Watching PvP in MMORPGs always reminded me of that youtube video of the fat kid swinging a lightsaber. Always felt as if the melee fighting at least looked exactly like that.
In that respect, I don't mind the animation lock, though it is frustrating when attempting to kite something.
Anyone remember Aion? Yeah the animation lock killed PvP long before any of the other issues.

I haven't played TERA so I have no idea if this will be an issue for them. I have no interest in the game and I'm not bashing it just pointing out that the same thing existed in Aion and basically ruined and continues to ruin PvP to this day.
Where did this come from? Both systems are as equal as apples are to oranges. AION is not a free aim action game.
Both games lock you in place as you perform animations....seems like a clear connection to me. It was an issue raised by someone else, not me. That has nothing to do with whether it's tab target, free aim, or action as you seem to suggest. Maybe if you read my whole post your response would actually seem related.
In both games you're locked in place while you perform an animation during combat. This means you hit a button to perform certain skills and it actually no longer is a free aim action game because you're locked in place doing the little dance required prior to the delivery of damage. In any game with PvP that's a silly idea. Especially if your game is about movement and freedom.
Like I said I've never played TERA. I'm simply pointing out a mechanic that's present in the game, has been in other games, and was clearly a failure of a mechanic. Again not even bashing TERA here, just trying to discuss the whole getting locked in place thing.
It would be interesting if both games are successful and both developers hate each other - maybe it would improve the end product of updates if they are trying to one-up the other all the time. I don't think Tera has enough juice to really match up with GW2, but anything that might improve the developer mismanagement of games is a positive.
Why would Arenanet and Bluehole studios hate each other? It's more like they don't care about each other.
I don't really think they have it out for each other. If Tera does well I could see NCSoft exhibit some sore feelings, but that would influence Aion more than GW2, which they just publish.
But never underestimate the scorn of the bruised executive ego. If someone at either of the companies is nursing a grudge, the media sites will eat up any snark they might send out.
And since I'm going to play both games, I want them to both do well - and get run well. I'm TIRED of incompetent developers and moran managers.
Personally, I thought Tera was pretty cool, at least combat and graphics-wise. A nice choice of races and classes with decent customization, as well.
That being said, they picked a TERRIBLE weekend for OB, because Diablo 3 was also having its OB the same weekend... and while I tried playing both, Diablo 3 just hands-down was more fun and exciting for me and I couldn't stick to Tera for more than a 30-45 minute play period before I was itching to get back and play more D3.
It did make me realize that I'd rather just wait for D3 than throw my money down on anymore MMO's for a while, however.
But if people aren't currently playing anything and looking for a new game to play, Tera is pretty sweet from the bit I have played. A refreshing take on combat, with the animations for both players and enemies being top-notch, and the graphics are awesome.
Unless you're REALLY into lore, don't expect to be overly drawn in by all the quests, as they're pretty generic from what I've seen, but they do have them marked as either a main quest or just a side quest, so you can choose which quests to give a crap about and read, and also when I came up to my first named monster quest, there was a little cutscene that I believe had voice acting telling me about and showing me the monster. Was neat.

What Tera game were you playing? Because on my zerker I would do a move, and yeah it would lock the animation while it finished, but I could still move around my aim, so while my swinging axe WAS locked in its animation for less than a second, I was still able to turn it around and arc it behind me if I chose to.
Oh I see you didnt even actually play Tera and yet are forming an opinion.

SOME skills in TERA and mainly the main ranged skills for ranged classes.
Glyphs allow for more mobility.
Everything else: not locked in place but LOCKED IN ANIMATION. Huge difference. Why? Because WHILE IN ANIMATION you can direct the attack with your mouse/directional keys. If you played you'd know that.
Escape animation by dodging/blocking. As far as I got with sorcerer the dodge to cancel animation wasn't implemented for that particular class (balance designs).
Edit: Nevulus' post above mine confirms what I said in point 3. Again, anyone who HAS played TERA would know this.
Apples, oranges. Making comments like that on what you don't know makes it seem to others that you do know what you're talking about, they believe it and keep spreading misinformation.

