wow this thread blew up.. for people bashing the game what ever MMO have you played that offers the shear ammount of options as this one? And we don't even have 2 races unlocked. The world is amazing to look at and I find myself even when I could quick travel  I dont just to look around at things. The main story quests are fun and enhaging remind me a lot of GW1 where you band up with numerous npcs to take on instanced missions. The questing is what it is but I really can't see how people can sit their and say it's worse that a game like TERAs questing or really any currently released MMO for that matter. I already have 60+ hours between the two weekends and don't even have a character past level 10 just so much to enjoy and i don't wan't to rush things. Get a couple friends togrther and head into the mysts for some PVP was a ton of fun. I have yet to do WvWvW i'm saving that for launch.

Overall I really can't see unless you are straight burnt out on MMO's in general how you can't get some enjoyment either from the PVP side or PVE side of this game.

Once again I believe you and others are use to hand holding in games. I mean no disrespect when I say that, but in say WoW for example, you were given quests from givers, they were displayed on the right hand side of your screen, and then you would look at your map and complete them getting a reward. You would also complete an area relevent to your level and press on to the next. This progression is what I think you are thinking of when you suggested "no sense of a premise".  You may have to change up your way of thinking and smash in a side of the "box" you are use to and make up a new premise.

You are the only one that can trigger your imagination and ArenaNet has given the pallet to assist you.

ANet just made the box even smaller, taking out anything that could be construed as inconvenient.  Hand-holding - yeah, GW2's got it in spades.  It also has the "quest helper" crap on the right hand side of the screen as it displays info on the scripted events found in the game.

It also shows just about everything on the map: NPC locations, heart quests, skill challenges, teleporters, even "undiscovered" points of interest.  LOL

Speaking of teleporting, fast-travel is unbelievably easy and common.  Even mailboxes have been streamlined out of the world, as everyone simply sends and recieves mail from whereever they are.  Easy-mode gameplay, taken to the extreme.

i dont know where you get the idea that inconveniences someohow makes  games harder. Do you really consider a challenge going back to a mailbox or walking back  to the other side of the map in 1 hour?

That isn't the point. He is merely outlining the absurd thinking that if you don't like GW2, it is because you are used to hand holding. It is absurd because GW2 has tons of hand holding.

I hate the Quest grind, and the quests are boring and repetitive (Pick this item and put it there..........yawn)

The gameplay is very chaotic and consist in zerging mobs and Bosses, there is no tactics or teamwork involved.

I just looged out to take a break.

I ll try again later hoping that something changes my opinion.

Then make a team. What is so much different than this than any other game that you can make a group in?  The tactics are different, learn them and they can be just as fun as the the old fasion dps, tank, healer scenario. Attack, damage, CC, can all be just as fun if you and your group decide how to get it done. My son and I have a blast trying to pull agro off one another and heal or assist with damage.  If one of us goes down it is a challenge to keep each other alive just like other games without having to get a third person as a tank or healer.

When you log back in get in a group or find a partner, it is very fun. Don't look for DEs so much, go exploring and as you do you will wander into them and can help a bit...move on and just have fun!

I felt like I was part of a community  I never felt alone, and if you think there is no tactis or teamwork...your doing it wrong and probably aren't as effective as you think, you need to creat combo fields or use combo finishers, these are some new fundamentals for the game spamming attacks is just gonna make you feel under powered

his 3 hours comment was regarding the newly started BWE2

Point still stands. He played the new build for 3 hours, based judgement of the entire game on it. You cant get all of a classes skills in 3 hours that can alter gameplay in a drastic way...also, all elementalists are laughing at the idea that gameplay is boring with their vast skillsets that drastically change gameplay.

If he's bored with tab based combat mechanics, then this won't change it, but shooter based mechanics might.

It all depends on what people are bored with, I guess, after all GW2 isn't a cure-all against all MMO boredom, it just offers a different take on several things that'll appeal to a large group of MMO gamers, but also ofc not all.

