If you take away the VO from SWTOR and just focus on the actual questing then SWTOR isn't realy that great. Ofc. you cant just do that, but still I don't thnk SWTOR's quests were much better than ex. the quests in wow.
I know, wow probably doesn't belong on this list, but still. It's the most played MMO by far, and has been for the last decade. So surely wow must be doing something right.
As much as I like GW2, it is not for the questing. I would instead include LOTRO on that list. The main LOTRO story arc is terrific. And I do agree Runescape deserves to be on that list. It is an old game but those quests remain some of the best quests in any old or new MMO.
Simply put I like a good story and these hand it out in spades. Lore need to be lead through with quests, if you screw up the line... Like WoW has for last 5 years it becomes something players find forgettable.
totally agree with this. GW2 had a feeling of futility with the quests all springing up anew around you. nothing felt completed. safe to say the "story" didnt grab in the slightest.
i would say that aside from its numerous shortcomings SWTOR would have to be the best for storyline, interactive, class specific, faction specific and shared group stories.
followed up with TSW, though the atmosphere, music, visuals and characters all lend to making the storyline engrossing. not to mention the real world puzzles and investigations.
I love ESO but if they had done some class, race, faction specific characters to interact with in the main story/guilds it would have been a longer lasting experience. or if they had an entirely different quest line when you did the other factions. making the 2 factions like vet dungeons, continuations of the story where you merge into it and of course difficulty level, but expansions on the delves etc. the break down of anchors since you have already foiled molag bal.
the lore is deep, but with all things ESO it needs more more more!!!

On top SWTOR, only game where I actually follow and listen. Even after all unique combinations of alts from both faction leveled to max. Rarely will skip some dialogs. I really enjoy in SWTOR quests.
Great for sure Wow, TSW, ... One of the WORST questing system: GW2. Played, enjoyed first 6 months, ... then lost completely interest for questing.
I think that GW2 have superior quest system because freedom that gives. I felt huge relief playing without quest hubs and exploring world where dynamic events can happen and make you discover places you never thought to go.
Seems that this list is based solely on the story part of the questing (backstory, voice acting, . But an engaging storyline spanning Kill X / Fetch Y quests is not good at all.
Howe about a list of unique questing implementation (not quest STORY) ? Ok TSW would probably win there as well, but I'd be interested in that.

I don't think it's that entirely, but in saying that I would much rather take a brilliant storyline with a lot of kill quests over an appalling and generic storyline with more varied implementation.
In reality we tend to see that games that have a generic crappy story also have a generic crappy quest system (e.g. most Korean MMOs), while the ones with the good stories have a mixture.
Back in the days i took a free trial of DAoC and there were quests like killing 2 goblin warchiefs. You actually had to pick up some insider info to finnish the quest. One of them was surrounded by his warband anytime but when he went fishing. That alone smokes any quests i've seen in MMOs for the last 5 years.

Interesting idea. Though to me both aspects are important, so my list would remain the same (TSW, STO, TOR, LotRO and AoC), with some order changes
TSW's quest mechanic ("net" instead of a hub, following the stories through the map) is awesome. STO is also great, the episod-like quest layout, the DOff chains, and how the two influencing each other resulting a nice mix (and also there's the Foundry).
LotRO would jump into 3rd, with the last few year's changes (Orchalwe in Annuminas, last revamp of Trollshaws/Misty, etc). I really like those mechanics.
4th shared place for AoC and TOR, implementation-wise both have regular questing, but with a nice twist on the NPC interaction (AoC) and on the companions / affection system (TOR).
Really? GW2? GW2 questing was questing designed for people who skip quest text. It's like the designers asked themselves what questing was for and answered "to give experience, currency and gear," and then built a skeletal frame to provide only that with the barest of effort on their part. It's a series of chores a player has to do with no context as to why they're doing them other than because that's how you level up. It's fucking awful and should only be held up as an object of scorn.
ESO and TSW did it right. If you want to see what it looks like when a developer actually devotes resources to building the quests in their MMO, look at thees two games.

How the hell did you guys not put SWTOR on this list? Seriously, mmorpg.com...you guys suck out loud.
I'll second that. I hope they're not paying these morons that write some of these articles.
Asheron's Call
Sword of Lost Light Quest.
How can you call these themepark game quests fun when they are so boring and holding your hand the whole time?
Agreed.
Runescape - I'd have to say Bringin Home the bacon as it was from the looks of it made by a player but in a good way.
UO - even though their only escort quests at the time it was good.
Terra Online - Not kidding it's all about quests and is a quest grinder but that's the idea really.
EverQuest - can't really beat it
Neverwinter - Really the best pve experience you can ask for
WoWs They Took me Pants also deserves an honerable mention because it's so damn funny
This isn't a signature, you just think it is.
Haha, I mean a article about Top 5 MMO's based on quests without LoTRO on it ?
Come on Man !!!
1) TSW
2) FFXIV ARR
3) SWTOR
4) AoC
5) LotRO

Played: UO, LotR, WoW, SWG, DDO, AoC, EVE, Warhammer, TF2, EQ2, SWTOR, TSW, CSS, KF, L4D, AoW, WoT
Playing: The Secret World until Citadel of Sorcery goes into Alpha testing.
Tired of: Linear quest games, dailies, and dumbed down games
Anticipating:Citadel of Sorcery
1. The Secret World--Is #1 by a mile. No other game comes close to TSW for storylines and quests. Still play this a lot.
2. I would also add SWTOR here, really enjoyed this game till they screwed it up with the server mergers, but quests were awesome.
3. ESO outstanding quest lines. varied yet with a common thread. Still playing.
4. EQs a questers dream world, so much to do
5. ???
Never played Runescape so don't want to discount it, many other good choices mentioned.
