SWTOR doesn't even deserve a mention! SWG definitely should be 1 if not UO. WoW doesn't deserve to be on the list either just because it was popular. Most of what wow did degraded the genre into the garbage we now have instead of what we should have had after the early greats.

WoW is a game you curse as a mmorpg veteran, something that destroyed and dumbed down the genre.

You often deny applications to guild if the player played WoW as their first or only mmorpg.

Significant impact on [geek / gaming] culture does indeed have weight on a list like this, but on a list like this, not this one, so thusly titled. And here's why. Geek culture is so powerful that it well deserves its own list, perhaps titled The Greatest Geek Culturally Significant MMORPGs of All Time. To include it merely as a 'but also' I feel weakens what it means. Also, it skews the results. Notice that Ultima Online is at #7. Because cultural impact was included in the factoring, UO (and / or arguably Meridian 59) should be at #1. Why? Because without UO, MMORPGs would not be what they are today. More so, they simply wouldn't be. UO was the catalyst for each MMORPG created after it. They have had their individual impacts because UO had its' first. So, each of their incremental impacts feed back to UO, increasing its impact exponentially. Now, if the list had left out the cultural impact, and left it solely at "technical and community achievements of each title, but also its wider effect on the MMO genre as a whole", I could see UO being at #7, or even in the top 5.
MMORPG were a matter of time.

Kyleran:  "Now there's the real trick, learning to accept and enjoy a game for what it offers rather than pass on what might be a great playing experience because it lacks a few features you prefer."

John Henry Newman: "A man would do nothing if he waited until he could do it so well that no one could find fault."

FreddyNoNose:  "A good game needs no defense; a bad game has no defense." "Easily digested content is just as easily forgotten."

LacedOpium: "So the question that begs to be asked is, if you are not interested in the game mechanics that define the MMORPG genre, then why are you playing an MMORPG?"

Half the people posting probably never played some of these games, or completely biased toward some. This list is for amusement purposes and nothing else, so I would not sweat it.
Bingo. Plus it's voted on just by writers. What I'll likely do is take the 35 when we're all said and done and host another survey to have the community rank theirs and compare.
Well there is the problem because most writers don't actually play most of the games they write about either. They play something for a day or a week and write all kinds of biased opinions to suck up to developers. No real MMO player would put FF14 ahead of DAOC, that is just idiocy. Neither GW2 or SWTOR should be in the top 5 either. Top 5 should be EQ1, DAOC, UO, SWG and WoW in some order that people will base upon their personal preference. You could make an argument for AC or EVE in there but they never really had as wide of an appeal. Meridian 59 is a MUD, so I guess I don't even think of it in the same category.
You are assuming a whole lot here mate, about the writers, about players, about quality. I am glad however that you have the qualifications to seperate the 'real MMO players' from the fake ones...

I think your top 5 blows, whatever order you put those games in, fortunately I know the difference between opinion and fact, else I might have been thinking you were not a 'real' MMO player.

I love these types of lists, they always bring out the people that think there is anything more to it then opinion.

    Kyleran on yours sincerely

'But there are many. You can play them entirely solo, and even offline. Also, you are wrong by default.'

Ikcin in response to yours sincerely debating whether or not single-player offline MMOs exist...

'This does not apply just to ED but SC or any other game. What they will get is Rebirth/X4, likely prettier but equally underwhelming and pointless.

It is incredibly difficult to design some meaningfull leg content that would fit a space ship game - simply because it is not a leg game.

It is just huge resource waste....'

It looks like the top 5 will be: 1) EQ 2) WoW 3) SWG 4) GW2 5) ESO.

My number one mmo at the moment is gw2 but for me WoW should take first place, great product, made its name and retained an impressive population. #Respect

Wow will be number 1...simply because if it wasn't for WoW you wouldn't have 90% of the MMOs that are out there today.  EQ should be number 1 or 2 because it's the one that started making MMOs cool to play.
Cool is subjective. From my gaming circle only carebears and sheep played EQ. Real MMOs had PvP/PK systems.
i played EQ on a pvp server but your post is rather contradictory since saying only "real" mmo's have pvp systems, as if thats not also a subjective statement?
