Wow might have the largest subscribers base, but it doesn't make it a 2013 game. The time has changed, we are sick of mmorpgs with standard quests, standard lvls, and standard bullshit.
This year is when things begin to change, this year ppl are starting to appreciate the TRUE mmorpg genre, the sandbox. Because, IMO, all the other mmorpgs (i think they'r more commonly named Themeparks) don't have replay value. I mean, if you like to log in, click on top of a monster head and get it's xp, you are a kid with nothing else to do.
People who got a life don't want to do meaningless things in a mmorpg, it's a fact. A good mmorpg must have surprise and fear elements, each time you log in you'll have a different experience because everything is player-driven, not just a bunch of AI npcs standing there.
This genre need more full-loot pvp, player-crafter usefull stuff, building... just like UO, Darkfall, and from what i've heard, EvE.
Usually, people who like games such as Neverwinter, Wow, GW2, and all the cloned garbage, simply haven't tasted the REAL stuff, the REAL fear of death and adrenaline rush experiences that one can have when battling a Boss while a PK is on your tail just waiting to steal your reward.
If you're not rdy for this, go back to the past decade, cuz 2013 it's going the right way.
To put GW2 into the same category as WoW or Neverwinter means that you're beyond ignorant. GW2 has set it's own standard within the genre: Monthly (and sometimes bi-monthly) content updates stacked on top of the normal bug/balance stuff. And, it offers game play options for so many different styles: PvP, large-scale open world PvP (i.e. World vs World), PvE, exploration, RP, and so on. The game is not just "go here, do this".
Because of the many, many, many ways to play the game, on top of it's very well polished state, and the valued content that keeps coming out without a subscription, makes for it to be #1. DEAL WITH IT!
Your list is fine as a popularity contest for this community. "Best" is too subjective to be universally accepted. Not sure I'd put DF and AoW up there, but for me tht would mean restricting the list to 5, since I can't think of another two tat could fill the slots.
If you were doing an actual best list based on actual metrics then as usual WoW would beat everything else (combined) by a country mile. But no doubt that's boring after 8 years of the same result.
Your list highlighted how poorly 2013 is progressing for me. Bring on 2014.
I only like Neverwinter and The Secret World from that list. TOR is good if you play it for the storyline as a single player game as well. The rest in that list is rubbish.
My opinion is my own. I respect all other opinions and views equally, but keep in mind that my opinion will always be the best for me. That's why it's my opinion.
Originally posted by Saryhl I agree with ShakyMo, not about the payment part, but about the those games are not from 2013. A best of 20xx is meant to be a list of games that came out that year. Especially when you say Best of 2013 So far, implying more are coming, games from previous years did not launch in 2013 and do not belong. Period. So congratulations on poor use of titling.
The list is intended to be exactly what the author intends it to be. A simple use of context can help you understand what this list is, which is a combination of the best games out right now in 2013 and the games that have done the most so far in 2013. And the thread's title fits that perfectly.
22 people that dont understand that this list isn't titled "the best mmo releases of 2013"
52 people that believe WoW is somehow better than games on this list. Bigger does not equal better.
60 people that think rift should be on this list (which quite possibly could be the entire gaming population of that game right now)
30 people that think or have implied that MMORPG must have been paid to make this list.
32 people that think SWTOR is the worst game ever
65 people that think SWTOR should be on the list, but one slot higher or lower
88 people that agree with this but have their own list that differs by 1-2 titles suggesting they actually dont agree.
62 people that think this is "some kind of joke" or that they "must be joking". Passive aggressive is bad. It makes you a jerk.
FYI "LOL" stands for Laughing Out Loud. Use it when something would, O, IDK make you actually chuckle. Quotes like "SWTOR is the worst thing ever created in the history of man and should not be on this list lol" are stupid. In what real world did you say that either while laughing or laugh audibly after that statement? You didn't and you wouldn't unless you are a mentally handicapped supervillian. LOL is not a way to end every opinion statement, or a way to voice disagreement. Make your statement and stand by it. Lol makes it hard to take you seriously.
Also, If your game has the feeling of ZERO population... it might not have made this list for a reason. If only there was some descriptor word in MMO that had something to do with the size of population in the multiplayer online game.
Seeing DF:UW and SWToR on there has to have a lot of people throwing themselves at their monitors. I have to agree with Skullagrim to a large extent, except my list would put WoW at #7 since they are are being buried under an avalanche of money with that game and still haven't done much new with it and I would probably bump NW off the list. More like:
1. Rift
2. GW2
3. Eve
4. TSW
5. SWToR
6. Aion (maybe)
7. WoW
Currently playing: Rift Played: SWToR, Aion,EQ, Dark Age of Camelot World of Warcraft, AoC
Neverwinter over The Secret World huh? Now that's a funny one. Even funnier is Age of Wushu being on the list over RIFT, AION, LOTRO, AoC, EQ2 or EQ1, WOW, etc.
Garbage list is garbage. Obviously, this is the correct list. 7. auto assault 6. Tabula Rassa 5. Fallen Earth 4. City of Heroes 3. Earth and Beyond 2. Shadowbane 1. Star Wars Galaxies
if you pretend the title of the column is "The 7 MMO's MMORPG.com Staff Currently Play" its a lot more palatable. Not that I could do a better list of 7, aside from Eve there's no MMO going that really deserves a spot on a "best of ..." list.
Wow how the fuck can you list GW2 over EVE? A game that has been getting free expansions for the last 10 years! A userbase that has been growing since day one. EVE number 1 and I dont even play that game anymore. Either MMORPG is getting paid to put GW2 there or bill is a fanboy of GW2, either way it's shit.
This is the craziest list I've seen yet. There is no rhyme or reason to this, seems like somebody threw a bunch of games in a hat and just pulled them out randomly.
Totally confused .... ?
Exactly why it's so much fun.
1) Pick your list via some obscure method (say, sub-message board hits per hour for Jan through April.... ....for example...)
2) Publish, lean back and listen to the wailing and complaining from outraged fanboys whose favorite game should be (in their opinions) higher or lower.
3) Sip your coffee and snicker.
4) The best part of all would be explaining to the Haters, in say, December....that the game they spent so much time writing hate threads about scored so high on the 'best of' list because of their personal dedication to generating message board hits.
Oh my God, the comments in this thread, I'm in tears from laughter.
I do agree with GW2 the rest would be different, following GW2 would be TSW, and Rift for me.
I might get banned for this. - Rizel Star.
I'm not afraid to tell trolls what they [need] to hear, even if that means for me to have an forced absence afterwards.
P2P LOGIC = If it's P2P it means longevity, overall better game, and THE BEST SUPPORT EVER!!!!!(Which has been rinsed and repeated about a thousand times)
Common Sense Logic = P2P logic is no better than F2P Logic.

