IMO GW2 is just over-reted and over-hyped. I bought pre-order, played beta and I didn't like it. It doesn't matter if it is revolutionary or not. At the end of the day is about whether ppl will play it or not. I know I don't like it and I regret spending 60 dollars or so on GW2.
When people say these types of things, I question the validity of your statements. If you are going to go out of you way and off-topic to saying "I didn't like it", at least give some justification in your post. Make your post matter, saying "I don't like it" doesn't give anything to discuss. I'm not sure why you posted on the Guild Wars 2 forums, went into a thread debating the application of revolutionary and other terms to GW2, and then proceeded to make a post that was off-topic and simple minded. If you are going to say something, at least try to appear intelligent.
Look closely at the poster.

I think you can draw your own conclusions from there...
OP did your keyboard glow with heroic music playing in the background when you wrote this?
lol thanks for that, I laughed. Almost exactly what I was thinking. Game isn't even out yet and it's the next coming of christ
I'd think it would be a bit hypocritical of someone to laugh at a trollish remark in the GW2 forums immediately after criticizing GW2 fans for trolling Tera forums. Yeah. Well I don't know why I'm telling you this, it's just hypothetical after all... just an interesting thought I chose to share.
Taking things too seriously, relax a bit. The post by OldMMOGamer sounds a bit more like a playful poke at the OP more than anything else.
I've heard countless times (and agree mostly) that GW2 has ruined other games for folks. If Anet can keep up the dynamic events (they have stated new events for all levels will be constantly put in the game) then I then I think the answer to the title of this post is yes.
I heard the same thing about SWTOR prior to launch. Just saying.
Maybe... but I've been here since SWTOR beta and I never saw that myself. Even if someone had said SWTOR ruined other games for them, it wasn't nearly on the same level. We even had someone call it the "GW2 effect". Just saying. Deddpool is right though, I think this massive phenomenon lends credence to GW2 being a massive success, and why shouldn't it be? ANet is a good company and they deserve the accolades.
People said that they couldn't play any other game after the first SWTOR BWE. It was because the story was so compelling and other games seemed bland in comparison.
However you have peaked my interest. What is this "Massive Phenomenon" you speak of?

I wasn't talking about OldMMOGamer's post, I was referring to helthros, who just before that post said that GW2 fans need to stop posting in Tera forums. What was his response? Going to the GW2 forums and using the "next coming of christ" line. Veiled trolling, but still trolling.

I'm referring to the "GW2 effect". I never noticed people saying they couldn't play other games after SWTOR, but I notice it everywhere with GW2, including the massive fanbase at Reddit and this very site whose GW2 to Anti-GW2 population ratio seemed to do an about face in a short time. It's massive as far as I can tell.

You are entirely too defensive and sensitive over this game. I strongly recommend relaxing a little and realizing that it's just a video game.
My 4 little words that you consider trolling was just playing on the poster I was responding to with the white glow and the heroic music. It was an addition to the joke, and if that's all it takes for you to feel like your game was trolled, then good luck to you sir.
evolutionary, yes. revolutionary, not necessarily. paradigm shift, definitely yes. but in the end who gives a shit? it's a fun game with lots of staying power. moving on...

I don't think I've ever heard a single GW2 fan say that the game was going to be the "second coming" or the "MMO messiah" or anything else like that. Many GW2 fans have said the game will be revolutionary, but that's a far cry from messianic.
However...I have heard SEVERAL anti-GW2 folks argue that the game will not be the second coming, when none of the fans ever said that in the first place. So yeah, it's a little irritating for us to see the whole "second coming" thing. That's why people get up in arms about it.

