^ I thought this was due to problems with overflow servers not syncing right, not culling.
There were no overflow servers in WvW ever - there were queues of 4 hour plus long.
The problem you are describing was getting the party members in the same overflow together and the "joining party member" command not working. That was fixed quickly.

Ok! Thats right. I just remember the problems at release in the PvE area, I didn't know it didn't effect WvWvW, but that makes sense since it is a separate area.
Death is nothing to us, since when we are, Death has not come, and when death has come, we are not.
shame gw2 is a pointless game, it cud be so good if they changed pvp,
but o well, ill never play it again
I never saw a point to PvP but killing other players, and even then GW2 offers a bit more with WvW. Maybe I missed something. If you mean SPvP, you're probably right.
Originally posted by MrSalty people who quit ,who log back in for 10 minutes to see the game is still trash doesnt mean the population is growing.
Shouldn't they be playing game they actually enjoy if they know the game is trash or did it turn into an obsessive way of thinking up ways to bash it on forums?
My question is why would you buy a game, play it and find out you don't like it, merely to log back in for 10 minutes. I'm sure there are thousands of people doing this all the time, and that is why it looks like the population is increasing! /sarcasm
I think the population is increasing, at least it is from my point of view. The Living Story keeps getting better imho, and that may be a small part of why. Just overall, the game is fascinating, and there is always something different to do. If players that are on the fence about playing it can just brake away from the quest chain mentality, and explore I believe they will understand it and enjoy it more.
And don't forget the process of installing.. do they use all that time to download it, reinstall and log in just for 10 minutes? Or do you keep it installed just to log in for 10 minutes? Lmao, either way, talk about questionable.
Also I agree.. apparently "don't play this like WoW" isn't an acceptable excuse, the game must be crappy and confusing and you will deal!! But honestly playing it the way you said brings out the potential in the game. It's very no-rails and that's how I like it. Very fun.
My wife and I, and many from our guild in lots of games do as well. We all played it, hated it, and still log in from time to time to see if it s better. We probably will for a long time. I m sure a lot of people do this. Just because we hate it now, doesn t mean it can t improve. On that note, the world is in no way as busy as it was from release to 3 months after. No way in hell is it still growing.
I'm sure folks do. But it wouldn't be enough to make the population rise so much they need to raise the server cap, or even make a server fluctuate enough that it would make a difference.
To be honest, and this is not intended towards you, but logging into anything for 10 minutes to see if it is better is rather pointless imho. /shrug
I don t agree at all. Theres many games that have improved over time. GW2 B2P model makes it easier for people to check back and see. Not many people will pay a sub to check. That said, I am willing to bet theres a lot more then you think that do what we do.
My wife and I do exactly what you guys do. We want to like the game. The world is really well done. The only other game that comes close is Final Fantasy 14, which is our new home. We still have GW2 installed in hopes that it adapts into something with more of a sense of longevity. Hard drive space is cheap and it is B2P, so why wouldn't more people take that approach?
I think the reason I responded was that Mrsalty had mentioned that the game has more players in it just from people logging in and out. That makes no sense because I can see folks playing and they are not logging in and then out. /shrug
The sub-thread got a bit side tracked with the idea that logging into a game for 10 minutes to see if it had changed was a bit strange to me. Anything I try a second, third, or even forth time I give it a real try. 10 minutes isn't enough to really look at anything and judge a good or bad change.
I understand how some people think though, I was and still am like them in most games. I was attached to the notion you have to clear out an area of all tasks ie. quest chains, before moving onto the next. That was how I was trained ever since EQ and WoW. In GW2 I found that doing something until I feel like moving on works best for me. PvE gets slow I go sPvP, or maybe do the living/personal stories. I rarely stay in the same zone when I do PvE, I go from one racial area to the next so it doesn't seem like a burden to clear an area. But, I'm not trying to tell anyone how to play, it's just what I do and it works great for me. Maybe next time you and the wife login you can try my method. You paid for the games, it can't hurt!
I realized a long time ago it probably isn't for me and my wife. She is a hard core raider and I am her support guy. As much as the gameplay isn't for me, I do log in quite often just to look at the world. I love the art and world design. It is above and beyond most every MMO game. Like I said, only FF14 comes close in my book.

I actually sat through and read all 28 pages and i must say i've had many a laugh, truly thank you all for the vast amounts of entertainment.
Especially to the people who posted and continue to post screenshots as if thats evidence supporting their side of the argument.
The only ones that posted here that had any semblance of common sense and use of logic are the people who understand that no one can say for certain if there has been an increase or decrease of players due to lack of information.
Even the people trying to parade the Quarterly numbers for BOTH sides skew the information towards their own side simply due to the fact that the sale numbers include BOTH box sales and cash shop sales. There is 0 way for us as regular consumers to know how much of their current quarterly earnings are due to box sales and how much are from people just buying from cash shop.
Due to the above facts, there is no way to infer one way or the other if they are losing players or gaining players.
It doesn't matter if you take a million screenshots at this or that hour to show that in 1 specific spot in the game there's a bunch of players around(also i'd like to note i enjoy that most of those screenshots taken to prove alot of players were taken during events, near a new patch drop, or at a major DE, i see what you guys did there).
Likewise, the same goes for the opposite, it doesn't matter if you take a million screenshots at Lion's Arch showing it bare and empty at this or that hour. There are alot of factors that go into play with how many people are on in a particular area at a particular time, and can even be skewed in the graphic options menu.

