Would YOU grind for cosmetic gear?

Thusfar I don't see where the grind would come into it.

I don't think GW2 is or will be 'grindy'.

So it's something of a non-question in my opinion.

Would I put in effort to get cosmetic gear - yes I would, but I suspect in this game it will be fun doing it....

    What do you guys think?

with or without stats youre always grinding gear...

the only execption with "without stats gear" is that you have the option to skip stuff YOU dont want

    HELL NO

While i love progressions and development and evolving worlds and that kind of stuff, i'm defenatly not chasing some carrot on a stick, cosmetic or stats.

I run the dungeon or quests or whatever a few times, had fun, it was nice, all good, it's over. Not fighting the last boss a million times for sword that deals 1 million dmg or a sword that shoots rainbows. Gear is a cherry on top when the rpogression is part of a player driven game.

I dont even like grinding for normal gear let alone cosmetic. Didn't do it in gw1, wouldn't do it here. I'd be happy with good pvp in my ugly gear.

Sometimes I get the feeling that you guys will say anything to justify your love for Gw2.  I mean come on... spending hours of your time for gear that just looks different so you can show off or whatever... really... all of you would do that?  I'm sure some will but I refuse to believe everyone above will.  I'm sure some of you are just doing that "this is part of the game I like, so I must like everything about it" thing.

Or, perhaps you don't understand that there reallly are a whole lot of people that enjoy MMORPGs for  reasons that are different from your own.

GW1 was quite grindy (although optional) with many titles requiring several hundred hours.

I just hope they remove as much as possible RNG from the grind - that is a cheap and frustrating way of increasing grind - I prefer when I know "I want this, I need to do this X times, need to do that and the other". Like GW1 tormented weapons.

    Currently playing: GW2

No wonder so many cash shops sell cosmetic items, something I never would consider purchasing unless it actually did give real benefits/advantage.

    image

I would say for some, myself included, it's an attempt to attain a "look".

There so much bad looking gear in these games and suddenly the devs create something halfway decent and those who can't stand the standard gear have something to strive for.

In my LOTRO example, I was riding a regular horse. I was a higher level elf "whatever" and here I'm riding a regular horse when there was a lothlorien horse that seemed much better for my character. Of course, regardless of my character atually hailing from lothlorien (as per my character creation) they did not recognize me as kin nor let me in until I did chores for them. And thereafter I had to do more chores in order to get the horse of my city.

It's like devs are saying "you can look crappy or you can spend time in our time sink and look a bit better."

Of course, I did get the "The Vain" title in Warhammer online so none of this is surprising.

In the end this is why cash shops do well. Players want to somehow find a way to make themselves appealing.

And that can go either way. My roommate has been playing a lot of skyrim and he settled on never using armor, only wearing starter rags but wearing a chef's hat he found. After a bit he also took off the starter rags and just fought in his underwear and chef's hat. A bit surreal but it was hysterical for him.

Some of us are just looking for our chef's hat.

Don't get me wrong, I'll admit being in awe at receiving my first "glowy" sword in DAOC, so much so I continued to use it even though I had swords with better stats (which I switched to when it really mattered, like in PVP)

But I always said that I'd put a diaper on my avatar if it gave the best stats.  image

I recall this one time in WOW where my Paladin got this really ugly looking pair of boots, very high, oversized and bright red.  But the stats on them were amazing, so much so that for like 15 levels I couldn't find a better pair so I wore those boots from like levels 30-45.

I'm not totally immune to wanting my avatar to look good, but as per the OP, I wouldn't grind for that look, I sort of expect it to come via  natural game progression.  I never ground for mounts in WOW, and I stopped playing GW1 when I had gotten through the main content and the end game was all about running dungeons to get black dye and better looking gear.

Speaking of gear, I'm not a huge fan of gear grinding, I prefer alternate systems of progression such as DAOC's realm point abilities or EVE's never ending skill tree.

One nice thing about TSW is it having over 500 skills tied to different weapons.  I'm probably the only faction rank level 5 character in the Savage coast because I'm already grinding up the skills and gear for 3 different weapons.  My avatar looks the same no matter what I equip, and that doesn't bother me.  Every know and then I see someone run by in a cool outfit and wonder where they got it from, the cash shop maybe, I dunno.

So my avatar in TSW is a 30 something female in a black and white pullover sweater and black pants, wearing glasses. I almost laugh when some of the NPC's call her "heroic", she has nothing heroic looking about her, well, except perhaps for the large pick axe or shotgun she might have drawn at the time.    She actually looks the part of a random "joesephine" pulled out of bed and thrust in a "world" she never knew existed, which is strangely enough the opening cinematic when I created her.

