There is quite a list of ACTUAL failed MMOs. Being MMOs that don't exist anymore; because, they failed. But I can tell you the names of a few that are on the right track. *cough* TOR *cough*
It's Star Wars Galaxies all over again; but, without the glamorous begining. /sadpanda
To be an MMO failure you have to be an MMO first. This game never was. I knew it was another garbage game looking to cash in on a popular name, with no more than a half a day in beta.
The next complete utter crap following this exact same model is The Elder Scrolls Online.

I'm sure if somebody bothered to dig it up, SWTOR budget/cost would exceed TR budget ten fold. SWTOR is the biggest failure because of how well it's known, how much was expected of it, how much was spent on it, and how VERY little it accomplished.

The game has EVERYTHING (money, big studio, famous developers & the IP) to its advantage for success yet it...
It's not the biggest failure but definitely the biggest letdown in MMO history as far as I could remember. I was in beta and had so much hope for it that I continued my sub for 2 months. But it really is a singleplayer game at core no matter how they spin it. So they should stop putting the blame on P2P not a viable business model anymore.
I still have nightmares from all the fanboi's coming on here flaming everyone that said SWTOR sucked. Hopefully they learned a hard lesson but I doubt it.
Other news, considering the money and name they had behind the game SWTOR is way up there on the failure list. I'd say at least top 5 and that's being kind, unfortunatly for us there's alot of competition for biggest fail ever.

Why bother with reason or logic when it would impeach or refute your point? You just dismiss and ignore it.

Hopefully they get F2P right this time.
doubtful, changing the subscription model isnt going to improve the game. Concentrating on storyline wasnt a bad thing, but it meant that other parts of the game appeared neglected, or 'tacked on' the space part of the game, the single player tunnel shooter that is, was just too limited and including it in the game didnt actually add anything, not to mention the crafting is a huge time and money sink, if they were going to copy WoW then the crafting from WoW would have been a definite improvement, instead, having to send out companions for increasingly longer time periods - 45 minutes.. was just mind bogglingly daft. Then theres PvP, in SW;TOR its, to be honest, totally boring, fun the first few times and then it goes downhill fast, i really don't know how fixing that would work either, though more variation would definitely help, as would being able to choose which ones you wanted to play, though i'd vote huttball out immediately.. decode it delete it.. just get rid of it.. if they had copied TF2 it would have been an improvement.. but, mainly i'd say the biggest problem seems to be the hero engine itself, its probably suited to Multiplayer Online rather than MMO, so many instances and zones, you seem to see a loading screen every 5 minutes, so much so that travelling from A to B is more of a time sink than it should be. Making the game more 'accessable' imo, won't be achieved from making the game F2P, it may even hasten its demise.
Originally posted by Enigmatus It might be the second largest at the moment, but at the rate it's losing subscribers, it won't be able to retain this position for long.
The last subscriber number was reported in May. How do you know the game is still losing subscribers and did not stabilize since then?
I guess I'm alone in thinking websites like this one have failed the mmorpg genre the most.
i really thing the whole mmorpg.com forum should be closed . instead of constructive discussions .we are indulging ourselves in nonsense talks . people need to understand that not everyone is like them . one person garbage may be other person gold . get on with your lives . play games entertain yourself .

If you think this forum is bad and shold be closed then I have honest information for you.
By being here, reading, posting on this forum, increasing 'page view' and so on - you actually SUPPORT forum you don't like.
I don't want to imply anthing as I don't have anything against you, just wanted to make that clear to you.
It is like f2p game. Some people think that if they play totally for free not spending a single cent then they are 'using electricity and bandwidch' and thus not profiting developer or even 'hurting game'.
While obviously game corporation directly profit of paying players and they are more important, totally free players also benefit game corporation because they make servers more 'alive' and are providing 'poorer' masses which paying users especially 'whales' can compare themself to.
So if you're really despise mmorpg.com forum then best idea is to stop entering this website, taking friends with you and supporting other better forum or even creating one.
By being here you just increase advertisement revenue and make this fourm bigger and more important.
I'd say Tabula Rasa over SWTOR but if you just wanted to feel the glory on your sparkle pony, don't let me ruin your parade.
I agree after UO tabula was supposed to be the next big MMO for Richard but was a complete disaster. At least swtor is playable and has a decent story aspect.

