And I see you guys have indeed sucked me back into the debate, but it is pointless. GW2 fantatics will never admit their game is flawed, and Anet will not remove these elements because they want your $$$. Luckily GW2 is not the only game in town...
It is fairly apparent you haven't played the game, and that you have no idea what you are talking about.
1) Gear doesn't make much of a difference in the game, especially with the scaling in WvWvW. The largest issues that WvWvW will face are level 80's fighting low level players. They will most likely be significantly stronger due to no loss in "boost" from leveling up when you are at max level. Currently, the more you level up in WvWvW, the weaker you become ... as you are not upgrading your gear usually.
2) Most people, including yourself, don't understand what pay to win means. It is just a stupid term that people throw around when they have no clue what they are talking about. Paying to win isn't buying costmetics, a few gold to purchase new items (again, this game isn't gear dependent like most MMO's, it is skill based), or to boost your experience gains. It only effects the person buying it really. It isn't some epic weapon that is better than everything else in the game, that can only be bought in the cash shop.
3) Gems = Real money = In-Game Gold. Thus, everything will follow the in-game economy based on the supply and demand of crystals. Some people may buy some to sell, others will buy them with in-game gold and not spend the money. I don't see the issue. Games like EVE Online and even TERA have gone to a similar model of using in-game gold to purchase "real money" things/time.
If you really look at what it being offered in the in-game store, it is pretty apparent it is NOT pay to win. There is no epic armor/weapons. There is nothing that will make you super powerful over other people (as that isn't what GW was ever about). It is all costmetics and convenience items.
People need to re-evalute "pay to win" and stop exaggerating and creating huge hyperbole's on things they know nothing about.
I've given my opinion several time on this topic that yes, you can buy power in the GW2 cash shop. Is it game breaking? I don't think so at this point.
What I've gotten from this thread is that there is a divide within this community between those who can't wait to buy power and those who frown upon buying power. It reminds me of when you would see a 70/80 warlock in WoW in all greens that meleed mobs, or even worse a guy in current tier epics that pulled BC 3k dps.
Yeah I smased those guys, but I still didn't like it. I felt that those who payed for what I played for cheapend my accomplishment not to the point of "I quit!" but none the less it did make me fell like "This is bullshit."
There have been some here that said people should not care if someone bought what they played for, but a lot of people do. It's a game after all shouldn't it be fair?

"Loading screens" are not "instances". Your personal efforts to troll any game will not, in fact, impact the success or failure of said game.

No I have not played, but I do not need to, to know that there is a cash for gems for gold system.
Like I said I don't hink it's game breaking, but the cash shop does allow for buying of power. This is something that has never sat well with me. Hell I raised a stink about that first pet that could be bought in WoWs cash shop that was BoE. It's the principle for me.
I still entend on buyin at some point maybe 6 months from now or maybe next year, but I do not have to agree with this aspect of the game.

Well you can get everything on the Cash Shop with normal play, you can buy gems with gold. The boosters will sure give a little advantage for those that use them but it won't last, it will have zero effect on PVE or sPVP and in WvWvW even if someone is a bit higher level doesn't mean he will win, we've seen lower equiped/leveled people destroy higher levels/equiped ones so it won't be a problem in WvWvW either

Well you can get anything with normal play except for the cosmetic items (clothing and tonics) the rest is obtainable with normal gameplay.
Yep, I understand. It's just the part that you can get those things without normal game play that bothers me.
To the added part I missed. I know, I don't think any of it is game breaking.

I have moved my issues with GW2 to my signature because I got tired of posting it. WvWvW is clearly pay2win as the formula below shows (the mystic chests are simply annoying rather than pay2win). But to each his own, enjoy your game. I won't be playing though...
Then why spend time on GW2 forums?
It's called discussion and debate. GW2 is a hype-monster and a lot of threads are about it, so I sometimes join in.
I'm done pushing too hard on it though, as I don't really follow it much anymore once I decided I wouldn't be buying it. I used to be way more informed than most of its die-hard-fanatics back when I was more actively debating it, but once I figured out the nuances of their cash shop and how deeply ingrained they were making it, I completely lost interest. Their hypocrisy regarding the cash shop is offensive to me.
This is where you guys mess up real bad, becase most of the threads are negative ones, made by players like you.
So how can the hype be comming from supporters of GW2? Just look at the first 3 pages and you will see far more neg threads than pos, then you claim to be here because of all the hype.
Bizzare behavior, but transparent, and I am not allowed to call you a ..........

