I'm an ESO fan... I play ESO and I personally also saw that screen last Friday afternoon during the last hours of voting. Then TSW, who had a forum mod participating in their thread about voting since round one, added a similar message to their log-on screen.
So, yes, it did happen. Now everyone yawn and move on.
pre-game Patcher thingy, not log-in screen. Forum mod has no acces to that.
While we are at it; I never saw the message.
No. I saw it on the log-on screen exactly as the picture posted above.
Any way you shake it, this has been very good PR for these games. And both ESO and TSW still seem to want publicity... LOTRO and EVE don't care enough for the companies to get involved promoting votes.
All I know is I never played TSW and next month I plan on buying it. Yes good PR for the games.

Every MMO has a forum. Don't blame ESO for having a community active enough to care. As I mentioned before, haters are just going to have to come to terms with the fact that ESO is not only alive and well, but it has an outstanding community that is very active. Alot of that is due to the fact that for the most part the developers have demonstrated that they listen to the community, which in turn keeps the community active. Someone could have and/or did create a post on the forum for every game in this contest. The notion that posting a thread on the game's official forum somehow gave ESO an unfair advantage is ridiculous.

You'll enjoy it. I did for several months. Best quests in the MMO genre and an interesting weapon-based character advancement system.,

LOTRO was a great game and still holds up to a degree. It has some wonderful systems for RPers but the painfully boring progression and lackluster stories, even if you're an LOTR fan, leave it feeling flat.
ESO takes the cake I'm afraid, though it's more broad in its appeal. It also has far superior combat, the graphics are some of the best in any MMO to date. though I would say LOTRO's visual STYLE is a bit better, ESO's fidelity cannot be matched.
Pointless as ESO has more players and a developer who is not shy about letting all players know about this contest via a splash message on the login screen.
If Blizzard did the same on their launcher though.....
But they don't care about these meaningless contests because they don't need the publicity.
Smaller devs like ZoS and Funcom do however - otherwise they wouldn't bother either.
It would be great to see this broken down in two ways:
A poll including all votes (which will be ESO and TSW wins - the two companies that let their players know about the contest)
And a poll excluding ALL votes from new accounts - I'd love to see that
Yeah, it seems whatever dev actually advertises it, wins. Nexon did a bonus whenever it's game won, like +50% EXP for a week, etc. Not really fair when they bribe their users like that.
I have a lifetime sub to Lotro but I am currently playing ESO and so I voted that way. Usually I would vote for Lotro, but I'm seeing the developers of ESO doing great things and changing the game, not letting it mire in what "they" think it should be no matter what the community says.
I voted for TSW too here, but only because Eve pisses me off to no end. Great game IDEA and lore and atmosphere, but actual gameplay is HORRIBLE. TSW has everything great except COMBAT and unlike ESO and Lotro above, who both changed or are about to change their combat to appease their players, TSW seems to be stuck in that "we know better than you" mode and won't budge. Really wish they would because then I would sub to the game the way I'm subbed to ESO right now and would be all about new content. But combat alone is so boring and tedious and just doesn't feel right and literally pushes me away from the game.
So anyway, for ESO comes out on top over all and that's a big change from my attitude toward it during it's first 3 months of launch. Really enjoying the game now and can't wait for the changes and additional content coming our way in the next year.
Glad to hear you are enjoying the game!!! What are the devs doing that are interesting to you? Also, what aspects of the game do you enjoy the most? I am considering getting the game...soon...
Well, we've got changes to the endgame coming in 1.6 as well as major changes across all classes in order to get away from cookie cutter builds and useless skills, so that's always a good idea. We've got the Justice system coming adding a much needed single player Elder Scrolls feature, where your "immoral" actions have consequences, so that makes choices like stealing and what not actually have meaning. On top of more zones, dungeons etc. which is always good to get as a paying customer each month, unlike other "big" games out there who charge a monthly fee and don't give such content out at all or take a year to do it, ahem, lol.
For me, I enjoy the combat, the exploration, the whole, pick a direction and just go aspect and content is literally in every direction, tons of meaningful quests, some with twists I didn't see coming, interesting economy/crafting, for me, I enjoy the art and graphics as well as armor designs.
I guess my only real issue with ESO anymore, is the lack of a larger soundtrack and variety of music. What's there is good but get's very old. For me, each zone should have it's own music and subzones(areas in zones, like dungeons, forests, lakes, etc.) should have different music as well. This is one thing WoW does right that crushes every MMO out there. So...that's pretty good in my book for an MMO to have only one little con like that.
I also enjoy doing the solo stuff while leveling and then wrapping up the group stuff all at once per zone in a guild group. Had a blast doing that the other night with some guildies. On top of knowing that I have a TON of lore books to find in all zones, Skyshards, and skill points to make my character "my own" even after hitting the level cap. Add to that achievements...just so much content to tackle and I'm taking my time and enjoying it all.
Thank you! That is a great writeup. I keep hearing that the changes are great and people should start playing after some patch that is forthcoming. Seems like a good time to pickup the game.
Wow has a great selection of music and it doesn't get mentioned very often. It sets a tone that adds to the environment. Sounds like the explorers get a lot of game play value.