This is just to address a common misconception going around recently about how Tera's combat animation system is "no good" due to a "lock in" of "animations"...
It's hogwash. Another lame attempt to demean a game simply out of insecurity (I'm looking at you GW2)...
You see, The Ninja Gaiden series, Devil May Cry series, Dark/Demon Souls and Soul Caliber are considered top "action" franchises...

The thing is, the animation lock will make it require a bit more strategy and less hacking and slashing mindlessly. You have free movement aside from abilities, and some of those abilities will hit multiple times powerfully. The thing is there is a bit of a cone where they can be hit with, but otherwise you're just gonna miss, which in PvP would leave you wide open for a couple seconds for a retaliation.
I actually dueled a mage character on my Slayer while I was on, and it was actually incredibly fun. I smacked him with my Whirlwind attack, knocked him down, smacked him a couple more time til he got up, he managed to back away and hit me a few times on a couple occasions but overall was no match for me, so I just kept rolling around and DODGING his magic attacks, getting in close range and ruining him.
This was a fun duel, and I think the PvP in Tera will be pretty sweet. Also I hear the game takes a while to REALLY get into, so I didn't play the game enough to majorly see the differences between this and other games later on, or really how the game shapes up in later levels or end-game.
I don't really think they have it out for each other. If Tera does well I could see NCSoft exhibit some sore feelings, but that would influence Aion more than GW2, which they just publish.

Well TERA wasn't a "financial success" in Korea and NCsoft had still sore feelings so i don't think how Tera will fare here in the west will have much impact. Ncsoft will be angry anyway.

How is 5th most played mmorpg and 9th most played mmo in Korea financial failure?
Tera is a pvp game, to most of you pve masters it will not appeal. Incoming flaming I know, but when was the last time you heard people say they pvp in a game because it's fun? So what if the pve is like WoW, or any othe rmmorpg. Guess what if you want a pve masterpiece go play WoW or EQ2. You wil find a home. If you want a game that is fun and enjoyable come play Tera, for it's pvp of course. It's not for everyone and I love when you tear jerker's roll on a pvp server. Then you complain some high lvl killed me. In GW2 there is no open PVP it's so much better. BLAH BLAH BLAH, all I hear as I kill you again and laugh in your face.
Not trolling but damn, the forum warriors from here are out in force. They must know what a good game is because they played MMO's for seven years "WoW" is most of their reference points. It's just sad to see a game that is trying something different when all of you supposed VETS complain about same old shit, and then bash it to hell. So what if questing is boring, get this leveling is fucking boring. Ever think about that? Most of you nerds that defended SWTOR because you leveled slow, then hit 50 after 3 months and quit, stopped posting around month 2 on MMORPG. Why is that? IT was different it brought whta you wanted? Because MMO's don't start til max lvl. You need 2 things to keep people around. 1 meaningful PVP, and decent PVE. Swtor did neither. Tera offers both, watch a video if you don't agree. In conclusion the newb dungeons in any other mmo are just that noob. Comparing the exposure you got in Tera to any endgame content is just ridiculous. Think about these things before you post.

Hey being 5th or 4th is completely unrelated to the financial success of a game
Despite more upbeat news of fresh content in the offing, the merges come amid reports of lower-than-expected financial performance according to publisher NHN Korea
According to foreign reports, Mr Park, the Development Director (or Chief Producer etc) for Bluehole Studio's maiden MMORPG, TERA, resigned on 29th July last week. This decision was said to be due to the game not meeting expectations and hitting planned targets
That's why i edited asap my message to change it to a more soft "wasn't a financial success". I had to expect this kind of angry answer.
Well let's say that when you develop a game and launch it with huge hype (in Korea) and more servers than Aion and then merge them to less than half in a few months... you can hardly call it a financial success.

