Developers offer deals like that for one reason: it guarantees them money upfront from players who otherwise would never spend that much throughout the life of the game. As a result, they turn a much larger profit per paying player than they otherwise would.
As a player, you can't possibly know if you're going to like the game enough to stick around for a full year. Only a fool or a spendthrift would pay such a price upfront.
I doubt SoE would promote a lifetime $200 pre-order membership. Their games are usually $50 + $19 a month + $50 an expansion. They would lose to much money.
If they would promote on I would easily pay $200 for a lifetime membership
You're wrong. I've been playing MMOs long enough to not only know what I'm looking for but also gauge how long I'm likely to play, within reason of course.
I've had at least one sub for the past ten years and I've subbed to less than 10 of them...
Before calling names you should consider the entirety of the argument and try not to generalize.
but $200 isn't that much. Slightly more than the game + 1 year subscription/station cash and one year is not much of a risk if the game is worth playing.
I flat out refuse to buy Founders packs or Collectors Editions of any game. Especially today with so many MMOs sucking and/or failing. In the end, what's the point? You get this box of stuff that is cool for a couple months, then it ends up in some closet. The digital rewards are usually only cool for a short time as well.
Now what I have done is invest this kind of money into a kickstarter, but for me that is different. I feel more like I'm supporting a project that might not otherwise exist without supporters like me. It's not the same as buying some junk pack from a AAA publisher and getting a lifetime sub for a game I likely won't be playing 3 months later.
EQ Next will earn money from me on merit, if at all. If it's such a great game that I end up spending far more than $200 over the time I play it, then good for them, AND me.
A sure sign that you are in an old, dying paradigm/mindset, is when you are scared of new ideas and new technology. Don't feel bad. The world is moving on without you, and you are welcome to yell "Get Off My Lawn!" all you want while it happens. You cannot, however, stop an idea whose time has come.
After SWTOR, I won't be pre-ordering anything, nor get sucked into the whole deluxe / collector's edition anything until I see the release version of games.
EAWare broke me of that.
Now, if EQN proves to be a good game, and the lifetime offer is there a month after, sure I'd drop a couple bills for it.
Never been tempted in the past and I'm not going to be tempted on a future game that I know practically nothing about.I have had no regrets passing up such offers in the past.
Not if i want the game to survive, after 13 month's they no longer "make" money off of the lifetime sub. Sure it seem's great at the beginning, but after awhile the game will probably end up going F2P because of it. If they can't keep up the revenue, well look at Lotro.
in a heartbeat, I have spent well over 200 on EQ, and EQ2, I bought TSW 200 pack and was more then happy, still am.
Give me 500 station points per month, and early beta access and I will donate 200 easily. I see this as my next long term game, and expect to at least play a yr and a half, so I am just paying my sub upfront, and never have to worry about the cash shop
200$ would be an absolute bargain, knowing you are looking at at least a dozen expansions during its life, and that would already be paid for
after seeing the game i could see spending 100, but not 200.

how is it for life, it allows you to play it for life, without actually commiting monthly.
If you have played a game for 1 yr consecutively, you have spent 200$ with sub+box. I know ill spend at least 1 yr in EQN, so its about value, ESPECIALLY if I can earn station cash as well for future expansions would be covered
i am still kicking myself for not getting it for LOTRO at launch since i did spend over 200 on sub for that game over the years.
if eqn is launching freemium though, i would have to look at the "ye olde matrix" to see what the benefitsof the sub are. if they are worth the price then i'd certainly consider it. maybe if there is a "free gold month" with purchase of the client then i'll play out the gold month, then try a month no sub, then compare and see if the 200 payment blob is worth it.

I guess that's a valid point. My problem is that these kind of founder packs have to be pre-purchased, and I've been burned on pre-purchases before. It generally takes me a few months to tell if I'm going to like a game enough to stick with it long term. I suppose I might buy a lifetime sub for a game I have already established I like that much, but not as a pre-purchase
SOE has never done a lifetime founders pack, nor ever will. It's just not what they like to do. And from experience, every game that had these lifetime founder packs usually go free to play before you would have made up the difference.
Neverwinter is the last founder's pack/pre-order I'll do for an MMO. Especially now since there are plenty of games out there that one can play to pass time.
And I never do lifetime subs... ever as no game has yet to warrant it.

depends on the quality of the game

Nope.
And they'll never give away as much as you'd like in your example, especially the monthly station cash.