Whether or not you think something worthy of being called "the start of a paradigm shift" is also worthy of being worshipped is up to you. Just saying - an idea may inspire people to shift their paradigms without being necessarily good in your opinion. So even if someone were to demonstrate unequivocally that GW2 would shift paradigms, you could still decide the game was a steaming pile.
That said, the practical definition of paradigm shift, in my opinion, is a change in the way people go about solving problems. People tend to develop, and large organizations tend to be founded upon, patterns in the way they approach problem solving. They give these patterns reverential monikers like "The Jeffers Way" so that people trust the approach enough to get something done. This has its benefits. It's helpful to know that you can predict the output of parallel development groups with some degree of certainty, even when you don't coordinate with them directly. If everyone can simply 'go their own way', it makes planning large projects a nearly endless process.
Now and then an individual or group finds the space to re-engineer a set of accepted approaches from their constituent elements. It's difficult to find such space. Most people are worried about putting black numbers on the bottom of a balance sheet, and rightly so. Re-engineering the approach to MMO design circa 2007 involved authoring answers to questions like: "Wait, why is this extremely specific and tightly constrained form of group activity [Raiding [for gear]] the end-all?" and "What happened to large scale conflict in MMOs, when its potential was exposed so early in the evolution of the genre?" and "Why does my awesomely heroic character ALWAYS have to talk to a completely static NPC to find out what's worth doing in his or her world?"
OK, so I'm not sure how well I've supported this point tbh, and I'm not really saying anything new, but GW2 will herald a new age of game development (shift the current paradigm) if developers learn that searching for answers to fundamental gaming questions, rather than re-branding a successful featureset, is the only way to start a game development project.
Charr: Outta my way. Human: What's your problem? Charr: Your thin skin.
It is too early to tell if any of those things you mention is true.
What i think atm is that GW2 will end up by being different in some ways and, like you said, carry over many of the traditional aspects of the old mmo formula and bring some new aspects to the table.
What you should be asking is: will GW2 work the way many people is hoping for?
If GW2 delivers what is intended at the moment and follows through with the changes they made(i.e., dynamic events, no-trinity gameplay, level adjustment), I would definitely expect it to cause a paradigm shift. But only if they follow through. If they drop their initial ideas and cave in to pressure from the outside we'll just have another WoW-clone on our handes.
It's all fine now, but suppose one of those unique GW2 features doesn't quite work yet. There are problems with it. Bugs with it. Doesn't work as intended. Arena net can go ahead and work with them and fix them. Or, they can start outputting bandage solutions that make the game more and more like previous MMOs. If they do the latter, you can forget about a paradigm shift.
the no trinity idea seems like it will work out pretty good. im still on the fence about the dynamic events. mostly a zerg fest in the beta, hope they can figure out how to tune the difficulty correctly. those two ideas alone will most likely be incorporated into some future mmo's. ill go with evolutionary, and a chance of paradigm shift. the latter we wont know for some time though. depends on how successful it will be in the long run.

