Of the 35 they listed, this is how I would have listed them:

However, I am disappointed that Elder Scrolls Online did not make the list. ESO is one of the better MMOs out there and as such it was a mistake leaving it off. I would have placed ESO 4th.

I would like to know why ESO is not on the list.
ESO likely did not make the list as it was, and still suffered from numerous problems. THe frist being is that you can all but solo the game, which ruins the MMORPG feel and social model that is a MMO to start with (and yes I been playing it since beta).

The other problem is that the developers are ignoring the problems starting players are having where quested dungeons and instances are shared. This makes leveling alot harder for new players as there being ganked and can't get the XP there supposed to be getting here.

There are also a few other problems that ESO devs have ignored that give it that, incomplete game feel. As such I will honestly be surprised if it makes any list out there in the top 100.

I will add another vote for ESO it ain't perfect but sure should be on this list. I thought you had Asheron's call in a spot worthy of it impact on the genre. WOW at 1 is a no brainer. All in all a list that also adds credence to your site as by in large ya'all love the same stuff we do.

Eso was voted MMO of the year on this site at the beginning of the year, and lets compare the reviews of eso ob this site to say aoc lol. It is also one of the most improved MMO since then, it's not no 1 but should be up there for anyone who understands mmorpg.  I don't think this is really a mmorpg site driven by people who love mmorpg.  joke website, deleting my account lol.

    rpg/mmorg history: Dun Darach>Bloodwych>Bards Tale 1-3>Eye of the beholder > Might and Magic 2,3,5 > FFVII> Baldur's Gate 1, 2 > Planescape Torment >Morrowind > WOW > oblivion > LOTR > Guild Wars (1900hrs elementalist) Vanguard. > GW2(1000 elementalist), Wildstar

Now playing GW2, AOW 3, ESO, LOTR, Elite D

OK, hopefully-tactfully-written rant inc... I suppose the executive summary should read "EverQuest got robbed." So you can skip to the next post if you don't want to read it. :)
Like pretty much everyone with an opinion, I have small quibbles with most things on this list. If you were to give us a list of these games and ask us to order it, I'm sure we'd all have slightly different outcomes. So I'm not talking about those little differences of opinion. But EverQuest not being #1 (ok, fine. #2) on this list is ... and I hate to use the term ... an "outrage."
Honestly I fully agree there, and to be honest there is so much praise givin Warcraft in this article that it makes me wonder if it was written with a objective view point. Just saying.

ESO not making the top 35 list is a big insult to the MMORPG genre, considering ESO was voted best MMORPG of 2014 by actual players, on this site.

ESO should be at bare minimum in the top 10 MMOs of all time.

Guild Wars 2? Is this a joke? Is this just promotion because of an upcoming expansion? That was the worst game I have ever paid for, in my entire life...

I mean, no one is debating the sucess of GW2 or WoW but ESO was a bigger phenomenon than some of the lower ranked games for sure...
ESO on list.....excuse me...hahahahahahahahahaha...sorry that game (which I pay + for and still play it) has way too many bugs. The game is a disaster, heck Wildstar has less bugs and that is saying a lot. They can't even make a good Launcher for it. Also I played most of day today other than in city which maybe I seen 10 people outside of city I have run across no one. The game is dying and the devs don't care.

Heck they won't even answer any questions the players ask. Only list that game deserves to be on is the worse game list and it would be close to #1 if not #1.

ESO is far from dying lol. It's one of the most populated MMORPGs in the West, if not the most populated now that it released on the Consoles. PS4 and XBOX1 sold millions of copies. Not to mention ESO retained more than 1mil Subs even as a P2P MMO, it has probably at least 2mil players on PC as B2P now.

Comparing Wildstar with ESO must be a joke though..I won't even go into detail as it's obvious why ESO is by far superior game. Besides why the hell would you even pay subscription and still play ESO if it's so bad >.>

Like most of us said, this list is so much fail.

CoH, GW2 and WoW higher than DaoC? thats just a big joke.
Its clear this "jury" are players that didnt play mmorpgs pre-WoW.

EQ, UO, DaoC, Eve and Lineage should be top 5, all defining a part of the mmorpg genre.
GW2 and WoW did nothing to define the genre other than "having alot of players"
There are mmorpgs with more players than both of them.
WoW is a carboncopy of its predecessors and havent invented anything on their own.
Having WoW at nr1 is an insult to the games before it that it stole everything from.

80% of the playerbase left GW2 after the first 2 months, and its for a reason.
The game is overhyped, has a bad combatsystem, no progression and gets boring very fast.
Even Rift managed to keep a higher % of their initial playerbase for a longer time.

CoH and SWG beeing just behind is ok, with Rift, AC and FFXIV just behind.

