I for one wish the game was designed to entice as many peopel as possible. If you love the Final Fantasy IP then you should want it to prosper. Sadly, in it's current state I do not see that as going to happen (at least not in the States)..
And it is not because of it's challenge level (because....hell..it's not even challenging.)...but because of many many other factors.
You can keep trying to put words into the so-called "nay-sayers" mouth but it won't be the honest truth.

FFXI is still alive and well and it is still P2P. I think FFXIV will be just fine, but I do thank you for your concern.
First. This is beta and yes there is PvP. Second - Its beta and we only get level 20 content third - Its beta fourth - Its Beta Fifth - Its beta
the main thing is this is a realm reborn of a game they made 2 years ago, final fantasy 14.
while it seems they improved a moderate amount over the horror that was, they were still lazy on the major things.
they skipped voice acting because they didnt want to voice in 12+ languages (even swtor did this, its what makes swtors story awesome for just about anyone, they talk in your language as you play) and oped for text only everything.
2.5s global is rediculous, most peoples attention span is between 1/1000th and 1/10000000th of a second, 1s global is the max youll get away with.

And I am not trying to be a smartass here. I am not trying to bad mouth this game. I am truly disappointed that I will not be playing it.
I wanted VERY MUCH to fall in love with it. After getting through all the tutorial bits and finding my way around I couldn't help but feel a bit of 'this is so old school! awesome!' feelings. But my honest...hasn't been wrong yet..opinion...this will survive but thrive much more in the East.
At the very least a total rewrite of most of the quests. I would be as pleased as punch if they wrote directions or hints to directions in the quest dialog instead of giving you a quest tracker. Instead allowing you to 'draw' notes on the map based on what you might interpret from the directions given.

Lucrecia, I can't help but feel the sincerity in your post. Your feelings are not without merit. I may not play the game myself. Even if I do, I know I won't last because i never do. I have never played a game for more than a couple of months. The fact of the matter is though, that I am not so certain that the gloom and doom is necessary for this title. It's FFXIV. It is not meant to appeal to the masses. I think that much is pretty much obvious. It is what it is. There really is no need to drag it through the mud, is there?
What you are describing OP is what I see as the polar opposite of what I believe MMORPG's should be. You see I grew up playing PnP roleplaying games where reading and story are paramount to the immersion in the world you're playing in. And to me running around in circles spamming buttons as fast as you can because there is no cooldown doesn't equal a fun combat style, I find that boring where strategy is replaced with whoever can hit the most buttons in under a minute.
For me I'm thoroughly enjoying my time in FFXIV ARR where I haven't felt this way about a game since vanilla WoW.
Ultimately there are plenty of games around these days so I'm sure you will find something more to your style of play and it's a good thing that not all games are of the same mold because now there are many play styles that are catered for.
I kept seeing people complaining about cooldown times if it is to slow for you pick a faster class also once you start running dungeons you begin acquiring gear that reduces global cool down by the end of phase 3 my cool down was probably only 30% of what it was originally. A friend in game started out as a gladiator and complained a few times before finally switching to a different class. She eventually started to Main as an archer and had no complaints after that, a warning though just skip Longbows if you do try one out they're to slow for the tiny bit of damage they add and almost always have lower DPS than the shortbow that precedes it.
Also in regards to no skill points you must not have noticed you begin obtaining skill points around level 10 there is no pop up prompting you to use them every few levels you have to go under your character screen and apply them there.
Also PVP will be added after launch believe we have been told with patch 2.40.
Now Voice acting there is some voice acting for most of the major cut scenes but in general I also felt it was lacking when we were told Voice acting would be added I expected there to be a lot more though honestly were not really missing out on much the English Voice acting is really mediocre I ending up turning the Japanese Dialogue on after hearing Kan-E-Senna she sounds far to mature for someone who is supposed to be an ageless child, lol, isn't she physically supposed to be 16 or something? Also quite a few of them simply sounded like they were reading words off of a page instead of actually getting in to their dialogue.
Also to anyone who has only tried the phase 4 open beta the game does not truly pick up until around level 26+ or so when you stop being guided by the main questline and start gaining access to the non-quest dungeons. Also I feel the game at least warrants a sub to finish out the quest line I really hope we gain access to the Garlean empire at some point.
Yay! I for one am thrilled this game is not mainstream, not for everyone and pay 2 own and pay to play. I think the entire experience would be ruined for me if it was simplified and streamlined and sped up to make it like every other new game out there.

No need at all. I highlighted some of my favorite things as well as the things that is keeping this game at a distance from me and probably, for the same reasons, others.
This is more like my mourning for a game that just did not mesh with my playstyle...I guess FFXII will be my 'Final' fantasy despite my hopes that this one would return me to the IP that I had grown so attatched to since childhood. I guess I value game experience over IP loyalty afterall.

Most games nowadays, not only have quest trackers ... but they have little arrows or sparkles on the ground leading you to the quest. You say you want the best for this game, yet you make a suggestion to do away with quest trackers? Do you really think your suggestion would have been better for this game? Think about this for a second. If you think there is crying about quest trackers now, this is a drop in the water compared to the tsunami you would have heard about if the quests had no quest trackers or visual indicators helping players get to their points of destination.

