In short, it will be like all other games. Large inital flux of players, gradual departure of most players, and if all things go well enough it will keep on living for a long time like TOR. I'm inclinded to think that TSW will go F2P because AoC did but time will tell.
I'd say it would be more sensible to compare it to AoC. TSW is going to have a similar horrible launch, i'd go as far as to say its in an even worse state than AoC was at this point and lacks some of the redeeming features of that game such as the combat.
I'm sure they'll turn it into a good game, eventually, but by then the stigma will be attached.
Are there any systems in place to keep people playing their main once they finish all of the story and are max level?
How are they handling these things in this game?
Has nothing to do with the comparison....seriously
This has to do with what you want...maybe? Not whether TWS ends up TOR
He's talking about whether or not this game will "stay alive." He's wondering if the game will, at some point, have an incredible drop of subscribers because there is nothing to keep them playing at endgame after they are done with their story.
So are there systems to help keep people playing and paying? Once they are done with the story, will it feel like they have finished the game?
Do you mean boring repetative end game raids where the objective is to spend 3 hours a night to hope you get lucky and win a roll against 24 others to win an item that increases your overall power by 0..4% or end game pvp where there are no real objectives and no discernable effect on the world?
If the answer is yes then I hope not. Another mouse in a wheel MMO is not what I want. I like what the game is and look forward to being engaged in a world and story that is actually interesting. And when there is nothing left to do I will move on.

What are you basing your prediction on? The stress test this past weekend?
probably mostly that its a story based game for the most part and story based isn't the best for longevity... just a guess
All MMORPG's are story based.
you know what I mean.. only SWTOR and now TSW has made their center focus the story.. most MMOs its not the main "feature" if you will or selling point of the game
I would rather have a game with quests that all have meaning and add to the telling of a grand and overwheling story then a game with quests that people can click through as they have no meaning.
Every MMO has quests, it just depends on if you want those quests to actually have meaning or just to serve as a way of gaining levels. Give me a system where you advance your character without noticing because you are engaged in the interesting storyline anyday....oh look here it is...

No, I just mean is there something there? Anything... I'm curious about what is actually there.
Is the OP referring to the lack of longevity related to being so heavily story focused? Even people who like the game will play through it and get bored?
When I want a single-player story, I'll play a single-player game. When I play an MMO, I want a massively multiplayer world.
The combat is arguably of comparably bad quality to SWToRs, the focus of the game is story i.e. SWToRs focus, there seems to be little group content i.e. it's mostly solo like SWToR.
Is this game just trying to fill the story-driven horror niche, or how does anybody expect this game to survive?
The only thing holding SWToR afloat is the Starwars IP. Nothing else.
WIll Lovecraft fans be the only ones keeping this game alive? Compared to Starwars fans they are few and far between.
I don't know. It just seems like with all of the great alternatives that it's going to make it very hard for people to justify paying a subscription fee.

i agree issue is this content takes longer to put out and people still go through it just as fast.. its really upto Funcom to keep up good content as well as adding in things inbetween to keep people playing.

I don't know if anyone but CB folks know the answer to that, and CB still has an NDA. From what I could tell of the world that was open during the BWE, nothing "end game" is in yet. But there are TONS of places Agartha can and could go, so the possibilities are endless for new content.

I'm simply being realitic. No game has kept most of the fans playing indefinately.
Tetris has had a "mass departure" since it came out, some still play it though. Hmm I wonder if the number of people that occasionally played it has exceeded the number that played it back when it came popular because there are so many more gamers these days. Hmmm that would be strange...

Good post. Some ( not majority) will still fly through it all. But those ARE NOT what this is based on. Those of you that want "the end game"....leave and don't come back. I want a story/ A story that takes time.
Most MMO players have no idea of what I speak though

I doubt they'll have such a horrible launch, the game felt more polished in the first beta than AoC did months after release.
The only way I see the launch being a failure is if they do like they did with AoC, that launched with big level gaps that had no quests or content to do and you had to grind until you got the next quest hub (which I doubt can even happen here since it's a leveless design), and Funcom has already said that they're focusing in getting the content fully ready for release, so we'll see.
It may or may not go F2P in the future, Funcom has shown with AoC and AO that they're not unwilling to turn a game around by changing it to F2P if it doesn't perform to their standards, and both games are still going strong after 11 years in the case of anarchy online.

This is the asinine I speak of....
How/where did you get that reply?
From your asinine post.
If you are looking to take your time and are more interested in stories than other elements in MMORPGs, single player games sound perfect. They fit that role extremely well. Especially RPGs like Dragon Age, Mass Effect, Baldurs Gate, etc.
I have no clue why you think you're in the majority though. I love a good story driven game, but I'm not really interested in paying a monthly fee to play them. Hopefully they have more stuff that people can dig their teeth into once people actually do get through the story.
I doubt they'll have such a horrible launch, the game felt more polished in the first beta than AoC did months after release.

After ao and Aoc I will stay away from any FunCom launch like plague, I am sure they botch it up somehow.
I will get into TSW this winter myself, FC actually makes pretty good games if you wait a while.
That the game is is somewhat better shape than AoC is expected though, it have the same engine and they should have been able to iron out some of the bugs by now.

They have! TSW runs smooth as silk compared to AoC at launch (altho I didn't actually had any performance issues with AoC at launch, only crashing issues after a patch 5 weeks into release that made me quit lol).
Try snatch up a key to get into coming weekend beta event and see for yourself.

How long have you been playing MMOs? They used to be made for more longevity. I played UO for a year, EQ for a year, AC for a year and a half, DAoC for two years. Not "indefinately" but still, lot longer than more recent MMOs.

This! I have played EverQuest 2 with my gf on and off for over 7 years and LOTRO on and off since release as well, wich is 5 years now and counting.
All MMO's that came after that have been total garbage with no lasting appeal! Except Fallen Earth, but that one went to the graveyard for me, after the devs sold their soul to Gamers First! /puke

@OP: Simply because Funcom actually tries something different with this game and not just launching another boring WoW clone!
Simple as that!
All the Life-time subscriptions have gone F2p with item shops, this game will be no different.
