I realized something today, my first mmorpg was everquest 1 and there was many great things about it, but I realized what really pulled me into the game was the first person view, and realized this is why I cannot get into many mmorpgs outside of a few.
I plan to get eso soon, but it is something I think we need more of, we need more immersive mmorpgs, but some are good as third person like the secret world.

I find myself missing the immersiveness of 1st whenever I am playing a 3rd-person game, too. EQ1's dungeons were spectular, and a large part of that is because you typically were in 1st when plowing through them(narrow corridors and roofs kind of forced you to be).
I really hated the WoW dungeons and how they had no ceilings. It was just so wrong to be in a "dungeon" that didn't even have a ceiling/roof.
I can understand why many games choose 3rd, though. Due to the cramped, confined space of a typical monitor and the FOV in games, sometimes 1st can get a bit hectic and claustrophobic.
I'm hoping, that with all the new VR kits on the horizon, we'll see a massive wave of 1st person stuff flooding in to sync up. VR should help a bit with limited views also.
I would prefer choice rather than forced into either one.
Personally, I can't stand first person view in anything but a shooter. Until they can make weapon animations look even remotely realistic in FPV, then I'm just not interested. Not only that, but I prefer the field of view that third person offers.
My problem is when there is choice they always make one way crappier then the other, yea it would be nice but really I do not expect another greedy company to design something from passion.

I agree, mostly because the only "choice" left for a player if a game is strictly first or third person, is to just not play it if it's not your thing. I know I won't play anything that's only first person, that's the very reason I never played EQ and will never play shooters.

An mmorpg should have the ability to play in first person, yes, but you should also be able to roll out to third person view as well. For myself at least, I prefer to be able to actually see my character, as I tend to customize my characters' appearances a lot. Perhaps it also somehow comes down to my beginning with pen & paper / tabletop rpgs, as my character sheet was my character, along with any illustrations I made to go along with it.
Ultimately, there is no reason an mmorpg can not have first person view, with the ability to roll out to third person.
In theory there is no difference between theory and practice, in practice there is.
If you have a third person view developers inevitably use it to design encounters. Pretty soon you are putting yourself at a major disadvantage by playing in first person view. So while it would be nice to provide the option (and many games have) if you really want to play a first person view game it should be built with no third person view.
In theory, your post probably sounded great in it's conceptual form. In practice, plenty of MMORPGs have already succeeded at doing first to third person views. As a matter of fact, I used to even play EQ as both depending on the area, even though it was obviously more intended toward the first person view (I was constantly battling to play as much as possible in third person, and did so quite well the majority of the time). After EQ, plenty of MMORPGs did an even better job than EQ did on this optional view.
From a business perspective, why limit your customers' options?
It is a trade off for immersion besides if you have the option of both you can still see your creation, look at it this way those epic magic swords you just found can be viewed in first person with full animations instead of third person.
Some people misunderstanding that first person view cause the headaches and motion sickness , but it isn't true.
The main reason cause the headaches are graphic design and gaming pace.
For example , i'm fine with FPS game like counter-strike (a mod) but get sick when play half-life (original).
Even some game in third person view cause me feel sick because of the graphic design and animation .
I fine with playing GTA vice city , but when i play GTA San Andreas , i get sick and want to vomit after 1-2 hours playing .
They're still....just the swords. What about the rest of my character? Look, there's no way i can be convinced to feel even remotely accesible towards 1st-person view in games. Trsut me, i've tried. But like i said, i'd like it to be there as an option for people who prefer it.
Well I am not trying to convince you but apparently you have not played very many first person games if you do not know the many awesome possible animations you can do with a sword.
I disagree, because options give unfair advantages. We need a sandbox mmorpg with 1st person combat, intricate crafting, ect.

Unless they're like me, I turn animations down to the lowest setting, I find them annoying... just like I hate cut scenes and loud background music. Imo, they don't add immersion, they're just "shinies" for those that need them.
When I play I only want to hear the sounds of the woods, crunch of the snow, babble of the creek etc. as I ride through the area, so that should some orc/goblin/whatever come crashing out to attack me I can hear them and be ready for the fight. I'm ok with theme music in towns or during festivals, even a bit of danger music when entering combat, but mostly I prefer ambient sounds and I've yet to hear why there needs to be a symphony belt out across the land as I race towards my next encounter.
<sigh> and why did you switch to "third person"? Was it perhaps because it gave you a better view and an advantage there by? Maybe because some of the boss mechanics are really only doable in third person? etc etc.
If you regularly play in first person, the moment your fellows get to know it you will be getting pressure to change to third person view for the good of the group/raid.
You really let it out of the bag when you refer to first person as an 'optional view' demonstrating your bias towards a third person view for anything 'serious'.
True.
I do like that I have the option of making the content harder for myself with FPV, especially in ESO.
I'm definitely the other way, I dislike 1st person view in most games, but especially in RPGs.
A large part of the "role-playing" for me is gearing up and making my character really look like the role they are supposed to be. I usually take pride in my character's appearance and so I like to be able to see what I've achieved. I like to be able to see them in action when I'm fighting stuff. The more I can see my character, the more attached to them I become and the longer I stay with the game.
When I'm forced into first person, either through lack of 3rd person option or through crappy animations / combat (Skyrim) it definitely lessons the experience. You can see less, you can't enjoy your character's looks, and usually the screen bounces / moves about a lot resulting in a more realistic but less enjoyable viewing experience.
I'm all for options, so if they can have both then have both, but I wouldn't buy an MMO if it only have 1st person.
There's a difference between typical FP view in most MMORPGs and what has been done with ESO.
