Hooray for LOTRO for a very respectable second place!
I am sure that I speak for many in the TSW community when I say that we are pleased as punch to be counted as the third most face-offy MMO of 2014 and we would also like to extend a heartfelt hug to EVE. Though you were counted as the fourth most face-offy MMO of 2014 there is no doubt that you are a most excellent game indeed.
It has been an honour and a priviledge conversing with you wonderfull people through this contest and I wish you all the best in the coming year. May loot rain upon you and your foes fall down before your sword, axe, laser, pointy stick or whatever you got there.

I think it's kind of interesting that the 1st and 2nd place titles are ones that had a pre-existing world/background to use as a skeletal frame to build upon where the 3rd and 4th place games are original IPs that while they may have used themes from other sources, are still original worlds/universes with deep lore to them.
Of course going off of a pre-existing IP is no guarantee of story quality, Warhammer Age of Reckoning I'm looking at you.
I actually eh, kinda forgot to vote in the final round but since I was going to vote ESO and TSW anyway I guess it doesn't matter.
I enjoyed playing ESO until my guild all bailed for Wildstar (lol) and then got nailed with a similar billing issue that someone else mentioned earlier in the thread so stopped playing. TSW is my main go-to game at the moment because I love modern occult conspiracy stuff and it's the closest we'll get to a World of Darkness game now (shakes fist at CCP). I played EVE for a year or so and loved it, and I appreciate everything it does and would probably vote for it against any other game aside from TSW heh. LOTR I only tried briefly when it first came out but for whatever reason I just never really felt it.
Have played and enjoyed all 4 of the games so I dont think there are any losers.

The hate the game gets is amusing. Group think at it's finest. Mostly from people who have either never played it, or not played it recently. It's come a long way.
If there was an award for "most improved" I think ESO would win that also.
Voted ESO and EVE. I've loved ESO ever since beta. I don't care what anyone else says. And I played LOTRO for about a week two years ago just to try it out, got one character to level cap, and it was not even remotely interesting to me. I felt I gave it a good try.
EVE is of course awesome, but I don't feel I have time for the level of organization and involvement it requires. My vote is a little unfair since I haven't played TSW, but it wasn't something I even wanted to try so I feel justified.

My biggest disappointment of 2014 (as far as games go) was that I found out there was supposed to be an Old World of Darkness MMORPG in the works, but it got cancelled.
I looked at Secret World, but I'm not interested in most computer games where I can only be human, or human-like (sorry DDO and LOTRO, I loved playing AD&D 2nd and MERP, but I will always love tabletop above computer games.) MOUL(a) is my one major exception (and a real oddball in the online game world, it seems.)
From what I heard of Eve, it sounds like a good game, but I'm not sure if I'd understand it. I've never been good with spreadsheets and things. I'm actually kind of surprised it lost.
I'm kind of surprised at Wildstar, too. I tried their open beta, and all I can say against it is this: I was looking for something that wasn't WoW. I spent a nice 5 years on it, but I was looking for something different.
I found it in ESO, which I also started playing in Beta, last January. Yes, it was full of bugs. Yes, my early live characters got blocked by bugged quests, but then I'd just explore another build. I'm not playing right now - I check in once or twice a day to pick up my mail - but only because of the changes coming up REAL SOON. In the meantime, I've been RPing a bard in Skyrim (which I haven't played in over a year, so it's fun again. And I'm not using TGM this time. Unless I REALLY need to because, oops, I killed a creampuff dragon, but .. KROSIS? Who the heck is that?! Stand still, you!)

Anyway. I'm surprised Eve lost. From what I heard of it, it's a perfectly good game. I don't think I'd understand it, though, because I've never been one for working with spreadsheets, and I really don't like managing fleets/staff.
As for Lord of the Rings Online, I understand it used to be good, before F2P (and I can understand the problems in that, which is why I prefer to pay $15 a month rather than be bothered by a cash-shop - I'm on a limited, fixed income, so a sub is actually cheaper and more convenient for me.)
As for Secret World, well, I don't mind modern day games, but I'd really rather have Old World of Darkness Online for that (I hear that was in the works, but got cancelled, Yes, I'm behind in the news.) I don't play fantasy/sci-fi/horror games to be a human. I can be a human any time I like. I didn't mind playing AD&D 2nd or MERP, but then, tabletop is another animal completely (which I will always love over computer games.) I have tried STO and SWTOR as f2P, but only for maybe an hour or two each (the Romulan is kind of fun, though, but I'm not used to third person any more.) I also like MOUL(a), but then, I loved Myst enough to just make an avatar that kind of looks like a much cooler version of me. MOUL(a) seems to be a real oddball in computer gaming, though. But t hen, so was Myst.
I'm now looking forward to the upcoming changes in ESO; I'm reserving what quests I have left until I see what's what on the PTR in a few days or next week or whenever. Oh, I've been playing ESO since last January beta, but I only settled on a build a few months ago, so now my highest is only VR9. I've gone back to Skyrim until then. I could have gone back to WoW for the new expansion, but I did try it, and .. uh, got bored really quick. I'm having much more fun RPing a bard (thanks to a mod) and building a Hearthfire house than I would be trying to grind for some garrison (I was interested until Blizz said that they wanted to make crafting cosmetic-only, and that they hate flying. I hate walking on the ground in WoW. Don't mind it in any Elder Scrolls game, though.)

