Your own disclaimer discredits most of your post. Thats kinda weird heh.
The question I must ask then is...are my observations inaccurate?
The issue comes about because you have "lost credibility".
Without credibility I could assume your observations are in fact not credible.
At this point your observations weather or not are valid, fail to be even considered.
When a known racist points out a problem with his or her hated race, do you listen, or even bother to find out if their observation is correct?
This is where your problem is.
That escalated rather quickly...
It's a philosophical quandary.
Either way, these are my observations and because of aforementioned reasons I just cannot stomach shelling out any amount of cash for a game I might/will quickly stray from only to go back to World of Warcraft.

Yeah, it's amazing that people still think all opinions are valid.
Why would I care to hear the opinion of some high school drop out on what I should do about a medical problem? Wouldn't I place a lot more value on the opinion of a practicing doctor?
And if my house is on fire, wouldn't I want the course of action to be determined by the opinion of the experienced Fire Chief on site with his Fire Fighter crew than the heckling neighbor who thought this was more interesting than Matlock?
Everyone is a critic I guess. However, very few people are certainly capable or qualified to offer up an acceptable critique.
And this is why I was torn with putting this in the general discussion threads versus the review section. I figured because of the layout it would instantly get flagged to be moved to the review section.
I do love your scenarios here though but I am not really trying to review the game. I am giving my obeservation and how they balance to that with my time in World of Warcraft so that the reader might draw a different conclusion that might bring about something I did not previously consider.
In the end: Someone had to pair up a WoW vs. FFARR post. Might as well be an MMORPG luminary like myself.
In conclusion, I hope you built some insight into what I am searching for in an MMORPG. Perhaps I am chasing the Lochness Monster but if a game came close to my personal preferences then I would give it a go. I hope someone can (respectfully) dismantle my claims that strike FFARR in such a dim light and encourages me to try this game because my old NES knows better than anyone that I absolutely love Final Fantasy games. I am just not convinced that they translate well to the MMORPG expectations.
Thank you all for reading!
The only dismantling you need is that a couple of weeks after release the servers are still jammed packed, many people have not been able to play in days to a week or more, they are still adding servers, and you can read all over various forums players excitement for FFARR. The fact that you are casting such a dim light on FFARR is really just a matter of personal preference, and in that regard you are most definitely in the minority. On the outside looking in, if you will. Your claims need no dismantling. FFARR is not for you. Write it off, and move on. It's really just that simple. I hope that was respectful enough for you.
I'd consider it more borderline passive aggressive that offers no substance.

It's been a soft spot with my partner and I. I think I'll devote more time than I actually do and I always fall back on WoW...always. I want this to not happen anymore.
Your problem is over a decade of playing WOW. You have the dreaded "WOW dark cloud" always hanging over your head. Every game you play, you compare it to WOW. You are stuck on WOW, and like a jilted lover, you just can't let it go. This is not healthy for you. If you really want to move on and begin enjoying other games, you need to make a proactive stance and put WOW behind you. This is nothing against WOW per se. It is more a case of being harmed by the long length of time playing one MMORPG. There are many others in your same situation. I am certain you have read their posts in every single MMORPG that is released. They compare, shoot down the newly released game without giving it a fair chance, and then grudginly admit they will be going back to their long love, even though that long love is abusing them mentally. You should not dismiss this advice lightly. If you think it through with an objective mind, you will find there is truth in what I speak.

