Guild wars 1 was a success. They arn't going to change the skill based pvp, get over it.
Will a lot of noobs join this game at launch because of the hype? Yes, will they quit in mass, probably.
Point is, you know what a game is, why buy it knowing it's something you don't like. If you don't like skill based pvp don't buy guild wars. Pretty darn simple.
I agree that PvP is good and is the greatest strength. Probably another on of it's greatest strengths is the variety of different things you can do right from level 1 (or 2).
Your argument boils down to: because people tend to suck more than they think, they will lose interest in GW2 because they will be trounced by the people with a higher level of skill.
This is something that happens in all PvP games ever made. Many of these games have lived on for years with healthy populations. Chess has poor players playing it right now all accross the world as well as excellent players. Your argument has no legs to stand on because there is so much real life evidence already out that shows PvP games are able to house players all the way from the bottom of the ladder to the top.
Anyway, what happened to your commitment to leaving MMORPG.com because all the GW2 fanboys were too much for you?
I think if people can just play a stupid video game for the fun of it without trying to make it important or validating, we wouldnt have all these problems like we see on the forums here all day.
I have a feeling it will also be its greatest weakness as well.
You see, everyone has been going around procliaming to the high heavens of how amazing GW2 is and how all other MMO's are faceroll EZmode games where all anyone needs is the best gear and they dont need skills.
So these same people talk about how GW2 will be the be-all, end-all of MMO greatness because it takes real skill........and if this is the case then this game will have serious issues, because the vast majority of these people don't have skills and are gonna go into GW2's PvP and get beat crushed by the best players and guilds. And they will no longer be having "fun" as so many of you claim GW2 is all about. The two great Pillars of GW2, Skills and fun. Neither of which Joe Average MMOer will be having because they wont be able to compete in PVP, and the PVE in GW2 is average at best so that wont help either.
So yes, while GW2 PVP will be its great strength, it will also be its greatest weakness.
This doesn't appear to be a problem in StarCraft or League of Legends... I'm not concerned... and I'm one of those noobs who'll get crushed by everybody. :P
Hilarous assumptions abound in this thread. I consider myself a PvPer , I've done it for the last ten plus years of gaming across various titles and platforms. I've never been the best at any of them, I have never planned on being the best at any of them. I've always been competitive ... but realisticly someone is always much better. Yet ... I've still continued pvping all this time.
I chalk this nonsense up to WoW raised PvPers. No ... I don't consider them real pvpers, yes they annoy me.
Well no one will know how good this games pvp is untill its tested for balance...and not the balance testing mouthbreather in house testers do...the kind of testing desperate no-lifers do in order to gain advantage...because all the true testing is done by these people who will find every advantage be it obvious or not.
Also, while the mechanics of pvp can be outstanding, classes that are not balanced can ruin any awesome mechanic.
Advantage might be that theres not a ton of skills like in most games, might be easier to balance.
I would say give it about a full month after release before the NL crowd picks through the parse data and determines what class is best ect...then see how arena net handles it.
PVP balance can wreck a game like this, and its really up to arena net to figure out the best way to approach balance issues, and to see if they heed to complainers looking for an advantage ect.
I was hearing balance issues in their infancy during the last beta, not with specific OP classes but people complaing about classes that felt underpowerd (engineer comes to mind)...yes i relize that can easily be fixed before launch.
A game like this that is built around pvp must balance classes right off the bat. And i hope they avoid balancing merry-go-round like with most games.

Wonder if anyone will catch the irony....
And most people here think that they were the Number one WoW pvper or GW pvper. (How in the name in math does that work out?)
These people who have unreal expectations will probably end up quiting. Not the ones that are coming in as newbies.
