I apologize if my message was ambiguous. I was trying to convey to the OP that if a game has population it is reason enough to play. If an MMO doesn't have population it has ended before you install.

The podcasters are different in the way they deliver their information, but it has always been the truth which is the reason I continue to listen. I actually listened to the whole thing, because I'm brave that way!
Uhm. There was a lot of misinformation and confusion on their part. Also, calling it 'Gimp Wars' repeatedly and referring to other people as gimps constantly is obviously just a petty shock tactic. I felt a little embarrassed for them really, since presumably they're adults.
Might be a bit off topic here, but as far as I know, you still need tanks and heals in TSW. It's not nearly the same as GW2 where you can go in with 5 damage classes. So, no.
Well, you don't know much about TSW then, because the game gives you plenty of options to play your way. Want tanks and healers ? Fine, you can play that way.
Want to get rid of the typical roles? It's there too.
Personally. I've done so far Polaris and Hell Raised with 5 people all in hybrid roles, and it's incredibly fun. Don't know if this is viable for every dungeon, but in my opinion, these gameplay options are better than anything I saw in GW2.

The truth may be puzzling. It may take some work to grapple with. It may be counterintuitive. It may contradict deeply held prejudices. It may not be consonant with what we desperately want to be true. But our preferences do not determine what's true.
Here are a few reasons that after being skeptical of GW2 but also being few up with standard quest grind MMOs I became a fan. In the end my reason is that it's just fun to play. These are a few points from a PvE perspective from when I played in BWE2 & 3:
You don't feel like you're in a bubble from others. Everyone can res and heal plus a lot of your actions share boons with those around. Most of the content you encounter is going on for everyone else there, which can scale in diffculty for, so you start to think about those around you. All of this can be without being in a group. You can "solo" with others every moment you play because there is no mob tagging or loot roll, everyone get their own loot, coin, xp, etc.
Dynamic events and the Hearts. Things are happening around you instead of just waiting there for you to arrive. Yes, you have to explore for yourself at times but the "points of interest" fill in the gaps between events you may encounter (some go on for a bit so you may find the DE in the middle, just ended, etc.). These points of interest show as a */* in a few catagories on your map so finding all of them can lead into more DEs or jumping puzzles. The "Hearts" you hear about are the equivilent of a quest hub but they show up on your log as you enter the applicable area and go away if you leave, saving your spot of course. Filling the completion bar can usually be done in a multitude of ways. ANet has said, and you can see by the number of hearts total minus the beginning zones, the higher zones have few or no hearts and are replaced by more Dynamic events.
The game is built on re-playability. PvE - You gain levels up to 80 but going back to a lower level area will decrease your "active" level and base stats. The calculation comes out to level of area +2. You may not have a hard time with the content since you'll have all of your traits and higher gear on but you can go back and it won't be trivial. Since there are five 1-15 areas and various tiers higher up you can go back and explore what you didn't see getting to 80. Crafting - If you level Jeweler up to 70 then decide you want to switch to Armorsmith you can and if you go back to Jeweler you will still be 70.
I rambled on long enough but unless you're dead set on a sandbox or you find organized raiding the best part of an MMO I would give GW2 a chance.

Alright, kind of walking into the flames on this one, but here's my situation.
for the past two years, i've just kind of /shrugged at gw2, everything they advertised? someone else had.. action combat? tera. No holy trinity? TSW, etc. but as release nears, and my wallet is looking sad,, the b2p model looks very attractive, and a quick youtube gameplay look makes it at least look.. fun.
That said the lack of weapon skills beyond the 5 you have equipped (.. I would play a greatsword warrior, and would try and stick to only greatswords, /sad at only 5 abilities)
Problem is anytime I bring this up.. anywhere, I get two parties one going "Yea, I bought it, but didn't even get to the last beta weekend, bored me." and "GW2 IS THE NEXT COMING OF JESUS" -- seeing as the latter is rabid fanboyism, and the former.. not, that worries me.
But I also realized, my /shrugging has lead me to not really follow it.. and I don't know much about gw2, so I Thought i'd as here, maybe someone can enlighten me on the finer points, help me make hte concious decision to spend 60$ on something i'm in the dark about.
Thanks.
...Seriously, some awesome stickies at the top of these forums with everything you could possibly need to make a decision, and you want people to try to sell you on the game rather than taking the time to go through those?
I mean this in the nicest possible way and not in a snarky way; I don't really care whether you decide to play the game or not.
You, on the other hand, should care whether or not you do because it'd would be a shame to miss something you find fun and, on the flip side, pretty much suck for you to buy the game and realize you don't like it. So make a little effort and watch the videos in Aerowyn's sticky.

