Didnt even notice it until I read your post. That's a shame. TR was such a fantastic (but very buggy) game.
GW2... yeah. EQ should be higher than both SWG and GW2. SWG was a fantastic sandbox, but it's being overrated a bit here. I can't even think of someone who's played both, and enjoys gw2 more than gw1.
EQ should be #2 there is no dimension where GW2 should be ahead of EQ on this list.
Absolutely agree...I wouldnt have GW2 in the top 25 myself, just not a good game.....I think they had to put WoW #1 just out of sheer numbers, but EQ1 easily number 2.
So Neither Aoin or ESO make this list?
Some could argue Aoin is a top 5. I never played it but I never heard anything bad about it.
ESO can be debated but it has to be better than 5 or 6 of the names on the list especially since those 5 or 6 arent even MMOs.
You can use the 'opinion' excuse all you want but no way no how Aoin isnt on a list of the top 35 MMOs people can think of.
I never understood the love affair with Aion...I thought it was awful when I tried it.

Different strokes.
For me Aion is top 10 - a fantastic game.
Gotta ask, do you work for NCSoft? Seems like you do =-)
WoW is a cheap first place. Numbers do not make a great MMO. They stole most of their ideas from other MMOs and when a new MMO would come out with something new and exciting, they would poach it and add it to their game before the new game could release. I did lose 6 years of game time to WoW but its far from the top and best MMO out there. But from a business stand point I get why someone would say so. Over all thats my only gripe with this list.
And this is one of the reasons why they earned their #1 place. They did iterations of existing content and made it far superior than everyone else. You see the same thing happening to other companies and they all look like straight up clones because they dont try hard enough. Blizzard always add their own twist to the whole thing while other companies make a poor attempt at everything, including polishing said content.
Honestly, if you have played a lot of these games, then I might value your opinion. But CLEARLY you have NOT, GW2 2ND place....not a chance this game is in the top 25. And yes I have played most of them.
Since that is clearly your personal opinion that doesnt affect reality, ill share my own personal opinion too. If GW2 doesnt have a place in the top 25 nothing else other than WoW has a place in the top 25 either. Be all the white knight you like but just because you dont like a particular game doesnt make it bad.
As for the full list i personally think TSW should be higher than Rift.
Great to see the love for EQ in the comments. Nothing has ever achieved anything like the experience that we all had when playing EQ. I would rate it as the absolute number one, for me. I actually love the fact it is the highest game up there that was based on original lore. WoW was based on an already successful bunch of games, GW2 a sequel, SWG on a major franchise. EQ did it on its own strength.
Yet you cannot deny the number one position of WoW. It pushed the entire genre onto the main stage, even if you can debate if that's been good or bad for the genre. It just did so many things right for the first time and made a good game in a genuinely "unfriendly" genre in terms of playability. It "mainstreamed" everything and added so many players to the worldwide playerbase, not only to itself.
And yes, even tho I like the game I am quite appalled seeing GW2 on #2 in stead of EQ. It's a slick game but nothing more. I never played SWG so can't really judge on that.
EverQuest should have been #1, for 2 main reasons. 1) It's still around and has a following, and 2) Even the developers of WoW admitted to saying in a documentary, that if it wasn't for EverQuest, any MMORPG of a 3d nature would not likely exist,. AS the proved the model could work.
No matter what anyone says there is no denying this, no way to debunk it, as it is the truth. Also on a side note as these facts where clearly ignored in the write up of the games, it does make one wonder if the person who wrote this article is one of those WarCraft fanboi, that sees nothing wrong with it.
Not very big into WoW, but i can agree that it deserves the top spot. Glad to see DAoC in the top 10, it being my favorite game of all time i think it should have been a little higher on the list.
Get ready for even more butt hurt because a given game either wasn't on the list, not rated high enough or rated too high. Oh, and the fact that WoW was rated # 1 is going to enrage a good many people. I don't completely agree with this list but I'd be just nit picking if I made a fuss about it.

Remember, I live in a world where juggalos and yugioh players are real things.
they should at least also have a marker next to them if they no longer exist (shutdown).
Never played SWG but it certainly would not be in the top 5 in my listing, especially since its not been in existance for a few years now.
Can anyone tell me why GW2 is so high up?... i went back several months after the launch and went on one of the low lvl alts. Was hardly anyone around doing the zone events and was really tedious doing them solo. Was fun at launch when it was populated any lots of people around but not solo.
So it must be the pvp that makes this so high up?... but then again ESO pvp much the same but not even on the list *confused* or did the world get populated again so most not doing events solo?
Still loads of people around.
It is a likely contender to the 2nd most populated MMO in the west.

Opinions are not to be debated as they are something personal, but as someone stated previously, I do think that games like ESO should have made it in the list. The fact that it isn't makes me question the notion of reality of the voters... I mean, no one is debating the sucess of GW2 or WoW but ESO was a bigger phenomenon than some of the lower ranked games for sure...
If you did a rating on many of these games today by posters, most of the older games would fare very poorly as you had to be there at time to experience them. Just look at the comments about SWG, which many did not get to play.
Everyone's opinion is different, I for one, did not like GW2. Just personal preference. I also think ESO is at least in the top 10. I never understood why NCsoft killed City of Heroes, it still had a decent population at the end and still is a better game then some on that list.
Of the 35 they listed, this is how I would have listed them:
1-World of Warcraft
2-Star Wars Galaxies
3-City of Heroes
4-EverQuest
5-Guild Wars 2
6-EVE Online
7-Ultima Online
8-Star Wars: The Old Republic
9-The Secret World
10-Lord of the Rings Online
11-Age of Conan
12-Rift
13-Anarchy Online
14-Runescape
15-Everquest 2
16-Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning
17-Vanguard: Saga of Heroes
18-TERA
19-Planetside 2
20-Final Fantasy XIV
21-Dark Age of Camelot
22-Shadowbane
23-Lineage 2
24-Darkfall
25-Final Fantasy XI
26-Asheron’s Call
27-Meridian 59
28-Wizard101
29-Fallen Earth
30-Lineage
31-Planetside
32-Path of Exile
33-WildStar
34-Ragnarok Online
35-A Tale in the Desert
However, I am disappointed that Elder Scrolls Online did not make the list. ESO is one of the better MMOs out there and as such it was a mistake leaving it off. I would have placed ESO 4th.
I would like to know why ESO is not on the list.
Frankly, I'm shocked too. ESO was up there for me, but we polled around 40 writers and staffers, and not enough voted for ESO. Here's hoping it makes it in when we do this again in a couple years.
It would be interesting if you polled the readers with the same list of games.
HINT!

GW2 and SWG are a bit too hight on the list. Below EVE would be a better spot for them.