It can be as revolutionary as it wants at the end of the day you know the average mmorpg scrub gonna go back to Pandaria praise it and 2 years later creating threads how wow classic was the best and the mmorpg genre is dead.....
Seem to be a lot of Fanboying and Non-Fanboying hate going on in this thread. Just saying.
GW2 community need to calm down, and stop being so sensitive to Critism.
Think about it GW2 fans,,,,, if somebody is on the fence about getting a product, who would that person feel more comfortable reading the opinion of, a Rosegoogled Fanboy, or a Critic? My opinion it would be both.
Consumer can read both and balance the two sides out for a clear picture. But when too much Critism is toss under the bus, that becomes a major red flag that something is wrong and being covered up. We see this a lot for MMO. The cover ups by the community.
That gives people a bad impression of the product, once these realities kick in.
Right now, GW2 is simply overhyped. I believe we all can agree on this. Most of the hype has come from the community, but also the Developers and marketing had a lot to do with this massive hyperbole as well. So it goes both ways.
Read over my threads on GW2. I point out issues, but I still state that the game is a buy, but isn't living up to the hype. I am looking at things realistically.
Dynamic Events may be cool on paper, but after awhile the been there done that/ traditional grind feeling will kick in, and the fun and excitement will die down, and people will see the mechanics behind this feature for what it really is. This happen to each and every MMO that had a unique main feature. Reminds me greatly of Rift's early hype into the beta events.
GW2 forum here had a thread about Grinding being gone. I seen this claimed many time over on GW2Guru, so nobody can say this want said, since there was a super large thread over there on this. Well the reality of it is, the grind is the same as traditional MMO. You still grind quest as in event text goal, as well as mob grind, and other traditional leveling methods. Don't forget the gear. As if, people won't grind for gear.
And leveling is very important in this game. The main complaint I remember about GW1 other than the instances, was the small action bar. Anet looked into this concern in GW2 by adding a nice gimmick to get around that limited action bar, while also making it appear limited so the fans don't bash them for giving in to traditional MMO gamers complaints.
But problem here is, that the build deck system is very limited by levels. Levels unlock skill points as well as unlocking slots. So if you don't level, your action bar will be even more limited than GW1. This will make people want to level grind as fast as possible, which will be a grind, that a lot of people won't like after the new car smell wear off.
I made a thread on the Melee issues. People shrug this off as a lack of skill argument. Anet also admits to this issue, even if they try to word it in a way to keep the egocentric fans happy, and feeling like Anet isn't giving into QQers. Because we all have to admit, that the GW2 community has been very elitist when it comes to gameplay, examples shown on the YouTube comments of press beta before most people even got to play the game and experience it themselves, they already calling people noobs and lame. But as you can see, the combat isn't that hard, but is easily exploited for issues. Issues between range and Melee are there. Anet promised casting while moving, but left this out of Melee combat for some reason and uses animation locks instead. Circling around mobs and avoiding attacks. Way to exploited by ranged combat. And with server issues, they read dodges wrong, and can lead to being hit hard or even one spotted due to the server's mistake, is not fun, especially when playing a Melee fighter, which requires allies to come into danger zone and remain stationary to Rez that falling Melee player. Not fun. Especially in PvP.
I plan to play stress test today, so feel free to ask me to look into something for you, and I can see if I can do it and give my opinion on it. Otherwise, you can go through more and more back and forth flaming between Fanboys and Non-Fanboys.
Honestly, I hate hype, and rather we get down to the nitty gritty ..if you know what I mean
Originally posted by just1opinion Originally posted by Mahavishnu Very interesting thread. I think they just took typical complaints made by players as a starting point. I mean, the past 8 years there have been made always the same complaints again and again and again: -I do not want to do any "kill x of y"-quests anymore! -If I accomplish heroic deeds, I want to see an effect in the world I am playing in! -Raiding for items as THE no 1 endcontent sucks! -I hate grinding, when do they make an MMO without grinding? -I want to have fun with my friends, I do not want to be told, that I am useless, because my armor is too bad. I hate addons like gearscore and recount that always tell me, how bad I am. Are MMOs just about numbers? -Mobs are stupidly standing around waiting to be killed, I want a more dynamic world, where mobs are dangerous, wander around and destroy things. -I want failure! If we do not complete our quest, something very bad should happen! -I want to explore a fantasy-world and enjoy adventures and not to make the same stupid quests again and again. -PvE should encourage players to work together and not to seperate themselves from each other or even reward unsocial behaviour (kill-stealing, ninja-looting, etc.)! -The game should be about having fun from lvl 1 and not about reaching end-game as fast as possible and then getting epics. -This is derivated from pen and paper! Where are the traps and the riddles? -They should find a way to include roleplaying as a game-mechanic. -I want interesting quests, where I have to do things apart from fighting, where I can make decicions, I want branching! -I hate it, when I come back as a high-level and there are 20 wolves around me that I can all kill with one blow. -Combat is dull, although I have 40 abilities, I'm just standing around hitting the same 3 buttons over and over again. -This whole tanking-healing-spanking-thing is completely outdated and annoying. I do not want to play a healer, but waiting for one is awful. Is nobody out there who can invent something new? -PvP has to be balanced, please no honor system and no itemization! -Why does nobody make a 3-faction-PvP with castles, siege-weapons and all the cool stuff like in DAoC? I have read such sentences hundreds of times and I have even posted some of these hundreds of times. And there were always the same answers: -MMOs have always been like that and will always be. -This is impossible, this is too expensive, they cannot do such things in an MMO. -Casual noobs like you are the reason why MMOs are so bad today, shut up! ArenaNet just used their rational minds to make a very logical conclusion: If there are so many players, who complain about these things. Why don't we make exactly the game they want? How easy! And one can already see, how other companies are beginning to react.
This is a beautiful post. It made me smile. I feel very lucky to have GW2. I'm even excited for the stress test on Monday, just so I can be logged in again. And if me enjoying a game makes me a "fangirl" then so be it. Like I care what trolls say anyway. They're just a bunch of jealous tools.

Please, for the love of, can we do without such statements? It really doesn't show you from the good side at all. There's no need to insult people who play other games or try to get stupid and useless "insights" into the motivations of otheres.
MMORPG scrub? Wtf is that, even? Who do you think you are?
Guild wars 2 is evolutionary and somewhat of a paradigm shift.
Most things CANNOT be revolutionary before or at the time of it's release. For something to be revolutionary, it will have to spark a change and that change isn't apparent especially in MMO given their long development time. With that said, guild wars 2 is not revolutionary atm and ONLY time will tell if it is and by then none of us will probably care.
Based on the beta weekend gameplay it is a good solid traditional MMO, with some slightly evolved public quests ala WAR, rest seems fairly standard MMO design. Looks great and is looking good to be a really polished entry in the MMO market. Do not understand those hyping it as a the second coming. It will be popular because it is free, if there was a sub fee it would be judged just as harshly as TOR etc.

Philosophy of MMO Game Design
