Launch day is here. You may even already be playing, or watching someone play, Bungie's new quasi-MMO shooter Destiny. Our own Bill Murphy was in all day yesterday, and has some launch-day thoughts on Bungie's big new IP.

Well, if you want to see games, which bring nothing new, borrow some stuff from other games, try to sell this as the new sh.t. and hide it behind tons of advertisement and paid reviewer money, then go and buy Destiny.

    Hodor!

Not going to waste my money on a console that is already outdated so until Bungie finds some time to put out a PC version they will be missing out on a large portion of the marketplace.

Personally Bill, I think Bungie will find there is not even close to a 10 year journey for this game.  I think that by late fall their player base will face a decline as people more on to other game releases.  The console market it not known for long term play although there have been a few good titles that have achieved that.  Have to wait and see if this is one of them.

I can't fathom 100 vs 100 pvp. I have been part of so many epic moments during my Halo years, I don't if I would like large pvp battles, I suppose I would be open to try it out. I know I don't really like Ps2 large pvp battles as much, but that's thousands of people, there is a sweet spot for me that the number of players is to many, hopefully Bungie will find that number, I don't think it's 100v100 battles, even that's to large, I think at least, I like to keep the match small enough that even if I get stuck playing with noobs, I can tell them to go hide while I go out and take care of business like the true hero I am :-)

I have played Planetside 2 the first couple months.

The first month it was totally awesome, with Epic Battles and lots of Cooperation With Nice players.

Then it slowly devolved into a zergfest, where the factions avoid eachother and just do base swapping.

Boring! Quit! Never looked back!  And seriously.... in every MMO with this so called largescale PVP, it always turns into these zerg fest where people end up playing the mechanics (read rewards) instead of the game.

Destiny is first and foremost a PVE  FPS Online game. PVP is second.

If all you are interested in, is PVP... then stay clear of Destiny and wait for the next installments (read rehash) of CoD and BF.

I have been playing Destiny for over 3 hours now and been having a total blast! Definitely a step up for me in the FPS genre!

This game doesn't hold your hand! Or you end up just doing the Story missions and miss out over 70% of the maps and content in the game.

At Level 5 you can pickup bounties at The Tower, with which Exploration mode starts! Then the maps really start to open up!

Exploration, pick up missions all over the map. Public Events that suddenly start, dropping on your arse and suprising you (requiring people on the map to cooperate or you fail). And if you walk to deep into the Territory the mobs increase both in Level and difficulty quickly.

I really like the Exploration part so far. Gives a bit of "sandboxy" feel and freedom. Do what you want. No linear hand holding themepark crap.

Racing around with my Sparrow is fast! Very nice! :) (gives me som DeJaVu moments with my speeder in good old SWG)

So far, I have only seen about 30% or so from the Russia map.

I have been expressing my worries before launch, that with 4 planets (= 4 maps), the game would be small, thin on content and quickly finished.  Well, if the Russia map is anything to go by. I am eating my words right now.

I am so far impressed. But it helps that I had set my expectations low, ignored all the hype. Makes the game much more enjoyable right now.

Bwahahahahahaha!!!!! I literally laughed when I read your comment. It's actually quite an unintelligent argument from someone who's completely ignorant on the subject. It's like making the argument that nothing's changed since Super Mario Brothers.

I gotcha here, I do plan on enjoying every ounce of pve as well, I am concerned about how challenging it will actually be though, anytime you bring more people, the fights never scale correctly. I hope at at least higher levels the game is somewhat challenging. Legendary and full skulls on Halo 3 wasn't bad, so hopefully it's something like that. As far as pvp second, I wouldn't put it that way, The Bungie development team makes the best pvp maps and when they get around to putting a player forge in, it will only be more enhanced.

I've already bought the first two DLC, and I believe they have announced the first will be released in December.

