Great, I love the confidence he has on the game, all hell shall break loose after this beta, we'll experience for ourselves what GW2 really has to offer.
Seem more like egotistic to me. GW2 community and staff remind me more and more of Warhammer's community and developers.
So what they want and will not settle for anything other than, is a WOW killer?
Mike O'Brien said just the opposite of that in a recent interview linked in another thread. So no, they are not thinking they will be the "WoW Killer." Only Blizzard can kill WoW.
I was referring to this.
Mike O'brien:
"We were number two to World of Warcraft with Guild Wars, now we want to beat them. We’ll be satisfied when Guild Wars 2 is the most successful MMO"
And how do they consider a non-sub-based game as being number two to the number one Sub based game?
That's stupid... How can GW be second to World of Warcraft when it's not a MMO? This is my point on why I don't trust Anet's marketing. Because they claimed that GW1 wasn't advertised as a MMORPG, but here they are doing it again and advertising it as a MMO by comparing it to MMO. VERY MISLEADING!!!
Step back a little and think for a second, look at the audience they are talking to. These people cant tell the difference between WoW and GW, to them they are all the same, they just know WoW is the biggest MMO and that GW is a league below it. To entice the readers and future investors they are simplifying it and just calling it an MMO, here we have people that debate the words used to define the gender on a daily basis but out there in a real world i know some people who dont even know what the meaning of the word MMORPG is and they play WoW.
He never said it ws going to be a WoW killer, he stated he wished (and will) dethrone WoW from the top seat. Just because WoW is #2 doesn't mean it would be dead. @Distopia and whoever else also got confused.
I've never thought the term WOW killer to actually mean Kill WOW, it's nothing more than a quip, used in reference to the goal of beating WOW, ( at least that's where it started). WOW was the EQ/SWG killer, yet EQ/SWG never died (at the time). I'm more confused that I have to explain what I meant, even after supplying the direct quote (not to mention my posts through the rest of the thread) I was referring to.
I was simply basing my comment of your first post an several others ofter it. Your name was the only one I could remember while writing it, but it was toward the several people who seem offended that any such idea should arise. Also, I take words literaly, so I am sorry if I got confused on what a "WoW KILLER" is. Of course, I do not think I did, becuase he later specifically mentions GW2 will not kill WoW... so any person who read after should have been able to put two and two together if they thought about it (not to you Distopia).

I personally got to that point and was done with the article, as it really didn't interest me to begin with, I couldn't care less how successful any game is. My post originally was just a summation of what I had read to that point (I thought it a fairly accurate one as well) I left it to others to make of that what they would, of course it didn't really go as planned lol as they took it somewhere else (something I never meant to say).

With having no subscription fee, GW2 has the potential to be on par with WoW numbers. I know lots of people that will be playing both. It really is going to come down to the first 3 months, if the game delivers, IMO.
Problem is there's nothing to gauge who is a subscriber and who isn't. An account/box sale doesn't mean the same thing as a subscribed user.
Maybe he thinks they will sell over 10 million boxes? Ley's hope his confidence in this game is well-founded. Will be win-win for players and Anet.

When your business model is B2P, box sales are what matters. A requirement for being an MMO isn't that it requires a subscription fee. Box sales will be the intitial metric and ongoing sales / expansion sales will give people an idea on retention/growth of GW2 moving forward.

Oh there are going to be clones for sure. No manner what game finally takes the #1 spot, most AAA developers will attempt to cash in by copying it. It's just how the industry works. AAA developers have to present a sure thing to their investors and publishers so there isn't a lot of room for experimentation. Mostly indie developers attempt something different. Unfortunately indie guys rarely have enough capital to fully realize their dream and we get half-assed games with a lot of potential which rarely gets realized.

From a business perspective, you're right. I think what Distopia may have been getting at, is that unlike GW1, GW2 has servers. While subscriptions don't tell us as much as they used to (companies have long since distorted that data), they do tend to give us a metric of how many people are actually playing.
For GW2, we will need some kind of 3rd party database to get this info. This will be especially important for WvW, to see which servers are more popular over others.
Side-note: All in all, it is somewhat of a tricky subject (one that hasn't been talked about much). No one wants to play on a low-pop server, but on the flip side, publicizing population data can skew server balance in one way or another. It will be interesting if that becomes a problem / what Anet decides to do about it, as I can't think of any company that has solved that yet.
So what they want and will not settle for anything other than, is a WOW killer?

hahahah wouldn't that be ironic complaining about all the GW2 Clones!
Hypothetical situation, if WoW is slowly killing itself and GW2 ends up being the most popular MMO,
does that mean GW2 killed WoW? I don't believe so.
That is something else entirely and probably a more important point, WOW is old now, it's fire may get a gentle relighting from MOP, but how long will that last/can it last?

With Buy to Play, there is a better opportunity to retain customers who play occassionally. A couple hours every Thursday night might not justify $15/month, but may make perfect sense for someone who has purchased GW2. Server capacity is more fluid with GW2 as more regular, low activity customers play month after month and loyally buy expansion packs, but don't account for much server capacity.
The ablity to freely move from server to server for PVE, plus the existance of overflow servers for those rare times when normal server capacity is exceeded, really change the dynamics of server metrics for determining the health of the game.
Box sales and expansion sales will always be the clearest metric for growth and success. Does it make apples for apples comparisons a bit more difficult? Sure. However, you have to judge the game based on it's business model. The player who buys the original box and every paid expansion that ever comes out, but only plays a month or two a year, is just as valuable a customer as one who plays the game for hundreds of hours per year and also buys every expansion.
I don't know why everyone thinks beating WoW is this impossible goal. Every champion eventually falls, and to be honest, WoW is in a decline anyway. It's actually losing subs, and has been for some time now. It's finally getting dated, people are tired of it and want something different.
And I also don't see why a developer shouldn't shoot for the stars with their game. I mean, who pours their heart and soul into a game and then says: "I'd be happy with fourth place."

Can we not see that "beating WOW' has been one of the major downfalls for many in this genre? It's not about whether it's doable, it's about FOCUS...

Are you trying to mislead people into believing GW2 ISNT an MMO?
He is the CEO of the company, a former Blizzard employee and one of the creators of Guild Wars. In terms of total box sales for an IP, his game was second only to WoW. 6.5 million box sales over 3 inter-playable games and an expansion to 13+ million for a game + multiple expansions. So, he has a vested interest in "beating" WoW.
He never said anything about being a WoW killer. He merely wants to sell more copies than WoW did with all of its expansions. This translates to: The CEO of ArenaNet wants to sell more than 13+ million copies of Guild Wars 2 over time. And why not? He is aiming high. As an old teacher taught me: If you aim for the streetlight and fail, you will land in the gutter. If you aim for the moon and fail, you will land in the stars. How can landing in the stars be a bad thing? I want to see companies aim to be the best, the most successful, etc. And in the MMO realm, you need to be a really good game in order to be successful. So, success, in this case, means good game.
I for one wish ArenaNet luck in topping total sales of WoW. It's a lofty endeavor and a difficult one to achieve, but a commendable one IMO.
I probably wouldn't have pre-purchased the game if I thought they were only out to be mediocre.
You want me to pay to play a game I already paid for???

Sure it is. For better or worse, WoW is THE standard for MMOs. If you want to be considered the best, (i.e. most successful - because that's how these things are judged by the world) then you need to "beat" the best. Beating in this case refers to selling more boxes, not making it so the game has to shut down because everyone fled for your game.