Actually most class/weapon combos the '1' skill auto refreshes itself int he ability Q so its kinda like an auto attack

For a game that is supposed to incentivate exploring, it feels way too linear.

The quests hubs are still there, and you can't skip them or you won't be able to progress with your Main Storyline.

I just don't get the community on this site.. so much hate for different games, it's ridiculous. Even people on WoW forums like the game more than people do here (btw the OP is the only one hating the game). Go figure. I think that a a lot of you will never find a game to your liking. I find myself returning to this site less and less frequent, because I know I will always topics find mindless hate or extreme bias, that don't help anyone in any way.

I know for myself that I don't actually enjoy GW2 like I am going to when the game releases. Why? Because for me, a big part of the fun is the progression that doesn't get deleted after some time. And because of this, I try not to spoil the story and work I put into the game in the beta. So if I'd have to rate this game now, the score would be pretty low because I'm not having as much fun as I could have. IMO this is the same for a lot of other people as well, but they just don't realise it.

And of course there are the haters who just go into the game with predetermined mindset of "I'm going to hate this" and then after few hours (minutes?) of gameplay, they come here to spew misinformation and bias without investing any real time nor thought into the game itself.

Sometimes I just wish that ANet would release the game without telling us anything about it, so there wouldn't be any of this stupid hype and people would actually enjoy the game for what it is.

You are mistaken on that assumption about me, and who knows, maybe "others" as well. :)

For one thing, this game holds your hand even more so than World of Warcraft does in my opinion. After all, you can level up without doing quests in that game, too, and there is more to do than *merely combat*. As long as you're doing quests" or "events" (which are like quests, only modular) for progression, it doesn't really matter to me in what order they're being done or whether they're repeatable... That is, if they don't feature an exceptionally well-written and well-presented story, which is more than mere "quests". That aside, I'm more interested in other forms of gaming than merely "kill that guy and this many of that" - presented however.

Besides, some of my favorite MMOs like Fallen Earth or EVE do not really hold your hand in that regard at all.

In EVE Online the universe is your sandbox, so to speak, and though the gameworld seems spare, you have player impact that gives it character. You play for emergent gameplay and impact - both the giving and the taking. Admittedly it takes some time investment, but that investment pays off.

In Fallen Earth, you have to live off (and progress thanks to) the barren post-apocalypse - it's a world of scarcity and the scavenging, the trade play nicely into the whole vision of gameplay: You are what you manage to "build". The implementation is botched, but the basic idea is solid.

And even in games like SWTOR, you don't play a game for "quests" or "rewards". Those bear meaning only in some grand context the game provides you, a vision the game succeeds in communicating to you. It may be the conflict inherent in the game world itself, or even the story.

GW2, on the contrary, as of now feels just way too gamey to me. Everything feels to be artificially made for your gaming convenience and even when beautifully implemented in its details, in its vision it has no life to it. Not like Fallen Earth has, not like EVE has, not like Star Wars Galaxies had - and not even like WAR has. Even Order vs Destruction has some solid character to it where the main conflict defines the whole of the gameworld.

so swtor and TSW has auto attack as well gotcha.. when you activley have to "push" the button to set it off to attack it is no longer "auto-attack" sorry just because a skill has no CD doesn't make it an auto-attack game

Hmph. Having trouble deciding still on whether or not I should grab it. This thread doesn't help. I usually agree with DarkPony and Loke but they seem to have differing opinions. However, I have steered far away from all the innovation talk about this game that has been going on for ages so my experience may be completely different from most. Innovation has become another corporate buzz word, like synergy or bleeding edge, that is horribly abused.

