Fantasy and skateboards just don't match. But it's a personal thing. Taste.

Well, yes they did, and for this game I say so what? It's had this daft element to it for a long long time and I adjusted to it accordingly.

I am sure that that 100 posters that never intended to play the game will post here outraged by the inclusion of these kind of things, while the vast majority of people having fun in the game will be working towards cars and boards and having a ton of fun with races and whatnot. And, seeing as I don't hate fun, I will probably be joining them.

I think that the strength of fantasy is that it can be so much more than a set of tropes and conventions put down in 1937.

"cars and boards" ... Hate to break it to you, but... not fantasy. Sorry.

You need to get your head around Landmark and EQN being two seperate games.

No pump has been 'primed'. The stuff you people type...

No, just not YOUR narrow definition of fantasy.

All you are "breaking to me" is your myopic view of the genre.

Old news. This has been known about for a month or two. Most players have no problem with this sort of thing anyway. AA isn't a traditional fantasy game and the players already know that. It's just an alternative world where anything can go if XL Games wants to include it. I'm sure plenty of people will want a skateboard if it comes to the western version. I know I will.

Once you understand and accept that the world of ArcheAge isn't pure medieval fantasy, you'll see that this is just another mount that is made available to the players.   More mounts make for a cooler game and more ways to have fun.

Ohhhh... so cars and skateboards are "real", therefore they cannot be in a fantasy game ?

So horses, castles, bows, swords and armour are not "real", so they are perfectly fine in a fantasy game ? Steampunk is a subset of Fantasy, so it broadens the scope of what is "allowed".

Fantasy is not another name for "Lord of the Rings" or "Game of Thrones". It encompasses all things that are imagined, but not everything in a fantasy game needs to be imagined. It is a mix of the familiar and the fantastic.

It wouldn't surprise me if all of the people bitching and moaning about skateboards in Archeage were all quite happy and didn't kick up a fuss when the all powerful Blizzard put Helicopters, Motorcycles and Rockets into WOW.

It wont ruin Archeage for me, just because somethings in the game doesn't mean I have to get it and use it myself, and I don't really care what anyone else decides to ride about on as i'm too busy enjoying the rest of the game.

With cars added 1.5 years ago, its not so odd.

Well they are not burden by the same strong fairy tail/folk lore connection to "classic" fantasy that we carry. They play pretty fast and loose with their own folk lore so it stands to reason that they do the same with our. ArchAge is not a Tolkienesq fantasy game, it is more a literal "fantasy" game. A fantastic playground where anything can and does happen.

Don´t let your own narrow definition get in the way of their creativity =P

It's not just asian mmos anymore either, but sometimes even western ones.  One could argue that WoW has many immersion breaking things too.

    Pretty much.

It's already got modern day outfits, ranging from T-shirts and swimwear to cars, so I'm not surprised to see this update.

It doesn't really matter though. Their target audience generally couldn't care less about such silly things like the setting and lore, and just wants a massive playground to bash each other over the head repeatedly.

So while some are no doubt offended by it, their most devoted fans won't really care. Pretty sure if I tell my friend (who's absolutely crazy about AA) that they're adding skateboards to AA his response will be "Cool" (Which generally translates to "I don't really care" whenever he says that :P).

this game is fun, and its a steam punk so its not lotro, and they can do the fuck they want with the lore, so who cares.

if u want something more medieval fantasy with heavy lore, u got load of games, go there

  • JabasJabas Member UncommonPosts: 1,249

ArcheAge have some serious and real problems that must be solve.

Having skateboards in a game with tractors, cars, submarines and gliders up side down is not going to be one of them.

The discussing going on what fantasy is or what is not is ridiculous imo.

XXI century and theres ppl things that fantasy is only Lord of the Rings? People should try to read more diferent books and see diferent movies outside of what masses follow and try to open a little more hes owm mind.

Oh what a shock. Or not - this is so typical for Asian MMO's... tanks, musketeer  uniforms, sport cars, boats, airplanes near dragons, undead, dinosaurs, spells etc. all together in a horrible mix. The infamous "stamina" system is there also (LP's), a very very common thing for Asian games. To be expected: gamble boxes selling random items of power in the item shop.

Did you just compare WOW lore to that of AA?

  • H0urg1assH0urg1ass Member EpicPosts: 2,380

I don't see the problem here.

Honestly, even the slightest bit of research prior to this games release would have already proven that this is your typical Asian MMO.  Asians have a completely different "fantasy" lore than we do and it shows in nearly every Asian MMO that exists.

I'm not saying it's good or bad, I'm just saying that they do not slavishly follow the Tolkien example.  Far from it.  They enjoy mixing elements of the past, present and future into their entertainment.  A guy wearing leather armor and carrying a magic sword fighting a 20' tall robot with lasers shooting out of it's eyes is perfectly normal in Asian entertainment.

Personally, I don't care for EITHER form of the fantasy Genre.  I'm a low fantasy fan myself.  No elves, no dwarves, no +3 magic swords leaning against every wall.  Just humans struggling with living in a grim and bloody world, where a good sword is made by a master craftsman and isn't "magic".

Not that magic and monsters can't exist, but in the worlds I enjoy it's so rare as to be shocking when it's encountered.  Conan, Kull and A Song of Fire and Ice come quickly to mind.

    +1

XL has created one of the more feature rich MMO's that we've ever seen.  It's inevitable that certain items / features are going to seem silly to some players but the good features far outweigh the bad IMO.

Archeage's lore is post apocalyptic, the damn Nuian opening cinematics tell you this. One of the Harani quests is going into one of their mechanized cities and stoping rampaging robots. The Harani mount is a -ROBOT-

Learn some damn lore before we start to sling mud

And yes, every fantasy game is not some retelling of Lord of the Rings

Hell even the medieval period of REAL Life is not what many of you tend to think.....  (Like Europe being purely lily white for example - lies)

Sounds like people are just making excuses to not play the game. You don't like the game be a man and say it, don't get all girly and start complaining that pizza isn't pizza anymore because in Japan they put mayonaise on pizza (which they do)

Its a cultural thing. Europeans get over yourselves.

Any mmo worth its salt should be like a good prostitute when it comes to its game world- One hell of a faker, and a damn good shaker!
