    so a example would be

    would you consider

    40 million sales

    30 million sales

    20 million sales

    1 million sales

    ,ectra

before we know any  figures   it would be intresting to know what  people would consider in  sales to  make  it the  the biggest mmo to date

GW2 is B2P and NOT P2P, so if you want to compare sales, you should do it with a B2P game, like ME3, BF3 etc and not with games with a sub. They can sell 10 mill of copies, but then after a month have less than 300k active players, while a p2p MMO could sell just 2 mill of copies and keep the 2 mill of subs for a year, again as an example, so you cant compare a b2p MMO sales with a P2P.

Well, there has been made some 40 mil WoW accounts over the years. Now most of those people bought expansions as well. Only God (and Blizzard) knows how many actual boxes they sold. 100mil? 150mil? Something ridiculous like that.

Compared that to the 7mil sold boxes GW1 (and its expansions) had. That`s just insane.

But what happens when WoW starts "borrowing" features of GW2, like they did when they instituted "scenarios" which are simply instanced DEs?

Honestly I fully expect Blizzard to borrow a ton of stuff from GW2 if GW2 proves to be a massive success and I wouldn't mind at all. Unlike a lot of people, I don't have any hate for WoW. I played it for 7 years and have only fond memories. It got stale for me. That whole style of MMOs got stale for me. To me Blizz is like Microsoft, they freely borrow and add their own things to what's popular.

Well obviously WoW has been the most successful selling MMO to date.  So the question, which doesn't necessarily involve GW2, is simply how many copies has WoW sold?

While I don't know any exact figures for lifetime box sales for WoW, we know that at one time they had upwards of 11.3 million current subscribers.  They continue to hold around 10 million.  We also know that everyone who purchased WoW at one time or another has not consistently subscribed.  I daresay that, at any given moment in time, at least 2 or 3 times the number of current subscribers have purchased a copy of WoW at one point (whichever expansion was relevant at the time) but are no longer playing, which would put total box sales between 30 and 40 million.

It's always important to note that no game, including WoW, sells in numbers like this on release.  Stats like these accumulate over the years, and the best games GROW after release as word of mouth spreads about just how damn good the game is.  They don't merely "retain" their release sales numbers.

IF we are simply talking revenues, I don't see how GW can beat WoW. WoW sold so many box copies 40m, 100m (I am pretty sure I read a Blizzard interview mentioning in excess of 100m some time ago) + they have had shitloads of subscribers over SEVEN years. Even vanilla WoW had some crazy numbers like 8m subscribers. I think WoW reached 8m during vanilla.

Can you imagine the amount of money they've made from all the boxes, subs, flying ponies and Warcraft merchandise??? How can GW2 possibly beat that?

Well clearly it would have to be 12+ million, otherwise it wouldn't be the biggest to date.

    Completely unrealistic though.

If we take WoW out of the game though then if GW2 sells 6,000,000 it will be the biggest to date (other than WoW.)

GW1 have sold 7 million copies and it was not a MMO, it was a COOP-RPG and you think GW2 will not sell more than GW1? Okay. It can beat WoW in term of sales, but it will be though.

I think WoW sold around 5 million copies of Cataclysm, worldwide, sd I guess that's the number to beat.

1 more than the current biggest MMO?

I expect GW2 to hit it's peak when the first expansion comes around.

I don't think it will come even close to toppling WoW, but I think it will be the game to set things in motion. When people talk about the second turning point in MMO gaming, WoW being the first, they will start with mentioning GW2.

I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it.

How can Frogster make over 30 million in profits a year on a game they never sold a single copy of since it way F2P?

Guild Wars 2 is a professional level production. There is no reason at all that it should not make x10 the amount of crap games like Runes of Magic, Atlantica Online or any of the Perfect World games.

All it takes is the right microtransaction items and they will rake in far more than just about any MMO sub based game.

Nonsense. WoW's model of charging for the box + sub + shiny ponies is the ultimate money maker :D

Didnt GW1 hit something like 6 million without breaking a sweat?  Ahem.....

GW1 sold 7 million copies and most people still play it from time to time because its free to play.

Over a few years with a few Xpacs, GW2 will prooly sell around 2~3mil copies (maybe less) on launch. Id buy it, but 150 Euro for a CE is a bit harsh, and I don't buy nonCE versions of big titles.

lol... :D just, lol... So you're not buying the CE becuase it costs much (SWTOR was at that price as well) so you're just gonna pass on the game xD

And whats so weird in that? Id rather miss out on a game then pay 150 euros + spend money in the cash shop, not to mention nonCE version is lame( as it should be, the CE also isn't top notch, they're just being greedy with the price, a figurine like that costs 30 euros on its own, that still leaves you with a price of 120 euros for an artbook ) , I'll just find different ways to occupy myself, D3 CE cost 70~ Euros and that game is actually f2p, and who knows what they'll add to the GW2 cashshop when active player numbers start dropping ). I didn't buy SWTOR either.

Obvious answer is obvious... there's no real point to this thread. To be the biggest ever, you have to do more than the previous biggest ever.

I understand when  a brother needs to make his cash stretch. Believe me, I've been there. But what I don't get is the the talk about the figurines and artbooks.  Damn it boy, it doesn't have to be Collectors Edition or not playing GW2.  Enjoy your no monthly sub fees and just play the plain 'ol vanilla game.

It should have about 80 million sales. Afaik there is one MMORPG in Korea with more than 70 million accounts. Beat that!

  • sanshi44sanshi44 Member UncommonPosts: 1,187

so 48 servers for first beta weekend (non press one) so there must of been quite alot of pre-purchases so far to warrant so many in the first weekend.

They still have to have an active account in order to be counted as active subscription, fact. So your point is invalid.

What about the multiple accounts on GW1? Or any other MMO for that matter.

  • ValuaValua Member Posts: 520

GW1 sold 7 million copies and is currently second in western markets, yep.

WoW sold in the range of 40-80 million copies.

    BIG DIFFERENCE between the two.

GW2 will have to outsell WoW to be the biggest MMO to date.

OK, I'll take a "shot" at this one:  GW2 will sell appoximately 10m to 20m units tops -- if for no ther reason than pure curiousity.  Hoever, we shall see, eh?

it would take years to beat WoW in terms of total numbers of boxes sold. and this figure is much higher than 12 millions. not counting, that we compare apples and oranges (P2P vs B2B)

the only thing, you might compare is: numbers of boxes sold in the 1st 3 month. if i remember right, WoW sold something about 2-3 million boxes during this launch-phase. just, if we summarize the US and the EU launch a few months later. GW2 might beat that number, but also becuase its B2B. time will tell the rest.

a real good figure, in order to measure success from a players point of view, would be "active players online in average". but i doubt you will get this figure. i just know this figure from EVE. another appropriate figure, we dont know, is "total hours played per week by all players".

if you like to measure success from a scientists point of view, you need the contribution margin per game. this figure is even harder to get.

played: Everquest I (6 years), EVE (3 years)
months: EQII, Vanguard, Siedler Online, SWTOR, Guild Wars 2
weeks: WoW, Shaiya, Darkfall, Florensia, Entropia, Aion, Lotro, Fallen Earth, Uncharted Waters
days: DDO, RoM, FFXIV, STO, Atlantica, PotBS, Maestia, WAR, AoC, Gods&Heroes, Cultures, RIFT, Forsaken World, Allodds

This is true, and I'm probably going to pick up GW2, just not on release.

Yeah, you can logon to the servers from a different country. By that I meant a Korean MMORPG.
