From knowing nothing to release in 5 months?

Iceman8235Iceman8235 Member UncommonPosts: 205
I'm really looking forward to EQ Next, but this timeframe seems a little too optimistic.  We're going to go from knowing nothing at all, through an info. reveal, beta, stress tests, advertising pushes, all the way to release in 5 months?

The beta and stress test are the only things that matter on your list. Everything else can be done simultaneously. Whether or not they can make it run right in that amount of time is questionable but we will see in less than a month.

There's a high chance it's a total failure of a game and they're just throwing something out there hoping it sticks.

A game that stands on it's own doesn't need any hype, it will hype itself, Smedley has done nothing but hype this game.

Then there's the weird preview MMORPG and TTH got and they gave it rewards without anyone seeing it. You would think the first people you show the game would be your fans...why was this done in total secrecy?

Then there's the weird E3 preview that only let in a very few people.

And just the fact they released nothing about this game. They said it will be playable at SOE Live in 2 weeks...and they have shown nothing.

Altogether, extremely weird behavior for a gaming company.

There's a tiny bit of hope for me that this game will be amazing, but it's tiny. I'm not going to get hyped over something I know nothing about at all.

I'm not to worried about the stress test since PS2 is using the same engine, I figure they can pretty much nail down everything from there pretty quickly.   I'm just hoping the beta goes smooth with minimal bugs and glitches that are game breaking.

thank you for apparently being the only other sane person in regards to this upcoming mmo. who doesn't hope it will be fabulous? no one. who else has noticed that so far there has been nothing, zip, zero, zilch except word of mouth hype? apparently no one.

I couldn't agree more. Skepticism doesn't mean that I hope that the game will fail or be terrible but I need at least SOMETHING to hold my hopes on other than a name and some dev comments. Gotta see more. The timetable does seem a bit rushed to go from secret to launch so quickly.

If in 1982 we played with the current mentality, we would have burned down all the pac man games since the red ghost was clearly OP. Instead we just got better at the game.

If you haven't noticed, the advertising pushes are happening right now. They don't have to give us info for that and they can do beta / stress test in a few weekends.

You have to hand it to Smedley and his team,by just making several leading online game magazines - including the present - inflate the community's imagination they have the majority's full attention. All they have to do now is to put forward a pre-order policy in and they will capitalize majestically even if the title is complete snailshite (which it probably is), and make good $$ out of thin air. Yeah, welcome to the new [information] age, know how to market your crap

And when the game doesn't do well and the stockholders demand to know why, someone will invariably say that they didn't do enough to market the game.

Whether the failings are true or not.

This is a business after all.

So now people are complaining that they haven't been hyping this title long enough prior to release? We really have no idea how far they are along in the development process and I really don't see why they would need to hype a title more than a month or so before they were ready to beta test it and they have made it clear that they wanted to keep it under wraps for a while before tipping their hand to the rest of the industry. 5 months seems like more than enough time.

well tbh they have been working on this for awhile even though they canned some of it, it's still been worked on for a good minute, and i bet even if it fails how many of us will STILL play it regardless lol

The doubters are all up in here!

The marketing will begin around SOE Live, according to Georgeson.

I didn't make this post to flame SOE, but I've been gaming long enough to know that going from no information whatsoever to release in 5 months is optimistic.  For that to happen, the plan they have would have to go perfectly from august 2nd to release day and anyone that's been around to watch a game develop from its infancy knows the plan almost never goes perfectly.  Here's to hoping they prove me wrong and we're all playing a polished and revolutionary MMO by the end of the year.

We really have no idea when it will be released, we're all just speculating based on what SOE employees have stated in the past. We may find out an exact or approximate date at SOE Live.

You know, I think Smed's estimates are spot on.  They've been in a black box for a reason:  competition.  They want this game to succeed.  They don't have to "announce and list information" 2-years in advance.

Internal testing is done as you go.  As such, Alpha's aren't necessary.  Beta tests generally last 4-5 months.  Open Beta is nothing more than an advertising grab.

Also, note:  The game was re-built at some point.  So they had a lot of stuff finished already.  I think a release this year is indeed possible, or at the latest, Spring 14.

Jesus why don't you guys stop worrying about stuff, assuming the game will fail, have completely pessimistic attitudes, etc before we even know anything and let things have a chance to actually happen and develop?  Who knows, maybe you'll actually find a game you really like to play and nothing horrible will happen!

EQ next was planned sometime ago.I heard about it and then they revamped it so it has been in the works for sometime. Just because you have not heard of it does not mean we are all in that state nor is it any indication of its development schedule.

i believe they are using their proprietary engine (a la PS2) to make eqn so they might not need as strident testing, since they're pretty much the masters of their own engine.

in this way one could look at PS2 as kind of a dry run for eqn.  and if that's the case it went pretty smoothly.  ps2 isnt really my type of game but it's engine runs great.

I have been following EQN since 2009 and it had already been in development for some years at that time. Why is everybody surprised they kept it quiet after what happened with EQ2.

EQN is ready or very near ready for launch and with it been F2P it wouldn't surprise me if it went into open beta very soon after Aug 2nd .

We need to wait and see but this game has at least 5 years work on it and if they are ready to reveal it then they know its too later for somebody to steal their tech/designers.

I'm not a math wiz or anything but wouldn't it be useless for them to try to capitalize pre-orders?  I mean the game is f2p after all, and not b2p or p2p.  They would be trying to make their money from initial sales that they don't charge for.  Yea.  I'm sure that's exactly what they are doing.

Yep. SOE won't be selling a box, they will have digital pre-order bundles and such, but those are not required to play the game.

I seen an interview once on youtube with Georgeson.  Basically he sounded like they came up with great brand new ideas and did not want those ideas to be exposed to the competetors yet. They want to stay ahead of the curve.  Sort of like Rifts dynamic event idea, then GW2 following it maybe?

We will have to wait though to see if these ideas are truly revolutionary.

The game's either ready or it isn't.   Whether we know alot or very little about what they've got doesn't really affect that.

They could very well come out on Aug 2nd and explain the game in detail, then start beta the next week.   Or it could be years from being playable, who knows

How much do they really need to market? Gaming communities are on the net. We talk on twitter, facebook and forums, IM, chat programs. We also twitch live stream games and look up info on new games like a junkie looking for a new fix. You build a great game we do 75% of the work for them. Only time you really need to market is when you are an unknown. Everquest is a brand name so strong you just need to attach a good game to it and it will sell. Make an ok game and it will still make money sadly. Guess we will have to wait and see.

But not in a good way. With so many sub-species of gamer hoping it will be Just What They Want, it's clearly going to disappoint many, possibly even most of them.

And what do disappointed people do here on mmorpg.com?
