When would you suggest a good entry point would be then? Because it's certainly on my radar. I know the expansion is adding quite a bit of features, I certainly heard wrong on how they're releasing stuff, So if I buy horizons I get the whole game? Or did I misunderstand you there?
From what I've heard people say, this expansion seems to be adding what many people wanted in the game. So, yes, if you are waiting for a space sim it should be the best time to check it out.
The question obviously is if they can deliver all that is promised without any bugs.
You may wanna read what he said again. Only ED may count. "Space SIm" = not Skyrim or GW2 mate.
You might want to read my post again, as you clearly don't understand. I never said they were space sims, what I did was compare ED to other games that released expansions, and in the case of GW2 (also a B2P game) showed that many games get content after release. My point was that the poster I quoted has a very odd idea of what "proper release" means, and is something he is just making up and does not make any sense.
Again GW2 and Skyrim were not hurting for content at release, which is what just about everything I've read about ED has suggested, it lacks content. WHy would I buy a game that all I read says that, rather than wait until that is not an issue?

I'm fairly lenient when it comes to this type of thing myself, others not so much.
That said, where have all of those complaints come from? Many things I have read have essentially said wait for the definitive edition, some where down the road.
Which gives me the impression they rushed the game out, like so many space sims before it. X-rebirth anyone?
LOL "wait for the definitive edition" of ED? Well since FD has stated that they have a 10 year plain for ED you are going to be waiting a while, expect a new expansion every year.
I'd assume people mean wait until the game is offered in a packaged deal, where you get more than the base game for a base price.
Each expansion will come with all the expansions and the base game before it. If you purchase Horizons you get the base game, along with all expansion content for Horizons. So no definitive addition.
When would you suggest a good entry point would be then? Because it's certainly on my radar. I know the expansion is adding quite a bit of features, I certainly heard wrong on how they're releasing stuff, So if I buy horizons I get the whole game? Or did I misunderstand you there?
You are correct, if you purchase Horizons you get the base game as well. I expect that all future expansions will be done this way (i.e. they will come with all content that proceed them, just like GW2).
Currently I would say get Horizons ($59.99), making a $45 purchase for the base game just means you get to play it 2 months earlier. But I find the base game a lot of fun and have put in a lot of hours into it. When the base game was on sale for $26 it was easy to say just buy it now, it would only cost you an extra $12 to play 3 months earlier. If you do purchase the base game you get a discount on purchases Horizons and brings its price down to $45.

Yes, Horizons includes the base game but you can only play any part of ED when Horizons launches (couple of months.) If you want to play now you still have to buy the base game and then the Horizons expansion (at a discount.) If you don't already have it, the better deal obviously is to pre-order Horizons or just wait.

I'm looking at it from a purely retail perspective (as that's the only way I'd buy it). So I'd assume by the time that's available all of that would be together?
Retail? I find it very unlikely it will show up at any stores, perhaps steam. Even if it shows up on steam, CIG have already stated that many of the features they have talked about will not be in the launch version. Planetary exploration (the Mass Effect style) will be after launch, many of the concept ships people have purchased will be after launch. So no SC will not have everything at launch, they will continue to add to it just like ED.
Well it's another wait for me then. I can't think of a space sim that has seen a proper release in years.
LOL what are you talking about, ED had a proper release. Are you saying Skyrim didn't have a proper release because it had an expansion? Are you saying that GW2 didn't have a proper release because it has an expansion? Your statement makes very little sense, since when is it a bad thing to keep releasing content for a game? Since when is it bad to release free content for an MMO?
Almost every review I saw of Elite suggested the game needed a lot more content. Skyrim nor GW2 were hurting for content at release.
I agree that ED did not ship with a lot of content, but it had enough for many people to put in hundreds of hours, it just depends on what type of player you are. If you are willing to set your own goals, you can find your self putting in a lot of hours, the actual gameplay of ED is amazing. I would also say that for only 2 years of development, ED has a ton of content, with more being added this past year. Sadly with a niche title you just can't expect the same amount of content for you money as you can from a game that will sell millions of copies.
Why not to wait? Simple, the game is fun now, there are no other space sim that comes even close. Perhaps I am just used to my entertainment being outside of the norm, meaning I have to pay a premium for that content. I play Hockey, Hockey for an hour of playing costs way way more than most any other sport. But I am willing to pay it because I like to play Hockey.

