Your points are all based on opinion and playstyle...nothing that really would prevent anyone from playing this game.
I am a RPG/Sandbox fan...I find Rift...ridiculously boring...even or free its not worth my time. FFXIV for me is refreshing, the world is beautiful, animations great ability to play easily with my console controller (pc) even better. Questing seems to interest me so on. I frankly thing ARR is the best MMO of 2013 so far...i mean what else this year...hell even last is relatively good?
If you're patience is tested by the opening cutscene's and text bubbles...then I am afraid you have ADD either that or you dont care for the RPG in MMO's and just enjoy the grind or competitive aspects, which is fine but dont shit on a game because its not for you.
I get that some people wont like this game, just like I cant stand Rift, but thats the beauty of gaming...there is one game for everyone.
Im bored by rift right now too, dont get me wrong. Its f2p model is really quite impressive though and it just surpises me how much it stacks up to these mmos without having to spend a cent.
And I dont think im really shitting on it that badly lol just calling a spade a spade.
Cutscenes need to go from the genre...talk about a bore and waste of time......These devs and their desire to entertain the players is really getting old....Make a great game and we will be entertained.
People who complain about the lack/ease of PvP in a PvE game make me feel like I'm sitting in a pizza parlor, and some jackass in the table next to me is screaming "What do you MEAN you don't have hotdogs?!?!". Fail logic is fail.
There are SEVERAL PvP centric mmos out there right now. If PvP is your thing, then go play them. Stop shoving PvP down our throats, which inevitably leads to the nerf/buff cycle as people who THINK they can PvP whine after getting beat by someone of a different class that was better than they are.
This game offers the best crafting and gathering systems I've played since SWG. I can definitely understand if thats not your cup of tea. But for players like myself, its home sweet home.
Say what? Could you please explain what makes it so great let alone as good as SWG? I worked my butt off to get my first heal potion and it was the same potion I was getting with ease as I leveled up. I had over 20 of these potions already. To say the least this was a huge let down.

Make a Final Fantasy game that doesn't have cut scenes, how the hell would that work?
Personally, I'm on the fence about playing the game. I realize, however, that if I chose not to play, its not because its not a good game, it's because it's not my kind of game. What it does, it does well. Why do trolls feel the need to compare and criticize every game to high heaven? Why can't they just accept that it's not their type of game without having to compare it to another game and go to forums and be negative about it all?
I would be more inclined to accept dissatisfaction if a game is truly fubar. But in this particular case, FFXIV does what it does well. In other words, it represents its genre well. There is enough room in the MMO and MMORPG world to represent all genres. The need for some to be outwardly negative about every game that is released is not only annoying, it is harmful to the entire MMO/MMORPG genre.
If you don't like a game, don't play it. Just accept the fact that you will not like every game, and move on.
This game looked really great at first, the presentation to sell this game was excellent!
The the shit came out .. devs saying, hey guys, it's not like GW2, give us a try! OK, If a dev actually has to come forward and say that, then THERE IS SOMETHING WRONG!!
Getting a dev response isn't easy. If they give one then there is money on it.
It still seems like GW2 .. plus every great feature from EQ1 was watered down or removed. It is just another console converted to PC game converted back to console MMORPG... dumbed down to the lowest possible value, but just high enough to get some sales.
MEH!
There are plenty of nice features like destructible worlds and (amen) procedural worlds ... but at what cost? stupid no-brain combat mechanics, and gameplay that a 5 year old can play? /damn .. very disappointed.
You're on the wrong forum. How did you manage that? Let me show you where you should be.
OP. I always use TERA as an example of anything an mmo company should never do.
Yeah the combat was reticle based, but that doesnt make the game any better. Tera has zero variety of content, Lower graphic quality, and less polished than FF14. If you played both you can clearly notice that even still on beta FF was more polished than TERA and offers more content than TERA to this day.
FF14 its a traditional mmo. It does not innovate in any way, and its still missing important game features. But what it does, it does it very well. Also there is Coliseum PvP if i am not mistaken, but i dont do pvp so i didnt bother asking for it in game. And it offers a lot more varied content than Tera which limited players to 1 dungeon per level bracket, non stop BAM grind, and horrible Lineage 2-like quest grind, and the combat isnt very good either.
EDIT: to answer the title of the thread. FF14 offers nothing new. But it offers a lot of already known (and varied) things to do.
Lineage 2 like quest grind? You have no idea how much those words don't go together. Lineage 2 has never been a quest based game. Its always has and always will be an old school Korean mob grinder.
This game offers the best crafting and gathering systems I've played since SWG. I can definitely understand if thats not your cup of tea. But for players like myself, its home sweet home.

Low level, low quality items.
Later on, you have an opportunity to improve the mats and the crafting process to create higher quality items. the stuff you are crafting is for low level repetition to get XP.
GW2 had a giant drop off, because lets be honest the games story was meh at best its has no actual substance to it and its pvp isn't even good.
If final fantasy were to fail at the very least it has a nice story to hold me till whatever thats broken is fixed. Gw2 was just a painful dynamic event spam.
I might not exactly play this game when it launches but I'm still glad it doesn't cater to PVP. Firstly there seems to be some upcoming PvP content for it but for once, let a PVE game be PVE if it wants to be.
i wish i'd have taken screenies of all the people in the aftermath of SWTOR wailing and gnashing teeth over the voice overs. why voiceovers, why not spend voiceover money on other content, we dont like voiceovers, they're for SPRPG, etc etc etc. now i read this thread full of folks complaining no voiceovers.
we mmo players are a complainy bunch arent we.
also, ff games arent really pvp games. in ff11 there was only ballista and it certainly was not a big deal in the game. to me complaining about no pvp is kinda missing the point of ff14, it would be like me complaining no twitch combat in civilization 5.
RIP Ribbitribbitt you are missed, kid.

