people are going to play MOP even if majority of this site will not. WOW has a totally different crowd then GW2 has . WOW is going to continue to keep its loyals as its mostly made up of kids now and parents playing with kids as you can see from the general chat on all servers and also the forums. Honestly though if you were smart you would not even want any of the current wow playerbase coming to play GW2 or you can kiss the community goodbye for respect and playing nice. Just log into wow on about any server and you will see what i mean , its like a bunch of puberty hitting boys are all fighting for that one girls attention they all like . I logged on PTS two nights ago after the new resil fix and ive never in my life had to put so many people on ignore in a video game just from general chat.

Its a master move from Blizzard, because we all know the release dates of the previous expansions where all much later. They all aimed for the christmass target (except the lich king which did not make the that target)

If I was Blizzard and all other subscription based and F2P mmo's out there, I'd be more worried about what GW2 would do to my subscriber base, let's be honest here for a second, very few people go back to archaic mmo's once they try GW2 and those that do very quickly start saying things like man I miss my dodge, I miss my weapon swap, they start finding it very annoying that they have to go back to a NPC to turn in a quest and get their reward, kill / loot stealing becomes so annoying they start asking themselves why they would want to keep a subscription to X game anymore, when GW2 does it so much better and it doesn't have a subscription. (take note I didn't say GW2 is perfect by any means here)

    to use a colloquial expression:

GW2 is like when they say, once you go black you'll never go back.

Sorry it's the only expression that comes to mind at the moment.

This would also explain why there is another MMO release a month after MoP goes live as well. Again, just a theory with little supporting facts and almost no chances of confirmation. xD

I think that's a very real possibility. Gaming companies do have varied relationships with each other... "I don't mess with you, you don't mess with me".

I don't see a lot of evidence to support this theory. Again, MoP releases a month after GW2 BUT the pre-release patch (5.0 or 5.0.4 whichever goes live) launches 1 month earlier.

This is the patch with the new talent system and the scenario that leads up to MoP (Theramore).

With no new content since November of 2011, people will be dying for this.

And it should go live the same time that GW2 launches.

No new content since November 2011.  That right there is the reason I have had enough of WoW.  No matter how good the game is, releasing NO content for 8 months is an absolute disgrace.

There is no excuse for taking so long to release content when people are subscribed to your product at $15 per month. People who enjoy playing the game will have paid $120 in subscription fees for zero content.  Nothing at all for $120.  That is the number one reason I hesitate in ever resubbing to WoW again.  I am hoping that game developers and producers take a long hard look at GW2 subscription model and it becomes the standard in future for MMO games. Not F2P with neccessary cash shops, Buy to play with 'cosmetic only' cash shops and expansions that are paid for is exactly how it should be.

MoP will not influence GW2 whatsoever, its the other way around Guild Wars 2 will influence WoW and other MMOs, hopefully for the better for MMO gamers.

Why do you blame Blizzard for staying subcribed if not happy with current content and not you inaility to take a break (or quit) till new expansion/big content patch? All I see is blame shifting.

    OP

Many will go back to WoW (or whatever their "main" MMO is) after about one month (bored, not liking the game, whatever the reason), especially with a new expansion, and stop playing GW2 or greatly reduce their play time (and come back for expansion if liking the game somewhat at least).  Sure GW2 lacks a subscription fee but it will face player attrition like all MMOs (less active players is less money for their cash shop), only question is how big the retention rate will be.

For me personally I think it's a bad idea. I think there are a lot of people (like myself) who are on the fence about wow. I really want to try gw2 and this gives me 1 month to figure out whether I will enjoy it or not, and if I do enjoy it and it has long-term potential I won't be buying wow. People who were going to buy wow anyway are still going to get it no matter when gw2 is released.

But if wow was to release their game a week before or after gw2 I would probably still buy it because I wouldn't want to be left behind at the start of the expansion.

And that's exactly what Blizzard is betting on, and some people indeed fall for it ;-)

And by releasing the Theramore pre-expansion patch a month before (right at GW2 release), they ensure people will keep their WoW account just to get the unique achievements/pets/whatever they will put in that pre-patch.

It's not going to influence me a bit since I quit playing WoW at the end of WOTLK and never looked back.  My brother on the other hand has Panda fever and getting him to play GW2 will pose a challenge.  Especially since he has a mac.

People accuse Blizzard of being stupid all the time, but I haven't seen any evidence of it. They haven't had any competition in a long time, but that doesn't mean they haven't been thinking about it.

    ** edit **

It won't affect me at all. I also stopped playing WoW after WotLK. I tried Cataclysm, but I could not get through the level 80-85 content.

I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.

I think people that prefer a WoW experience will try out the expansion [regardless of them liking GW2 or not] and people looking for a more structured experience than GW2 will have something to try.

It might cause a dip in GW2 population but thats hard to predict or even blame on the WoW expansion since a number of players are likely to take breaks from GW2 to begin with. Not like GW2 has a sub to track whose paying[and potentially playing] and whose not.

Also god forbid if the people that continue to play WoW are actually doing it for fun, naaa no way, it must be some sort of elaborate con from Blizzard, but if you play GW2 it must be for fun ofc!

I'm in the GW2 camp. I love it.

I use to love WoW, but it became old and boring to me. So I moved on.

For me this expansion means nothing; however, there are those that still love WoW that will be very happy with it.

I have no ill will toward the game or its players, but I have no plans to return.

It's like EQ1, one of my first loves, is still running. I'm not running back to it either.

Not sure what affect the 28th will have on me in GW2 but by the 5th of October I expect to see a lot of dissatisfied former WOW players running around sing the praises for the new King!!

WoW players will buy MoP anyway, be there a GW2 or not.

But what new and fresh things does pandaria have to offer that could make people return to WoW instead of Continue playing GW2?

Blizzard has all forgetten about their own commandments, the one that the longlevity of a game depends on its diversity. The new X-pac is just more of the same. Good for the people that still love the game, but not good enough to make many people return.

Time alone will tell for that particular issue, but for what its worth, my money is on WoW, simply because Blizzard do know their players, and yes, i do think it will be something that brings any lapsed players back for 'another go' ... they always do, how long they stay, is another issue of course. As to whether this will affect GW2.. how could it, there isnt a sub to cancel for the game, so its pretty much a none issue, people who are going to be playing it, have already bought it. And a month is certainly long enough for the players who have bought GW2 to decide if their going to be playing it long term or not, so any players that leave to play WoW, would probably have been leaving anyway.image

    Oh, this thread again.

http://neocron-game.com/ - now totally F2P no cash-shops or micro transactions at all.

I'll have been playing GW2 for a month and should have a good feel for the game by then. Have a annual pass for WoW so they have me till March so I'm fairly certain I'll be buying MoP when it comes out as well. Nice thing about GW2 is there isn't a sub fee so playing both won't be a kicker if I end up playing one more than the other. If end up not liking MoP after March I'll just drop my sub but I'm fairly certain one of those two or maybe both will get a good amount of play time.

Sounds like a win win for MMO gamers.
