Anyone else in an MMO-less lull right now?

I am an MMO addict in between MMO's, yes I say that as if I am in between jobs or relationships.

The genre is hopeless for me right now and it seems like the next new releases are eons away. I am from the UO/EQ/Daoc generation and nothing currently out is satisfying my needs at all, I have tried them all and am still looking for that one that will do it for me. I played Warhammer, GW2, and Rift for a while, other than that everything else has been meh. I search endlessly and revisit previously played MMO's to try and spark something, but no luck.

Anyone else going through MMO withdrawal? Just a curiosity for the sake of conversation, not looking for anyone to solve this for me or tell me to go outside....I do have a life lol. I just like to supplement it with my favorite genre.

Yes, I used to play most MMO's but I didn't stick around for long in any of them except WoW and EVE online.

 

Nowadays there are no MMO's that I want to play at all

If you are like me you try every damn one of them trying to recapture that old school magic feeling, even when I do it is fleeting lol. This feels like my favorite genre, but I think maybe it is an illusion anymore.

Been playing mmorpg's for nigh onto 23 years now and have been in a lull for bout a year.

As someone else said you do get pretty jaded, especially having played so long, youve seen it all prettymuch.

IMHO, thats prob why so  many new games get trashed,  because it all has been done  before, to various extents.

II even quit EVE, my second love after 10 years, for the same reasons, everything gets stale after a while, no matter what they , or you as a player do.

 

Ive been using this time to redo Oblivion, and Skyrim, play around with Rift as well as participate in a few betas along the way, I think theres some promising things in the works, but cant really comment .

Gotta feel the same, in fact prior to reading this post i was just going through the game list on this site for some inspiration

I am playing eve - but this is in the sense of sat in game rarely undocking and just using it as a social platform

FF14 - I tried to really love / like but for last 10 days not bothered to log in, I think for me that shipped sailed - whilst i enjoy some part of it I DON'T want to be the same build / same gear as everyone else, and sadly that the future of FF14

 

I check everyday in vain hope of a new beta invite but with nothing forthcoming im struggling to get motivated, the industry in my opinion needs a serious kick up ass.... will wild star / ESO / etc give it, Sadly im not sure if anything i would think maybe wild star might stand fighting chance but there is nothing truly innovative coming to the market.

I believe  Nietzsche wrote that music would eventually copy itself because only so much you can do with the same few notes (obviously he didn't know about synthesizers etc) but his point could well be said about the MMO market.

What frontier is there for the MMO - We need someone (be it small / kick starter or AAA maker) to come along and completely reinvent the wheel otherwise we will be stuck in the same rut we are in now, eventually the population will dwindle as each release copies a previous one etc, graphical updates are no longer enough to keep us happy, we need different mechanics who / what will bring that I don't know (heck if i did i would be rich)

I think part of avoiding the lull is gaming balance.  I tend to play hard and burn-out.  So I try to balance my mmorpg play with other multiplayer and SP games.  It helps to avoid the burn-out and lack of interest.  I do the same with books.  Too much fiction or even the same sub-genre, and I don't want to read after a few books.  I think new mechanics are coming slowly at a rate of 1 out of every 3 new titles that come along, but we can't wait on that.  I sit on these forums, too.  But we can't get discouraged, keep trying the new titles or try something different that makes you get lost and enjoy.

I'm in a lull myself. I haven't played an MMO in over 6 months IIRC. Last one I actually tried for longer than a week was TERA. There I didn't make it to level cap.

At this point I'm almost desperate to jump back into the MMO genre. I'm sure I'll give ESO a shot, but the release is so god damn far away. Wildstar I've lost touch with and doubt I'll bother. I may try Archeage, but again no real date. I 99.9% want to play Eternal Crusade but thats 2015... I'll definitely play EQ Next...but again some random time frame. Same story with Star Citizen.

Alas all the good games are so far away....

I log into WoW every now and then and spend a few hours on Timeless Island and then log off. 

The 1/2 price gamefly sale on FF:ARR is pretty tempting though.

For the past 2 years round bouts been in the MMO lull yet really want to get back into an MMO but can't seem to stick with any MMO.  LotRO, EVE, DDO, WoW, SWTOR, GW2, GW, Rift... maybe forgetting a few.  WoW being my first true love for MMOs for 3-4 yrs prior to this lull, and DDO being my 2nd love by an abusive partner during the lull.

WoW I had written off for good but with what I'm hearing of WoD it seems like they might be going back to the roots somewhat and is something I'll revisit WoW for.  Only played early Cata and never played MoP... just got it today with the black sales friday for 10 bucks woohoo!  If anything it'll give me my MMO fix that I need to do every now n then as I can only do so much SP games before needing to do an MMO.

One title in the future that does have my attention though is Pathfinder Online as I am a D&D fan (why I always come back to DDO for some short spurts) and see how it turns out.  Their ideals sounds great but it's all talk right now.

I know what you feel bro. I played everything and nothing in MMO space excited me for a long time... until I discovered Star Citizen. It is the first game since EVE Online that looks and feels like real next-gen MMO.

