would require "beating" WoW, so....you're right apparently. I don't think that dream will come to fruition, but whatever floats his boat I guess. I can imagine GW2 being second to WoW, but it's certainly hard to imagine it beating WoW outright in players....guess you couldn't judge by subs in this case.

Problem is there's nothing to gauge who is a subscriber and who isn't. An account/box sale doesn't mean the same thing as a subscribed user.

I have pre-purchased this game, and thoroughly enjoyed Guild Wars (the first)...
...however, even as a fan I'm starting to find their hype machine to be a bit much. A year or so ago I did feel it was more of a "proof is in the puddin'" approach, I don't find it to be that way any longer. I'll be happy when this game releases, these kinds of claims are getting a bit ridiculous.
I don't know why everyone thinks beating WoW is this impossible goal. Every champion eventually falls, and to be honest, WoW is in a decline anyway. It's actually losing subs, and has been for some time now. It's finally getting dated, people are tired of it and want something different.
And I also don't see why a developer shouldn't shoot for the stars with their game. I mean, who pours their heart and soul into a game and then says: "I'd be happy with fourth place."
????
Are you team Azeroth, team Tyria, or team Jacob?
Sad to see devs get caught up in their own hype machine. More successful than WoW?? Like financially? Cuz he's dreaming if that's what he means... Plus they had their chance against WoW and didn't even come close to it's success, now it's a victory 7 years later with a whole new game? Umm no.
I'm sure GW2 will be great fun, but these guys are starting to sound just like all the rest...
On further thought, I think another person was right that he's talking in this way due to the forum he's speaking to. It's Forbes afterall, which is all about showcasing success and those who think "big".
For every minute you are angry , you lose 60 seconds of happiness."-Emerson
When I think of WoW's success, I think of its number of subscribers and the fact that its simplicity was in the right place at the right time. When I think of GW's success, I think of it as one of, if not the, highest-rated games of all time by players. GW2 shouldn't care about what any other MMO is doing; it should just stand apart and do that well (like GW did).
Success will be measured another way. Just like Nielson's are a poor way to measure whose watching what in 2012 so is sub numbers for game.s
We're going to look at things like total monthly revenue, active players, and player satisfaction.
Guild WArs 2 is killing the style of WOW. As soon as GW2 went into development, they set on making the next generation mmo, and no on'es really thinking about that.
Can we not see that "beating WOW' has been one of the major downfalls for many in this genre? It's not about whether it's doable, it's about FOCUS...

Can you explain further? How does saying "we want to be the best" become your downfall???