It's perfect for me, I'll be playing the crap out of Destiny until mid November, then it's Halo MCC, AC: Unity, and then DA:I followed by more Destiny in December than Witcher, Division etc. in 2015 (followed by more Destiny)

Well, based on some feedback I'm getting from some people at work who booked the day off to play, it's more difficult than beta. At last check they were hung up on Devil's Lair because it's just too difficult to progress any more. I'm assuming that's on Normal difficulty. Might be a welcome change. Can't wait to play myself.

Well if it remains on a console...as anyone can see....the hype will last for about 5 to 6 months then the game will be dead about 3 months later....so 9 months tops.  If it hits the PC it better be much better then a console port as there is no excuse to be bad on a PC.

Lets see...Titan Fall, Grand Theft Auto.....good games....but due to the way a console cant really give you improvements to your game.....the games just kind of go down in popularity.

After this many years I think everyone has noticed console releases are for games that developers don't want to have a very long life span on....unless they shovel tons of money into them to artificially keep them going.

And that's how this game is going to be.....kind of bad move making only console versions....way too many limitations because of it.

To answer the question "What's Destiny's Destiny". The answer is quite simple. Destiny's Destiny is to be a game. Nothing more, nothing less.

    In War - Victory.
    In Peace - Vigilance.
    In Death - Sacrifice.

There are no limitations on console man!  People really need to get that out of their heads!

I play Final Fantasy FFXIV:ARR both on PC and PS4.  Exactly same experience!

And before that, people have been playing FFXI on console for years.

DCUO I play on PS4 too now and it's great!

Both PS4 and XBOX One have bluray and large hardrives (upgradable). That's 50GB capacity per disc!

Most MMORPG's today average 10GB to 40GB in size. So exactly what limitations are there?

Hardware? PS4 is capable enough! Good CPU, GPU and 8GB of RAM!

Even on PC, games are created with the lowest possible spec in mind, because the vast majority of PC gamers run old machines!  It would be Financial suicide to create a game with top spec PC's only!

So the hardware is no excuse either.

Controller? No excuse either. Again look at the impressive Control scheme of FFXIV:ARR. I have currently 3 hotbars times 8 skills mapped on the PS4! Can map even more hotbars if I want to.

Not to mention, that if you want to, you can just Connect keyboard and mouse to Your console and use that instead. Fully supported.

I think you may have taken the question much too literally. I don't think that the question was whether or not it will turn into a boy all Pinnochio-style. The question is whether or not it will enjoy the longevity that Activision and Bungie obviously envision for it. Will it be here in 10 years? Will people still be playing the game? Will they be doing movies? Shoot, based on the Live Action trailer that was released last week, it's evident that they have the capability of creating content that's "feature film quality", so will they be popular enough with it to justify a film? Will it be compelling enough to have a cult following?

Make no mistake, though, it will definitely not be a boy.

The game didn't cost 500 million to make.

It's complete misinformation spread by the press!  Causing unrealistic hype!

If anyone actually bothered to read the statement by Activision long time ago, would have known that the 500 million is an investment for the coming years.

In other Words. They reserved that money to be used on the Destiny franchise as a whole between now and coming years.

It's as new as a 2015 Corvette. I'm telling you right now, the 2015 Corvette will NOT have a governor at 60mph and it will NOT seat 7. Same as there are expectations of a shooter. Let's face facts, there are tons of innovations and genre-bending features of this. People just don't look hard enough, or even care to look hard enough.

I dont care if a game brings out something new or not, as long as it's well made, runs smooth, and most of all, is a ton of fun. There's so many games that bring nothing new and are still extremely fun.

My dream MMORPG could be made of elements that have been present in MMO's already, the problem is, not a single dev team has managed to create the right kind of mix of the ingredients already out there.

  • MadFrenchieMadFrenchie Member LegendaryPosts: 8,505
Bungie themselves talked of this game as an FPS to change the face of FPSs. It does not do that.

I had it preordered for PS4, but just wasn't impressed by the beta. It was simply a generic shooter with forced multiplayer. No better than any of the previous Bungie entries, no worse I guess. So take that as you will, but it definitely isn't groundbreaking. And that was disappointing for me.