Seems pretty definite. They've stuck to that "Holidays 2015" date all along and they still are.
And I agree with others, although I haven't played it all that much, what's there is already fun in its own right.

Thanks for the info, just to be clear I'm not trying to hate on ED, I'm highly interested in it, it's just a genre that I've been burnt by one too many times. More so than MMORPGs actually. So I take a wait until the negativity stops coming in approach to buying them now.

Might just have to grab it after Christmas then. Cool
The thing is this con artist and crook thinks he is protected by Kickstarter terms. I pretty much can assure you when dealing with embezzlement of this kind of money he will be facing some criminal charges and serious jail time. You can't just steal million upon millions and say oops sorry, there is an accountability and some of these investors could afford to hire some pretty high end lawyers or hitmen for much less than they invested in SC.
And that dear friends is how naysayers kill a 30+ year reputation and a project which is still running based on no facts or experience but rather on pure fear, uncertainty and doubt. Oh and how they get themselves sued for defamation too.
Check my other posts. Not saying that CR hasnt or has done any of these things, but psiic and those like him will make sure this project never sees the light of day.
You misunderstand me, I have money in this.. well I have money in the original kickstarter for the game we were promised that had its money stolen to make a different game. That being said, you are right there is no evidence, but when the people working for the company say there is a looting of the coffers then I sit up and listen. All I am saying is IF he is embezzling as he has been accused kickstarter will NOT be able to protect him. The DA will get involved then they will bring in forensic accountants and make them account for where the money went. If it turns out most of it went into his new Tesla or new house on the beach I can pretty much state he will be going to jail. Kickstarter does not protect against being a crook, it only protects kickstarter for when its users turn out to be crooks.

All signs point that they are going to release it this holiday, FD so far have been very good at releasing content when they say they will. Remember Horizons launch is just the first in a year worth of expansions, purchases Horizons gets you multiple updates. I would like to point out that the Base game will also be getting free content with the release of Horizons, update 1.5 (ships) will release at the same time as Horizons, and the crafting and looting system also will be coming to the base game.

Implying that there are two "sides" to global warming or evolution or that there is a "greyer truth" suggests that the science isn't well understood or that the record isn't extensive. It is. It has been for at least half a century (or more):
Global warming;
. . .
Evolution;
. . . I thought you had an insightful article, so I'm confused why you would bring this as an example into the argument. It doesn't support your position, and respectfully, it only undermines your credibility.
It's never irresponsible to suggest it's prudent to consider alternative explanations. It happens to be one of the fundamental elements of the scientific process. Good science, like good conversation, demands that you explore the absurd with an open mind and while acknowledging the deepest truth. That is that you don't know what you don't know.
When you've been around a while, you learn that just because TV tells you all the scientists agree on something, it doesn't really mean it's correct. History happens to hold a wealth of examples of periods where scientists all held something to be true, only to be found wrong later.
I do find it amusing that you immediately assume my views on both examples, which I just arbitrarily pulled out of the air, are opposed to your own. My wife is a Zoologist, and I'm very familiar with the concepts of evolution and genetics and have never found anything in them that I specifically disagreed with.
With respect to Climate Change... well, I'm closer to the fence on that one. It sounds plausible, even likely, but there are a lot of pretty critical questions that never seem to be answered. ...Actually, that's probably inaccurate. I do believe in it, I just hate all the bad data being slung around in support of it. Anytime someone tries to convince the world of climate change with a chart that only goes back 100 years, I get irritated. For all the truth in the argument, there is an incredible amount of hyperbole being dished out along side it.
Neither of which is really salient to the point, which is that when you assume your position is the only position, then you are by definition, close-minded. That's not a good spot to be, regardless of the topic.
...maybe I should have used aliens or Atlantis instead... That might have been less... tangent-forming.
First it was global warming, but that didn't work so Gore wanted it to be climate change. Never believed we could cause climate to change, or we could control the weather. I do believe we can blow up the earth. But what I tell people instead of making the United States to keep changing shit and costing us more cash, have China change first. If in the long run we start to see any difference then maybe we can start doing little changes. But over all I see no reason for it and look at it as nothing more than a scam just like CR.
Oh you give any scientist enough cash for research he will come up with anything you want. After all numbers can be changed to show you anything you want.
I just want to say that you can't simply compare the development of fallout with a space "sim".
Bethesda really likes to make their games not on rails unless you want to focus on the main story. With npcs having a routine everyday and features like befriending people or killing them this contributes in a lot of possible outcomes they have to code for each npc.
I'm not saying a space sim is a walk in the park, but no mmo has the same amount of freedom the bethesda games have which is understandably considering they are not mmos.
People seem to think Bethesda RPGs have this tremendous open world / sandbox "freedom" factor. I've said this recently. They don't. It's an illusion created by breaking a large story down into multiple mini arks that can be experienced simultaneously. They are as Them park as they come with the only difference being that you have the freedom to bounce between each ark. But really that's it. Within each ark, the game is as linear and on rails as they come. So I'm not so sure this is an overly complicated mechanic to incorporate into an MMO.

