How will this not end up as another SWToR?

It wont turn out like SWTOR because it doesnt have the massive crowd of people overhyping the game.  Its not going to get 1.5mil subs off the bat.

Its going to be niche and possibly grow or shrink after that depending on how complete the game is.

Also, the way im reading this game is that in SWTOR the class quest line was top notch and the countless side quests were boring.  It seems TSW has ONLY the class quest so to speak.  It seems like every quest has a piece in the same storyline.  This makes the limits on how many quest you can take out make a lot of sense.

Are there a lot of side tasks that have no purpose other than filler in TSW? If not i wont miss them.

OK. Fair enough. But when we express concern about the pathetic character creation options, don't expect anyone to be pacified by some vague comment about how it will be improved. How are they handling these things in this game?

Maybe it will be like GW2 where you don't need systems in place to keep playing, they will play just because it is fun.

actually EA is co-publishing this with Funcom

edit: probably the reason they seem to be rushing release. (maybe not rushing but taking it out of the oven before its fully cooked)

Is this game just trying to fill the story-driven horror niche, or how does anybody expect this game to survive?

The only thing holding SWToR afloat is the Starwars IP. Nothing else.

WIll Lovecraft fans be the only ones keeping this game alive? Compared to Starwars fans they are few and far between.

I don't know. It just seems like with all of the great alternatives that it's going to make it very hard for people to justify paying a subscription fee.

Several ways this is not SWTOR

1 Hype, they didnt spend 3 years hyping this as a wow killer

3 Wont have large numbers of asshats who want to be part of a "popular" mmo

    1) Yes, but it's FunCom

Some will play some won't just like every other MMO out...

I don't understand why people care so much what games others play why does it matter so much what someone else enjoy's?

Still over a million players after six months? People around here were predicting F2P after six months for tor.

Frankly, TSW would be lucky to hold that many subscribers.

    I know righttttt...

Guessing OP meant it as a dig at SWTOR though 8P

I'm sure they'll turn it into a good game, eventually, but by then the stigma will be attached.

You my good sir have no clue what your talking about..

It's no where near as bad as AOC at launch I'm sorry but no way....

    1. Very true and hype does affect perception.

    2. In parts, the game isn't very consistent in atmosphere. Sometimes it feels very alive, and other times it feels as if the air doesn't even move.

    3. True, but it will have a large number of asshat who think that it's a game just for "intelligent" people.

Well I turn off general chat, because the asshats are literally asking for help in every single quest that doesn't point the way for you on your map. More than one person are asking for help for every tier level of multiple 5+ tier quests. Plenty of people playing atm who I wished didn't exist in game ;)

This game is much better than SWTOR, played through that twice, but I am uncertain how the end game is and if playing through the game more than once is worthwhile.

The game is strange, and I really wouldn't like to even hazard a guess to it's future.

    - the lengthy cut-scenes.  Very SWTOR-ish, but "less good".  As funcom didn't have $4bn that's not suprising, but it is a bit of a gamble to push this into the player's face when it isn't as good as the obvious competitor.

    - puzzles.  There are 3 problems here - no replayability, the effects of a gamefaq article with all the solutions, and curiously "someone just getting stuck".  MMOs are very much based on progression, by design TSW has the possibility of stopping a player's progression o_O (this is compounded by the inability to run 2 quests at once - if you get stuck what are you supposed to do?)

    - combat.  It reminds me of SWTOR in a bad way.  A->B?  That requires fighting 8x4 mobs.  Returning B->A requires fighting the same 8x4 mobs.  This got old, fast.  Combined with location puzzles, and this is going to drive some people insane.  (get the wrong location - that's 8x4x2 mobs you just killed for nothing, and you'll have to repeat that finding the right place).

But, like SWTOR, it's got a definite niche.  My own concern is that people in that 'niche' might be put off by the incredibly repetitive combat.

It's got a chance like all new MMOs - the dev team clearly love the subject matter, and I can see some people loving the change of pace/setting.

    Community.

For the first time in many hours in the last MMOs i did team up with people, and when i did it wasn't the herpy derp crew. Capable people to figure stuff out on their own and mutual helped each other to get rid of the annoying zombies :)

Chat? I'd take people asking for riddle solutions over what i've expirienced in the last games.
No Barrens chat or "COMPARE AND ADVERTISE MMO X IN TSW CHAT", or constant discussion how awesome X in mmo was and how bad TSW is.

I didn't read even one sentence about these topics. PURE EPIC WIN. It was a real vanilla feel. Everyone was busy with the game not what the game isn't.
TSW already has a community in the offical forums too.

SWTOR BETA & release: Managd to find willing people to group twice, all participants have been semi brain afk, pulling everything, barelly hit any skill beyond the dafault attack and stopped every 2 minutes for something. And don't get me startet on the god awful first flashpoint expirience with those people.

