Blizzard won't make another MMO. The development cycle is too long and the expense too great. They are making a lot of money with their other properties. No incentive for them to change up and go back to looking at MMOs...
You know what's super weird? When Overwwatch was still Titan a few years ago, I actually made an article for MMOsite speculating that it was going to be an FPS shooter annnnnd now... it is. I'm a bit creeped out by myself lol
I'd like something new, possibly even sci-fi of some kind, but let's not rehash what's already been done. Besides, if you go a new direction, you aren't limited by the past, so no need to hear people complaining about lore screwups or retconning.
After legion is the lowest selling WoW expansion of all time they will try and take a new MMO idea more seriously.
Can i borrow that Crystal ball? Just kidding but serious I mean i understand why this belief is out there. The game is dated an old but to think Legion will sell less then MoP when people were way more pissed off at panda's and all i have heard about legion is how people cant wait to make the new hero class(Demon Hunter? think thats its dont follow wow much now days) is crazy. I will bring a ton of WoW faithfuls back just to see the new class alone. Specially those who enjoy and are familiar with the lore of the game.
Ignore that guy. There is literally no way Legion could possibly be the lowest selling WoW expansion. Not with all the things they're changing(read: fixing), not to mention Demon Hunter hype. People have been wanting Demon Hunter ever since Blizz's first expansion, Burning Crusade.
Be leery of such additions as they are often smoke screens to hide the fact that you aren't getting a whole game. It's like whenever this site does an article which basically echoes exactly what we've been stating over and over again as if it was some insightful topic that they came up with all on their own. Just because you are getting a Demon Hunter doesn't necessarily mean that they are doing it because it made sense to, but rather because it was a necessary evil to draw players back to the game. If it's the latter, the end result will be less than what you expect. Case in point being the Garrisons... great smoke screen to hide the fact that you only got half a game... for more money.
I doubt we will see a new mmorpg from them anytime soon. My guess would be the next one will be released after the VR hardware meets an acceptable standard.
Totally agree with that, as it was my initial thought aswell. A VR mmo would seem like a pretty good way to ressurect interest and popularity of mmos again. Maybe it's wow 2.0 VR or any other from blizzard's franchises or a brand new IP (tend to believe towards that more) , I know that it would be a quality entertaining experience. Just don't let freaking Activision involve on timeline releasing or in the developement stage at all , cause they are corrupting Blizzard ever since they merged..

Yeh .. so why bother with MMORPGs? Just make something else that Blizz has not made before ... like a single player RPG, or a puzzle game.
But $15 (subscription) x 12m (subscribers) x 12 (months) = 2,160,000,000 (gross income (if subs maintained)). That's IF Blizzard can re-captivate its WoW fans with a "blown off the roof" game. On a serious note, our expectations of games nowadays are very, very, VERY high. Let me put my two cents in by saying WoW had an enormous impact on our demand(s) of games t'day.
PS. not limited to.
A few tiny details: - tax is deducted from many subs; - Blizzard get $0 subscription income from people who play in e.g. Malaysia; the companies that operate the game in those countries pay them a royalty.
And, imo, a big detail: if WoW had released today with a sub and the paucity of content they produce for said sub I do not believe it would have been a "monster" hit. I suspect Activision share this view.
So b2p+dlc (if they could deliver) + cash shop + optional sub. Oh wailey, wailey, wailey would this be an mmo?