What credibility is needed to offer an opinion on a game that you've tried? Besides taking the time to write a detailed impression of a game lends far more to a posters credibility than a disclaimer stating "this is just one opinion". Not to mention the attempts to discredit that opinion later in the thread (which does marvelously for ones own "credibility").
Agree..Disagree with the OP that's what forums are for...I as example disagree with the OP (in terms of the games polish, outside of server related issues). Yet I feel no need to attempt to discredit the OP's credibility because of that disagreement. Is this how all who do not conform will be treated?
For every minute you are angry , you lose 60 seconds of happiness."-Emerson
1) Innovation. Neither WoW or FF XIV are innotive, at least to a great deal. Both copy exiting designs and put their own twist to them. Both have two fundamental innovations. WoW with it's (mostly) seamless world and FF XIV by bringing cross platform MMORPG play between PC and Console on the same realms.
2) Farming Fates is not an exploit, it's one of the valid ways to level. Which is one area FF XiV is superior to WoW, as it offers more flexibly while levelling.
3) Character customisation. Since Blizzard dumbed down the talent trees, the only real difference between (let's say) a Warrior tank from another is their gear. While FF XIV allows for attributes to be customised and adding skills from other classes to ones build.
4) Allowing people to go AFK without a timeout may have been a pain during server capacity issues, but it's not an exploit.
5) Comabt isn't actually slow, or feel clunky. No more than a low level character does in WoW, or even a level 90 Rouge that gets most of its dps from auto attacks due to poor class design.
1. WoW brought GCD, working instances, automatic loot rolls, flight paths, raids, pvp with rewards and battlegrounds...
2. Fates aren't an exploit but don't act like they should be the way people level up in an MMO. It's skipping content is all it is. I don't see how ffarr has more flexibility through leveling as you can quest, dungeon, or pvp to level in wow(which FF doesn't even have......)
3. This point is hilarious. I hated the tree's being dumbed down but saying that most warrior tanks are going to have the same skills is a "no shit" type of deal. Same with druid, death knight, pally, and monk tanks. They take the tank abilities on their talent trees as they should...They are the tanks... Tanks in FF14 will be exactly the same way. Why would you take non tank abilities/stats if your group/guild depends on you to tank? How many classes in FFAAR can be tank dps or healer all in one class? Pretty sure wow demolishes ff14 in character customization. The multiple class thing is just a gimmick as there are only a few truely viable ways to build your characters between the jobs for each role.
5. Combat is slow no matter what you say. 2.5 is 2.5. Most characters in this game have 2-3 button rotations, which reminds me of the rogue you speak of.
1. Not touching it, but I would take a look at AO, EQ, and a myriad of other MMOs before preaching that doctrine.
2. Fates are used for gaining faction with your Grand Company, whereby you help your guild gain rank. It's not an exploit it is simply alternate experience which you are rewarded VERY well for. I would say almost better than the content.
3. I will concede that paladin 1 will have the same skills as paladin 2. But I think the aspect of the cross class mechanic that you are missing is that I can now equip abilities that make my survivability even greater. For instance, part of becoming a paladin is by leveling conjurer. If I bring my conjurer to 30 I get Cure II, Raise Dead, Protect, and Stoneskin. Making me a more powerful tank than someone who only leveled their conjurer to 15. Let's also say that I take pugilist to 15. Now I have another skill which raises my avoidance to damage.
Now I could see you saying "Well all of this should be in the same skill tree!". But I tend to think of it as picking several items from an ala carte menu and making my own mix. This, in my opinion sets this game apart from WoW.
5. There is a stat called skill speed in game. You boost this, and suddenly that 2.5 recast time is brought down to 2.3, or 2.0. They make you work for it, but you definitely see the difference as a DPS class. I just thought I would make you aware that this recast time is not fixed.
When it comes down to it, pick the game you enjoy.
I see myself playing FFXIV:ARR for a long time.
To me, WoW just seemed like one big instance coaster that I could not get off of.
I'm there with you on all of those points. I'm 50/22/20(jap server) on my main right now but I already feel that there won't be much character customization regardless. If you want to do well at a certain thing there will be a certain job set you will use. The extra abilities are just way more noticeable right now because not many people have had the time to grind them out.
The speed stat I am well aware of, but you have to gear/allocate specifically for it.
I'm most worried that anyone could say that its a better game than WoW in any regard. That is just ignorance.

Actually...somewhat right but mostly wrong.
I've propped many MMOs on pedadtels pre-their release. I was super hyped about TSW and then GW2. I compared them as well and it seemed at the time that they came out on top. Inevitably I fell back to WoW. I would like to think they were because of the reasons I listed above and not because I am in some strange domestic abusive relationship.

