I'll be honest, I've harrassed people and have said some horrible shit (regardless if they had ovaries are not, you're my bitch...)
I play call of duty and my job is to stick this shotgun in your arse and let it rip, beyblade style. I will follow you, especially if you take the bait, flank and murder you constantly (no camping, nothing wrong but i like ninjas over snipers) and treat you like pure shit because YOU ARE MY ENEMY!!!!!
what kind of shit is this...? this isn't FFXI, in which I would warp half way across the world on my PLD to tank a HNM thats useless to me because no one is answering you, and although I don't know you, I'll help because i'm a PALADIN.... but the point is...
We compete, Thats what gaming normally is... competition in some form or fashion.
I do not agree with bullying but i'm gonna talk MASSIVE shit and take you out the game and try to WIN.
Damnit I wanna win, and i'm sure as hell not gonna be "nice" to the bitch (male or female) sniping my dumb ass across the map.... fuck that.
The point i'm trying to make is, you can't get upset people talk shit.... I've played basketball, football, and golf through Middle school to college and they talk WAY worse shit on the field then behind my keyboard... I'm sorry but if you put your hands on the ball (or controller) you get knocked the fuck out... point blank Period.
The long and short of it is many "gamers" are isolated as "masters of their universe" in the gaming world despite the reality in real life.
This coupled with the anonymity of the net tends to bring out the worst in terms of individuals and their insecurity; where little losers can make noise without consequence.
We all know some of the things said to others online would result in the loss of teeth or worse in person (RL), yet they are safe online so it will continue so long as these lame personalities have access to the web.
Its not about believing its about us gamers not accepting that type of behaviour. I've heard many a comment about why Everquest had such a great community it was because if you acted like an idiot, douchebag the community did not accept it you were basically ostracised. When I was a Guld leader I would never accept that behaviour and I let that person know that so I had a friendly, fun and inclusive guild. Its not hard we the gamers have the power to stop idiots ruining others gametime.
First of all, there isn't enough group dependancy in games today for that to work. Secondly, there are a lot more people playing online games than in the time of EQ, so rude people can also find like minded folks to play with.
Well yeah. It is not about group dependancy only.
It is also about all automatic, person-less systems that let players avoid ostracism.
Like in old mmorpg's - if you were a real douche or rude person - then you would have problem to find people do anything with you. Not only grouping, but also many crafters would not craft an item for you, many ppl would not trade with you, people would not help you if they meet you 'in the wilds; when you were losing to a mob ,etc
Since nowadays you can trade on AH, find a group through automatic LFG tool and don't need any crafting stuff (and if you happen to need see AH or crafting yourself is painfully "easy") + rarely any dangerous situation in open world + can run easily from anything.
Then you just not need community to accept you.
That's why ostracizing is not working + why people act like idiots more frequent.
I think the question isn't whether women get it worse than men but rather why do people think they can behave this way in general in games? Why does online competitive gameplay have such a horrid culture behind it especially? Why support this form of unpleasantness since no one on the end of the stick of disrespect enjoys it?
I think that some sort of online sportsmanship would be a nice thing to have.
Tell me about it.
I played LoL for a year or two without declaring my gender or anything and the amount of BM is ridiculous. In HoN, it's even worse.
I wager that kind of people gets attracted to those kinds of games. I really don't know why.
SCII seems to have a much better culture. Maybe I'm just imagining it.

