Sell me on gw2, please.

Alright, kind of walking into the flames on this one, but here's my situation.

for the past two years, i've just kind of /shrugged at gw2, everything they advertised? someone else had.. action combat? tera. No holy trinity? TSW, etc. but as release nears, and my wallet is looking sad,, the b2p model looks very attractive, and a quick youtube gameplay look makes it at least look.. fun.

That said the lack of weapon skills beyond the 5 you have equipped (.. I would play a greatsword warrior, and would try and stick to only greatswords, /sad at only 5 abilities)

Problem is anytime I bring this up.. anywhere, I get two parties  one going "Yea, I bought it, but didn't even get to the last beta weekend, bored me." and "GW2 IS THE NEXT COMING OF JESUS" -- seeing as the latter is rabid fanboyism, and the former.. not, that worries me.

But I also realized, my /shrugging has lead me to not really follow it.. and I don't know much about gw2, so I Thought i'd as here, maybe someone can enlighten me on the finer points, help me make hte concious decision to spend 60$ on something i'm in the dark about.

Thanks.

You could start by reading the billion posts about the game. But really, Aerowyn has a pretty damn fine primer here:

Edit: And here is the "everything" thread"

You can switch between two weapon sets on the fly = more skills.

Also I play TSW and trust me the trinity is very much alive.

Population is the only reason you should need and the only reason the game has to offer.

No offense, but you should really do your own research, and decide for yourself if you'll like it.

Look for RipperX's and Bill's videos for GW2, it's what sold me.

I've been played many MMOs. I've enjoyed many of them too, but as the years went on I honesly got bored of all the negatives of them.

    Killing stealing

    LFG for 2 + hours

Repeating same raids/dungeons over and over again

Boring quests that just require you to kill x mobs.

Insanely high level progression. Talking 13,000,000 exp to level and each mob gives ~500 exp.

    Pay to Win cashshop

Developers don't listen to player feedback. Don't fix bugs because it can hurt their bottom line.

Like I said before many of these games when I first started playing, I truly really enjoyed it very much, but over time I began to despise them. So for me, I thought I would give GW2 a try because all these negatives that I posted, they either fixed or completely revamped. I tried the game and I enjoyed it. I am looking forward to it.

But if you require help deciding if you want to purchase the game, think what makes a game really "fun" for you. What keeps you hooked and see if GW2 has that. If it doesn't see what other innovations they have to replace that and at the end of the day just watch tons of videos.

Might be a bit off topic here, but as far as I know, you still need tanks and heals in TSW.  It's not nearly the same as GW2 where you can go in with 5 damage classes.  So, no.

  • terrantterrant Member Posts: 1,683

Honest answer? Go play it yourself.

I had high hopes for it. I played it. It delivered pretty much everything I wanted. I'm going to keep playing it. That's all there is to it.

I was also on the fence for quite a while, but I'm pretty well won over (understatement).

There's too many things to sell on (I'd also recommend going through those video links) but at least on your point re: weapon skills -- you really have 2 sets of weapons and you switch between them during combat all the time.  There is a synergy between the weapons when swapping, so you will be mixing moves from one with moves on another, plus another 5 custom skills which you fill the rest of your bar up with -- also which interact with your 10 active weapon skills.

I thought it was all pretty limited at first, but now I believe it is a very robust and cool system which makes for interesting and  very customizable combat.

Not sure what you mean by this, but it will have a nice population.

-- I also made the mistake of listening to a touch of your youtube link, what a complete mosh of misinformation. The people doing that podcast shouldn't be gaming, at all.

I'll let Alex try and convince you.

On a side note about the abilities in combat...I have not felt 1 iota of a button sequence in combat for GW2....granted in a lot fo situations some might go into that 112211311221161122 mode...But GW2 combat defiently feels more visceral for me.  I feel I have more freedom to be creative in how I conduct myself in combat and not be punished for it like you do in other MMORPGs.

TSW I also sometimes get that feeling as well as a team healer when I'm not min/maxing...however I don't get the freedom to swap weapons on the fly so combat is just less exciting especially as a DPS...But healing some of those boss fights like the one in DW with the moving glyphs starts to feel clunky and yet fun for me because I come from the EQ gen where CH chains was all you did.

WoW..it's all about ability sequences and Blizzard tried to deter that by throwing a tiny wrench when they reintroduced interrupts and CC in dungeons and not just raids.  It still sits on that base of being a numbers game.  You can't dodge attacks to change the outcome of a fight like you can in GW2.

Oh...and you get 5 additional abilities as well during the downed state which if used properly can be a very rewarding experience.