Those observations will be way more accurate once you actually PLAY the game. Give it a fair try and then decide. Only then your review will have more credibility.
Again, it's only 30 bucks, it's not a 200 dollars CE.

I usually try not to wade into the WoW waters. Simply because I don't have a lot of experience in that game. But I am glad we can "agree to disagree".
I was in the WoW Beta and leveled a dwarf cleric to max. But when release came, I just didn't feel the same about it. I think for me, I just didn't want to go through the same content over again. Which is indicative of any MMO (Final Fantasy not withstanding in some ways). Final Fantasy thinly disguises hunting logs and fates as something other than quests. But for some reason, I really don't mind it when it comes to leveling the alternate classes.
It is hard for me to pinpoint what I dislike about WoW. It's just a game that I don't find enjoyable.

I guess I am wondering why did you even bother creating a long winded, uninformed thread?First hand experience does not mean I am uninformed. Ill-Informed perhaps and if that is the case please do correct me! Well for starters, you made no mention of crafting, gathering, spirit bonding, materia, and how that drives the games economy, retainers and chocobo battle customization. Thats just off the top of my head. All of the things I mentioned are either missing completely from WoW or are vastly different and most of which are quite innovative.
But I think if you had mentioned those aspects, it would have hurt the overall point of your original post. So maybe that is why you either ignored them or lack the in game experience to comment.
Which brings me back to why bother with this thread when it is a quite narrow point of view with little experience. You must have known going in that there would be considerable backlash from people who know more about the game than you do. Hence your disclaimer which basically discredits most of what you wrote.

Reading your posts and playing it a while I'm pretty sure FFARR is far far away from being the game that will pull you from WoW and make you play it for years. It has NOTHING over WoW except modern graphics, which alone is non factor anyway (art style is far more important) when it comes to longetivity.

I know it's in the review section but at it's heart it really is not a review so I did not cover everything. I was never huge into the crafting/gathering scene so it would not be of any interest for me to give my point of view.
This isn't really a review and perhaps I should have added that in the disclaimer. I don't know what this is: An open source think tank revolving around my cry for help? ;D ..
But I figured if I put it in the general forums it would have simply been moved because it looks and almost reads like a review.

If you like WOW, there is no reason you shouldn't like FF:ARR. It does a lot of what WOW does, and more. I am not going to go into a long diatribe about the great things offered by FF:ARR. Let's just say it has that "something" that will keep it around for a long time. It has a friendly appeal, immersion, and depth. How can it not have depth when it allows one to do everything with one character. The character customization comes with time. This is an old school MMORPG. The grind is not in the levels. It is in the character customization. Imagine the pool of abilities that will be available to you once you have acquired all of the various jobs. This is when you have the potential to shine in building your own unique build.
Listen, I have a very active imagination. So perhaps that's what is required with this game. The key word with FF:ARR for me is depth. It has it by the load full, but only if you can think outside the box. I have also become a huge fan of Yoshi P. IMHO, he is probably the best MMORPG Dev on the planet. With his leadership and direction, if FF:ARR isn't already one of the better MMORPG's on the market, it definitely has the potential to be in time. You can free yourself from your addiction to WOW. I have faith in you.

As with most tenured MMO's WoW had a certain spark to it at the start. The difficulty of the content (blizz says less than 2% of wow players saw naxx in vanilla) and the way pvp ranking worked lent to a virtual world full of hungry people. Gated content used to be a staple of an MMO. Seeing someone who was more badass than you was a huge motivation for lots of people.

... Because the OP is struggling in an attempting to justify leaving WOW for FF:ARR. Only by thinking it out loud, via a forum post, and receiving critical input from others, can this be confirmed. It is obvious that the OP has not given FF:ARR a fair chance. The OP does not want to give it a fair chance. Too many years in WOW to leave it all behind and start all over again. There is a comfort level in WOW for the OP. Not unlike a relationship, there is an emotional bond there. There is a sense of relief by openly claiming, "I see all the excitement FF:ARR is getting, I have given it a look, even though I did not delve deep into it I refuse to believe it is better than WOW, so I'm going back to WOW" ... /huge sense of relief.
There is a reason WOW was so openly referred to in this thread. Free yourself.