Another person that hasn't played the game, comparing it to WoW power/gear progression? Really now?
Technically, every game is Pay 2 Win. I have had roomates that sold EQ characters for 1000's of dollars back in the day. You can buy gold in basically every MMO to date with real money.
So now people are ripping a game with next to zero gear progression and taking the power out of the RMT's hands? This game is less "pay to win" than any pay to play game on the market. Think about it ...
This is removing the power the RMT companies have over the game, and is pushing onto "supply and demand" within the in-game market itself. While also providing ways for people to make more secure transactions with ArenaNet if they so desire ... which supports the game so we don't have to pay a subscription fee.
With the amount of games I have played, I am really interested to see how this is all going to work out. I feel like it is most definitely going to be to our advantage. I plan raking in all my crystals by making money on the broker in game ... so yea.

I edited my post. But no, you are whining about WoW "pay to win" through RMT. How is that not "pay to win"? It is. And has been going on for years. Check out my post again about how GW2 might change something and take the power away from the RMT companies out there.

I never said anything about pay to win... I think p2w is game breaking... I was simply giving an example of why I don't agree in principle. I get called a WoW kiddie (36 yrs) and a whinner?
Yes, by doing this NCsoft/Anet gets to keep all the money or atleast attempt to. All money aint good money though. A big company with a game like this would be better off letting that money pass.

I'm with you bcbully, you seem to have a rational view on the whole CS thing. Like me, you believe that you definitely can buy an advantage in the CS, but it's not really gamebreaking. I mean, the mere fact that you can buy gold means that anything on the AH can be bought with real money...that will obviously allow you to buy an advantage. But as so many have argued, the game itself has a lot of safeguards against P2W getting out of hand, so it probably won't be a big deal.
The one thing I don't get is why so many people here will defend the cash shop adamantly to the point of being irrational. It's not like you were "hating" or anything, you just gave your opinion, which I thought was perfectly rational, and you get people jumping all over you for it.
And Sebber...are you seriously arguing that buying gold for gems doesn't count because it's not technically part of the cash shop...really?

The question is - what can you do with the gold?
Another question if gold is that good, why would people trade it for gems?
If gems allow one to buy power, why will one convert them to gold?
People talk about xp boosts and karma boosts, but have people seen the guild boosts perks? Those thing are much more powerful.
The game has several currencies and a balance between them.
What people can do with real world money is buy time but in exchange (and that is a very important thing that most shops don't have), one can trade game time for cash shop goodies.

I honestly don't care whether or not you or anyone else considers the gem/gold trade to be techinically part of the "cash shop" or not. That doesn't matter. The point is that the gem/gold trade is in the game. Period. Quibbling over the technicalities of whether it is part of the cash shop or not is just that...quibbling.
I mean, what's the point? Even if you definitely prove that the gem/gold trade is not part of the cash shop, and therefore nothing in the cash shop gives you a major advantage, it doesn't matter. It's still in the game.

Define advantage as anything that makes your character more powerful in ANY aspect of the game.
With this definition, do you honestly believe that nothing in the auction house could ever give your character an advantage?

Look, it's pretty simple.
1. People will put many, many things including powerful crafted gear and crafting materials on the auction house and sell them for gold.
2. Several of these things will give an advantage to the player who buys them by making them more powerful.
3. You can buy gold with gems, and therefore you can buy anything ont he AH with real money.
4. Since there will be things on the AH that give you an advantage, you can buy an advantage with real money.
That simple.
And yes, I know that there are safeguards in the game like sPvP and supply in WvW. I know these will stop P2W stuff from becoming a huge problem.
But the fact remains that you where an advantage can be bought with gold (PvE, WvW to a lesser extent), it can be bought with real money.
Comments
Have you actually played this game during the BWEs, or are you basing your opinions on what you read in the forums?

Can you stop trolling please, it's getting pathetic... There is nothing in the cash shop that gives you power FFS. The gem<->gold trading is not even in the cash shop.
Take as you will.
btw out of 600 post you'll be hard pressed to find twenty about gw2.
Block the trolls, don't answer them, so we can remove the garbage from these forums
Yep, I understand. It's just the part that you can get those things without normal game play that bothers me.
To the added part I missed. I know, I don't think any of it is game breaking.
Answered above ^^

I plan raking in all my crystals by making money on the broker in game ... so yea.
I guess you just had a comment you wanted to post and chose to quote me...
Do you think this will stop RMT?
It's you.
"All money aint good money", okay? Please give me all your "bad" money, thank you.

Yes, he is saying there is something wrong with the cash shop. Can you name something that is in it that will give you an advantage?
Yes, you can buy anything in cash shop with gold, but there's nothing that will give you advantage and win.

You're missing my point...
Are you team Azeroth, team Tyria, or team Jacob?
Define advantage as anything that makes your character more powerful in ANY aspect of the game.
With this definition, do you honestly believe that nothing in the auction house could ever give your character an advantage?
Are you team Azeroth, team Tyria, or team Jacob?
Then people should stop saying the gem store is P2W. Period. The gem<->gold store is kinda pay to not have a point to play PvE.