Well, while I mostly agree with you, I'll say the screenshots do show that the people who post 'help I'm playing the game on (insert popular server here) and can't find anybody just simply don't know where to look, or didn't understand that culling was hiding a lot of the people (Like in Lion's Arch)
If you follow where the money is, you can find lots of people.
Whether or not the population is higher or lower, there are enough people playing in the top servers to push areas into overflow fairly consistently.

While it is true screenshots prove little, they can be used to deny silly hyperbole.
You say that many events were take after a new patch drop - patches drop every 2 weeks. It will always be close to patch drop.
It will always be during events.
You also point that that many of the screenshots were taken at a major DE. Do you expect people to be sitting in a place where there is nothing happening?
The entire point of the Dynamic Event system is to bring players together at those exact points so they can play together.
It has been said before and most GW2 players know this, the most popular areas are Queensdale (human starter area), Kessex Hills (big confluence from humans, asura and sylvari), Gendarren Fields (connects the west and the east of the world to LA), Bloodtide coast and Sparkfly Fen are decently populated with their own world meta events and lead south into Orr. Mount Maelstrom and Orr (especially Malchor's Leap and Cursed Shore) can vary from decently populated to heavily populated.
These areas are also the most linear. The Shiverpeaks are not very popular and Ascalon is completely non linear with the 30-40 level area being accessible from either Divinity's Reach (yeah the human capital city on the other side of the world) or from a level 40-50 area.
Although with the new champion loot changes the popularity of places might shift - Frostegorge sound is way active.
You also claim that most screen shots are taken at specific hours - I'll talk for myself only but I mostly play between 17:30 and 24:00 since that is when I've free time to play it, and I bet most people will share those times.
The screenshots only serve to shut down wild global accusations.
The real perception that population has been increasing comes from the individual experience every player has from continually playing.
The game started really population heavy (not only there was tons of people they were all in the same areas) it dropped sharply from October 2012-December 2012 and then started to rebound. That was the player perception and Arenanet confirmed it.
And currently the players feel it is increasing again. It might be or it might just be the illusion caused by Arenanet attracting the attention of players into specific areas that every active player will want to be in.
Lastly, one has to understand that even the zones are so big that a player that isn't rushing or jumping around the world, can and will spend several play sessions in the same zone.

PvP for PvP challenge not some stupid reward that creates an ever struggle to get gear only to have to do it again with an update that brings ever higher overpowered crap that imbalances the entire game. This is one of the things they did right and WvWvW is jumping with a lot of people actually capable of strategy. When we face a server filled with old style PvP zergs we steamroll them because they don't know basic go style strategy. Really starting to love those that think they can just grab and go right away when we have a large amount of people in our alliance and get more than 3 large groups going. We own the maps and they cant get out of their own starting areas.

Gw2 launch with 80k hours played. Now it's at it's lowest point this week with 5k. The population is not growing. There is still good number of players though.
Yeah the zones are packed, especially with the new events. I was in overflow for most of the night yesterday on my server. Its nice to see people out and about doing their thing but on the flip side it adds to some issues particularly with the clockwork event. Apparently if you enter the event zone after a certain window of time and are in overflow, you miss out on the event all together in that zone.
That happened to me in the Fireheart Rise last night. Bit of a bummer but a small price to pay I suppose.

When GW2 launched LoL had 100K hours played now is at 70K hours played, WoW had 50K hours played and now has 11K hours played.
More in January 2012 WoW had 100K hours played and during MOP launched it had 75K hours played.

XFire is dying so comparing hours alone form different times mean nothing.

I was sure you would miss the point I was trying to make, and you did not fail.
The idea was to try to tell you to spend more time on forums of games you enjoy instead of posting worthless numbers pulled out of unreliable third party websites just to bash games you dislike. There's absolutely no proof of the game not growing in those numbers from xfire, and I'm sure that deep within yourself, you know it too.
I was suggesting something similar to what I am doing, actually. Don't you think that it's pleasant not having me being almost every day on the AoW forums bashing the game? I would have hoped the courtesy to be returned... I was wrong, obviously. Almost one year after GW2 release, you're still here bashing the game with imaginary "facts" and numbers.
It's what he does. The fact that they just recently had to increase the server population caps yet again probably doesn't mean anything, you know?