Even with the occassional mishap along the road from launch, ESO is an absolute pearl of a game, and is getting really meaty regular updates. MMO of the year, hands down. LoTR was a wonderful game too, pre ftp, and i have great memories of it. But as the two games stand atm? No doubt about it...
The pics showing ESO highlighting this poll was from the final day of the Semi-Finals. Funcom did the same thing and it's perfectly legal as it promotes the poll for the highest possible sample size.
This however is and has been the log-in screen since after the Semi-Finals.
Also, the level of anti-eso voting here is staggering and goes to show how great the game can be if it still continues to push ahead against those odds.
Awesome to see my beloved lotro here, still playing the game on a daily basis, The community, the visuals (which on ultra high which can be reached pretty easily are fantastic) and the main story particularly is also very good, espeically for Shadows of Angmar, Mines of Moria and Riders of Rohan.I would recommend it to anyone who simply wants to see a huge visualization of middle earth. Every time I come back to the game I go to places like Weathertop (the view is pretty epic) and Evendim and Annuminas again to get a feeling for the world. There are Lots of cool features too like mounted combat, solid player and guild (kinship) housing, and a much needed skills and traits revamp in the last expansion. The music feature and music generally in the game is also brilliant. It really uses the IP to a great extent.
PvP still draws me in mainly for the community even if the fights themselves are still pretty fun, rubber banding and lag however not so much :P. Some of the classes are also some of my favourites in any on-line game, particularly Warden, Minstrel (for the Instruments) and Captain.
It does need more new raids and group content but I'm not sure how much WB are still willing to put into the game, but nevertheless it is still a great game and one of my all time favourites.
I like many played ES) on launch and was a bit disappointed, but considering the good things I'm hearing looks like I'll be trying it again. However I can't vote for it over lotro by a long shot, the only feature that really felt great and much better technically than lotro was the PvP and the but that often turned into a massive blob v blob war like GW2 (which is also pretty great) and therefore got a bit boring. The class variety and choices were also great- puts games like WoW to shame. I have no ill will toward the game and wish it luck. The visuals in ESO were also really really nice, although I had more problems with lag so had to tone it down a bit unfortunately. I think the production values of the game that was already there were really good but the game was just a bit incomplete overall and was pushed out of the door too early (never heard that before jokes *cough* SWtOR)
EVE- Lots of people love it but I never really enjoyed it and found it to be more like accountancy on-line.
TSW- Never played so didn't cast a vote for this section

Going to say it again;
It was a single line on the PATCHER, a little program that runs the updates before you even start the game, not the actual in-game login screen. FunCom Developers did exactly nothing promotional in the game. It was a Community Manager (Who is awesome by the way) who added the message on his own.
Could you please stop spreading something inaccurate? It's factually incorrect and as such is considerably bothering me.
The ESO message itself was indeed a completely legal (and clever) move.