the main on this is simple, lol and mobas is just a click fest with people following scripts on what they should do during the game(i'm leaving the pros out) and when things go out of they way they start to curse be it they team mates or opponents.
in SC2 most people there play it like you train for a championship or something, also since you play in 1vs 1 its more difficult you heard the other say something, but even so in both I was BM a lot, one saying I was cheating in sc 2, in a moba people on my team crying i'm dieing too much (because most of time I was being ganked by 3 players and allies are just farming....),
one thing everyone should learn is in the internet, common sense, education, good manners are left out, no reason to get freaked out for random peeps annoying you, also in that line the dude was harassing the girl, well the dude win, in competitions, people will try to annoy you or piss you off so you can be easy to win or just gave up, if you can't ignore pricks like this its you who gonna lose, and she let him win
No doubt there will be a comment or two about that...
It's not just women. It's a general social problem that when you throw random people together, some of them are going to be seriously lacking in empathy. It's the reason many of us rarely go out and socialize with random strangers in the real world. I would argue that we encounter more antisocial people online because being online allows us to explore further beyond our comfort zone than we would in reality. We just don't normally think about how much we restrict our encounters with the rest of humanity.
Sure, some people feel more empowered to be abusive towards others because there's no risk of a fist flying back at them through a screen, but that's really just showing who they really would be if you encountered them in a dark alley.
Without people slagging me off, accuse me of cheating and raging at me in an fps I feel like I havn't done my job properly. There's always that guy you kill 30 times in a row who send 30 tells for each death, then when he gets you once by chance oh man that shit is golden. I wouldn't want to change a thing.
The people who get owned continually and are very, jovial and friendly about it, man they get by back up, I hate that. So that's how I behave when I die, very complimentary and pleassant, don't give people like me what they want
----- The person who is certain, and who claims divine warrant for his certainty, belongs now to the infancy of our species.
Let's see first off: Still do not believe 40% of gamers are women. Been gaming since video games where created and have yet to see anything close to those numbers.
No one really acts like that and the people that do are going to act like that no matter who you are.
They can always stop playing games online where "Your online line experience can change." They signed the EULA and accepted the terms. So they took the risk and have to live with it if they truly want to let worthless trash talk have any impact on them as people they might need to look at themselves.
Let's see first off: Still do not believe 40% of gamers are women. Been gaming since video games where created and have yet to see anything close to those numbers.
Most people do not really declare their gender. I don't know what you expect to "see".
Did you know I was female? Probably not. Probably didn't know in all those LoL and SC2 matches, either.
If I report someone. There's a REASON for the report. These companies that allow some of these comments to go unpunished are JUST as guilty as the people who stated the comments.
It's how I feel. My ability to report is the ONLY way I/the community can enforce the rules and weedout those who are @sshats.
And if someone said that to my daughter while she was playing... let's just say jail only looks SO bad when I can make a compelling case that my daughter felt genuinely threatened.
It's not just women. Everyone gets harassed at one time or another. I think there needs to be more tools in place to report offenders, and there should be a one time warning and then account ban after that. And if the dev doesn't do anything maybe they should be fined for allowing it to happen.
Some people are overly sensitive. Terms need to be and typically are defined in the Eula, but they need to be reinforced.
In SWG, I spurned this guys advances so he put several mining ore extractors in my town. They all bore messages expressing his displeasure, but I believe one of them said, 'Terranah is a f*cking c*nt'. Well I complained along with several other people in my town/guild, but the response was we had to let the money run out on the ore extractor and then they would decay and destroy themselves. Well...he must have put a lot of money on them because they were there for at least two months or something ridiculous. I don't even think he got banned, atleast not right away. It was awhile ago, but I think I saw him even a couple weeks after he was reported and maybe longer. In cases like that where the devs do not take action I think they become cosponsors of the harassment and should be fined as well.
in a moba people on my team crying i'm dieing too much (because most of time I was being ganked by 3 players and allies are just farming....),
(...)
If you are getting ganked by 3 players, you are not paying enough attention to the minimap, so, yes, they are right, it is your fault. However, that doesn't mean that it is only your fault.
I think a large part of the harrassment isnt because you are a woman, its just general internet trash talk. It happens all the time with guys cussing each other out. When the Douchebags find out you are a woman they just tailor the insults towards that, just as if they found you you were black, or gay, or chinese, or welsh, or whatever they would do the same, because they are Douchebags.
Then there are the people that just dont like being beaten by a girl, these people are even lamer than the ones above
I will say however, that the WORST trash talk i have EVER heard was between to women....man, that stuff was just vicious....and personal. Our guild leader had to expel both of them from the guild.

Ok, You assume alot.
I've never said I said the things suggested on the article, rape, death, etc... But I have cursed people out and teased them (with just about anything I could use that I could take back).
Maybe it's just me but I don't go out of my way to insult people I play against. Them sucking kinda speaks for itself. When I have an off day, I'm WELL aware I'm having a shit day and I don't take it personal.
How can I allow my daughter to participate in these with me though? Why would ANYONE allow their kids to be put into this? That's teaching them the wrong things from the get-go. I think that's what bothers me the most. My kid is sitting across the way playing sonic racing and doing her "I Won" dance everytime she takes first. I would NEVER consider letting her online with jerks out there screaming about raping and whatnot. It's one thing to say YOU SUCK, Learn to Play, N00b and something else to say I hope you get raped and your family gets murdered you worthless B*****.

You see?
I agree with your point, I would not want my child or anyone I care for berated... BUT why is your daughter (who is young I would assume) playing or is around when you're playing call of duty?
Yall seem to forget we're playing CALL OF DUTY..... pow pow shoot them dead? Zombies? what part of this is NOT violent and inappropriate for CHILDREN or those who are not RATED M!
Most of the games in the article have a mute function. I suggest people learn how to use it. Most of the time when playing FPS online I have a headset turned on sitting on my coffee table so that I don't have to go through and mute everyone.

Nah, she gets things restricted. For example, lately I've been playing Saints Row 3. The MOMENT my daughter comes around, the clothes get changed, the dildo-bat gets exchanged for another bat, and the game is ALWAYS muted.
I don't play CoD but I would LOVE to get more involved in Moba. Seems like a great type of game but it's one where the COMMUNITY discourages me from participation. Honestly, I watch VERY closely what my daughter plays but the mere fact that I'm RAISING her AS a gamer has me concerned with the issue. For the same reason, she reads comics and watches all the comic movies (with a hand over her eyes for the especially gross parts) but needs to be moderated.