CHAT: WOW is better, this is a copy bla bla bla.

TERA BETA & release: Groups? First group at lvl20 for the instance. Urgs
Chat: People realized BHS and Frogster did not moderate at all, let's jsut say i can't go deep into detail about animal abuse, phedo talk, necrophile and rape topics all over the chat constantly for days.
I was kinda relieved reading the paid spammers in the starting zone talking for 6 hours + about how great mmo x was. (Yes there have been people doing this. After trying out a different race / class the next day, same char, same talk.....ouch)

TSW can't end up as much as of a social failure as SWTOR, people who stick to TSW don't just do it because it's "STAR WARS" and "BIOWARE". No one trusts to Funcom, but most are willing to look past faults. When you got more than just blind faith into an empty shell of an LP & Name, it's bound to not crash that hard, if any.

Since this game is an niche it's really difficult to give an educated opinion about it's future.

I'm uncertain if the game will have those 500k subs they are going after. But if/when the game goes F2P it will definately have a nice playerbase just for the theme and the story. Then again if they make enough profit and really want to have a mature community then keeping the game as P2P+Clothing Store might last for longer than many think. People are still butthurt about AoC so the game might even grow after its' launch.

    Time will tell.

Hmm, if this game is really going to launch in June, no part of it should still be under NDA at this point, still seems like typical Funcom trying to cover up the flaw that will be there when it goes live.

Definitely waiting until launch to see the full monty before purchasing.

I think you have to look at Funcom's past games to see how it will probably turn out.  Everyone raved about age of conan until it got released....

Give it at least a couple of months before buying.

As an MMO it's seem that  "horror of survival" is really difficult for the genre :-)

    Diablow 3, it sucks ...

  • paul43paul43 Member UncommonPosts: 198

In most MMO's when you reach End game there's only one or two zones that you can quest in. In TSW there's 4-5 zones  you'll recive Exp in once your Rank 10, and since you can continue to develop your character past R10 by getting alternative configurations this will keep some players going. In Hardmode dungeons it's required that players change builds, so you need to grind more than your first R10 build.

There's no raids at launch if I understand it correctly, but at R10 you will be able to do all the low lvl dungeons in "Normal Mode" and then in "Hardmode" similar to how it works in Rift.

This is great for players who skip dungeons while leveling. For example. some of the best dungeons in AOC are Black Castle, Sanctum of burning souls and Amphitheater of Karutonia, but few players get to see these places as you level quickly past them and it takes forever to get a team for them.

I'm sure they'll patch in some new dungeons or raids in a month or two after launch, to keep the subs up, these days they lay long plans for what comes after launch.

My main concern is that there's very little gear to collect, you need different gear for different builds sure, but that you need in a traditional mmorpg too.

I'm a fan of Funcom and really enjoyed the beta.  But realistically, i'm just as concerned about the long term here.  Unlike both AO and AoC - which had many interesting "long-term" features - TSW seems more and more to be a "once through" game.  Yes, the story is much better than TOR and the world actually makes sense and the NPC's don't sound like their dialogue was written by a 3-year-old boy and voiced by his monotone senile grandpa.

All this is awesome... once.  I look forward to spending a month or two slowly going through the amazing storyline and puzzles and fighting my way as it comes.  But what then?   What is the proverbial endgame?   There are no raids.  There is no city building or land ownership.  Yes, there is PvP for those that do that, but for us PvE'ers, what is there?  A few 5-person instances?   I know it was only half an area in the first beta, but I was extremely disturbed by there not being any group content - no dungeons, no instances, nothing.

Regardless of whether one enjoyed the story in TOR or not, that story ran out pretty quickly.  And it's a long time to wait for more story / puzzle missions to be added.  A good MMO needs to have a plan for how the players remain engaged after they've consumed all the pre-written quest content.   Whether it's dynamic content (Rift) or PvE progression (EQ2, WoW, etc.) or character progression (LoTRO) or a combination of all those, there needs to be a plan.  At this point, I don't see what TSW's is.

I'm still excited about the game and looking forward to playing more.  Just not for a very long time.

I think the skill wheel is the only item that would keep people playing past two months.  I too am worried about longetivity with this game.  Will we all be back here in 4 months trashing it like SWTOR?  Because it is not a wow clone I don't think it will be trashed, I think many people will just stop playing.

I have also read a few posts that the devs will be changing up the world and the quests/puzzles to continue to make things interesting.  I do think the devs are aware that once the puzzles are solved once that will be it and that they will need to actively change things up quite frequently.

Honestly, I think longetivity is a legit question about all of the upcoming games for a PvE type person.

All I can say is I had an awesoem amount of fun testing this over the weekend a lot more fun than I had in the SWTOR beta and a lot roe fun that i have had in the GW2(jesus2) closed beta..

Thats what counts for me so ill be playing and i know thousands of others will be as well. If you dont like it fair enough... we all like different things.
