I've been looking forward to Wildstar for a long time.
As far as the P2P model strictly, I felt that was something that NCSoft could do something differently. -shrugs-
Then Open Beta came. I installed at 300kbps (all day, dunno why) and eventually logged in with a GTX 770 OC2. Beautiful.
After some playing on both factions, the game strikes me as thus:
Space Guild Wars 2 with a side of Looney Tunes comedy, and some class development from The Secret World.
I applaud NCSoft for going away from their typical click-type game designs, but Wildstar just feels . . . odd. I had also hoped the Path system would be more rewarding.
Thanks for Open Beta!!
Comments
I disliked the path system at first, mostly cause i picked Soldier and Explorer, was so not me, but after going Settler ive enjoyed it greatly.
I played fair bit in closed beta, more than likely will be far more than i play in open beta
But i must say i love the path system, but also feel a little saddened that it doesn't offer more, I love the settler idea, go around and upgrade infrastructure for benefit of others, However, it would (and my opinion should) offer the builder more benefit
Why would i spend time building something that offers me no more reward than if someone else built it, Now im saying that i wont build blah blah, but surely as a specialist in that field would be nice if the buffs we gained were say 10% stronger or even something like 1% stronger per 10% of mats contributed.
This way we get a slightly better buff for doing the work, or , the other option would be a small monetary value, something like say 1silver per use by another player as a bonus - however, this would cause problems with inflation further down the line.
In closed beta i put this very idea forward, clearly not something devs were interested in
I will play the game on release, as an eve player i will be very interested too see how their version of Plex works for them, but clearly this offers a nice revunue stream but also offers the players who have time the ability to play without the real life cost.
This post is all my opinion, but I welcome debate on anything i have put, however, personal slander / name calling belongs in game where of course you're welcome to call me names im often found lounging about in EvE online.

Been playing in the Open Beta for the past couple of days - still in the starting regions with two characters.
For a face-enemy-to-damage game, not having mouse lock build in as a toggle was very nearly game breaking. I ended up using an Addon (at least they're allowing that...) for it, otherwise having to hold down r-click all the time... bleh.
The combat is nice, effects are very in-your-face compared to UI elements, which are tiny... quests are nice and varied, which was a nifty surprise, and I also like the coop elements in the open world - needing to work together to get past doors or enable features.
The overall comic-y way they went for the textures and models I do not like. But it's not a major enough issue to stop me playing, at least during the beta. I will probably not buy the game, but that's less the game, and more me lacking money.
30$ box price without a sub is the maximum I would be willing to pay for this, and that is only because I like hardcore raiding/dungeons. I found games like Neverwinter more entertaining than this, and that was a free game. 60$ + sub though? Hell no.
I sincerely hope this game will be the last in the long line of WoW copy games (someone will probably start listing all the features that this game has, and wow doesn't. Save yourself the trouble, the core gameplay is a wow copy)
It is essential that ESO and WS aren't hugely successful, otherwise we will be stuck in this clonefest for at least another 5 years. ESO made a good start with failing, I can only hope this game follows. And from what I've seen in the beta so far, there's a good chance it will.
Same as the core gameplay of WoW is the same as Everquest, so is it safe to say that WoW is another Everquest copy? Ppl are just short minded.
Played for two beta weekends and that was enough for me was hoping it would get better but it didn't for me. To much razamataz on screen cant hide what is basically a very boring experience.
I'm glad there are people that like it though, the last thing the industry needs now is another failure , especially after the ESO fiasco.
For now, Archeage is getting my time , it has so much to do and quite a lot of depth to it , enjoying it very much.
At least WildStar gives you the right with the open beta & 7 days trial after launch to check the game before you buy it. If you don't just stay away, simple as that.
Btw i cant even imagine how many ppl who already bought ESO, would have changed their minds, if they had the chance to try it first. So at least WS gives you that right. That's something.

I would say a failure is exactly what it needs. A success will hinder innovation and change because other companies will want to replicate that success.
Clones are absolutely fine for games that haven't been out long, such as DayZ, as competition will push both companies to make their game better.
In this case though, people are copying something that was made over 10 years ago.
Essentially, anyone who wants this game to succeed, is basically wanting there to be less variety in this industry, because that is exactly what the end result of this success will be. You'll keep getting more of the same.
That's all fine and dandy.. however it's not a clone.
It has enough features of it's own to easily slip away from being characterized as one.
..Cake..
Been this way for me now through 3 beta weekends and now the open beta. I really have no desire to play but all my gaming buddies are chomping at the bit to get back into that WoW Raiding mind frame and I feel obligated to follow them. At least I have ArcheAge to play while their not around or when it's not a raid night.
Sandbox means open world, non-linear gaming PERIOD!
Subscription Gaming, especially MMO gaming is a Cash grab bigger then the most P2W cash shop!
Bring Back Exploration and lengthy progression times. RPG's have always been about the Journey not the destination!!!
Housing and semi-action combat isn't enough to "easily" slip away from the characterization. Try as you might but this game is being designed full fledged with the disgruntled WoW'er in mind. Straight from the developers mind. I doubt it'll work honestly but it's not like the corporate world is going to give up this notion of toppling WoW anytime soon so might as well keep churning out those Themepark Clones.