When I think back, I also recall being amazed that so many people rushed to pay Blizzard for the 25.00 pony.  I'm just an out of touch old curmudgeon when it comes to the world of MMO marketing and what people enjoy.

I did so in GW1 and I will certainly continue to do so in GW2.

It depends on the grind, but yes. I love cosmetic gear done right. Look at something like Lord of the Rings Online. It has a robust cosmetic gear system that works really well (besides dyes, they need love).

Right now I'm quite willing to put in the effort to get the combined Legendary Greatsword. I'm willing because it's an optional goal, something I feel like I want to get, and helps set a target for one path of progression. The beauty is with the optional aspect of it. I won't require the legendaries to be able to compete with everyone else, and having one won't thrust me into some uber gear-based superiority where I'd have to listen to people whining that I'm standing over their wasting corpses due to gear instead of ability. There will be no imbalance created. It'll act like a personal quest, something I choose to obtain. So yeah, I'd like to think I'll go ahead and put in the effort to achieve this.

    Absolutelty yes.

Stated gear progression is just illusionary profgression anyhow. All that people have ever been chasing in reality is the prestige, achievement, and change in content.

Anyone locked in to the idea that constantly higher stats = progression just haven't yet seen through the trick.

Certainly. Having done the original/early L2 gear grinds, most everything after that palls by comparison. I probably wouldn't do it for lower levels but max level items, sure. Another 'positive' is that along the way (while grinding) you are always going to get other stuff to sell or give away.  I like mindless at times, especially when I am chatting with friends via Vent or TS.

There is no "lower" level or "max" level on cosmetic items. Also, with the dynamic level adjustment, running a level 30 dungeon to get the pretty armor set, will be challenging even for a level 80, and equally rewarding since it is cosmetic.

I will amend my original post to say I wouldn't do it 'during' my lower levels (e.g. 1st run) as I wish to experience all or most of the content before the grind. Happy now?

I'll do the same and leave the grind for when I reach 80 :)

In gw1 ppl did for skins. Gw2 will be same. You will be able to get max dmg/protection gear easy. But skins will cost.

Yes for sure , I think you should have given an option in the vote for * maybe/depending on Gear though .

For me  its part of what I love about Mmo's is looking cool.  :)

  • BadSpockBadSpock Member UncommonPosts: 7,979

I'm sure I will grind for cosmetic gear and at some point purchase an outfit or two from the cash shop.

Why? I love looking like a bad ass in MMOs.

Even more so, I love looking unique and what I consider to be interesting.

I also feel it takes the preasure off of grinding if I'm doing it for me - instead of doing it for something/someone else like "gearing up" in order to do the content I want to do.

In GW2, I'll be able to do whatever content I want to do at any time, so the "grind" is really secondary to the content rather then the grind being the content.

    Win/Win.

    What do you guys think?

Well, if it's like the classic 'rare-to-drop' grind-fest of stat gear, the answer is no.   I won't do that in MMOs.   I did it once.   I won't do it again.

And, for me, it's not the grind per se.  It's you're out there helping everyone else because you're a team player and when it's time for them to help you, so many of them are just too busy or gave you the BS excuse of  "I was AFK, so sorry..." when there's a 15-minute idle log-out and you've been asking, periodically, for an hour...

If I could grind it solo, I'd do it.   But having just how badly most people suck and refuse to be 'equal partners' in the downsides areas of a game rubbed in your face every day when you're trying to complete a set is too much to bear.

  • gessekai332gessekai332 Member UncommonPosts: 861

the results of this poll have been very consistant so far. at 50 votes the distribution was 80 to 20% for people who would grind to people who wouldn't. its almost at 400 votes and the distribution is still about 80 to 20. If this is the case gw2 has pretty good staying power because A) it is really good at making unique and appealing gear designs (if anyone played GW1, you would know what I mean), B) it has MUCH more to offer than just pretty items at endgame (PvP, great story/lore, it's fun, dynamic content, dungeons, it's free, etc).

Most memorable games: AoC(Tryanny PvP), RIFT, GW, GW2, Ragnarok Online, Aion, FFXI, FFXIV, Secret World, League of Legends (Silver II rank)

I myself am so looking forward to spending hours in the explorable mode dungeons hunting for rare drops.

I absolutely loved that in Vanilla WoW in dungeons like BRD, LBRS, DM, and Scholo/Strath.

20-30 minute dungeons are BAD because you are "forced" to run them over and over and over because the expectation to run them over and over is built into the "time to completion" aspect of it.

Bring back the multi-hour crawls of Vanilla WoW days!

Like someone said earlier, for me, the less pressure there is to do something, the more likely I am to do it. Weird, right? I look forward to attempting to acquire a legendary weapon or two, but not because I have to (which I don't). Oh, and, I've never, ever bought anything from a cash shop, cosmetic or not.