I have heard this claim multiple times. Just wait and see at the end of the year if the players will farm instance and occasionally play battlegrounds (like it became in Korea) or if they will focus on the gvg and the political system.
Don't have too high expectations because i feel you will kind of disappointed when you find out that Tera is indeed a PVE focused game (with pvp added as an extra)
I read both the article on Kotaku and the tweet but neither of them really give solid reasons why Tera is better, other than..."I LIKE IT MORE". Tera is the same old PvE nonsense that we've seen for too long and the "action combat" is restrictive in that it locks you in place for every move you use. Just because GW2 has tab target option does not mean it's not as skill based. You can dodge attacks in GW2 and have MUCH better movement than Tera since everything can be cast while moving.
Something is fishy to me about these two big gaming outlets boasting Tera so soon after each other. Not to mention Tera's official twitter was very quick to retweet what that gabriel guy said.
and i was wondering when a gw2 fangirl will come ruin this
dude tera has the best combat system here and pvp start dealing with this

Same thing can be said about GW2, lol you like it more. To me GW2 has no feature I like. DE? I don't give a shit about PvE beside my dungeons, tab-target? tired of it already. Moving while casting? Thats i think is the thing that makes tab targetting even more boring when you kill any risk elements in using powerful kills. Dodge? O ya add a dodge skill exect you know what? In Tera i can dodge by just moving =O.
O ya and its not fishy that NCSoft pushes GW2 beta on top of Tera head start? And now every other site hype up a game almost no one has played?

There are no real penalities for dying in PVP, you don't lose anything of value, nor does your opponent win anything of value.
Right now PVP in Tera is pretty much for fun and that's it, at least compared with titles that I felt really had meaningful PVP such as DAOC and EVE.

I liked TERA until I hit lvl22 and started trying to solo BAMs. Now I am in love with it. I've been waiting for GW2 for about 4 years now, but I'm so excited for the release of TERA, I'm not even sure if i'll spend more than 20 minutes with GW2 this weekend.

There is a penality for dying actually you lose your crystals that you put in your weapon and armor and yes I know its not much right now but when you get to the higher levels and those crystals are costing you about 200 gold or so it will be a lot trust me.

I think the reason that i feel Tera is PvP game as well is that when you pvp it feel like completely different. First mmorpg that i play that took so much skill to play (beside grand chase that game took skills but its instance so ya =X) and the combat just fit PvP so well. While it has no purpose of now, PvP is what makes me want to play more. The massive GvG for no reason other than proud is working pretty well. And in all honestly thats what OWPVP and GvG are for, fun. I don't get it why people there should be reward for them, none of them are remotely on any fair grounds so any reward system would be abuse the shit out of.
I can't wait for battleground either to make a 5v5 team and put out skill to the test. And i'm glad battle ground is coming later because it gives me much more time to learn. Right now most Tera pvper sucks (beside some that play KTera) and i'm seriously most people don't know how to play, so if you have battle ground now all you get is thsi small group of people slaughtering ever pretty much.
The problem is that so many people are arguing against Tera, but they haven't ever touched it.
I myselve was not so impressed too from videos, talking etc. But I gave it a try... and the more I played it the more I realized how great it is to do pvp here where there isn't any hit rating any more. The hit rating depens solely on you and its so well controlled and detailed. Alone the fact that there is collision detection, you move slower while doing moves etc. There is so much you can take into account while fighting.
GW2 maybe a nice game, but exept the quest system there is really nothing new... and the pvp is horrendous for me (I hate instaned fair pvp in battlegrounds with some rankings thrown in). So I have to say even though Tera doesnt have this big marketing Hype as GW, but it will stand for its own. Can't wait for the dynamic open world pvp, guild wars drama, political control etc.
Currently playing: Archeage Waiting for: Black Desert

Btw Tera had its hype moment at the start of 2011 when it launched in Korea. Of course right now it's not really hyped since it's an old game and lots of people already played it.
What's lacking is the word of mouth. Gw2 has minimal marketing all the hype is created by word of mouth generated by fans. You don't see many banners or commercials around
Enmasse should market their game in more efficient way than the lame mmo-fo commercials (god that was awful). Frogster on the other hand is just plain terrible. With Frogster marketing and customer service It will be a miracle if the game won't die before autumn in Europe.