Why are we talking about this? Has nothing to do with "what mmo" Blizz we would like to see.
"This may hurt a little, but it's something you'll get used to. Relax....."
Why are we talking about this? Has nothing to do with "what mmo" Blizz we would like to see.
But it does. Assume they decide to make another "mmo" but decide that the sub model is non-viable. The idea of a "traditional" "big world" that assumes lots of subscribers will pay for many months is out of the window. In its place you have e.g. Destiny - which detractors say is to small; ditto SW BF. How big will a new AB game mmo be - bearing in mind that e.g. Destiny's team is over twice the size of the new expanded WoW team. Will a game half the size of Destiny be considered n mmo? Would WoD released as a stand alone? Or will AB opt to invest a lot more money. Easy to say "spend tens of millions and it will all be OK"; much harder to get it right.
I think they tanked "Titan" because Activision doesn't see the benefits of a new mmo when they haven't even milked old cow dry yet. I think they might make new mmo at some point in the distant future.
I voted other because I don't see them making another MMO, they already canned one that was several years into development.
Here's the problem Blizz is facing. Everyone is looking to make the next WoW, the WoW Killer, expectations run riot and we've seen the results of that. If anyone is going to top WoW you'd expect it to be Blizzard.
But, the truth is, and Blizzard are totally aware of this, nothing will top WoW's success. They know it was a fluke, never to be repeated. I'm sure that if Blizzard thought they could turn out an MMO that would be as successful as WoW, they'd do it, but they know that's not going to happen and any MMO that they produce that doesn't reach that level of success will be seen as a failure. Seriously, why do you think they binned Titan?
Not gonna happen.
I also think that it is off to assume that blizz cares enough about mmorpgs to even go through that thinking (may be when they started titan, but not anymore).
I think it is more likely that they will just brain storm what they want to make, based on both gameplay ideas, fun factor, and the market, and mmorpgs just don't come up anymore.
Absolutely right. We don't agree on many things when it comes to MMO's but on this topic you've hit the nail on the head. Blizz are never going to invest the money MMO's require to develop when they know they can't top WoW, not when that money can be used to make half a dozen other games that suit today's market so much better.
You only need to look at the success of games like Hearthstone to see where they will be putting their money in the future.
Having said that I don't think they'll give up on WoW just yet. When a game is bringing in close to a billion dollars a year you don't just pull the plug. I expect we'll see more expacs for WoW in the future.
After Blizzard had to buy their (Blizzard/Activision) freedom from Vivendi, they were left broke. But still in possession of the largest monthly cash stream in the industry. They decided not to waste that money on Titan any further so they repurposed the work completed. Titan was clearly a new IP.
They took their work on a Single Player RPG of the Warcraft IP and repurposed it into WoW. The brought the modder working on a Mod of SC2 called SCUnivese to their house to discuss continued work. It is my hope that a serious WoSC would be developed, not just a mod of the RTS. But I don't see this happening, in the present environment.
Pardon any spelling errors
Konfess your cyns and some maybe forgiven Boy: Why can't I talk to Him? Mom: We don't talk to Priests. As if it could exist, without being payed for. F2P means you get what you paid for. Pay nothing, get nothing. Even telemarketers wouldn't think that. It costs money to play. Therefore P2W.

i think many people know that Blizzard only care(d) for RTS as a genre and other genres are just their playground. they do whatever seems best at the time. making an MMORPG was the best choice in 2004. right now other genres are better playgrounds. if MMORPG happens to be the best choice again in 2024 then why not. even if they can't top WoW as long as they can stay at the top it seems like a good choice to me. i mean why give up all your mmorpg players to some other company. at some point WoW will lose it's appeal to the mainstream and they have to choose to whether let go of their mmorpg addicts or not.

If they ever do return to MMOs it would likely be WoW2. Blizzard had said several times that they would like to make WoW more of an action MMO but can't because of the player base.
But that probably wouldn't be for awhile.
Well Titan was supposed to be an action MMO but I think they cancelled it because others beat them to the punch this time and the reactions haven't been amazing.
Company beat them in the moba market they went with it. Titan for them didn't seem to them a money maker. Like blizzard other game their having trouble keeping people around the long term. I know people would like them to make a new mmo but not sure what they can bring to the table that would make people jump in to a new mmo that blizzard would make and grind there time away for the long term.Y
You can develop a MOBA a lot quicker than an MMO, especially when you already have 3D engines in place to modify. And blizzard thought they saw an opening in the market for super casual. I think they missed the boat there.
I don't care what IP it would be based on as long as it had some decent character customization like WoW did up until WotLK. I absolutely can't stand the kid friendly consolization of all games now where all meaningful choices are removed. I don't care if all raiders of a specific class follow a specific talent spec, there is plenty more to mmorpgs than raiding. If balancing is hard I don't care. WoW used to make 8 bazillion dollars a month, that should be enough to put up with people whining. And I dislike the "overt formulaic" balance they have now. Everything you need to know now is just handed to you and overt and more copy paste than ever. I want complexity, and weird builds, and giving up the 31 point talent for the 21 in another tree. Or being a resto feral hybrid just for having the charge interrupt in the 2v2 arena.
I remember reading about the gem system when BC was coming out, and going to sites that had talent builders and spending hours building characters. Then WotLK added glyphs and more complexity. Then every expansion from then till now just removed everything I liked about the game. When Blizzard decides to make games for adults instead of all the kid games the have now I may care if they make a new mmorpg. Until then I will always probably be more excited about games like Asta or basically anything else.

Adults are the ones that ruined the game. Adults did the math, made the formulas, and required others to follow them. Your desire for crazy builds was pretty much a passing fancy of the minority. Soon the best is discovered and placed on the internet. The choice you had was an illusion you preferred to believe, but there never was real choice.

I would argue that Blizz look at ALL genre as their playground. I think they care about success of their games more or less equally. For example, if you look at new patch and content, Blizz has put as much effort into Diablo 3, Hearthstone, as SC2.
and they basically turn everything into gold, and they really don't need mmorpgs.