Hey...my imagination is in check and on full throttle at least once a week during my DnD group game nights, thank you very muchly!
I am uncertain of the game's depth so I gave no opinion either way.
I would rather that the points I have already made be countered instead of going into some tangent in a way that makes it feel like I said something against FFARR's depth. It's ok to point me towards the depth as I would consider it a good start towards building a personal positive for the game but I would prefer if someone said something within the realm of "Oh that invisible border to the shore in Western Thanalan? Yeah, they took that out. You can totally swim in that now"...Because being able to explore the world is a really big passion of mine.

World of Warcraft has been the only tried and true game I've ran back to so I am trying to determine if FFARR might have any chance of giving the same...
I guess I am wondering why did you even bother creating a long winded, uninformed thread?
First hand experience does not mean I am uninformed.
Hence your disclaimer which basically discredits most of what you wrote.
Dismiss this advise at your own peril, OP.
OP... The first step in recovery is admitting to the addiction. Break the chain's... it's ok

STAHP! XD
I left WoW for 8 months where much of that time was devoted to trying to figure myself into GW2. I begrudgingly went back to WoW but after a week of getting back into the grove of things I enjoyed the storyline but my eyes are still always wandering.
My partner would totally disagree about my WoW addiction. I phase in and out of that game with some really long hiatus'. I have been tagged as having MMO wanderlust. Yes, WoW is the one I always go back to in the end....but it's not without effort that I try and break this pattern.
Give it a little more thought, and you will eventually change that "somewhat right" to "mostly right."

I can easily refute each one of your claims. I simply choose not to, for fear that I will validate them. But since you bring up the invisible walls ... it's a non-issue. Every MMORPG has walls. There will always come a point, in every MMORPG, in which you will not be allowed to go further. You may have to travel for awhile, witnessing nothing but a mindless empty desert, but you know it's there. All FF:ARR does is eliminate the mindless empty desert. Every nook and cranny of FF:ARRs landscape is filled with action. It is alive. It is fun. The world is also huge. You don't believe me? Try it. That is all I will say. I feel I have contributed enough to your thread so I will leave it at that. Have fun with WOW ... and I mean that.

FFARR is so full of invisible walls it's not even funny. Not just the standard world ones that block areas. "Oh look what an interesting tunnel I wonder where it leads... oh what!? can't even enter although I see far inside..." One of the things I'm less and less happy to see in a game.

This is such a big deal for me as well I added an 'Extras" section to cover it. EQNext will allow me to dig several layers of subterranean down...and the world looks beautifully rendered. But will it play as smoothly as FFARR. This question I dread.
My comment was about mechanics. Not content.
Op made post. Poster called into question OPs post. Op then said "but how about my opinions?". I explained that many could view the opinions as invalid because of OPs statements. (OPs bias) I then gave an example of a different situation to elaborate.
Opinions formed with bias are by definition 1 sided. Not to be viewed objectively. Making the question of "How about my biased opinions?" an exercise in futility.

That escalated rather quickly...
It's a philosophical quandary.
Either way, these are my observations and because of aforementioned reasons I just cannot stomach shelling out any amount of cash for a game I might/will quickly stray from only to go back to World of Warcraft.
I guess I am wondering why did you even bother creating a long winded, uninformed thread?
And this is why I was torn with putting this in the general discussion threads versus the review section. I figured because of the layout it would instantly get flagged to be moved to the review section.
I do love your scenarios here though but I am not really trying to review the game. I am giving my obeservation and how they balance to that with my time in World of Warcraft so that the reader might draw a different conclusion that might bring about something I did not previously consider.
In the end: Someone had to pair up a WoW vs. FFARR post. Might as well be an MMORPG luminary like myself.
First hand experience does not mean I am uninformed. Ill-Informed perhaps and if that is the case please do correct me!

Can you be more specific to offering nothing over World of Warcraft other than modern graphics or is that just extremely accurate?
Give it a little more thought, and you will eventually change that "somewhat right" to "mostly right."
