Well i would have to say that the most popular mmo atm has somewhere between 3-4 mil subscriptions tops so it would need 2 sell more than that.
The most popular MMO is WoW and it currently has 10,000,000 active accounts. Just sayin.
Incorrect WoW sold 12 million copies world wide including downlaoded versions, 6.7 mil BC copies 6.3 mil Wolk and 4.7 mil cata copies. You cant tell me over 5 million people are playing the vanila WoW.
Blizzard was taking sub number out of there ass to make themself look better than they realy are. Current sub im going to be assuming blizzard counting every sub including inactive accounts but not counting banned ones, there technicaly not lieing because inactivbe accoutn are still subscribed there just inactive while banned accounts are deleated and no longer exsist (I also dont beleive WoW ever had 12mil active account active at the same time).
You need a subscription to be a subscriber. Just having an account does not make you a subscriber. I rather believe what Blizzard says over some random forum user without any links or proofs to his claims since I believe Blizzard cant lie that they have 6+ more million players than they actually have to their stock holders / the whole world, and get away with it. I never heard any breaking news about Blizzard being full of shit with their sayings.

Over a few years with a few Xpacs, GW2 will prooly sell around 2~3mil copies (maybe less) on launch. Id buy it, but 150 Euro for a CE is a bit harsh, and I don't buy nonCE versions of big titles.

Blizzard claims they still have 11.4 million subscribers at the end of march in 2011, Quote During the call, CEO of Blizzard Entertainment Mike Morhaime pointed out that World of Warcraft had fallen again to pre-Cataclysm subscriber levels -- 11.4 million subscribers at the end of March, down from its peak of 12 million.(Source -

People Who are playing the original game + Burning crusade = 0.48 million
So again according to blizzard at the end of march 2011 they drop from 12 million subs to 11.4 million subs but yet they have only ever sold a total of 11.9 million copies of the ORIGINAL WoW. Also dont forget they baned China from playing WoW

Stop assuming when blizzard plain as day has described on numerous occasions what it takes to be considered a subscriber to WOW. they are beating the rest of the industry so badly there is no reason to lie about the numbers.
I just read NCSofts analysts predictions and they themselves predict close to 3.12Million sales between North America and Europe. So like I said, about 1.5 million North American subs if lucky.....
thanks for completely ignoring the part where I stated longer than a 12 month interval
So you take box sales as criteria for biggest mmo ? What about f2p mmo's ? They don't have any box sales at all. And you also can't compare b2p sales to p2p sales with subscription. Makes no sense either.
Better criteria for biggest mmo are probably profit or active players. But those numbers are difficult to get.

have you ever read what blizzard considers an active subscriber? in NA/EU its obviously some one with an active subscription. In Asia though its different because the way the game is ran. China for instance is pay by the hour and you can purchase hours in bulk. What this breaks down to is if a player still has time on his account he's considered an active subscriber. I'm not sure how long they have till the time expires or if it ever does expire. I know Korea pays for game time as well but I'm not sure how their subscription plan works or if its like China's.

I'm still missing the solid proof over speculation. I'm not clicking on those img links, could you provide me with a link to some trustworthy news site or something similar that explains the actual numbers in WoW? It's just still kinda hard to see that Blizzard plays the whole world and you are one of the few who knows the truth. When was WoW banned is China?
I really want to believe you because it IS kinda amazing that the old game with very little gameplay improvements with ancient graphics etc etc would have so many players, but there's stuff like community and player bonds keeping it all together also. I just learned that my vanilla WoW guild which dissolved when most players quit at the end of TBC is now up and running with most of its original members back and active. These things also happen, when people had fun together and cant form up on other games.

Yes, I know about China. We could propably go back and forth speculating if there's actually any players or not of WoW in China, how much they pay and how much they play and does it fit our own personal opinions of an active subscriber or player with a different kind of business model when comparing to the overall active players of the world.
That game won't even hit 1 million in north america, you do realize this, correct?
Didnt GW1 hit something like 6 million without breaking a sweat? Ahem.....
GW1 sold 7 million copies and most people still play it from time to time because its free to play. It was 2nd place to number of copies sold in the genrea.
that 7 million number includes xpacks. so if someone bought the original game and the 4 xpacs they got counted 5 times. that puts the number of gamers closer to 3-4 million, and it took roughly 7 years to hit that. that number also includes all the people that bought it at launch and hated the game.
a huge IP recently sold about 2 million copies at launch. if gw2 has sold 1 million at launch i will be impressed.