I tried making a game with similar features it's VERY complicated and time consuming but I was doing it alone.
You have to code every single npc with a rotation throughout the day till night time. You have to also give them speech if they speak with other npcs (And obviously you), different speeches if they have any quests affecting them and speeches if you attack the village/them. If any of the story or mini quests affects the town you have to update every npc that is left OR new npcs with new routines and it's starts to get really complicating going onwards with that kind of thought.
Now that is done, you have to update every single one of them regardless if you are inside a dungeon or outside. That is a pretty hefty load for an mmo.
Remember any expansion, tweaks etc you plan to add/tweak/fix in the future will have to keep in mind which npcs it also affects. It's not something you do once and be done with it. That is why Gw2 despite it having similar features it's not that indepth. If you played at launch, certain events where hanging and getting stuck or not work at all.
SOTA is the only Kickstarter I've backed so far. And I have been happy with that experience. I'm usually pretty liberal with my recreational spending but I am surprisingly conservative on backing kick starters lol.

OK, I think i get where you are coming from. I may have misunderstood your earlier post. But even still, you are actually hitting on one of the core issues I have with Bethesda RPGs. There is very little connection with what you have accomplished. Every now and again a city guard might make an off comment about one of your active quests, but that's it. My 1st play-thgouh of Skyrim got to be progressively more and more ridiculous as I had ended up doing the Companions Ark last. IT's just how it worked out. So here I am. World famous Dragonborn, Thane and savior (I went with the Imperials on that run) of Whiterun. So I run down into the Companion's quarters and there's Vilkas and Kodlak. Facepalm 1: Vilkas -- "I don't even know who this outsider is"
What rock do you live under? You miht recall the dragonborn thing....dragon attack Thane of whiterun followed up by repelling the Stormcloak invasion.
Facepalm 2: Aela "I've heard you might be stronger than you look"
I still don't understand why people are spending money on a game you haven't played or even seen. lol You guys that are paying real money for ships in a game that you have never played are in some fantasy faery tale. lol Someone please explain this to me because I think they are in some alternate reality or something.

Ok I was trying to quote a post I had made in a previous thread. Oh well.
Bethesda doesn't really do that good of a job at it IMO.
I will say subjectively W3 handled this better imo, but they also had the benefit of having to keep A LOT fewer balls juggling in the air in regards to related, and unrelated quest lines. I'm not actually sure you could make an open ended quest system the scope of Skyrims and not end up with gufaw moments. Certainly not and get it done before your retirement, simply too many variables.
EDIT the physical story board alone would prob be larger than the average office space footprint.