    1. Ultima Online
    2. Dark Age of Camelot
    3. Everquest
    4. EVE
    5. Lineage
    6. City of Heroes
    7. Star Wars Galaxies
    8. Meridian 59
    9. World of Warcraft
    10. Guild Wars 2
    11. Rift
    12. Asherons Call
    13. Final Fantasy XIV
    14. Lord of the rings Online
    15. The Secret World
    16. Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning
    17. Anarchy Online
    18. Final Fantasy XI
    19. Star Wars: The Old Republic
    20. WildStar
    21. Lineage 2
    22. Everquest 2
    23. TERA
    24. Darkfall
    25. Path of Exile
    26. Planetside
    27. Runescape
    28. Age of Conan
    29. Wizard101
    30. Fallen Earth
    31. Ragnarok Online
    32. Planetside 2
    33. Shadowbane
    34. Vanguard: Saga of Heroes
    35. A Tale in the Desert

i have been playing it from beta, there is no way you can backup any of those made up numbers. IF they would of had 1m subs they would of never went B2P and that sir is a fact. XBOX1 and PS4 are losing people real fast mostly because they refuse to put text chat in. Only reason they are even keeping players on console is they allow no code and anyone can install it.

I still have a sub because my game cards have not run out. I was hoping they would work everything out and start fixing bugs but they refuse to do that and just about every problem someone has they blame it on their ISP of system. Just liek the launcher from 2 patches ago, but yep turned out it was their coding.

I could go on and on and believe me I want the game to survive but with people like Lambert and other developers it isn't going to get better don't even get me started on vet justice system. Or on ESO Live which is a joke in itself. I just hope they can get some good developers that really understand Elder Scrolls and make it what it could have been.

I could go on and list every problem but I have playoffs and grand kids to watch.

My guess is that ESO didn't make the list because the writers were still pissed due to the fact that instead of delivering Skyrim online we got a standard theme park MMO with an Elder Scrolls skin.

    Rift before EQ2?
EQ2 has more mmorpg in one byte of code than Rift can ever think of.

But then, the Trion as always been strong among this site's staff.

Good launcher?  You load the launcher, it updates and you hit play.  What are you wanting from a launcher?

If you did a rating on many of these games today by posters, most of the older games would fare very poorly as you had to be there at time to experience them.   Just look at the comments about SWG, which many did not get to play.

Everyone's opinion is different, I for one, did not like GW2.  Just personal preference.  I also think ESO is at least in the top 10.  I never understood why NCsoft killed City of Heroes, it still had a decent population at the end and still is a better game then some on that list.
Not true in the slightest.  There is so much revisionist history that you'd think pre-nge swg and daoc (two of my top 5 mmorpgs) were god's gift to the genre.  Both games had flaws and their share of complaints,  I remember being extremely frustrated with their development teams at times.  There were just far less outlets to make complaints and a much smaller group who even bothered.

Personally I don't feel that personal opinions should factor too heavily into rankings.  I absolutely loathed EQ, but it was a well made game and you simply can not deny the contributions it made to the genre.  I don't think it can be placed outside of the top 5.  Point is, you should be able to fairly rank a game despite your bias.  I played GW2 for about a month and didn't enjoy it all that much, but I can still see its merits, should definitely be a top 15 game at the very least.  I do agree with you about ESO, aside from Swtor I played it the longest of any "recent" mmo, should be in the top 10 or 15 as well.

I played WoW for 10 years and even I can admit that it does NOT deserve to be #1! Top 5 maybe but not #1, games like EQ and UO paved the way for WoW THEY deserve that spot. Both are OLD and still running which says ALOT about them. Please stop putting WoW on a pedestal it no longer deserves.

Glad to see both of the Final Fantasy games in the top ten. They've probably been the most influential in my relatively limited MMO experience. (the only other MMO I've played for more than a day being WoW)

So many people up in arms, it's pretty funny. WoW deserves the top spot. It was a bigger force than any other mmo ever created. When everyone and their brother attempts to emulate the success of WoW and failed at it for over a decade, well you know WoW did something right. WoW also shows that iteration can be an innovation all on it's own.

I was actually a little surprised to see GW2 as number 2. After reading the reasoning behind their decision, it makes more sense, sorta. I love GW2, it's the game I am playing the most currently, but while I believe it should be top 5, even top 3, I still don't feel like it should've beat EQ.

EQ being listed below anything but WoW, seems silly. Hell, I never even played it and I even understand the cultural significance that EQ had on the mmo world. With no EQ there's no WoW, and with no WoW there's potentially not as many mmos the last decade. According to many around here, EQ should then be the devil and not WoW, but whatever.