With that said, I have been approaching games differently lately. Going into it with a completely different mindset of really following the lore and story-line and taking it at a much slower pace. I rarely touch PvP in most games I play so this is a non issue usually. In my off-time I have been playing EVE and the original Guild Wars. I paid no attention to the story the first time through and I would like to see how it plays out in 2. The main things bothering me with the original:

    • Lack of customization for character appearance. All the armors look the same. Hate feeling like another John Doe in a room asses to elbows full of em. (Not character creation, after)
    • HEAVILY instanced. This is a big one for me. Nothing about it gives me that massive feeling qualifying for the first M in MMORPG.
    • Social aspects seem lacking. (This is probably due to me playing it so many years later)
    • No jump. I was someone who laughed at people demanding this in FFXIV but find it distracting here for some reason.
    • Animations. (Not graphically since it's old, but the look and feel lack that 'oomph')
    • Typical MMORPG combat. (1,2,3)
    • Companions/Heroes. I think this removes a lot of the reasons to interact with others and makes the game seem more anti-social. (I'm aware it's a player thing but game mechanics can easily push in one direction or the other)
    • The pacing/length of Factions.
    Things I do enjoy/like/love/tolerate:
    • Unlocking all the skills. I don't like things handed to me so knowing I need to complete certain things in certain campaigns to get access to them is something I love.
    • The sheer amount of skills and combos. When I was young I would simply look up the best build/skills for my class and move on but I don't even google class descriptions anymore. I am enjoying experimenting with all of it.
    • The story. I have hopped around a bit on all three major campaigns and enjoying each one. Prophecies is my favorite so far. Nightfall coming in a close second.
    • The amount of content. Well aware that it is 3(?) expansions later.
    • Decent amount of base classes to choose from.
    • The pacing/length of Prophecies.
That was long winded but if someone could help me out here with some of these issues while trying to remain impartial, which I know isn't easy, I would really appreciate it. May also help those looking at the game to get a better understanding from people actually playing the game.

True dat. (but the last bit is debatable.)

(Some of the) defenders should stop assuming things about others in an attempt to blame those players themselves for not enjoying the game so much. It sounds like they are instructing people about how to eat an apple. ("No you shouldn't peel it first! You are trying to eat it as a banana! I can tell you only eat bananas and this is an apple!").

I sign what someone said earlier: not all games can be for everyone and next to that: no game is without flaws.

Wow! Finally a game which puts on the tables things like ( and they put them well ) : Dynamic Events, WwW, BattleGrounds, etc and you are still complaining? I am having a blast and I only played till lvl 9 on the PVE asspect! I am doing Battlegrounds only now and searching for the best build :)

Later, I will try the WwW and continue with my PVE a bit.

Anyway, yes game is not for everyone, but I am pretty sure it's well beyond 80% :) Someone said that he will continue to play D3 ? Over GW2? Are you .. serious? I mean, I like D3 but c'mon! I know every tree on act 1 ( inferno ) and every corner of the maps ( not the generated ones ), and you say GW2 is repetable and boring? BE serious ! :)

Are we playing the same game?  The main storyline is instanced and have nothing to do with "quest hubs" which don't exist they've been evolved into Dynamic Events, which also hold no bearing on your personal storyline,  If you mean that levels are needed for storlyine advancement, but there is more than one way to skin that cat.  and as far as exploring there is nothing linear about the whole game complete the exploration achievment in just lion arch and you will see how many cool places there are

ALSO  find a friend it makes this game 1000000% better

A few examples: AoC, Warhammer (they did have an auto-atk but was rare and useless). Swtor dont even have an auto-atk, also you have at least 3 or 4 bars full of skills so your are allways doing something. My complaing is that in gw2 you just press 1, and that is, just move around ur target while ur toon fight, and wait for CDs, is even worse if you are fighting with range weapons.

And the gameplay, is an auto-atk spam fest, even when u unlock all ur weapons skills, is still an auto-atk fest. And the problems in the WvW are still there, the map is just huge and is hard to get into a battle everyone is just too spread out, and when you finally find some action if you die you have to run back all the way back, again. GW fan will be inlove of this game, everyone else will get bored pretty fast and if they dont change anything the WvW system will be the biggest disappointment of the game, and a gamebreaker for all the pvpers waiting for this game.