What? Riding off into the sky from Dragon's reach on the back of a dragon, marching into Sovengarrde and killing Alduin was child's play right?
Facepalm 4: Ria "I killed a bear today, what did you kill?"
Oh, I'm not even going there.
Anyway, this list goes on and on...
Well, I never said the game is perfect, it surely has it flows just like you pointed out. (Skyrim was the least one I played from the series honestly) I honestly never finished any of the main story in any elder scrolls game because they weren't really engaging and honestly bad. The only game I completed 100% was Fallout 3. I really enjoyed that game despite the numerous bugs and the okayish main story. (Although I really liked the virtual reality game part despite the numerous crashes which where rage inducing)
My first comment was simply regarding the games development. The bethesda games take a lot more time to develop because of some of the coding required above. I probably missed some steps. I gave up on my game attempt because I forgot to take notes and the engine (Rpg maker xp) wasn't handling all that amount of processing all at once. Sometimes it would work flawlessly, other times a step would get skipped and certain npcs would get stuck in a wall until the next step teleports them.

I can understand wanting a space sim, and yes Chris Roberts helped make Wing Commander one of the great space games of all time. But people fail to see he did not do it on his own and there was better leadership above him. The problem here is CR has no one to tell him NO, he only has YES people around him. The guy is in way over his head. He has no clue how to say no and keep on course with his original idea. He is always trying to make things that will never work in the game work. Where it leads to months of lost time in creating the game.
Would love to see the books and understand how he spent the money.
Hope that made sense, having a difficult day today with my medication.

Sooo. I might have to buy a joystick and ED. That looks exciting.
And I can't help but say it.... The way ED is releasing content is, in all fairness, the way CR should've done SC. So what if it got a bad rap from randoms on the internet for a perceived lack of content at release? Backers that were into the game would all be privy to the fact that more content was definitely coming in the near future to help flesh out the game. Once said content is released at a fair price, you start building an honest loyalty among your fans. Kudos to Frontier.

Well, sure, but you could have picked anything... instead you chose 2 topics that have been bandied about in the media, suggesting that there really was some credible doubt or that the matter was the subject of question. It tends to leave open the door to... alternative primary school curricula?
I didn't learn about global warming from TV, by the way... it's kind of different when you've actually stood in front of glacial moraines and can see 'okay, so many decades ago that glacier used to come to *here* at its maximum, now it's way up *there*'.
There are also things like the rock record that can say a lot about climate in terms of determining periods of glaciation, sea levels, etc. (hence the examples of striae and isotope ratios). Carbon Dioxide and Methane are both greenhouse gases contained in permafrost, which is decaying (something I've also seen in person). Enough of this gets released into the atmosphere, and things will heat up. It's basic chemistry.

I'm being critical of my favorite video game ever. In spite of these flaws.
But my point was that I was agreeing with Bloodaxe. But as far as how difficult to put into an MMO? I really have no idea. There are follower mods that use "Quest Aware" AI and they do a fairly decent job keeping up with you. I wonder how difficult it would be to create a core mechanic based on that that keeps a running tab of your accomplishments that all NPCs can tie into. I'm not a developer so I admit that was coming out of my ARSE.

When the base game was on sale for $26 it was easy to say just buy it now, it would only cost you an extra $12 to play 3 months earlier. If you do purchase the base game you get a discount on purchases Horizons and brings its price down to $45.

There are tons of little details we plan to tweak or fix, but I thought it would be great for you guys to see where we’re up to with this."
Oh you give any scientist enough cash for research he will come up with anything you want. After all numbers can be changed to show you anything you want.

Yeah, because Legendary tempered double enchanted Drtagonscale armor looks pretty weak doesn't it?
Facepalm 3: Skjor "You still have to prove yourself whelp"
Would love to see the books and understand how he spent the money.
Hope that made sense, having a difficult day today with my medication.
