For that much money, they'd have to guarentee that i'd come out on top of the deal compared to paying individually over the years. And for that, they'd have to be able to guarantee fun.
And if money would not be an issue on my side, i still see no reason to throw it at a company like Blizzard. They are swimming in it, they wouldn't even notice it if all the people who visit mmorpg.com pay $1000 at the sime time. Heck, make that $10.000 or $100.000.
If money were not an issue, i would buy more games when i'm bored, or buy early acess from interesting looking indie-developers, or kickstart things.
I don't think i would ever pay that much money for something like a lifetime subscription, as there is no point. If i pay $1000 to kickstart something because i want it to get made and there happens to be a lifetime subscription included at that level, i certainly wouldn't complain, but again, paying so much for the subscription itself, no.
Tl;dr: If money is not an issue, paying so much for something "truly unique" - well, more like, "out of the ordinary": Yes.For something mundane which i can - for all intents and purposes - get cheaper? No. Why would i?
Besides If icould see into the future, so i would know whether it will end up worth buying it, i would have bought Blizzard stocks, or Google or Apple or some other companies when they where cheap. I would have made so much more money that i never have to worry about whether i save or pay even more with something like a lifetime sub.
I'll wait to the day's end when the moon is high And then I'll rise with the tide with a lust for life, I'll Amass an army, and we'll harness a horde And then we'll limp across the land until we stand at the shore
I don't mind dropping a couple hundred bucks to get the lifetime subscription to games that I like, but I'll only pick it up at release. If Blizzard did something like this now, it would seem too cheap and desperate on their part. Would I have paid $1,000 for WoW; even at release? No, definitely not. Not unless they allowed me some sort of access to the development process of the game.
And it's not because I don't like WoW at all, because I do. It's simply because it can't hold my attention for consecutive months at a time any more.
When I first started playing WoW it was the only MMO I had ever played, and I had always dreamed about making a character in a fantasy land and playing them. Now, I play too many MMOs to keep my attention focused on just one, especially one that is as gear focused as WoW is.
I would never pay that much for a lifetime, maybe $300 max for a game, but I've never bothered to buy a lifetime for any price.
I played EQ for a lot longer than WoW and I doubt I spent that much in subs. Also, even if the game is your absolute favorite from the very beginning, the game can get butchered, just like DAOC was for me, which was my all time favorite. I ended up playing that a lot less than EQ (which is a close 2nd) because of a damn expansion. Went back later off and on, and it was decent, but they kept butchering it even more. ugh. Also the game just got dated, movement wise, and its hard to go back.
I did play WoW quite a bit, but even took breaks in vanilla, missed TBC, liked wotlk, some cata and panda. Also I got the expansions cheap. For wotlk/tbc it cost me $20, got cata for $10, and I got Panda 1 MONTH after it released for $5! So throwing in the expansions isn't worth it.
I bet you can get WOD cheap on black friday like I did with panda, but probably not as cheap, but still better than $50, as long as you don't need to have it right away and rush to 100 lol.
I do know some people would easily pay that because people have paid more for kickstarter games that don't even give you a lifetime sub, lol. I did donate for camelot unchained, a decent amount, but I ended up getting 2 lifetime accounts plus a bunch of other stuff. Sure it was a gamble, but I had disposable income and it was less than my max for 1 game I believe. Think if I play it even 1 year, would break even.
In a perfect gaming world - Maybe.. Heres my problem, If I did they prolly would come out with crappier stuff down the line. Once they have your money....do they have to guarantee future content to be bad ass? - Short answer - no.
It like some relationships, once you invest into one(not all) it goes down hill....Once you find the perfect one you live with nothing but regrets for the rest of your life, lol
So since we don't live in a perfect world.... I refuse to pay $1000....unless they gave a money back guarantee, signed in blood!
Ha, I'd pay millions for my dreamgame, if I had that kind of money. Of course I would own it and have the final say about the direction it is going and the subs would go my way, so I'd probably get my money back. But still.
Leaving aside the fact that I only ever played WoW for six weeks back in 2006 before getting bored with it and never to return, I don't think any ten year old game would be worth buying a lifetime sub for. Even if it was, no game would be worth a $1000 lifetime sub either. Very few people would ever play a game for long enough to recoup that kind of outlay.
Honestly I don't play WOW. But to be honest, if this was offered at launch, even though lifetime subs were not something to be known about at that time, I am willing to bet that a fair amount of people would of purchased it for $1000.00 knowing full well that it would be around for quite some time.
Look at people who have previously bought EQ characters for insane amount of money, or the fact many have spent countless dollars on gold and other things ingame.
Look at Star Citizen if you think its crazy, BLIZZARD in 2004 was heads above nearly any developer out there. It would of sold countless lifetimes.
IF you could have predicted the future in 2004 would you have bought the game for $1000 lifetime sub?

The game has been out for 10 years, I highly doubt it you would even get you would even break even.
The game is 10 years old yes, but it has still not be dethroned. That's because with every expac in evolves into a newer version of itself without compromising its identity, think about that, what other game can do that? Not one - this is "the" game and you would have the oppurtunity to pay once and play forever knowing you would not have to spend one more cent to play, compete, and be apart of the main event. $1000 that's all for life.
On that rational, no MMO has ever been dethroned, as there are still MMORPGs out there that are still up and running with expansion packs, EvE Online and EQ1 & 2 come to mind. WoW has been about for 10+ years, sooner or later it's hold on the market will die due to consumer needs. That's just gross statistics 101.
If you haven't noticed already, the drive to develop sandbox games is the new, or should I say, "born again" era of MMOs. By 2016, theme-park games will go the way of the dodo until consumer interest brings them back.
if WoW turned into a hot girl every night after i log out i would...... nope, not even that.
Not for any any game. Why would i pay that amount for a lifetime subscription when i know i will not play that much? Some people really have no notion of what to do with money on their hands. Just look at the battle ships in Star Citizen with ¨life Insurance¨ lol.

Why pay $1,000 for a lifetime sub to WoW when I can just buy 3 ships from Star Citizen to fund their website? Amirite guys?

As expected, this thread has attracted the MMO snobs like moths to a flame. We get it, guys...you're cool because you don't like WoW.
No.

No!
Seems to me whenever a game offers a lifetime sub, its either about to go F2P or down the pan, usually both
No.
Or any other game for that matter.
Not all who wander are lost...
Given the extreme amount of traffic in this forum, I kind of doubt the mods would want to close the most active thread, pointless as it may be.

BWAAAAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! ROFLMAO! BWAAAAAAAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHA!
Holy crap, I almost passed out laughing when I read that question.
NO subscription fees for any games.
dark souls games are better than any mmos and they don't ask a sub.

I think all "traditional" MMOs will go the way of the dodo ...

200 is max I spend on lifetimes
I played 6 months of TSW straight, and got enough value out of it, I occasionally stop in to do stories without feeling obligated to sub
Ill take this deal, pay me $5000 and I will cover your wow sub and xpacs for the rest of your life.
