I'm just mad game is already $25 bucks on amazon...

It's not hard to work out:

Swtor: wow evolved, but in star wars universe. Reality, crude and dated implementation of a copy of wow. Seems a fair stab that it may work, but in reality traditional style themepark has aged badly.

TSW ; a more adult flavour, but like swtor, hit end game and your back to a tired model. The key is the general population is catching up and realising through games like swtor that mmorg's are just a game, and all games need to evolve in a genuine and knowing manner. Bottom line, less TSW sales as people have learned from swtor.

    rpg/mmorg history: Dun Darach>Bloodwych>Bards Tale 1-3>Eye of the beholder > Might and Magic 2,3,5 > FFVII> Baldur's Gate 1, 2 > Planescape Torment >Morrowind > WOW > oblivion > LOTR > Guild Wars (1900hrs elementalist) Vanguard. > GW2(1000 elementalist), Wildstar

Now playing GW2, AOW 3, ESO, LOTR, Elite D

I said it once and Ill say it again. TSW had/has to be f2p or b2p.

Has anyone seen a TSW commercial. They could still sell a huge amount of copies if they made a US National commercial. Only die hard mmo players go from site to site to see whats comming out.

This is right !!!!!............I talked to several mmo players at work. Each one of them knew about SWTOR and GW2.....No one knew anything about TSW.

In fact talk to anyone outside of our little click here on mmorpg.com.  Here is what they know :

World of Warcraft, and StarWars. Some know the name EverQuest but they don't know what it's about, they just know the name.

Me :             Hi all my friends. Do you know anything about Age of Conan, The Secret World or even Funcom ?

Friends :    What the hell is that ?

Pre-launch hype is what determines your sales during the first week, and launch hype determines first month sales. Gamer reception determines your success after the free month.

Funcom, Age of conan, p2p+cash shop, lifetime subscriptions, at first beta registration forcing you to give funcom access to all your facebook info and releasing the game during summer. They got mediocre reviews

Bioware made a followup to kotor in the star wars universe and released the game just before christmas. They also got great reviews.

EA spend an insane amount of money marketing this game.

An amount that exceeds the entire development budget of TSW.

    So there is your answer.

Just think about the math.  Tor had 210 servers at release and TSW had 8 or not even 4% of the total servers.  Just looking at the total serevrs one can see TSW did not sell anyonewhere near as many copies as ToR.

But what does it matter.  if you enjoy a game and it keeps putting out content isn'tt hat enough.  Mere popularity does not make something good.  I would much rather go to a real restraunt than McDonalds despite McD's popularity.

The Secret World's servers are capable of holding close to a 100,000 players, whereas The Old Republic's are only capable of holding around 3,000 - 5,000.

    So your point is invalid.

There is nothing to be surprised, there are many reasons for this difference:

    - Star Wars IP

    - Ton of Advertising

    - Funcom reputation for crap releases

    - TSW is not much better than SWTOR

What I am surprised about though is the fact that TSW sold less than AoC (800k) on release, where did you get those numbers OP?

    TSW will fail as AOC...

Poor company, poor dev, poor update and poor suport.

500k at launch = EPIC FAIL and one month later, cut this number by an half...pathetic..always the same sh***t

Go read the TSW forums now, trolling is started... "this game sux'' - ''Grind fest !!! '' - '' WoW is better you n00b ! '' - ''your mom! '' - 15$ by month for this sh**t !!! WTF '' etc...

    Free to play is coming...SOON

The Secret World is the best MMO released this year..and It will be for a long time..

It will grow ..in time..When FUNCOM's poor reputation finally but slowly washes away..

    My reflections..With the TSW

They have ultra fast support in TSW..

They are a developer that dares to take risks, seen in all their games, but with TSW it's very much notable

They are a company that have eyes for detail , and creates great Immersion, with both sound and graphics..

Sometimes, they promise to much ..and just like any other developer , they are forced by suits to release their products early

Trolls  like you however , never seems to go away..even if they do not play or even would consider playing this game..They see it as their holy crusade to continue to bash on a company based on something that upset them 4-5 years ago..

