Biggest MMO Failure to date?

TR is the biggest failure, no queston.

ToR is pretty high up there, however their biggest failure was relying way too heavily on Story and replayability being huge factors in their game. They wasted so much time and money on the story the rest of the game had to suffer.

Tabula Rasa shutting down was on NCsoft's part, they didn't want to deal with the game while Garriot was out in space on vacation so they supposedly forged a letter saying it was written by Garriot (he filed a lawsuit), the game was actually pretty fun.

    VG was for me...

Thought it was going to be everquest on steroids.. but it failed hard.

SWTOR is rough because of the money spent in developement. If it was SWG2 I would have played but scifi themepark, not for me.

    SWTOR will never close the doors until contract finishes  i think,  two reasons ;

1- They have a contract with lucas and cant close dorrs at their own will without paying to lucas

2- If they accept fail heads must roll , they ll keep swtor open until everyone get out safely with his/her check

Every time I see a game where the developers and publishers personally label their product as THE WOW KILLER I am typically looking to run the other way. It tells me right off the bat that the team didn’t develop a product with a soul all its own to market, rather they tried to best WOW with like yet prettied up mechanics and graphics. This never works. It’s like real life where if you focus too much on the idea of beating guy X rather than being the best YOU can be, then you lose the competition. It proved true in every example. Rift ironically felt soulless and generic in spite of all the polish and SWTOR err... might have made it as Warhammer 40K. *Chuckles.* ;)

Yes OP. It will be looked upon as the biggest failure in MMORPG history no matter what else happens now. They wanted to be the biggest subscription modeled game of all time. I do not take any pleasure in their failure. I am a raging a bit over EA Bioware showing such financial and design ineptitude because I really do fear that this hurts the chances of games that I want to play making it to market.

I don't mind beating the dead horse on this subject, SWTOR should of been f2p from the start. I agree with the OP. This is what happens when a game lives up to 15% of it's hype. I "might" of considered reinstalling it if F2P was full content, but even that isn't saying much.

Do you think it might become less of this with the release of their first x-pac, Storm Legion?

I knew SWTOR would fail by playing in beta.  It had all the hallmarks of why EQ2 failed.

    • Excessive Zoning & Traveling
    • Voiceovers (EQ2 had this also, but limited to a degree)
    • Advanced Classes (this limited replayability)
    • Group Content (inconvenient)
    • etc.

It is the biggest fail yet!

Before this one I thought Warhammer was the biggest fail. Funny thing is how both Jeff Hickman and Paul Barnett was involved in both games....

As a side note, funny how War looks so much like GW2 when looking at youtube vids.....;)

    :)

I was going to try and think of what I consider to be the worst mmo fail, but then I realized that by wasting my time with that, I was failing.

Sure you guys can argue that F2P is not a failure and that the game had "always been intended for F2P/Freemium" . Personally I think this view is bogus but whatever.

But the FACT remains that this game was THE WoW killer. Everyone from EA's CEO to BioWare's developers to SWTOR community managers said that this was the game that was going to face Blizzard's juggernaught, WoW. (You can look up articles posted during SWTOR's development that how this was the next big thing; I am not making this stuff up.)

Well, one game still requires you to buy the latest expansion at FULL PRICE. One game still requires you to buy the game to level to levelcap. One game still has a major expansion coming up. One game still requires a subscription fee. That game isn't SWTOR.

This has got to be the most monumental MMO failure - way beyond other "WoW killers" like AoC, War, etc. I mean, even WAR still has a subscription. How sad.

To be an MMO failure you have to be an MMO first. This game never was. I knew it was another garbage game looking to cash in on a popular name, with no more than a half a day in beta.

The next complete utter crap following this exact same model is The Elder Scrolls Online.

Waiting for:EQ-Next, ArcheAge (not so much anymore)
    Now Playing: N/A
    Worst MMO: FFXIV
    Favorite MMO: FFXI

I think our concept of success has changed over the years.  Though it has been said before, obviously, not every game needs to be a WoW success.  To be fair, SWTOR is terrible and is most definitely a failure. ;)

Is the biggest mmo failure to date?

    Not Even Close.

It is however the biggest trollbait in the history of mmo's.

  • AxiosImmortalAxiosImmortal Member UncommonPosts: 645

I wouldnt say the biggest failure, more like the BIGGEST DISAPPOINTMENT.

    Looking at: The Repopulation
    Preordering: None
    Playing: Random Games

No. The release of FFXIV was the biggest failure to date. They had to send out an apology letter. That's how bad that thing was.

The more I'm around the forums on this site, the more bitter I become.

    Good point.

I feel Earthrise should get an a mention as well.

I've never heard of Tabula Rasa. I've never played SWTOR, but I certainly heard about it... everybody heard about. What's Tabula Rasa compared to SWTOR? Wasn't this supposed to be "THE" game? I'm sure if somebody bothered to dig it up, SWTOR budget/cost would exceed TR budget ten fold. SWTOR is the biggest failure because of how well it's known, how much was expected of it, how much was spent on it, and how VERY little it accomplished.

FFXIV  by far the biggest MMO failure to date with  a reception so bad that they did not bother charging fans that bought the game a sub for the first 3/4 of the year after its launch and even then at a discount i believe.  Top that off with the fact that they openly admitted the game sucked and said sorry to their fanbase for completely failing.  The fail was so bad that the suits couldn't even try to cover it up they just came up with it and went full damage control.

No CRS/Playnet's WWIIOL has been killing themselves for YEARS now.

and now they are begging for help to expand their game and after that "kickstarter" failed they are now begging for adverstising money to get in mmorpg's newsletter.

    Don't ever play wwiiol ever.

Save your $17.99/month sub costs for something else.

I won't know until I get around to playing it... I may not feel their world has enough life right now to warrant dedicating myself to playing it but Trion hasn't burned bridges with its player community in the same way so many other game companies have. It may not be the game for me "yet" but I still respect it and I am willing to give them the chance still.

Tabula Rasa was run by Richard Garriot, who used to be an employee of Electronic Arts, who long ago sold his company for millions, called "Origin Systems, Inc", who used to run the Ultima franchise, who used to go under the name "Lord British", who produced an Ultima series so popular it had 8 expansions (U9 was the last).

I think most people just didn't know about Tabula Rasa when it came out to play it .. honestly we / they were too wrapped up in WoW.

    A Shame.

Now EA took over, Richard Garriott quit EA and took the name "Lord British" with him.  The Ultima franchise (now owned by EA) will now use Lady British .. how freakin lame .. lulz Lady British.. really?

All those millions of dollars tsk tsk. The sad thing is they had a gem right under their nose.   All Mythic had to do was to give DAoC some love through a remake and they would be swimming in money.  Do they ever listen? Nope.