MMOs are games that are constantly evolving and this review looks at the state of the game almost half a year after launch.
Gw2 Pros: No subscription fees; can be played like a single player RPG; you can just jump into PVP; you can reach the level cap fairly quickly
Gw2 Cons: No actual guild wars?!; No 1v1 duelling;
The bottom line: Guild Wars 2 is worth trying for fans of MMOs and RPGs - the worst you can have is a decent single player RPG with many hours of gameplay.
Interesting list, good mixture of different MMOs, you got your PvP (age of wushu/dark fall) you got your story based ones (SWTOR/GW2) and some in between.
My list would go as such:
1. Age of Wushu: Good PvP system/prison system.
2. SWTOR: Love the stories and the alignment system
3. TSW: Story again (yes I"m an RPG fan, we love our stories, (for the nitpicky no that doesn't include everyone so don't take it literally)
4. EQ1/2: original love and still fun, has lots of unique races, good faction system
5. Wizard101/Pirate 101 (no i didn't vote in that contest): unique story/environment and different combat system
I'm sure there is more, as a gamer I love what is in the game rather then what it lacks but i don't want to create a huge list as i'm not the one doing the article and I don't want to "outdo" you, so i'll leave it at 5 (7 if you separate the last two games)for now.
For those who remember me, yes I know swtor is 2, I didn't feel it went far enough with the good/evil thing, thats kind of a Bioware staple would have loved to see that go futher then it did. Being that it didn't plus you can't make critical changing decisions (killing companions for example) made it slip just a little. Plus I like how Age of Wushu did the whole alignment thing, just wish killing/kidnapping someone wasn't the exact same amount of evil. (ah well c'est la vie)
Good list, look forward to more articles from you guys. Always insightful to see what people do and don't like (assuming they can keep their emotions in check).
Help me Bioware, you're my only hope.
Is ToR going to be good? Dude it's Bioware making a freaking star wars game, all signs point to awesome. -G4tv MMo report.
SWTOR? Really? Yes, I did enjoy the storyline, I grant you that. But, oh, how awful the implementation of f2p, the horribleness of the cartel market, the complete stupidity of the space game, the total waste of crafting and housing- plus I blame them for the death of Star Wars Galaxies! ..,. I'm sorry, but if you want to immerse yourself in a world Lord of the Rings Online is a much better 'buy' than SWTOR . SWG, rest in peace, may the Valar guide you on your next journey. Long live LotRO! and weep tears of sorrow for Bioware and the evil that has befallen that company having gotten into bed with EA...
I'll go for Star wars old repub. The Old Republic has no structured tutorial. Rather, there's a tip system that offers help about an aspect of gameplay whenever the context calls for it. In any other MMO, that would probably suffice, but the moment you set foot in The Old Republic you are faced with quest-givers, future quest-givers with grey quest icons, class-specific story areas that you can't enter, vendors, dialogue trees, half a dozen abilities and hostile NPCs who will attack on sight. That's a whole lot to take in within the span of about five minutes, and while many of the systems that The Old Republic uses are familiar to MMO players, I can't help but think how overwhelmed I was by my first MMO, and just how much more The Old Republic throws at the you from the get-go.

Come on admit it someone broke out the tequila shooters and y'all decided to put out a crazy list to see what response you would get.

1) SWTOR - super fun doing story arc, end game same old - but story makes up for it.
2) TSW - best atmospheric world I have seen in an MMO
3) GW2 - fun for short sessions when everything else feels bland
4) Rift - great balance between WoW and what War should have been
5) WoW - same old crap - but tried and true
NW - meh - it is just an over sized lobby game/dungeon crawler.
AoW - meh - looks great, sandbox elements great, game is boring as hell.

I really do not have a lot of faith in many of you, after all you did vote prirate101 as best game for 2012......need i say more?