I think what they are doing is a good idea, make a damn good PvE game, THEN make a damn good PvP game. Doing both at the same time never works.

It's a wonder devs don't just go "Well fuck it then I don't know what the hell they want. Screw you guys, I'm going home"

I'm not sure how you know this with a cap. Anyway, I don't want a crafting system and or leveling system that is all about end game. I want to be engaged in the leveling process of my combat and crafting character as I level. I might as well go back to Wow if its all about end game.
First. This is beta and yes there is PvP. Second - Its beta and we only get level 20 content third - Its beta fourth - Its Beta Fifth - Its beta
cant wait for game to go full release so the 'beta card' cant be used anymore. then what is everybody gonna blame it on then
This x100.
Get real people. The game launches in less than 10 days. Early access is a week from now. This is not a beta, it's a glorified prelaunch / free preview.
And as such it will be enjoyed by some, and not enjoyed by others.
Just like every single MMO ever listed on this site, or any that will be listed in the future.
As it stands, even with the issues, it's receiving a highly positive response. The negativity has been relatively low around it, especially compared to other high-profile releases I've seen.
The problem isn't that some won't like the game. The problem is when some believe their dislike of the game is somehow an unimpeachable indictment of it.
In reality, it's just individuals not liking a game.
I'll assume this has probably already been said, didn't feel like reading through pages and pages, but in case it wasn't this game is based around the Final Fantasy franchise. The point in that series has always been story above just about everything else. In FFXIV's case that means they didn't spend money on VO's for all dialogue (that takes a HUGE part of a budget to get quality work, and crappy work is worse than not adding VO's at all) and the core of the game is just a standard MMORPG experience. Take it or leave it, it never claimed to be revolutionary.

Not always. In fact, IMHO what you are describing is the exception in most cases, except the rare few.
There is a difference between posters posting threads with constructive negative criticism about why they don't like a game and those who are consciously throwing around lies and misrepresentations of a game, and doing so with obvious malicious intent.
I agree with you in that constructive criticism is always good. That is not what goes on on this and most game forums. Its a culture in a product cycle unrivaled by any other. It has gotten to a point where it is simply ugly and out of control.

Its a Final Fantasy fans and a Raiders game mainly and for people who just want a very traditional mmorpg. It would do fine even if wasnt going to have any form of PvP just like FF11 which is still P2P and the PvP in that was more of a mini-game than something full blown like WoW or Warhammer.
To me the entire expeirence was really boring and at times quite frusturating. The character creation is cool, but the game tanks rapidly from that point on. The opening cut scene riding the damn wagon was a test of my patience. My finger was sore within minutes from clicking through bubbles of text. A 2013 AAA mmo with a TON of cut scenes and no voice overs. Dont get me wrong I dont give 2 shits about cut scenes and story/lore but if your going to take the time and have us watch a cut scene for the love of god toss some bloody voices in there.
Got my first quest to kill some squirrels and ladybugs, while being pretty juvenile and unispring I was just happy to fire my damn bow at anything. Then to see the combats lightning fast 2.5s global cooldown. Was very thrilled when I hit my chacter tab and was able to see all the spells I was going to get for the rest of the game. Then I realized that there was no real talent points at all. When it comes down to it almost no character progression at all ... nothing to make me different then the other 9000 archers killinig ladybugs.
No pvp at all for me to attempt. Serious mistake not having that ready for a relaunch.
The game did have some pretty graphics and was VERY solid with almost no lag with a ton of players on.
Essentially though:
-painfull uninspired questing/cut scenes
-ultra slow and uninspired combat
-pvp?!???
Dont see how this one can survive. Tera is probably equally pretty and polished with a MUCH cooler combat system. Tera made the same mistake of releasing without a proper battleground and I think it did the game some serious harm. VERY poor summer for mmo and pc game releases. People are just REALLY bored. Hell im bored. At the end of the day f2p rift is a much better choice for this type of mmo.
I doubt this game will survive long if its going to be sub based .
It's all going to come down to how much end game it has to be honest . The levelling is quite fast .
If you are bored with this MMO then you will be bored with every MMO ever made.
I wouldn't say tera has a better combat system imo. What class did you play ?
However the cut scenes are really not my cup of tea . I want to play the game not watch some story which I don't care about.
Maybe if I was a FF fanboy I would enjoy watching them .
Some things that might make this game more fun .. Get rid of the map . All I do is run around looking at the damn map lol. The awesome graphics are useless if I am looking at a 2d map to play game .
If I actually had to explore the game Im sure it would be more fun even tho it would be harder. Right now I click open map and watch a triangle move towards the objective .
Also this game reminds me of EQ2 ALOT . it has so many god damn small zones . RIFT and WOW don't appear to have this many zones . Loading screen everytime I zone into a new area is so old school. My PC has enough RAM to hold the entire game in memory so Im sure they made it suck because of consoles .
This game offers the best crafting and gathering systems I've played since SWG. I can definitely understand if thats not your cup of tea. But for players like myself, its home sweet home.

Name an MMORPG's crafting system that dd not require one to grind away with low level items, before being able to craft higher items? This is exactly what I mean by creating negative criticism where it is unwarranted.

This game needs 400k subs to sustain, for as long as they want. FFXI is still running P2P to date for 11 years and its an extremely niche game, this will go way farther considering they will make more than 400k subs in japan Alone and it can appeal to more than FFXI did.
As for the cut scenes, I can respect its not your cup of tea but any final fantasy MMO without cut scenes isn't a final fantasy mmo, and as Michael Byrne of gamebreaker tv put it "This game is not being marketed to the general populace, but more towards final fantasy fans, and final fantasy mmo fans.