This sounds so much closer to the truth than alot of the shit folks have been spewing about this game on this thread acting like this particular mmorpg made any kind of real impact, I would fathom that most mmorpg players have never played GW (I did) but that game was not all that popping and to the person who says that most people still pop in from time to time please back that up with something other than your own assertion that people still pop in from time to tim because I as one of the original purchasers of the game haven't played it once since the first month I bought it and it sure doesn't have much traffic on mmorpg (never di either).
Im just wondring at what number of sales you would consider guild wars 2 to be the biggest mmo todate
Well clearly it would have to be 12+ million, otherwise it wouldn't be the biggest to date.
Completely unrealistic though.
If we take WoW out of the game though then if GW2 sells 6,000,000 it will be the biggest to date (other than WoW.)
No WoW fanboi here. (I haven't played in years and MoP makes me shudder) But one can't just take WoW out of the equation and say OZMG GW2 sold 6million and one boxes its the biggest! So GW3 will have to sell at least 11 milllion boxes, and if you start counting WoW's expansions alot more
WOW with all of its expansions (and soon to be another) has easily passed the 25M mark in box sales so that's the mark for GW2 to shoot for.
And as someone else said, GW2 needs a whole lot more marketing/years before it goes anywhere near those kinds of numbers.
But its B2P model may prove revolutionary enough to do it, especially if the game play changes also are what most of the market has been looking for. (and it may well be)

You can't even begin to guess the number of units sold based on subscription numbers. It depends how many purchases convert to subscribers, which varies dramatically from one game to the next.
I think GW2 will do better than GW1, so over 3 million sold worldwide, but I don't know by how much. I also wouldn't care to use the world global anywhere in my estimates, because I know it won't have the Asian territories to bolster the number. I don't even think it can compete with the large Asian games, no western title does.
Can't see it doing better than WoW either if you're just looking at NA/EU, might do SWTOR numbers, but it is hard to tell, there isn't the same mass market presence that SWTOR had pre-launch, although it does have more fanatical fans.

Lol... GW bearly was sold in asian market because it wasn't a type of game which is popular in asia. Next, the most sold numbers are between europe and north america... Stop making out numbers of your own and use it as facts...

Its B2P for sure but there is a cash shop so they can make more cash on the go.. Nothing really revolutionary about that other than the fact that most games with a cash shop are actually free and you dont need to pay up front for anything LOL.. so really your kinda getting ripped off paying the silly amount they are asking for GW2 LOL
anyway back to the OP post why on earth does this even matter, if you like the game play it.. if you dont like the game then dont play it woh really cares it it sells 20000000 akakabillion copies

Ok then take this for example
Here a chart on what blizzard beleives are there current subscribers
http://i.imgur.com/HTidt.jpg
Now here there WoW sales for retail and digital downlaods which was confirmed by NPD
http://i.imgur.com/bGmIC.jpg
original game sold - 11.9 million
Burning Crusade sold - 7.42 million
WolK sold - 6.94 million
(With a quick google search roghtly 4.7million cataclysm sold in the first month now this would of been 90% of the copies bought total because most player would of bought the game withing the first month of it coming out http://wow.joystiq.com/2011/01/10/cataclysm-sells-4-7-million-copies-in-one-month/)
Blizzard claims they still have 11.4 million subscribers at the end of march in 2011, Quote During the call, CEO of Blizzard Entertainment Mike Morhaime pointed out that World of Warcraft had fallen again to pre-Cataclysm subscriber levels -- 11.4 million subscribers at the end of March, down from its peak of 12 million.(Source -
http://wow.joystiq.com/2011/05/09/world-of-warcraft-dips-to-a-mere-11-4-million-subscribers/)
So lets see by using these numbers
People just playing the original game and still subscribed = 4.48 million
People Who are playing the original game + Burning crusade = 0.48 million
So again according to blizzard at the end of march 2011 they drop from 12 million subs to 11.4 million subs but yet they have only ever sold a total of 11.9 million copies of the ORIGINAL WoW. Also dont forget they baned China from playing WoW