This is where you made an incorrect assumption. This game is meant to correct a Japanese mistake. They don't do things like we do in the West. This game is to right a wrong and to save face. This game is about the fact that SE is admitting to dishonoring it's loyal fans. It was never created with the intent to "entice as many people as possible" with the next best game. This game is an apology to FF fans. It will NEVER be anything that the recent string of MMOs are or have become. SE has already said they'll pull the plug on the servers before that happens. Goring F2P would be an admission to failure and SE cannot have that with this game. It's far better for them to plug along with a modest player base than to turn this particular title into a cash grab. That would lose face.
ayep. agree with OP and all those who are somehow defending the title are just blind fans of series.
there is nothing in this game that actually could carry you investing and drowning countless of hours in it.
I haven't really seen anyone blinding defending, I see varying opinions yes.
Chocobo raising, earning your house, customizing your house, raiding, PvPing, AF quests, primals, NM fates, crafting whatever high level stuff they have planned, fishing, hamlet defense, Grand Company stuff, Guildhests, Levequests, other stuff I'm probably forgetting, but ya this game has nothing to put hours into.

..>Well...what can I say...my dreams for a perfect MMORPG does not equal a viable game in the current community zeitgeist. This is not an 'I stand corrected'...this is a 'I know what I was saying..I recognize the conflicts...however this would have still been my preference.'

I've actually seen more bandwagon hate than fanning the series. Even one says they'll be waiting for EQNext, that already has a series of problems that will be hurting new and old coming to that world. So we'll be complaining about the first five levels of that next year when we get the actual game beta.

Also...there is an obvious difference between wanting a game to succeed but having personal preferences that do not line up with the communities and a person who is glad the game will not make mainstream so that they can enjoy it themselves and feel somehow unique, special (read: Hipster).
However the cut scenes are really not my cup of tea . I want to play the game not watch some story which I don't care about.
Maybe if I was a FF fanboy I would enjoy watching them .
Well, it is a MMORPG, and RPG's usually have stories in them. I appreciate the amount of effort that SE puts into the RPG part of the genre. If I didn't like the story element I'd probably just play an FPS or a MOBA.
True that but if they had some voice acting then I wouldn't have to read a wall of text . Well I don't read the wall of text I click through it and watch a video that makes no sense because Im too lazy to read and expect voice acting .
Some cutscenes have voice acting and those are pretty decent . Just seems like they haven't finished the game or ran out of money ?
Originally posted by tatnoroll I don't know why so many people like to bash this game. It's not a bad game in fact this beta is better than anything I'm playing right now.
Most people including myself haven't been passed level 15 so its hard to really judge the entire game on the newbie zones alone .
I think this is what the problem with every MMO that's come out since WoW (except a few). The developers all want to make MMOs exciting, fast-paced, and rewarding. Truth is, a real MMO is none of those things.
MMOs are not always exciting, there are lulls in the action. If you want to have excitement 24/7/365, MMOs aren't for you, just stop playing them. There are times when you go up against something truly challenging and win that are exciting, but if you expect kill 10 rats to be exciting, then you're already set up for failure at MMOs.
MMOs are not fast-paced. They're slow, grindy games that take years to master everything. Recent games are all about, "Get to max level in 3-4 days, then go to endgame". This isn't what an MMO is about. MMOs are all about the journey of your character, not the endgame. Progessing through things like crafting, leveling, and the overall game should be done slowly and enjoy the journey. If you expect to level every 30 seconds, then you're already set up for failure at MMOs.
MMOs are not rewarding, in the sense that other genres are anyways. If you want to have an "omg I can't believe that just happened" moment everyday, then you're not going to be happy. MMOs are the quintissential delayed gratification of the gaming industry. If you want everything fast and now, then you're already set up for failure at MMOs.
I've been saying this for years. The problem with MMOs isn't the games or developers, it's the community as a whole. You demanded games that were exciting all the time. You demanded games that were fast-paced. You demanded games that rewarded you for breathing, walking, and looking blankly in a corner of a pub. Therefore we all got these games that were no longer MMOs, but a perverse amalgamation we have had over the last 7-8 years.
I'm glad that FFXIV does not follow this trend. I'm glad that it instead goes with slower paced combat, slower paced leveling, and long drawn out cut scenes. If you would actually stop to read the text and learn the story, it is actually quite engaging. I'm glad that FFXIV doesn't reward you but just a small upgrade in gear everytime, which eventually turns into you being undergeared in later stages. I'm glad that I don't have my heart racing all the time, but when a big boss comes up, it actually stands out, since I just got done with a long lull of excitement.
Thanks SE for redoing this game, and making it what it should've been in the first place. Great job, and I love it.
However the cut scenes are really not my cup of tea . I want to play the game not watch some story which I don't care about.

They are only voicing the main story line. But I suppose they could of bloated the client and threw down a shit-ton of money to voice everything like SWTOR did just so the lazy don't have to read (ffs what's the world come to when reading is bad). But I am glad they didn't.

*laughs*

I assumed nothing. No assumptions were made. What is your point? I made a simple, logical sentiment.
Most people including myself haven't been passed level 15 so its hard to really judge the entire game on the newbie zones alone .
At least the graphics are really good .
They are only voicing the main story line. But I suppose they could of bloated the client and threw down a shit-ton of money to voice everything like SWTOR did just so the lazy don't have to read (ffs what's the world come to when reading is bad). But I am glad they didn't.
