Wow! What a lengthly thread about apparently nothing at all. Guild Wars is an MMORPG and that's all there is to it. Somebody needs to define MMORPG and stick it in a dictionary so ppl don't spend their time arguing and incorporating philosophy to establish ... well ... nothing at all.

yeah ill have to agree on that, some of these cheap games have twisted the actual meaning of an mmorpg.

There is no cure for stupidity. if people buy games because of the 'MMORPG' label then they are idiots, or at least have more money than sense. If you actually read what arena.net have posted on their website, you'll see that they are in no doubt that the label of MMORPG doesn't illustrate what GW is perfectly (note that this doesn't mean they are saying it isn't a MMORPG).

PvE in general is pretty lame, if you think long and hard about it. You are spending your time beating a severely gimped AI that would lose to a well trained monkey. Best not to think too long and hard why you are wasting time playing games in general actually...

finally another person besides of few of us that actually did some reasearch before flamming up a fourm..
I have firmly established why Guild Wars is not a MMORPG. I have firmly established my point of view on the subject of MMORPGs. The mere fact that you replied to this post means I have established something.
Ive played several MMORPG's and i also play this as a MMORPG although its quite different, No auction house, no real crafting and so on, but still Party's, RPG feeling, Online, PVP and for the first time ive ever seen it in a MMORPG, Cut scenes, which i got real adicted too, very nice game, very good pvp, beats WOW in a heartbeat, cool story, cool game
I agree that Guild Wars is not a traditional MMORPG, it seems to be in its own class of online RPG. It is massively multiplayer in that you can meet everyone on the game in cities without server barriers but the quests/cooperative missions are instanced with just 4 players making it as "massively multiplayer" as DOOM 1 outside the cities.
This has its own benefits and drawbacks but the point is that GW is its own type of RPG and technically isn't an MMORPG-- whether it gets tossed off this site or not is up to the admins. I'm not sure where else it would go, or maybe it will start its own category and we'll have CMORPG.com someday.
ok cool... but guildwars deserves to be listed here.. even if you guys sayits not an mmorpg.. its on line anywat it's morpg... multiplayer online rpg.. without the massive... but still it pawns WoW on my idea.. my friend thinks WoW pawns GW and I respect that...
and if Diablo gets listed here, then so should Baldur's Gate.
And if Baldur's Gate gets listed here, then so should Star Wars: Battle of the Republic. And if SWBotR gets listed here, so should Rogue Spear. And on and on and on.
I think only Massively Online Role Playing Games should be listed here.
Hence, no Diablo (it's main game is solo and not online), no Baldur's Gate, no Star Wars, no Rogue Spear.
But really, I don't care. And neither should anyone else. Although this thread has more life than any other thread, the subject matter borders on retarded.
I will never read this whole thread, but I 've read the first few pages a while back. What it smells like to me is the controversy swirling around Guild Wars stems from the fact it's making more traditional MMOs look bad and thier fanboys can't deal with it. I know I'm soundling like a GW fanboy myself, but when I look at some of the other early looks and reader reviews, the only two negatives I see are:
1) A few network hiccups. Note the word few. (boo hoo)
2) This isn't an MMO! (with the inferred "how dare you compare this to my favorite MMO and point out how much better GW is")
I'm no industry expert, but I predict once press reviews roll in this thing is going to blow up like the 4th of July and take it's rightfull place as king of the hill. That's an opinion and I could be wrong. Time will tell. Based on what I've seen and read though, this game looks like it's is going to dominate across genres.
If only this had come out before WoW and MxO, I would've saved some money.

Now, i cant be arsed to read 12 pages of bullshit, but basically it boils down to this: MMORPG= MASSIVLEY MULTIPLAYER ONLINE ROLEPLAYER GAME Guild Wars: Massivley Multiplayer = yes Online = yes Roleplayer Game = yes
Yeah, I think everyone can agree its an MMORPG. The main difference being, as has been brought up, that it is a different way of going about the mmorpg. Instead of a massive world where you occasionally run into people who might have been in that 30 character raid you went on you'll be running into someone you actually talked to and played with on more then a "X class should start casting O now" level.
I think Instago main point of the initial post was that since GW is not a MMORPG, it should not be listed on MMORPG.com. This could have easily been addressed with a single response to the FAQ which outlines the requirements to be listed as a game on MMORPG.com. GuildWars meets all of these requirements and therefore is listed.
On the topic of "what is a MMORPG", I think the current and future Massively Multiplayer Online Games coming out are going to change what was traditionally thought of as meeting the strict definition of a traditional MMORPG. The changes we're seeing and will see will all be due to restrictions on today's and tomorrows technologies. Originally MMORPG's were released with differnet shard/servers to deal with the sheer numbers of people who would be playing. The next step in that evolution was to make a single world with instanced missions and area's of the world... The GW model actually makes the single world a small aspect of the game model and places 95% of the game on the instanced area's... From what I can gather, D&DO is following the same model as GW... There will be people who attempt to argue the technology restrictions with mentioning games such as EVE, however, what they need to realize is there's a significant difference in flexibility between EVE and traditional MMORPG's in regards to moveability of your character, or any other object in the game. What I mean by this is in a traditional MMORPG, you can have your character be running in any direction and immediately change direction on a dime in a split second, multiple times. This builds overhead for the amount of data to be sent/received to/from the server. In EVE, you "click and go" instead of "steering" the craft, which actually minimizes the data needed to be sent/received to/from the server. So here you are trading off the flexibility of movements for the ability to play on one single server.
Dark and Light is claiming they will have a single giant world with the controls and flexibility of traditional MMORPG's. I think in this case, they are banking on the size of the world being able to spread out the load to minimize the lag. My bet, though is if the world "size" doesn't spread out the player volume enough, we'll be seeing some rapid changes in how that model works as well.
I just don't think we're technically "there yet" to have a true MMORPG in the sense of one single world, with many, many players. So therefore we have instances to compensate for this. Does this make the game "not a MMORPG"? Nah, I don't think so. I think it's creative way to work around the current technical restrictions we face.
I agree with some of the posts and boy were their a lot of them, but come on guys they are just games. I did not know that Instago felt so passionately about MMORPG's. I think that is insane.
I for one agree with this site implementing GW its is just a different genre. Like you say Instago this is my opinion, but you contradict yourself for a total disregard of other's opinions. Then you go on rambling about the same topic that you posted earlier.
It seems that your opinion is the only opinion that matters, and that means mine does not, so I will end it here.

I bet if you went back to highschool and talked like this all of the kids even the stark trek nerds would beat the crap out of you! Probably even the teachers because you'd be correcting them all the time because they wouldn't speak perfectly right cause you hate on gw for not being a perfect definiton of an MMO! But mabey the perfect Definintion of MMO isn't so good now is it!!!

Yeah, the topic is idiotic, sure. Yes, lots of people here are huge nerds. But one question. If you're against nerdiness why are you on a "mmorpg"/computer game site????
Alkanphel, the point of arguing is to show why your opinion is 'better' than another opinion- if I simply go philosophical on the entire subject there would have never been any argument- hypocrisy is overrated and no two 'similar' examples are the same.
To the reader: instead of throwing insults and saying 'yeyah I agree with this dewd omgwtfpwn!' you should create your own opinion- don't be a follower, be a leader.
Name calling leads to the quick report and deletion of your post in addition to the possibility of negative actions taken towards your account.