    Its all about the hype.

Funcom failed to generate enough hype about TSW to enable it to sell BIG.

SWTOR generated huge amounts of hype, so sold lots of boxes..... but was a crap game so lost the subs almost immediately.

I suspect the people that have bought TSW will stick with it for quite a while, as they are most likely the people that have been following it for a long time and know all about its good and bad points....

I mean.. You did know Star Wars spawned things like:

    http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Q4BpsZn2sm4/TYCdiLkA1pI/AAAAAAAAmnM/MLT7cBmrbEA/s1600/Star%2BWars%2BMerchandise13.jpg

    &

    http://cdn.smosh.com/sites/default/files/bloguploads/starwars-merch-1.jpg

And they've sold at least 500k of those things alone. EA knew what they were doing when they decided to make the disk for SWTOR as expensive as it was. They figured a few million idiots would buy it without thinking and a few hundred thousand might stick around paying until it goes F2P.

    a yo ho ho

    Patience.

GW2 deserves all the attention it gets, but two things are inevitable:

    1) Other games launching mere months before GW2 will suffer piss-poor sales. People tend to play MMOs with their friends, and I don't know any group of friends playing MMOs who isn't waiting for GW2.

    2) A few months after launch A LOT of players will leave GW2. Not because GW2 isn't good, mind you, but because the mega-hype draws in players who doesn't like what they get from GW2. Inevitably. The hype goes away after a while, and they will be looking for other games.

Funcom should be working hard on their "second launch" expansion pack, and have patience. TSW is a good enough game to catch a lot of players who are tired of elves jumping about :)

I think lot more people are tired of hamster wheel grind for purples rather than elves jumping around. And once you hit end game in TSW you realise you would be running the same treadmill you have been running since days of WOW.

TSW isn't all that different as you guys make it out to be and it surely needs a lot more than just 'removal of orcs and leves' to keep a respectable player base.

That was the big issue for me. I enjoyed tsw but all my friends have already preordered gw2.

    Hype & marketing do wonder's for sale's.

EaWare with SWTOR did mass commerical marketing. Hence got a proverbial S-ton of sales.

Anet with GW2 release a little information here and there, let people at convention's play a demo. Impress enough people with your demo and they will do alot of your marketing and hype generation for free. Word of mouth is still very powerfull.

Funcom with TSW was barely a blip on most people's radar. Previous "failure" with AoC, and lack of marketing probably made most people too skeptical to give it a try.

Better is a personal opinion. I think the main thing TSW does better is its skill tree, but that would not work in SW:ToR. I will say I have not had the best experiance in RSW though. I think it is a bug riddled mess suffering from massive memory leaks, and to add insult to injury Funcom just told me they relieze the game has a memory problem but I should just buy more RAM. At least when SW:ToR had memory leak problems they fixed it.

Either way TSW will be going F2P soon as well. They allready have the game designed for a F2P market with the inclusion of a cash shop. Which if you ask me a cash shop has no place in a subscription based gamw.

One word killed the sales for this game, Funcom.

Either way it will go F2P before its 1 year anniversery.

obviously me saying TSW is better than swtor is just my opinion.. either way I agree with whats in red. Well actualy I think they should of just gone B2P with their cash shop but hopefully they do the conversion soon rather than later.

Starter sales do not equal a win game.  History has shown us this.  I bet TSW does much better than Swtor in six months.

Star Wars Galaxies only sold 350k...after the first expac.

    Lord of the Rings Online...172k

    Dungeons and Dragons Online...lol

Sorry, but you are wrong. TSW didnt do well for one reason and one reason only...Funcom makes games with great potential, not great games. Its their reputation, and they earned it...again.

The sad thing is I think both games are solid games that just needed at least one more year to cook. Bio should have included the LFG tool day one and have been a B2P game as well as TSW. I don"t feel the market is in the position to support sub based games anymore(and before someone mentions WoW just consider the fact that for the most part it is the only large subs based game out there anymore).