I played today and will not be buying wildstar, it is not a bad game but does not justify box price plus monthly.
It is fun and shows a good direction far better than ESO but not worth a box price plus monthly
I had high hopes, I burnt myself out in closed beta though.
That's not to say it won't work for other people - it definitely will - I personally only have the patience for one treadmill, gear grind, carrot on a stick game.
It is very much a solid game, however as many have mentioned it is very similar to WoW - Why would I give up on WoW for something similar to WoW?
The simple answer is because Wildstar is better, however that is a matter of personal perspective, and I happen to believe WoW is still better.
WoW has all the deep history, lore, community, and even though Wildstar gameplay is overwhelming, WoW's overall presence is overwhelming - for me a WoW clone just is not going to pull me from WoW.
Good luck Wildstar - unfortunately your success is going to be greatly diminished due to the various business models, and competition, you have a solid game, but in my eyes, it's just not enough for me to say I will put down WoW and commit to WS
Moving forward..... Here's to AA, The Repopulation, EQNext, Trove, Star Citizen, The Division, Destiny, and any other surprises I might be interested in but don't know about yet
or am not on board with yet
(raises an eyebrow to Camelot Unchained and Warhammer 40k) - see production and quality concerns
Because there are ppl like me and my friends that we got sick of WoW after 10 years. Not of WoW style games, but WoW itself. That's the reason we bought and played Rift & SWTOR knowing they are a bit (or more) of WoW clones. We don't have a problem play a WoW style game with raids, gear grinding etc as long as its not WoW.
Is it going to be WS our new home? Time will tell, but WoW brings in many of us just boredom, not of its quality but because we burned out there for almost 10 years...

That is also a good reason - I would agree - it's more complex than one game being better than the other like I pointed to with the "simple" answer :-)
Death is nothing to us, since when we are, Death has not come, and when death has come, we are not.
It won't be anywhere near what ESO experienced - Carbine is a professional developer not a rookie like Zenimax
ESO is a WoW clone?! LOL I'll admit that WildStar feels a little like WoW in space now and then but I can't for the life of me think how ESO feels even remotely like WoW besides you're in a virtual fantasy world playing a character that goes on quests, kills stuff, with a ton of other players you could possibly interact with, etc. In which case WoW is a Meridian 59 clone which is just a text based game clone with 3D and multiplayer thrown in. Too funny.
ESO - is not a wow clone, but eso gets left out of the discussion because it sucks so bad. ESO is irrelevant.
We can sit here and say countless things to prove each other if WS is better than WoW or ESO etc.
The point is that, lets say for me, the good things that ESO provides (like questing or lore) are not of my taste, as i m more of a raider etc and i m not caring much about lore or quests.
On the other hand WoW may have a lot of good things that are in my taste variety but i got bored of them after so many years.
So to conclude, my choice is WS not because is superior than ESO or WoW or GW2 etc but because what offers is close to my tastes and my home town will not be named "Orgrimmar" and i the spamm in WS chat will not say "Dirge" (well i m not sure about that)

wow has been out for 10 years. In those 10 years every other mmo after WoW tried to do the same thing instead of breaking the cycle of clones. Oh a new game with one sweet innovative feature! but the rest of the game is the same boring shit. Oh another new mmo with a different and innovative feature! but the rest of the game is the same old boring shit, and so on and so forth....
While i can see your point with wow being an EQ copy. There was nothing else to compete with at that time (very few mmos) and WoW destroyed them. That will never happen again with a newer mmo. So he also has a point with his post. Using the wow is eq copy as an excuse is also short minded if you consider how long have those games been out and how was the competition back then compared to today. I do disagree with him in some things but not in the lack of new ideas from new games.
The mouse non lock was off putting for me too especially as a big fan of tera's combat I actually thought that was how it was going to be but its more like GW2 which isn't bad I just prefer Tera. Could you please PM name of the addon and were you got it would be very grateful.
ESO functions in many ways the same as WoW. Think about it for a second.
How does the character progress to maximum level? There is a level 1-5 zone, with level 1-5 mobs, the player is required to complete all the quests in the level 1-5 zone, to be able to handle the next zone, which is level 6-10. And in so doing, the 1-5 zone becomes extremely easy and players have no reason to return because the gear is inferior, the crafting mats are inferior, and the mob drops are inferior.
How does gear work? Each piece of gear has a specific level requirement, and players can't somehow equip it if they don't meet that level. Outleveling a piece of gear means it can be sold to a vendor because it's trash. Compare this to other games, where the usefulness of a gear isn't tied to its level requirement. A piece of gear found at the start of the game can still be the best choice in certain situations in endgame because of special properties.
I could list these 'standard' design choices all day, but I believe you get the point.