You should pick it up sometime. If you enjoy story driven MMOs you'll likely enjoy it quite a bit. And it's combat system isn't too unsimilar from ESO's. It's among my favorite MMOs too.

newer doesnt mean better and thats what you have here. the new shiny toy is winning where the older game thats much better with a much better story line of course, it is middle earth after all, will lose just because its an older game. not because eso is truely a better game all around. honestly the best game ive ever played overall right out of the box was eq1. you had every race with a home city which lotro didnt have and the entire game was what wow in effect copied and added to. you had a real death penalty besides paying a few gold to get your armor repaird. ive played virtually every game listed and eq1 was overall the best but some ppl didnt like it because of that real death penalty. its too bad. ive got a lifetime sub to lotro and it is a great game and i hope it actually gets to the finish as i hope to be able to make a hobbit and do the entire quest like frodo did. not a single other game out there has that sort of hook in it. its all about lvling and raiding with no real story line in virtually every other game out there. im honestly surprised that wow didnt win since it has so many subscribers and volume ergo more ppl to vote for it.

So great I had a blast of fun with the monster pvp system and the characters animation, running like you had a stick up you ars... Not to mention the blast of fun having to run all dungeons alone because the game is deserted, part because they banned half their veteran players, part because they made the game a casino.
What do these accounts have in common? All created recently and all voting for ESO........ESO fans seem desperate.

Yes, the original World of Darkness games were all set in the modern world. Later 2nd and Revised main books came out eventually, for historical settings (I still have the Wild West books.)
As I said, I'd have preferred that for a modern-day-setting game. Then I could run a Garou and PvP with some vampires. It'd be fun to run with a pack of Bone Gnawer leech-hunters.

In case anyone missed it, LotRO announced that they're going to begin the process of Server Consolidation, whereby they allow players on some really dead servers to choose a brand new server to transfer to so that Turbine can shut that server down. Upwards to half of the servers will be eliminated, according to the people that keep track of the game's server populations.
Yet somehow this game received more votes than Eve, more votes than World of Warcraft, and was in a respectable running against ESO. I asked a couple times back when the voting was still open, and I'm still wondering - Where the hell are all of you LotRO fans? They're about to close a bunch of servers. Lord of the Rings Online can't really be that popular now, can it?
And for the record, I don't play ESO, and have never wanted to. I'm a disgruntled LotRO player that's been watching the game's population shrink month after month after month.
I have a lifetime sub to Lotro but I am currently playing ESO and so I voted that way. Usually I would vote for Lotro, but I'm seeing the developers of ESO doing great things and changing the game, not letting it mire in what "they" think it should be no matter what the community says.

So anyway, for ESO comes out on top over all and that's a big change from my attitude toward it during it's first 3 months of launch. Really enjoying the game now and can't wait for the changes and additional content coming our way in the next year.
I have always voted for LOTRO in these polls even while I have taken off months of time to play other games. There is just so much I have loved about LOTRO over the years, however I finally find myself playing a game that might keep me away for more than just a few months.
I played ESO beta and if things had been left as they were, ESO would not have made a top ten list of mine. Over the holidays I was lured into playing ESO and I am now hooked. The phasing problems still piss me off but the quest and story immersion is unlike anything I have experienced before in an MMO.
I can't vote for bronze since I have never played TSW and the 6 months I spent playing EVE were far too taxing on my brain.

ESO is a fantastic game now and I agree its the best mmo of 2014, and I would argue fast becoming the best mmo to date. That is coming from someone who demanded (and got) a refund just after release, and bought it 6 months later when it matured. You may not like it, but as far as mmorpg's go it ticks all the boxes.
