Nah, there was a poll from the staff that asked if we wanted it reported on. Which was fine, but the moment they started treating it like an MMO is where they crossed the line for the purposes of the site pretty much.

    Other than that, meh :)

Define how it is being treated as an MMO?

Getting a dedicated forum on a site for MMOs?

But people voted for it to be here so that would be us treating it like an MMO.

    He said:

    "

THE PROBLEM: Is that MMORPG.com are treating Diablo 3 as if it were an MMORPG, and as if it could have an effect on MMORPG's such as WoW's subscriber base.

The staff need to stop abusing their power to post articles on the site. That's the only point of this thread. PLEASE stop derailing it."

    "

In which he ignores what all others have said about games impacting other games regardless of genre and instead decides to keep commanding he's correct about the 'massive' definition furthering the 'derail' he mentioned.

We really need separate forums for every newly launched game. There can be the anti-<MMO> one and there can be the 'what general discussion should be' one. All the lamenting can happen together where each can find solace in like minded can't-move-on-ers leaving the rest of us to actually move forward and discuss meaningful and relevant topics.

It is an ACTION RPG! Similarly, you don't see FPS games being actively reported on as having "an impact" on WoW's bottom line. So why the hell should Diablo 3 impact anything MMO related? They're TWO seperate market types, and people aren't going to quit WoW to play Diablo 3 as their new "online attraction". Quite simply, since Diablo 3 was never made to be as in-depth as an MMO, it won't keep MOST people for more than a month actively unlike an MMO.

For the love of god MMORPG.com, it's like you literally have NOTHING to report on! We're even seeing more "paid" advertisements in the form of reviews now.

    Seriously?

Don't get my wording wrong, I'm not angry. I just like adding emphasis to things that require it :)! I'll be angry when another "MMORPG Staff" article compares Diablo 3 to another MMO though.

    -Cheers

I would have to disagree with some of the thoughts in your post. While I know well Diablo 3 is not an MMO, it IS having an impact on the MMO market. You say that people won't quit WoW to play Diablo 3 as their new "online attraction" and this is where you are wrong. I have numerous hardcore WoW friends that have indeed not logged into WoW since this game went live. Not at all. They are fast working on taking down this game with every class in every mode.

They may be two separate market types, but it's funny how much they are actually joined.

Just a quick bit of clarification on this whole MMORPG thing.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Massively_multiplayer_online_game

"is a multiplayer video game which is capable of supporting hundreds or thousands of players simultaneously. By necessity, they are played on the Internet, and usually feature at least one persistent world. "

"MMOGs can enable players to cooperate and compete with each other on a large scale, and sometimes to interact meaningfully with people around the world."

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Massively_multiplayer_online_role-playing_game

"Massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) is a genre of role-playing video games in which a very large number of players interact with one another within a virtual game world.

As in all RPGs, players assume the role of a character (often in a fantasy world) and take control over many of that character's actions. MMORPGs are distinguished from single-player or small multi-player RPGs by the number of players, and by the game's persistent world (usually hosted by the game's publisher), which continues to exist and evolve while the player is offline and away from the game."

Yeah I know, wiki is far from law but we need to establish a point of neutrality as a basis.

Now the key point of contention would be 'persistent world'.  From the definitino of MMORPG, D3 obviously falls short of a few points.  However, from the definition of MMOG, D3 indeed is that.   This puts us in a funny position where "MMORPG" is defined differently than a "MMOG" which happens to be a RPG.

At any rate, I'll ungraciously accept being right now ;) as I've shown that D3 very much so can be disputed as "MMO".

This has been covered on this forum multiple times. Locking the thread. At least check the forums before posting what might already be being discussed.