Enmasse should market their game in more efficient way than the lame mmo-fo commercials (god that was awful). Frogster on the other hand is just plain terrible. With Frogster marketing and customer service It will be a miracle if the game won't die before autumn in Europe.
I strongly disagree. GW2 ads are all over the place, there are even popup banners around. Also the company is big, every owner of one of their previous Games got several advertisments emails. On every bigger gaming convention there was massive talk about GW2. Believe me one thing it got hyped a lot! We are far off from word of mouth...
In contradiction I have yet to see a real Tera commercial anyway (except a few banners here and there). For sure it got its hype in Korea earlier, but we are talking about the western market here. Here it got mostly spread over some larger fansites and their fanbase - that's what I would call word of mouth. Also korean games are not well accepted here, so its even more amazing to see how much of a western audience this game got.

The game is "new" here and very few people have played it in respect to the number that is playing now in NA/EU. Of course we have been able to see tons of videos so we are at least familiar in that regard. What ever happened in KTERA stays in KTERA and what we have here is "NA/EU" and looks to be content packed.
I don't think EME would benefit from dumping money into promoting TERA any more than it is already. GW2 is it's major competition and the hype created by it's IP is not worth competing with. I see one of two things happeneing if EME is holding onto marketing dollars having to do with a three month window. If GW2 announces a release date longer than three months EME should pull the trigger on the marketing shortly after the announcement. If GW2 is announced sooner EME should hold off until three months after GW2 launches.
It's fact that every game will see a drop in subs once GW2 comes out, you can't stop it. The IP is huge in the MMO world and it brings a list of bullet points that sound different and refreshing. My opinion is that once the slogans and chanting of "change" hit reality there will be a large group leaving. That moment is when EME should have TERA on a pedistal.

Mmmh imho it's difficult for a mmorpg to increase its number after launch. I mean only wow managed to do so.
Imho Enmasse (nevermind Frogster) should act right now.... if the wait too much Gw2 will launch and after it new mmorpg will hit the market. For example Neverwinter : Neverwinter too will have action combat (and other things like usergenerated content). The uniqueness is right now if they hold on too much they will waste it.

Steam: Neph
I don't really think they have it out for each other. If Tera does well I could see NCSoft exhibit some sore feelings, but that would influence Aion more than GW2, which they just publish.
But never underestimate the scorn of the bruised executive ego. If someone at either of the companies is nursing a grudge, the media sites will eat up any snark they might send out.
And since I'm going to play both games, I want them to both do well - and get run well. I'm TIRED of incompetent developers and moran managers.
Avatars are people too
Personally, I thought Tera was pretty cool, at least combat and graphics-wise.
I mean no offense.
They all employ "animation locked" combat.
End of discussion.
Much potential, however.
Hey being 5th or 4th is completely unrelated to the financial success of a game
http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/06/01/rumor-tera-korean-servers-merging/
Despite more upbeat news of fresh content in the offing, the merges come amid reports of lower-than-expected financial performance according to publisher NHN Korea
http://www.mmoculture.com/2011/12/rumor-tera-korea-claims-another.html
http://www.mmoculture.com/2011/06/tera-korea-major-server-merge-coming.html
http://www.mmoculture.com/2011/08/tera-development-director-resigns.html
Don't have too high expectations because i feel you will kind of disappointed when you find out that Tera is indeed a PVE focused game (with pvp added as an extra)
and i was wondering when a gw2 fangirl will come ruin this
dude tera has the best combat system here and pvp start dealing with this
gw2 REMAINS a tab target lock game nuff said
tera combat is in another league
dude why bother?
the guy is a fangirl
ER look, I like Tera, but fact is there are more PVE servers than PVP, and I'd like to know how you can call Tera's PVP meaningful?
There are no real penalities for dying in PVP, you don't lose anything of value, nor does your opponent win anything of value.
Right now PVP in Tera is pretty much for fun and that's it, at least compared with titles that I felt really had meaningful PVP such as DAOC and EVE.

I liked TERA until I hit lvl22 and started trying to solo BAMs. Now I am in love with it. I've been waiting for GW2 for about 4 years now, but I'm so excited for the release of TERA, I'm not even sure if i'll spend more than 20 minutes with GW2 this weekend.

oO huh?
You forgot god of war wich is the current king of the hack n slash genre
The guy is a fangirl o.o? what?