This is correct there is auto-attack but you can turn it off I think but, someone can if they wanted can just go run to the store for a  something to drink and their character can still be there hitting the same mob over and over. That is not what I call exciting. I think the worst events were in the Norn area. I mean here we are in the middle of a war against the dragons and I have to go fetch some furs, gather rabbit food and do an excort quest. Tell me what does that have to do with the war against the dragons ? Nothing. All they did was take WoW fedex quests and try to make them more interactive. In the end it is still the same old same old questing system.

Overwolf working great in here too, thats another plus....I feel like a junkie with a needle in both arm, I get my GW2 fix and my MMORPG.com fix

    Very disappointed so far.

I am going to leave the starting zone and explore the world.

Although I have to say that the game itself doesn't encourage it to do so, at first glance it looks like another generic Quest Hub grind MMO.

If I have to read a Forum to know that I can safely skip the boring starting zone in order to have fun, then Anet is doing it it wrong.

Anyway, since I am not a GW2 hater (as you can see from my Sig) I ll give it another shot and play that way.

I wil  post a personal review at the end of this Beta hoping that something will change my perseption of this game.

There has to be some kind of "tutorial" if its just  few familiar style quests, the  higher level events looks great and there were even some at the end of the beginning zone that are really cool

Once again you can't make everyone happy. Someone else might say that all there is do in the Norn area is this War scenario, and you are complaining that there is other things to do. hmmm who should ArenaNet make happy. The people that want less to do or those who want more to do. So what if it is a quest that has nothing to do with the war just play the game and have fun instead of picking it apart.

Of course it's the same old questing system because that is what rpgs are all about. Questing and adventuring. Now it's presented in a much easier way to swallow, instead of "!" and "?" and you do not need to complete them and still get credit for what you have contributed.

Death is nothing to us, since when we are, Death has not come, and when death has come, we are not.

i assume you are still in the starter area then or just going after heart quests. Well considering there is no auto-attack not sure how you came ot that conclusion. Please tell me a themepark MMO, FPS, Any sort of action game that you dont constantly spam skills?

A few examples: AoC, Warhammer (they did have an auto-atk but was rare and useless). Swtor dont even have an auto-atk, also you have at least 3 or 4 bars full of skills so your are allways doing something. My complaing is that in gw2 you just press 1, and that is, just move around ur target while ur toon fight, and wait for CDs, is even worse if you are fighting with range weapons.

you obviously are still under level 7

I angered the clerk in a clothing shop today. She asked me what size I was and I said actual, because I am not to scale. I like vending machines 'cause snacks are better when they fall. If I buy a candy bar at a store, oftentimes, I will drop it... so that it achieves its maximum flavor potential. --Mitch Hedberg

For a game that is supposed to incentivate exploring, it feels way too linear.

The quests hubs are still there, and you can't skip them or you won't be able to progress with your Main Storyline.

I have already done all the Storyline my character can manage, since my character is way too low to complete the next step, I am now forced to do the side quests to achieve the level which will allows me to do so.

So, I have to do the side quest (Heart Quests) whether I like it or not.

Why do I need to group for anyway? I could easily level this game by myself (like any other MMO) if it wasn't for the fact that I am fed up of the quest grinding system which GW2 abuses as much as any other recent MMORPG.

Anyway as I said in my previous post, I ll try to play it in a different way, exploring and avoiding the Heart Quests as someone suggested.

I will let you know if the game become more interesting.

Of course, but isn't it weird that the part of the game which is supposed to "hook" the players is the most boring part of the game, so boring that many are already giving up on the game before they get to lvl 10?

If the game is about exploring, then make a tutorial area that reflects that kind of gameplay.

Why making a tutorial which plays completely different from the real game???

It doesn't make sense, unless the rest of the game is the same as the tutorial but a bit more difficult..............

Anyway I ll be able to tell you more, tomorrow.

I am willing to give it another go, hoping to overcome the feeling of extreme tediousness I am experiencing at the moment