You'll have to show me proof, since all lines on the "PATCHER" as you put it, are cataloged. Also, what company does the community manager work for who updates the launcher? If he doesn't work for Funcom, then I apologize.
Kinda funny how ESO should probably not even be in this Finale. Heck I was a long time player til they slapped us all in the face with garbage 90 day pvp rewards!(42k) If you type "the great mmo face-off of 2014" in google you'll see like half a dozen places campaigning for ESO to win. Kinda pathetic >_>;
My guess is you meant the TSW Patcher, which, in that case I apologize as you weren't specific. I won't edit my above post so people could see where I was possibly in error.
It's ultimately the same thing, a company's community manager putting a line to detail the poll on the patcher/login. It's a way to spread the word, both companies did it and regardless of anything, it's a non-issue and no one game is more at fault.
My picture was to show a few people who were confused and thought it was still up on the login screen for the finals, you were not the person I directed it towards.
Stupid comment about TSW and your comment about TESO suggests you have never played LOTR; a game that manages to blend "story driven" content with old fashioned open-world "grind". And after 7 years of updates; super slick interface; crafting; role-playing; community .... it deserves its place.

Yes, TSW Patcher.
Also, we are going to have to disagree on it being the same thing then. A relative non-issue indeed.

How is the game for alt-holics like myself?
Hmmm...alts. I'm usually an altoholic too but I have found, so far, after making one of each class in ESO, that sticking with one right now is all I need. At the moment. Especially considering that one character can be just about any Role I want and it will eventually see all faction's zones and storylines. That being said, different classes feel different enough to warrant playing them as well. Tons of racial choices as well and again, the whole fluid "role" aspect to building a character helps. Maybe make one character a tank, the other a dps, the next heals, and after that one built for pvp only, or just mix and match it up, lots of choices.
So I would say it's a 50/50 chance to be good for altoholics, all depending on what you do with alts in the end.
So I have ESO/TSW/ and EVE installed and have played all of them in the past week. I voted ESO and EVE. I voted LOTRO over WoW based on immersion, but ESO wins against it in my opinion. Those two games are pretty similar IPs and I feel ESO is basically a huge upgrade.
Originally posted by Athisar I subscribe to both games so it's a tricky one. But lotro wins out for me because it's the underdog, and because it's such a massive game.
LOTRO is old. It's had time to grow, that's why it's massive. TESO launched THIS YEAR and people have been tearing it to pieces for not being WoW. Want to talk about underdogs? TESO doesn't have a bunch of books and movies backing it, OR the years of growth and fixes.
And it's STILL better... Mainly because LOTRO went F2P and no game ever comes back from that.
I must agree with most people here, LotRO should definally beat ESO, if not then its rigged i wonder how many ESO fans have multible accounts here now.

I'm still not sure why people have such a hard time understanding that ESO has a large, active community. Maybe it's jealousy. Maybe it's flat out denial or pure hatred for some reason. It's a good game with way more people playing it than all of you haters want to admit.
Originally posted by FeralLoki I must agree with most people here, LotRO should definally beat ESO, if not then its rigged i wonder how many ESO fans have multible accounts here now.
Based on the age of LoTR (I played it in beta and have a lifetime sub), and the number of players compared to ESO and TSW, I would be very surprised if ESO would possibly lose to it, even with the low percentage currently voting.

I can assure you its a very high number. People have spammed here and in game. I even got a PM about this contest in game. As people have said previously, we all know this isn't a legitimate measure.

KUDOS to the TSW team, though - great fight last round, and, being as I have played TSW and it was pretty neat, I voted for you guys this round.
Lotro isn't bad for such an old game, either, but I'm afraid it doesn't hold a candle to ESO for me.
