Rubbish, I suppose people can't write about WWII, Ancient Egypt, or George Washington because they weren't there.
No, but in this situation people should probably only vote for games they actually played during the title's heyday.
It was left to the writers to pick their favourite MMOs. I'm assuming they'd pick ones they played.

But I'd like to know how old @carotid thinks you have to be for your vote to be eligible.

i think the only ones getting old is some of these haters which played gw2 for 1 month and don't have the right to guess. almost all games in the top5 have shown there worth. for me wow is overrated but i do get why it's in the top5. top5 for me 5. WoW 4. GW1 3. SW:TOR 2. EQ 1. GW2 and why gw2: it's the example of a good core game with lots of potential still. *graphics still improving since launch *loads of added features for free *ingame coin/gem exchange system *your own choice on how to level up may it be PvE/PvP/WvW related *able to play for free now if you wanna test the game out *and basicly the game starts at max lvl80 *you get the upcoming expansion together with the core game the list could go on but long story short: for a game which doesn't force you to empty your wallet it gives you alot to play with no matter what kinda player you are. and keeps developing itself on alot of things. [graphics/gameplay/new features/class balances]

I will be sad if WoW is number 1 but not shocked.
but it has dominated the MMORPG market for a decade for good reason.
Wow dominated the mmorpg market for a decade for one reason: it's the most grind mmo all time! People keep playing it for the fun, but ALSO because they want that 0.00000000000001% chance raid drop mount that'll take 1 year doing the same raid everyday to get! And in a world of competition, many fell attracted to WoW because they wanted to show off they were "better" than the rest of the world on the most massive mmo. this list = someone who didn't had acess to internet before 2004/2005 trying to talk about mmos. Great mmo of all times list must be based on IMPACT ATH THE TIME IT WAS LAUNCHED (so UO and EQ would fight for number 1) and INOVATION (let alone, the most inovative game of all this list is still UO, since, till this day, no other mmo acomplished most the systens UO had at the time). I know it's not even going to show up on the list but... the realm online came out before meridian 59 and reached the same amount of public. Meridian 59 kind of closed before coming back as a f2p open source, while TRO is still a p2p mmo WITH loyal subscribers, and was the FIRST to have a housing system (you were given a house right after character creation), character customization (head type, complexion, hair style, hair color, ears type, nose type, mouth type, eye brows, eye color, eyes type, beard style, height and weight)

You would think, but I'd be very surprised if many of them played EVE long enough to warrant it's 6th place rating.

I suspect some titles received votes based on their reputations rather than actually being played.

Oh I get it. You don't agree with the list so you claim Bill is to young to make such a list.

All I was wondering, seeing how Bill is probably in his early/mid 30s, is how old he'd need to be for his list to please you?

That is simpleton logic. This is not a what is the best out today, it is the best of all time. If I were to do a best fighter aircraft of all time the P-51 would be my #1 because of its innovativeness and the impact it had at the time of its service. I would not compare it to the F-22, that would be stupid and it misses the whole point. Would Babe Ruth be considered the best baseball player of all time if he played against today's pitchers? Doubt it. Yet most agree he is the #1 baseball player of all time. That is how "all time" lists work. This is a subjective list rather than objective.

If you do it the way it should be done, there is a great argument for UO as the #1 MMO of all time, WoW and EQ as well. Is WoW the best MMO today? I don't think so. Best of all time? Can't argue it a whole lot myself.

Well, since all he is really doing is using one logical fallacy to belittle the collective opinion of 30+ mmorpg.com staff, my guess is that he wouldn't be pleased with anything - he'd just come-up with something else to dismiss any list or game he doesn't personally like.

I mean, the guys is a Norwegian death metal head who just joined the site last year, how much could he possibly know? :)

What is the best color of all time?

Hard to be subjective on matters of personal taste.

Did you think for any amount of time before posting the worst analogy I will see today? You even got the subjective/objective part wrong. And if you consider yourself a journalist and are doing a list like this it is your job to be objective.

UO is probably the Babe Ruth of MMORPG's. Doesn't hold up at all compared to newer releases.

But like people have stated numerous times, subjective.

This list is ridiculous. I hate EvE but for that game to not be in the top 3 let alone top 5 is absurd. Also FFXIV, I like the game but whats so innovative about it? Hard to take a list like this serious, was a joke from the get go.
Eve is a niche game....It has done well but not top 5 sorry....Point and click and no avatar
While I don't disagree that EVE is a niche game it recently implemented WASD ship movement and has had Avatars for many years now.

    Just saying....
I'm pretty sure he meant animated avatars. But yeh, EVE should definitely be in the top 5 considering it's design, scope, dynamic gameplay, being one of the few games that charges a sub and being able to maintain that model with subscription growth for a very long period,..etc,...etc.  Personally, I don't play EVE though I tried several times.  I do, however, recognize what it does well which when summed up is a lot more than most games.

Not sure if you can take this serious when Neverwinter Nights released on the AOL platform was considered the first graphical MMO..... which was released in 1991. Yet some how Meridian was given this title.

EVE has had animated avatars since Incarna, about 4 yrs now.

Granted,  they are trapped in the Captain's Quarters for now, but they are very much animated.