This has got to be the biggest MMO failure to date. Big and I mean BIG budget studios (BioWare, and then all of Mythic), many millions of dollars, reknown voice actors and actors, world-famous interllectual property (Star Wars - who doesn't know it???), one of the titans of video games, EA and many years of anticipated development - all of this to crash and burn in less than a year?
Sure you guys can argue that F2P is not a failure and that the game had "always been intended for F2P/Freemium" . Personally I think this view is bogus but whatever.
But the FACT remains that this game was THE WoW killer. Everyone from EA's CEO to BioWare's developers to SWTOR community managers said that this was the game that was going to face Blizzard's juggernaught, WoW. (You can look up articles posted during SWTOR's development that how this was the next big thing; I am not making this stuff up.)
Well, one game still requires you to buy the latest expansion at FULL PRICE. One game still requires you to buy the game to level to levelcap. One game still has a major expansion coming up. One game still requires a subscription fee. That game isn't SWTOR.
This has got to be the most monumental MMO failure - way beyond other "WoW killers" like AoC, War, etc. I mean, even WAR still has a subscription. How sad.
So you are saying that WAR is more successful than SWTOR because it is still P2P? even though SWTOR still hs population somewhere around 500K players and more servers than WAR can ever dream for.
Is that your logic? F2P = failure? and not take into account over all population and active servers?

Did those games have a 200+ million dollar budget?
Are all of those game a big name attacked to them like Bioware (granted garriot and EQ name tag)
Did those games have tv commercial?
The point is SWTOR IS the biggest fail of all time due to It's EA and a used to be great gaming studio ala Failware I mean Bioware and they forked out 200+ million dollars for a game that could have cost 20 million.
And the game hasent been out for more than 4 months before server merges then now we have F2P announcement.
Asheron's Call 2 is my personal favorite for biggest mmo failure to date. Such a let down considering its predecessor.
Biggest? Not quite. But its certainly in the top three. It takes a lot to so totally mess up a game, and ruin community good will, that it has to be shut down. But Mickysoft and Turbine managed it. If they had taken the elements that made Asherons Call a good game, up dated the engine and stream lined the combat system (and removed the item loss on death), it would have been much better received.
But I would agree that ToR is likely one of the most expensive failures that we've seen in quite a long time.
As for Tabula Rasa, I quite enjoyed elements of the of the game. Base defense/offense against the Bane was one of my favorite parts. I hated to see it closed down, and to this day, I suspect it was more politics, than business that drove the decision on NCsofts part.

SWG only had the plug pulled as LA thought they had a sure thing with SWTOR.
SWG was a disaster in 2005, but in the last few years of its life it was far from a disaster. SOE put tonnes of effort into it, from what they were allowed to do with LA "pulling the strings", and it ended up being pretty awesome, but also at least SOE and LA put some effort into the game from the get go, even if it did not work out. There were always updates coming in pretty fast from the moment it was laumched to the day it closed.
SWTOR is just more of polished NGE with all the best bits of SWG removed, leaving a shell of the game. Ever do the Legacy quest series in SWG. The one long boring quest series as all professions do it? SWTOR is just that, but a lot better, but could have been better again still. There is more reason to play the game after level 90 in SWG than there is in SWTOR once you hit 50. There was more ways to level up in SWG though, you could explore the worlds yurself and take on missions by random NPCs, and / or do the mission terminals which gave you 1 level per day.

Better to think they do it intentionally...
Do the math and explain how EA has made back their initial investment (200-500 million dollars) + running costs, then we stop calling it a failure.
And while you're at it, explain how a game that was destined to kill WoW, but has now lost at least 60% of its playerbase and heading F2P... all that in less than a year, is not to be considered a failure?
Fanboism sure is a weird thing, it's like a virus that switches off that part of human brain where logical thinking resides.

So..."the biggest failure MMO to date" is also second largest MMO on the market. I bet many devs would wish to "fail" as much as SWTOR did.

It is.
Game failed and it's sad because I was such a big starwars fan, even after manikin and this wierd ongoing 3d starwars cartoon.
Its the biggest failure till now.
No game wasted so much money and failed so hard so fast. From 2,5m to 200-250k in just 6-7 months.
300m$ budget (to launch, total costs might be up to 500+m$)
Company itself acknowledging its failure.
Company itself started to distance itself from it.
...
Yah, it wont close, lucky for SWTOR that some other EA games are doing well so they can recuperate SWTORs losses.
It might be the second largest at the moment, but at the rate it's losing subscribers, it won't be able to retain this position for long.
The last subscriber number was reported in May. How do you know the game is still losing subscribers and did not stabilize since then?
I don't. I'm just basing my observation on the trend that we have seen for SWTOR for the past 7 months.
How do you make a correlation of past data with actual data when you do not know actual data?
Or did you mean you just base your opinion on trend of 3 months after launch despite having very little resemblance to current state?