OP should've gotten a beta key for one of the weekend events.

Really, the only way you're gonna find out if you like it or not is playing the darn thing.

Sell to me first why I should sell GW2 to you.
  • WeretigarWeretigar Member UncommonPosts: 600

We are not allowed to sell people on the auction house anymore since the cival war in N/A

If you do not mean it like that thou, The reason I am playing GW2 is because I played it and liked it. So the only thing I can recommend that you do is try it out.

Lots of people seem to enjoy the game. It is a little corney at times, but aren't all save the princess fantasy style games?

Also if it releases support for the oculas rift, with first person view and decent controller capability it will be like playing a REAL .HACK. That enough for me to be hopefull to the future.

Well for starters you should get the notion that IF you play you will ONLY play as a  greatsword warrior. not that you are wrong but if you read around about the game one of the hot topics is how you come in with the preconceived notion of what/how you are gonna play and walk out with great confusion because you generally will most likely enjoy a lot more than you think. I know I expected to play a sword and board warrior on the first go and while I stil plan on playing warrior, theres no way I will solely play just sword and shield because all of the weapons are too much fun.

Secondly I'd start watching the gameplay videos because the game releases in 12 days (9 for pre purchasers). Since you come off as on a tight budget, watching videos is about the best advice I can give you because opinions will vary. I would have recommended nabbing beta keys when they were offered but seeing as how you chose to ignore the game untill now, we are past that point I am afraid. Good luck and feel free to message if you have any specific questions/concerns.

For me, would be just a read of the manifesto:

    http://www.arena.net/blog/guild-wars-2-design-manifesto

Personally, from playing the beta weekends, I feel they achieved everything they wrote there (of course, YMMV), so I'd say that if that describes the kind of game you'd want to play, then GW2 is for you, if it doesn't, then it isn't.. just like that.

What can men do against such reckless hate?

    Hey, some of you..

Take a moment to consider that if you do not want to try and respond condusively to what was being asked by the OP then perhaps you should have skipped this thread...

Some of us actually like talking excitedly about GW2 and offering our insight to people like the OP when they express apprehension.

    -Thanks

Im going to make a warrior with some of the dungeon armor i saw look just like cecil from ff2 us 4 international. I mean comone i can make his hair white and long and keep 2 sets greatsword with evil armor and SnS with holy looking armor.  It's going to be epic.

I just jumped in blind today and pre ordered . I figure 59 bucks and if i dont like it , its always be a true free to play game like the first guild wars. I tried that when it was somewhat new, played it on and off for a few weeks and never really gave it a chance. I went back and played SWG .

If you buy an MMO box and stick around a couple months in sub fees and the games sucks , "like we have seen in the not to distant past"  . Then you pissed the money away anyway. At least this game it will be on a drive and you can always log in.

I think you mean constructively? (EDIT: Conducively, apparently. Sorry I'm running a bit slow)

Assuming that...It's hard to do. We've seen a HUGE mess of these "Tell me why I should play your game" threads here, and a large number of those were bait threads. I don't think the OP is, but I still gave the most sensible answer I can: The only way to really know that is to try a game yourself. There's a lot of extensive BWE reviews from people like myself, DarkPony, Korrigan, and others..he can read those if he likes. He can watch Aerowyn's videos, or WoodenPotatoes, or TotalBiscuit. He can go through every developer blog. Firsthand experience trumps em all.

I'm not going to "sell" you on it, but I'll give you the short version of how I look at it.

I'd argue that Guild Wars 2 is probably the best made MMO of this type I've seen in a while.   If you don't like games like this then it won't matter to you.  The game was designed with PvP from the get-go, not tacked on as some after thought.   It has no monthly fee which makes it casual friendly if that's your thing, and doesn't make you in a constant state of evaluation trying to decide whether you want to keep going because you are chained to it with a recurring fee.  There seems to be a nice amount of PvE content in the game, and the WvWvW is decent for what it is.   If you played this game for a month straight and quit, I'd argue you probably would have got your $60 worth.   I think there's enough meat here to entertain for that long, and there's not a lot of other full price games that I can say that about.

It's not a Jesus MMO or cancer curing game, but it is solid.  The good thing about the beta is that it is probably the only MMO beta that actually lets you see the end game (PvP), where as a lot of other MMOs box you in and you find out after launch that there either is no end game or it's terrible.    The beta is pretty much a "what you see is what you'll get" scenario.   I can't speak tthe longevity of the game because I'm not sure how active the devs will be about adding stuff, which will be important.
