I remember immersing myself into a world and feeling like a druid, or a mage, or a mighty defender. Now days, you're just heals, or DPS or a tank. You're no longer playing a characterrole, you're settling for a play style. Everyone's a cookie cutter version of someone else. Exploration no longer matters, the worlds are tiny now and heavily instanced. Encounters aren't meaningful, you're either mashing 2 buttons over and over or playing 'UI Warrior Online'. Quests don't matter, they're all static and can be done without reading a single sentence. Socialization is dead, zergs have replaced parties and group content is optional.
This is what happens when the target audience shifts from role-playing nerds to 14 year old COD players.
Couldn't agree more. Unfortunately publishers are chasing $$ and want to make games with the lowest possible barriers to entry. There's just not enough RP nerds around any more to pique their interest.
Part of this is publisher expectations. Personally I think there are plenty of people who would get behind the right game. Perhaps it would never get close to WoW's sub numbers, but who cares really? Don't create as many servers and it will allow more tight-knit communities to form. There is still plenty of money to be made.
Has it occurred to any of you that maybe youve just out grown playing games? That your attention span has finally caught up to your age? If youre talking about the UO era, youre probably close to or in your 30s. Like me. Maybe its time to just...move on. Find another hobby. Its possible that no game will scratch your itch.
Everyone should look at Albion Online, its entering Alpha, it's a multiplataform MMO (including Android and IOS).
The brilliance is, shit matters in Albion world. They will have fullloot, siege mechanics (very interesting actually), item decay, constructions and some other interesting features.
The fact you'll be able to play this with a tablet amazes me. They seem to have great ideas, i encorage UO fans to take a look at it !

problem is , most hobbies are transitional at best,
fishing? hunting? quadding?, sledding?, Sports? reading? i do all that, full time job, family life, the works, problem is , after all that is said and done, i would rather much play a game than sit like a mindless zombie staring at the TV.

Lol nope. I am 33 and I game daily the same as I did when I was 8 and all those years in between. I just can't find an _MMO_ I want to play, even though I can imagine several awesome MMOs I'd like to play, because those particular types of MMO aren't being produced, and that's because I'm not in the producers' target audience. I agree with what I've seen a few other people around here saying - I want an age restricted server where I don't have to play with kids, I want a game that actually expects you to read the quests and puts effort into good stories, a unique deep virtual world to explore and craft in... all the elements that are expensive to produce and not appreciated by the "easier" teen market.
I want to help design and develop a PvE-focused, solo-friendly, sandpark MMO which combines crafting, monster hunting, and story. So PM me if you are starting one.
Definitely in a MMO lull atm. Nothing yet has captured me quite like SWG did or WoW Vanilla -TBC. Was an on / off again relationship with WoW into MoP then just got bored. Been playing around a bit with the SWGemu but its just not the same since the community is not there. Level capped a char in SWTOR but as everyone else found out the game was empty. GW2 felt like a level grind & everyone just interested in killing the boss, collecting loots, and moving on.
Honestly, games like GTAV have more MMORPG aspects to them the the current "MMMORPGs"
