Is the Launch of GW2 becoming a Disaster?

Atlan99Atlan99 Member UncommonPosts: 1,332

1) No forums.

2)Trading Post down

3)Mail System taken down sporadically

4)Rubberbanding/Lag Issues

5)Accounts Hacked/Accounts Banned

6)Little Accountability/Support

7)Bugged Guild Tabs/WvWvW Tabs

8)Plenty of Broken DE's. A great number of these are higher level escort quests. The problem is increased in scale for these higher level DE's because they advance important chains. So these DE's being bugged are a bigger issue than a normal game's one quest being bugged.

This launch seems to get worse with every passing day and Arenanet's ability to cope seems in question. Is this launch starting to spin out of control and become a disaster?

The other thing that seems very troubling, is having to go to third parties to find out what is going on.

Game is perfectly playable. I've not had any major issues aside from the trading post being down.

When you understand the way their systems work and the difference between this game and others like SW:TOR or WoW then you can appreciate a bit more just how smoothly everything is going.

Its been shaky, but i wouldnt say its a disaster.I've had very little issue with playing the game myself.

Those things are completely normal  and expected during game launches, or so I hear.

You just explained things that happen in every MMO on a daily basis. No, it's not the worst and for the most part people are able to log in and play just fine. The only universal problem with playing the game seems to be the broker (which is up now right?) and the mail system (up?).

    You causin' trouble? /narroweye

I've played the game for a few hours today, and I must say that I didn't encounter any problems accept the auction house ant the mail system. The game gas been running very smooth, without any lag whatsoever on maxed-out settings.

    1) meh, don't care

    2) meh, don't care, it'll be up soon enough

    3) minor inconvenience, lasted a very short time

    4) none experienced here

    5) source?

    6) source?

    7) haven't experienced this

Posts of this sort were to be expected.  Without backing up your assertions, it looks as if you were a doom'n'gloomer and are now looking for the rotten egg in the carton.  Each to his own, I suppose, but I'm NOT buying into your doom'n'gloom.

From my persepective, I've seen very few problems, and only had minor issues that have not really negatively impacted my enjoyment of the game. Ommv, but I am having more fun in an online game than I have had in many years.

No, we're still playing aren't we? They are clearly working on alot of things right now, I saw at least 5 hotfixes come in last night alone. Also I can now play WvW, which I couldn't for the first 4 days. I'd bet that was their first priority, and they'll work their way down the list. I haven't once fired up the game and been denied access. Not even once, since Friday when the servers opened (early). That's all I can ask for, and even a little more than I expect.

    2) Trading post is not down.

    3) Mail system was not taken down sporadically, it was announced in several locations. Twitter, Facebook, Reddit and on the launcher.

    4) Not having this issue myself

    5) Anet is working on this, it's something any popular MMO goes through sadly.

    6) Support has been top notch, not sure where you got this.

    7) haven't encountered this myself.

No this isn't looking anything like a disaster lol, yes they are having some issues but again all accept the account hacking is minor. Account hacking is going to happen on any MMO that gets this popular and even that Anet is working on.

So far my biggest gripe is the overflow system, it's a headache if you want to play with friends. Pugging is about the only option till they fix it. Annoying yes, disaster? No lol.

    @ OP

Thanks for the heads up. I am installing now, but at least I am expecting the worse.

  • observerobserver Member RarePosts: 3,685
I've experienced all of those except 5 & 7.  I'll give them a pass this week, but if this continues into the 2nd week, i'll just stop playing until they get it fixed.  Trading Post and Mail errors are game-breaking issues.

Zezda, tho your zeal is commendable, the game has been far from perfectly playable. Many people have been affected, and this has not been a smooth launch.

I wouldn't call it a "Disaster" as stated in the OP's thread title, but this has thus far been one of the less smooth recent launches that I am aware of. Now w just need to be patient for the fixes and not rage about a little inconvenience here and there.

Please explain how their system is so much more superior to TOR or WoW that having bugs at launch in GW2 is any different then any other MMO?  If any other MMO had these issues 2 days (5 days) into launch this website would be fuming at the mouth.

Get over it they are having issues at launch, the game is fun but nothing ground breaking.  Keep telling yourself they can do no wrong.

I think it's funny how problems in a game a person likes are acceptable and not a big deal, but when a game is disliked it's a terrible launch, fail, etc.

