ok I am getting sick with all of this wow clones bull crap wow is a everquest clone!!. It started with everquest not wow so please stop referring every game that comes out is a wow clone not true it is everquest.
Not really, I didn't play EQ, was on still the best mmo but lacking in community AC instead, except a bit of the PS2 version but there were many, many glaring differences. A ridiculous amount, really.
indeed wow took many things from EQ (not only) and implement them even BETTER than in original games.
on the other side, wow clones are taking things from wow but implement them much worse than wow is for itself. even after 10 years they cant implement wow features in newest games in a better way
While I think you are technically correct in that EQ was the first widely popular MMO that gained acceptance and spawned WOW and all the rest, EQ wasn't the first MMO by a long shot. There were so many prior to that. The difference between those and EQ was they were all pretty niche games, had much smaller populations and some were even text based.
While I agree with you that everything coming out is not a "wow clone" like most of the script kiddies claim, EQ wasn't the first either.

^This.
For example, WoW invented the dungon finder. Love it or hate it, no game (except Rift after a few itterations) has been able to implement it properly.

If you didn't play EQ how would you know these things?

I agree with the OP. People do over use the term WoW clone on this forum without knowing anything about the game. My fav is calling games like ESO, AA, CU all WoW clones lol. The list could go on and on. EQ was the first MMO to make MMOing what it is today. Sure EQ also did take some of what made it great from other games but they set the model to make it big first that others tried to copy. Takes more then a hot bar and a mini map to make a game a WoW clone.

Yup.

And yet it's VERY clear that SWTOR and other clones are following WoW, not EQ.
WoW may have cloned some of the base mechanics of EQ, but it did not even remotely follow the feel or execution.
EQ is a deep, harsh, social virtual world. WoW is an arcade game. SWTOR is an arcade game, not a virtual world.
WoW took the worst parts of EQ, made them simpler, and left out the only parts that made EQ worth playing. By their powers combined, WoW, a garbage game that added NOTHING new to the genre.

When making a comparison, it's always most effective to compare to something the reader already knows about. Otherwise the readers would only end up to information about how unkown is similar to/different from other unkown, wich isn't informative at all.
Calling games WoW clones and comparing them to WoW does not necessarily mean that you or anyone else would think that WoW did something the first. It's because audience needs to know the point of comparison.

True, but what the heck...
OP, people use 'WOW clone' because more people are familiar with WOW than with EQ. The point is not to create some historical origin for the style but to quickly relay the style or design of a game in as few words possible.

Aaaand because it's more accurate. SWTOR and AoC are WoW clones. They have almost NOTHING to do with EQ.

I am 99.9% sure that Blizzard stole the dungeon finder. Can't remember the game at the moment.

Command and Conquer was a clone of Dune 2
Final Fantasy Tactics was a clone of Tactics Ogre