I'm in the same boat, UO/AC1/DAOC were the best mmo's I've ever played. They just don't make mmo's for us anymore. Since they started catering to the Playstation/Xbox gimme, gimme, now, crowd we haven't had a decent mmorpg.

Sort off, was playing and enjoying RIfT, but then SoD came and I never left it. While it is a singleplayer game, it just feels more alive then most generic MMO's.

Your actions in most current MMO are mostly useless, while a sandbox or singleplayer game your actions actually mean someting either in your town/city/area/world or even on planets.

Which is currently the reason why I aint playing an MMO right now but am looking forward to a few upcoming A and Indie tittle's.

Bought a few, last one was GW2, found it cluttered with quests/hearts or whatever they are called and the classes were dull.

 

I was surprised that I liked TSW, but it ran out of content, may go back, since they have put out a good number of updates since I stopped playing.

 

Before that was Vanguard for me, despite it's problems, it was a great mmo imo, just got abandoned and they closed the PvP servers down, so I left around that time.

 

I mostly play LoL and Civ IV with the wife atm, while I wait for something to come along.  I had a big lull right before I played VG also.  Not a big f2p mmo player, I dislike most of their systems in mmos.  I also dislike too much instancing...So between instancing and f2p, not much around.

Yes, OP, I am in an MMORPG lull right now with no foreseeable end. Times I even wish I didn't sign up for betas just so I could buy a new release only to be crushed. You see that way I would have at least experienced a flicker of hope when trying a new game rather than already knowing the inevitable disappointment to come. I keep checking the new releases list here at MMORPG.com waiting for something new to be announced that isn't F2P or from the Asian market. Nothing. The only games remaining on my radar with any real flicker of hope attached are Star Citizen and Elite: Dangerous.

 

Until then I am left to try a load of single player games bought during the STEAM holiday sales...

I've been in a serious lul as well. I've played almost everything fantasy based and have been left wanting. Just tried a beta for am old single player title that was quite popular and I'm very much looking forward to the next beta and of course release. In the more distant future is Camelot Unchained. I backed this title in KS and have kept up with their many news updates. I am very much looking forward to this title and hoping the first testing isn't too far off. I'm currently using EVE as a placeholder till a fantasy title can keep my interest.

Ditto.  Started these things back in the mid 90's with MUDs and followed them through the years.  The last one I really ever played for any length of time was... damned if I remember!

 

I've tried several betas and early access games but they all fail at one point or another; either in immersion, gameplay or financially.  Last one I recall playing and actuallyliking was Uncharted Waters Online, but that's turned into a clusterf*** of an economy and is geared towards the Pay-To-Win crowd now.

 

I've been having some luck with the smaller games, not really MMORPG's but still having some MMO elements to them.  Quick to learn, easy to play and fun for a while.  It beats the 6 month investment in a game only to be let down at the end.

Haha I was thinking the same thing. I try to enjoy the newer stuff for what it is: simple fun. It gets old quickly, and I dabble in some DAoC and SP games now and again. Patiently waiting for something more my thing from the upcoming wave of mmorpgs in the coming years.

     Unless a dev house somewhere breaks away from the current trend of games.. I may never return to playing MMORPG's again.. Which is a shame since I've enjoyed AD&D for over 30 years.. EQ was my bridge from paper and dice to the internet.. I played EQ for years until PoP, then jumped ship to WoW and cancelled that just before Cataclysm..  I've dabbled in other online games that pretend to be in depth RPG's, but for me all they are only lobby based co-op games..   Don't get me wrong, I like those games of games as well.. when I'm in the mood to play them, but they should never be confused to being replaceable.. After all, a corvette and chevette are both cars, but they are far from being the same.. lol

     I"m hoping for a niche game such as the old original EQ, but I won't hold my breath..

Been in a MMO lul for over a year now.  Tried almost everything.  Started with UO/AC DT/DAoC/EVE, once upon a time.. Even my old failsafe of Asian MMO's has gone to hell.   I've never seen anything wrong with grinding.  Yes, it's work, but you are usually working towards something.  Newer MMO's.. have no substance.  You don't PvP to take something from someone, you PvP for points and gear..    When I PvP'ed, I took your gear because I needed it, or the money from selling it.  I also enjoyed standing over your corpse, dismembering it, and making you watch as a ghost, as I played with the body parts, then opened a portal to the botom of a dungeon for you to rage in. (UO)  Now I just play, of all things, WC3 maps on Bnet.  I still prefer the original DotA to DotA2.  I'll probably be 40 before something good comes along.

Very much so... I go in and out of FFXIV ARR right now and that's about it....maybe GW2 or TSW if I'm in the mood. Nothing is too great right now and all the one's that seem great are like you said eons away

Yeah I hear you, OP, I hear you. I milked WvW in GW2 for months, but seems there is nothing that really piques my interest atm. It is kinda sad, and kinda weird too. I guess after so many disasters, SWTOR being the last, a lot of companies didn't want to dare to make a triple AAA MMO anymore.