Only you can decide the right choice for you, but do keep in mind that the absolute best, most exciting time to play an MMO is at release when everyone is still in discovery mode and spoilers are not everywhere you look.
How you doing? You seem like the type of gamer that I personally connect with. Same age bracket, and probably same experiences.
I wanted to cover a few things of my past gaming experience to see if we connect so that when I make recommendations you might have some insight wether or not it'll fit for you.
Over the past 15 years I've been a Hardcore Raider, Semi hardcore dungeon runner, love adventure and exploration. I've always needed some reward to want to be driven to do anything within a game. For instance I felt artifact hunting in RIFT was a waste of time because they didn't give any worth while rewards. But on the other hand I did do daily quests to get enough needed points to collect Mounts... So go figure.
I love raiding when its done right. I love dungeons. I love the look of epic gear, usually lendedary gear in most games you see when those raider guys sit around major cities displaying off their EPIC loots. I lived for that stuff.
A good story line and great feel to combat is a major plus to me. For a game to be a winner for me it has to not just provide a few things that are interesting and fun but rather be an entire package. Here are some exampls of fails for me recently:
Tera - was interested in it prior to beta testing in Korea because of this "True Action Combat" I've played other games that had mobile combat like Dragons Nest and thought the graphics looked awesome while anticipating TERA. This combat system was to me the only unique aspect of the game which also did not deliver. Clunky choppy stop and go broke immersion for me and made it extremely under challanging. I made it to level 36 only dieing once to a BAM.. The game was just not good enough as a whole for me.
TSW - incredible story, lore, world aesthetics, and had some amazing aspects to quests, investigative and such. Character animations just blew my mind at how antiquated they were and how horrible it felt to run around and do anything. I wanted to love this game because of its reach past the typical high fantasy but couldn't get past this...
For these two above games I felt the things that made me unable to play them were big issues that most people say are a problem but are overlooked because the rest of it makes up for it. Like TERA's quest system SUCKS big time but people say the combat system makes up for it.... TSW's world lore and quests are amazing so people justify it when it comes to the horrible character animatiosn.
Guild wars 2 does not contain any such huge flaw that needs to be over looked because everything else makes up for it. Instead it contains thousands of little amazing things and a few really big things that make it just mind blowing.
See After I left my 9 months of serious hardcore raiding in RIFT and after testing those two games above I honestly felt my gaming career was over. Everything seemed like a lost cause. To top it all off Guild Wars 2 seemed way to good to be true.
No linear quest lines to follow, no fighting over resource nodes, no more raid instance area's for only a select few but instead massive open world Raid type content with tons of coordination. Hidden gems and attention to detail on a scale never seen before. I'm not a gigantic PvP'er and there are some major issues I have with sPvP but meh no game is absolutely perfect.
On the PvE side I personally have had all my initial criticism and cynical idea's of lieing marketing schemes put to rest, so far.
A friend of mine and I decided to put as much of their Manifesto to the test as possible to see if it could stand up to what we like in a game and have a little more then 30 days of game play longetivity.
I found out there are things within games that I didn't know I hated and things I didn't know I absolutely can't live without now.
I'll be honest with you I was ready to turn in the towel on gaming before I played in the BWE's but now I've put in 156+ hours of beta testing and pushed as much of the content for this game to the test I possibly could to determine if the "hype" or the marketing scheme this developer group ANET has promised its customers was true.
I can't forsee the future but I can tell you this, no other game on the market can compete against this title within the same genre and I'll be playing Guild Wars 2 for months to come and I hope you'll come and join us!!! ^_^
if you have any more specific questions please feel free to ask.

If you want to make statements such as "the amount of l2search responses doesn't speak well for the game's community..." then one can come back and say that your cavalier approch to learning about the game and possibily joining the community says a lot about you.
That blade cuts both ways.
Thankfully someone was able to articulate my thoughts on this thread before I responded. I still feel like this thread is a polished version of a troll thread. Less effort would have provided all the answers one could ask about the game without posting here and monitoring the responses.
I'm still debating whether to buy. Don't trust any MMO since every single one has failed after WoW. I'll read this thread tomorrow to see if someone has posted any convincing info about this game.

Probably the most telling thing, is that on page 1 of this thread, PAGE ONE; he was given links to a stickied thread, containing an absolute goldmine of information on the game. Couple that with it being almost entirely composed of labelled video links, that stuff takes a lot of work to put together.
To have the OP not only discount such helpful links, but then turn around and insult that community for 'not being helpful enough' says a lot about his character. Maybe he's a troll, maybe he just has a huge ego, but to me it sounds like he has an extremely inflated sense of entitlement. I mean, I can't think of any community which wouldn't offend the OP if that's his definition of a bad community. Information isn't cheap, it takes work, and good information isn't generally handed to you for free. The fact that this community is willing to put so much effort into handing people golden info actually speaks very highly of the GW2 community.
Originally posted by shr4pnel I'm still debating whether to buy. Don't trust any MMO since every single one has failed after WoW. I'll read this thread tomorrow to see if someone has posted any convincing info about this game.
If it helps, here are 2 threads that should give you all the info you'll need to make an informed decision and then some.
Stay skeptical, but if you are even remotely interested in the game, I'd strongly advise looking over the info. The videos especially will give you a clear understanding of the game, and are almost entirely put together by fans (and not Anet). There's a ton of info, and tbh Anet hasn't lied about anything, really.
The simple truth is that there is an overwhelming amount of info on the game. You could spend days pooring over it if you really wanted to. No one is going to sit down and go through all of that point by point w/ you over the forums. It would take way too long, and the thread would degenerate into a flame war far before they got through even half the available info. Furthermore, if someone somehow did manage to convince you, there would be another person just like you making a similar thread in a few days.
It's like trying to teach a population of people, one person at a time. It just doesn't make any sense, whatsoever.

Whether they are welcoming and helpful or not is another thing.
But can you imagine that you are probably the umpteenth person who has essentially said 'I haven't done any research and it has gone "under my radar"; so "instead of me looking into the game and diving into the plethora of information that is out there and coming back with specific questions I will just have everyone fill me in".
It really isn't fair is it?
If you had posted something like this it would seem like you were more engaged...
"hey guys, the game has fallen under my radar and admitedtly I have not followed every news article. Having said that, I've looked at some articles and read some previews and even went through several threads and I'd like some clarification on the following [enter x, y, z].
If it helps, here are 2 threads that should give you all the info you'll need to make an informed decision and then some.
Videos
Written Facts / Links