I am enjoying GW2 but haven't drank the kool-aid enough to ignore the fact that they do seem to be having some major issues. The trading post doesn't work, and guild functionality is pretty broken right now. That being said, I do understand MMO's for whatever reason have rough starts and it's now in Anet's hands. They will either get fixes out and solve the problems or GW2 will just end up being known as another game a bad launch killed. Only time will tell, I hope for the first option personally.

    .

If WoW was released today even in its' entirety it would be f2p in 3 months.
Why is it still such a big deal?

I've only been affected by one of the above, being the trading post.  I'm having more fun then in any game I've played in the past year or so easily. And I'm the furthest thing from an anet fanboy there is. I didn't care for gw1, and spent a fair amount of time arguing with the gw2 crowd. However, I'm man enough to admit when I am wrong, and I was wrong about ths game. It's just fun.

  • kDeviLkDeviL Member UncommonPosts: 215
As much of a disaster those problems would be in any other game,  They are MINOR annoyances with everything else in gw2.

    Agreed.

The OP's list is accurate as far as complaints.  However since its GW2 its allll goood.  Any other game it would be a shitstorm.

I feel its best when the herd chooses a game to hype to steer clear of it for at least a month before hopping in.

With themeparks its pretty hard to hate the game when its fresh and new.  Only after people start to hit endgame does the fun wear off if the game isnt truely quality and unique.

Im banking anything actually fun to do at endgame comes for $60 in an expansion...i may wait out the game for that...but even then...paying $120 for a game with a cash shop...yikes.... especially if you dont like it after a month.

Seriously, do you understand that the Trade Post is across all servers? Do you understand that to use it you go through an authentication process?

Do you have any idea the amount of extra load that gets put on ArenaNet's backend system because of the different features that are in the game, like the server transfers and the overflow system. Given than they had had more concurrent users during headstart alone than SW:TOR ever managed do you not think it's only fair there are some teething issues with some things? Even being able to join multiple guilds causes a lot of extra load due to them working across all servers.

The mail was taken down due to potential abuse. Everything else on the list is due to capacity/load issues on their service, which is higher per user than other MMO's. The forums are also down to reduce load across their network. Forums aren't needed to run a game smoothly when they have other methods of communicating with their players.

The fricken president of the company is prepared to even cease selling copies of the game to make sure the game remains playable and that they can manage the load.

In fact I'm surprised more stuff hasn't broken horribly during release. The amount of resources needed to run this game per person is going to be much higher than what other companies have had to account for. The fact that the only major issues aside from capacity is their password reset page confirming if email addresses exist on their database is a potential and a exploit of the mail system is nothing other than a complete success, as far as launches go.

Do you want me to start on how they can patch the servers and launch entire new builds without downtime? Or how about that they can disable certain features of the game without even requiring people to restart their clients? How about that they can enable certain things like the trade post to a certain amount of players to test the load before they decide to go full tilt with it?

It's easy to sit there and criticize but when you actually start thinking about the issues and why they are happening and compare it to other stuff you can't honestly still hold the opinion that this has not been a good launch.

Regarding the hacking. It is not Anet fault.

How can i tell : i used to play wow for as long as the game exist. and i have recently in bw3 quit WoW as per i like GW2 better. ( still have my account but not active )

And since i played WoW from the start and never got hacked, and never use a authenticator. you can rest assured it is not the business behind the product doing something wrong but the player or players.

Reason behind this : each time i stop playing ( 1 or multiple months WoW  ), the amount of phishing emails received went down significently almost at a full stop. But when i renewed it and start playing agaan i just needed a couple of day's of party with a few players and bam full spam again. ( the spammers or hackers are the players )

    Trick :

Use a gmail or hotmail account but just for the games you play. make sure to not add anyone in your spam box.

Once you receive a scam email ( remember Anet or any other business ) will never ask for your password.

If you never requested yet a password reset but do receive  a email stating you did , then add that email to your spambox.

If you receive a email regarding they suspect you of scamming or trying to sell your account etc. add them to spambox

Want to test if it was them or not. after the previous steps taken. Request a password change. you will receive the real email this time dont add it to the spam box and voila :).

Now that you did do a password request and deleted the email afterwards then any future one will be spam.

Every other emails from the scammers will be sent to spam box. And if you dont reset often or have not clicked the check box to receive promo from your gameing business ( best thing to do is not check it ) then you will be sure that all other emails from them will be in your inbox and phishing in spam box.

There might be a few still going inbox. ( but come on if you never hacked them or use 3rd party illigal software or got gold from a farmer on your game. it is not possible for them to send you something that say's your account have been flagged for trying to sell you account or we have determined you used  X software to hack etc. ). so it is safe to put that email in spambox
