Even if my 2 favorite games wow and eve online would become f2p i would live them in a sec. And if everything is ''F2P'' i go back to single player!

Incidentally, it's becoming common for single player games to sell DLCs. They're somehow similar to unlockable contents you can buy from a  cash shop. They're optional, but seeing as you view F2P games as "nothing is free", then I'd be hard pressed to believe that you can control the urge to buy those DLCs.

It is funny seeing players complaining about f2p, especially when mmos players has been getting less and less supportive on their games with the least attachment.

    I have read something like:

"Dev of X game, you should cater me, if you do I might play your game until Y game launches"

f2p is basically an approach to gather more people by letting some people pay more and some pay less or nothing at all. Of course, those who pays more expect getting something out of it, they are not doing charity for those who does not pay. The benefit can be in the form of conveniency, power and/or fluffy stuff. Depending on the nature and the competitiveness of the game.

pay to win or time to win lead to inequality, some faction will get the short straw. I know some people tends to make its vision based of their experience or anecdotes with poor possibilities of generalization. The only difference is that pay to win tends to benefit the gaming company.

I remember FF14 tried to limit a bit time to win, and there was an uproar like it was outrageous not letting people to play an insane amount of hours a day.

Anyway, this debate will get nowhere since people are too closeminded to consider that they might be at least partially wrong.

If you like F2P or not it will definetly be the future since it is the advanced payment modell, especially for MMO's. It is the first payment modell that respects that you do not necessarily have to pay a company to give the company some value.

The problem with F2P however is that there are a lot of companys (zynga leading the group) who are really absuing it and just trying to milk everything out of the players.

But think for instance about League of Legends a game which in the end became so popular because of it great F2P modell.

    Kind regards,

Free to play games have a few shades of grey so lumping them all into "F2P" is going to cause confusion and arguments away from the original topic. I think it's important to realize the difference between EQ2 and Vindictus.

What all of them have in common is the need to keep the lights on, it's developers fed (no, ramen noodles don't count) and servers running. They need some form of income no matter how free to play they are or how much work it takes to update them.

The grey area comes with the quality of the game vs. the scope of the design vs. how much the company gives away (F2P) vs. what they are charging for and for how much. It's a sliding scale and people get what they pay for.

This model wouldn't exist if there wasn't countless suckers to fund it.

The only scam in F2P games is the "FREE" part.

If you are serious about playing F2P games you have to spend money on it.

And more than often F2P games are the _MOST_ expensive games out there.

The only F2P game that has fully optional cash shop considering you play _A LOT_ is league of legends. Because Riot is constantly launching OP champions and you have to have one of those in your team (until they get nerfed) it requires you to have in-game or real-money to purchase those champions.

Non-gamers do enjoy F2P games (without paying) because the have no issue or are too stupid to realize then unbalances F2P cash shops create. Sigh I wish I could play Atlantica Online with 13$ a month but unfortunately that game requires around 20-25$ a month to stay competitive.

Once Dota 2 is launched it will be the most balanced F2P game out there because the champions will be free and there are no buffs/runes or anything you can buy with RMT. Only skins.

Well no business model would exist, for long, if there wasn't a market for it. I don't think it's fair to call them "suckers" because to them it was worth it. I would love to go back to all content for box +15.00/month but would that model have guven us better games five years down the road?

What the F2P craze did IMO was to halt the production of similar MMOs saturating the market. It also gave developers the notice that if you want a long standing customer than you better bring it because I can play this over here for free to a certain point. It has also created competition with games that are already out since most AAA games charge for one thing or another.

It's a different market now but I believe, as opposed as I was to anything not a monthly sub, this will be better for the consumer. A few years down the road will tell.

Things in the MMO world must be slow when we have rediscovered F2P is a scam. But I abhor it myself so I am quite happy to punch this old punching bag once again. :)

Serious? Just be NOT serious then. I play lots of F2P games, and have yet to pay a cent. So does a majority of players.

Don't tell me you are in it to "contribute" to the genre instead of having fun?

i only made it page 3 and came to the conclusion that people who dont like F2P games dont like them becasue they are deceiving, not necessarily because they are low quality games. now that it has been pointed out that most F2P games arent actually free you dont have to set yourself up for disappointment anymore. now you know what your getting into and you can enjoy a vast number of new games you normally would have written off.
